Pumpkin Carving Night

Buster crawled in bed with us again about 15 minutes before it was time to get up, and both kids were good about getting ready. It was my turn to ferry the kids around after school today, so after I dropped them off I worked from home.

The kids had a good day, and I met Buster at school. He played on the playground for the half-hour before Bud got out. We met Bud and headed home. The kids had a snack, did their homework, and got ready for TKD, clearly having a lot of practice in the routine.

We headed over to TKD, where they were having a sparring day. Bud got his shoulder bumped into during the class, and had to come out. We iced his shoulder, and hopefully there's no damage, but we may need to schedule an appointment with the orthopedist again next week to make sure he didn't re-break his clavicle.

We headed home, had dinner, and the kids did piano while I gutted our pumpkin. The kids worked together to come up with a design, and the three of us cut it out together. It turned out pretty well, although it took us up past bedtime a little bit. I cleaned up as the kids got snack and got ready for bed. Bud's shoulder wasn't bothering him by bedtime, but we'll keep an eye on it.

Work Halloween Party

Buster came and crawled in bed with us at about 7:15, which really is just about the right time. We got up at 7:30, and the kids were good about getting ready for school. I took them, then headed off to work.

The kids had a good day at school, and Ama and Agu picked them up. Buster did what homework he could while waiting for Bud, but a good part of his homework tonight required coloring and cutting and pasting, and he only had a pencil with him. So he spent some time playing on the playground.

When Bud got out of school, Ama and Agu brought them straight to my office, where the Halloween party for kids was just getting going. Ama and Agu dropped the kids off and headed home, and I took the kids inside and had them change into their costumes, which I'd brought to the office with me. The kids had fun trick-or-treating around the office, and hitting the party in the lunchroom.

After a bit we returned to my desk, where we had a few minutes to spend. Bud finished up his homework before I had the kids change into their TKD uniforms, and we headed over there. The kids had a good TKD class, and I brought them home afterward. M-lady was already getting started on dinner when we got home.

We all ate together, Buster finished up his homework, and the kids did their piano practice. I read stories and had some iPad time with Buster before bed, and Bud started watching The Lord of the Rings trilogy with M-lady. I think he'll enjoy the movies.

Back to TKD

M-lady looked after the kids today, since Nanny J has started her vacation. I helped get the kids up and breakfasted, as usual, and M-lady took them to school. I rode my bike to work.

The kids had a good day. M-lady picked them up from school, managed to see them through their homework, and took them to TKD. Bud got to participate for the first time in 5 weeks or so, although he wasn't allowed contact. And of course, today they were doing full contact sparring, so Buster got all kitted out in the pads while Bud worked on some kicks on the side. Both kids had a good time, though.

I got home around 5:30, and M-lady got the kids home around 7:00. I had dinner mostly ready to go, and the kids joined M-lady and me after Buster had a shower and Bud had changed. We had a nice dinner, and M-lady got started on piano with the kids while I cleaned up. I helped get snack together, and M-lady snuggled with Buster before bed while I watched a little bit of a Top Gear episode with Bud.

All in all a good, if longish, day. Glad Bud is healing.

Child Fundraising

We did a standard morning routine, and M-lady took the kids to school. I headed in to work a short time later. The kids had a good day, and Buster enjoyed his first day this week as class VIP. He showed pictures from our trip to Norway over the summer for his sharing today.

Nanny J watched the kids in the afternoon, and they did most of their homework before I got home at about 5:30. We said goodbye to Nanny J, who's going to be off for the next couple of weeks, and I got started on dinner while M-lady helped Buster with homework and piano.

We had a good dinner, and afterward Bud wrapped up his homework, and started on piano. We had a nice video chat with Grandma W, and Bud gave the pitch he's been giving to all the family members over the weekend. He's been fundraising for his class science trip next year, and he's been delivering a very admirable pitch.

Buster was excited to show off his new juggling skills on the call, and had a nice chat with Grandma W as well. After the call we did snack, Bud finished up piano, and we got ready for bed. Buster and I had a little bit of iPad time before turning out the light.

Busy Weekend

We had a fairly full weekend, with lots of walking and visiting with friends:

On Friday, the kids didn't have school, so Nanny J arrived early and watched them for the day. M-lady got them for piano, and I made it home a little late with dinner. For movie night, the kids were excited to watch 'making of' specials from the Avengers DVD, and after a bit of that we watched a little bit more of the Life series.

At about bedtime, Babysitter G arrived, and M-lady and I headed out for a dance event. Buster was excited to show Babysitter G all his new stuff and interests, so I expect he got to sleep a little later than usual.

We got up at our usual weekday time on Saturday, all loaded up, and headed off to Stanford, where M-lady was attending a lecture with Aunt O that started at about 9:00. The kids and I spent some time wandering around campus, and then met up with some friends from out of town, visiting for Stanford's reunion weekend. Friend M and Friend L were friends with both M-lady and me during our Stanford days, and Friend M was the best man at our wedding. As we wandered around, he told the kids lots of embarrassing stories about our college days.

We circled around and picked up M-lady when she was done with her class, and split up as Friend M and Friend L headed off to the reunion and Homecoming football game. Our fam headed out to a treat lunch at Five Guys before heading home with tired feet after walking around campus all morning. We busied ourselves with chores around the house for the early afternoon, and I took a bit of a nap.

M-lady took the kids over to visit with Ama and Agu, recently returned from a trip, and Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C rendezvoused with them as well. I joined after I regained consciousness in the mid afternoon. After a nice visit and fun playing with Cousin C, we headed home for dinner.

On Sunday, I got up early for a bike race, which went well (if a little chilly). The kids seem to have had a good morning, and I arrived home mid-morning.

Buster had managed to draw two fun class activities for the week: the first was he go to take home Curious George over the weekend, and he needed to document what he did with George in a journal. The second was that he's the class 'VIP' this week, which means he gets to do show and tell each day, and has a poster put up in class about him. That meant that we needed to do the poster as well. Overall, he had a large amount of 'homework' over the weekend, which we spent a fair amount of time doing on Sunday. He did a great job with it all.

Along with the other household jobs, we kept busy until about 2:00, at which point M-lady and I both took naps. We got up around 3:00ish, and got ready to head out to a party held by my old manager. We had a good time at the party, and the kids were very patient. We headed home by about 6:00 and had a fairly standard evening before getting ready for bed.

Recovering Arm

Bud was up early this morning, and dressed and playing M:TG by himself when I went to check on him. Buster was a little slower to get up, but they both got ready in time and M-lady took them to school.

I met M-lady and Bud at 4:00 at Bud's orthopedic doctor for a collarbone checkup. His shoulder seems to have healed very well, and they took an X-ray which looked clear. He can start TKD again next week (no contact or pushups for another week after that). He needs to wait that extra week for soccer at school as well, but otherwise he's cleared to start being active again.

He headed home with M-lady, and I went back to work for a little while before picking up Buster at TKD. Bud apparently played outside with Friend E from across the street, and they were throwing a football around, so his shoulder isn't bothering him.

Buster and I had a nice chat on the way home, and we all ate dinner together shortly after arriving. The kids did piano, but don't have school tomorrow, so had the night off from homework. After a snack, I watched a little more of the Top Gear special with Bud, which we really enjoyed.

Slightly Sparse Posting

Apologies for missing a few days: I'll probably be very busy with work over the next couple of weeks.

The kids have had a good couple of days. The big excitement yesterday was rain at lunchtime, which I believe mostly kept them off the playground. It was dry again by mid-afternoon, however. The kids were happily playing outside when I arrived home, and we had a good evening.

Today, Buster crawled into bed with M-lady and I a little bit early, and got up when we did. The morning routine was easy, and I took the kids to school before heading to work. I picked the kids up again at TKD, where a couple of the instructors asked when Bud will be able to get back into class.

We had a usual Tuesday evening, which was a little rushed since we got home a bit after 7:00. The kids were good about homework and piano and dinner and getting ready for bed, though, and I had fun watching a little bit of a Top Gear episode with Bud before we turned out the lights.

Weekend Wrap

Thursday was fairly standard, with M-lady taking the kids to school and volunteering in their classes. I headed to work, and picked the kids up from TKD in the afternoon. Our evening was a little rushed, but the kids got to bed in time.

On Friday, M-lady took the kids to school again, and I biked into work a little later. The kids had their piano lesson, and I arrived home a short time before they did, just long enough to take a quick shower and get dinner started. M-lady hung out with us for a little while as we watched some Looney Tunes, and then headed out to a happy hour for a work colleague. The kids and I had a good evening, and I let the kids stay up a little bit late before tucking them in.

On Saturday, M-lady got up with the kids and got them some breakfast, and I slept in a little bit. We had a fairly mellow day, with M-lady starting work on Buster's Halloween costume and then taking Bud to a birthday party in the early afternoon. I hung out with Buster, and we played games and worked on Lego together. After Bud and M-lady got home, we all loaded up and headed up to the Stanford Mall to run an errand. We picked up some dinner and a treat on the way home, and then had a little bit of time at home before it was time to get ready for bed.

Today, I got up help get Buster some breakfast, and then worked with him to get the old little desk out of his room and into the office to set up a computer for the kids. I set up a machine for them to log in to, and then spent some time trying to get the network set up for that machine. Buster was excited to give it a try, and spent some time with the Raz-Kids reading app he's got for school.

M-lady did piano with the kids, and I headed out for a bike ride. While I was out, they went to visit Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C, and apparently had a good time playing together. I got dinner started before they returned, and we all ate together a short time later. After dinner, the kids did Xbox and iPad for a bit, and we did a fairly standard bedtime routine. I played M:TG with Bud before bed, and we had a good time chatting about decks.

Scraped

I was a few minutes late getting out of bed, and the kids were a little slow getting ready this morning. We weren't rushing, but we didn't have much free time before we had to put our shoes on and head out the door to get to school. It was a little cooler today, which was nice, but Buster didn't want to take a jacket.

The kids seem to have had a good day at school. Buster came home with a couple of band-aids on his knee, which he scraped while playing at lunchtime. I picked the kids up at TKD, and Buster showed me his knee as soon as he got out of class. We made good time on the way home, and arrived at about 6:30.

M-lady got dinner together, and we all ate, Buster joining us after he'd showered. He took his band-aids off by himself after the shower, and his knee was still pretty dirty. Before bed I helped him wash his knee and got it dressed in a clean band-aid.

The kids did homework and piano after dinner, and Buster was excited to open up a package which came for him. We'd ordered a Skylanders pack on Amazon using his allowance a few days ago, and he got a little time to play with the new figures before snack and bed time. I read a little with him before bed, and we turned out the light a little bit after 8:30.

Cataloging

Buster wandered into our room at about 5:00am, and I sent him back to bed, telling him he had to wait until at least 7:00. M-lady went to wake him up a bit after 7:30, and I rolled Bud out of bed around the same time. The kids were good about getting up, and we did the usual morning routine with the addition of picking up a bit before the cleaners arrived. I dropped the kids off at school and headed off to work.

The kids had a good day, and I met them at TKD a little after 5:00pm. Bud is still sitting out classes as his shoulder heals, but hopefully he'll be OK to get back to it in a week or two. Bud and I worked on his homework while Buster took class, and we headed home around 6:30.

M-lady helped get dinner together when we got home, and we all ate well. After dinner the kids did piano, and I helped Buster put together his new comfy chair after he'd done his practice. M-lady read a story with him after he'd had a snack, and I hung out with Bud for a bit before bedtime. We spent the time working on cataloging our MTG cards, which is probably going to be a multi-week process.

Tracking Cards

Buster was up early this morning, and I rolled Bud out of bed after I got up at about 7:30. The kids were good about getting ready for school, and M-lady took them. Unfortunately, Bud forgot his sling (he's still wearing it at school this week), so M-lady came home to get it for him.

The kids had a good, full day at school today. M-lady and I arrived home around the same time at 5:45, and Bud asked why we were home early: we weren't early, but he got home later than last week, so it seemed that way.

Both kids had done most of their homework, and I turned on MNF a little bit after Nanny J left. We had dinner together, and then the kids did a good job with their piano practice before snack time. Buster got a little bit of Xbox time in, and both kids were pretty good about getting ready for bed.

The kids are getting interested in Magic: The Gathering again, and opted to spend a little of their allowance on booster packs. Bud and I found a good site for keeping track of a card collection, so we spent some time entering cards before going to bed.

Weekend Wrap

I got the kids ready for school on Friday morning, and M-lady took them to school. They had a good day, their last short day of the parent-teacher conference season. M-lady picked them up for piano lesson, and I met them at home for dinner after piano.

Bud played outside for a little bit while Buster and I watched a little bit of the Stanford football game, and then came in for dinner while we all watched the remainder of the series Hack My Brain, which we all found very interesting. After dinner, we had a snack and did a standard, if slightly later, bedtime routine.

M-lady got up with the kids on Saturday morning, while I slept in a little bit. M-lady skipped ballet, but headed out for a walk before lunch. I got the kids an early lunch, and then we headed over to the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds for a local car show. The kids were tolerant while we checked out the cars for a bit, and then enjoyed a shaved ice. After that, they were more interested in seeing some of the cars: of interest were a beautifully restored DeLorean and the Green Hornet's Black Beauty. We didn't find any good painters or engine builders, though.

We got home at about 2:00, and had a little time to relax before getting ready and heading out for back-to-back evening events: first we went to the beginning part of a baby shower for M-lady's boss, and then headed over to Bud's Friend N's house, whose parents had invited us over for a BBQ dinner. The kids had a great time playing together all evening, and Friend N's parents and M-lady and I had the opportunity to chat over dinner, which was very nice. We headed home around 8:30, and got the kids to bed a little bit late again.

Today M-lady got up with the kids again, and I got them breakfast shortly after 9:00. After getting them fed, I kitted up and headed off for a bike ride, and headed out around 10:00. M-lady did piano practice with the kids, and they headed over to Ama and Agu's for lunch. After lunch, they did some shopping on the way home, including getting groceries. I got back a few minutes before they arrived home.

After I'd cleaned up and had something to eat, I played some Xbox with Buster, and then set up a driving game. Buster and Bud each took a few turns driving a car with a force-feedback wheel and pedals, and had a lot of fun.

At about 4:30, Ama, Agu, Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C all arrived. The kids had a good time playing together while we cooked dinner and chatted. We had a nice dinner together, and then cake for dessert a little bit later. Our guests took their leave around 7:30, and the kids and I watched a few minutes of the Sunday Night Football game before starting the bedtime routine. I helped get Buster ready for bed, and then watched a few videos with Bud before we turned out the light around 9:00.

Increased Milk Consumption

Both kids were up early this morning, and Buster was in bed with us for a while at about 7:00. When I got up at 7:30, Bud was already dressed and playing M:TG in his room. I prodded Buster to get dressed, and we did a pretty standard morning routine. M-lady took the kids to school, and I headed off to work a short time later.

The kids had another short day at school, and I picked them up at TKD. Bud and I finished working on his homework there, and then Bud had a little bit of iPad time before Buster was out of class. We had a good drive home, arriving a little after 7:00.

M-lady was home making dinner, and we all ate together after Buster got out of the shower. After dinner, the kids got started on piano and I ran out to the grocery store, as we'd run out of milk. I got back in time to read a story with Buster and have a little bit of iPad time before bed.

An Early Morning Viewing

I rolled the kids out of bed at about 4:00am this morning to take a look at the eclipse. They both popped out of bed, and since we weren't able to see it clearly from Buster's bedroom window, we put jackets on and headed out to the driveway. The kids were pretty excited to see the red moon, and we looked at it for about a minute before heading back inside and back to bed.

The kids were slightly tougher to rouse this morning for school, but not terribly so. We were able to do our morning routine and head out to school on time, and I dropped the kids off before heading off to work. The kids seem to have had another good day, again short at school for parent-teacher conferences.

I met them at TKD again, and Bud and I went over his homework while Buster was taking the class. We had a nice chat on the way home, and arrived at about 6:40. Buster took a shower, and we all had some dinner together. After eating, Buster wrapped up his homework and the kids did their piano practice.

I watched the rest of the Mickey Mouse Three Musketeers with Bud, and then we watched a little bit of an M:TG championship match. Bud is getting interested in M:TG again, so we'll probably be spending some time playing that again soon.

Eclipse Interest

Buster got into our bed early again this morning, and was good about getting up and getting dressed when the time came. I got breakfast for the kids, combed their hair, and took them to school before heading off to work.

The kids had a short day again, and did some of their homework in the afternoon. Buster didn't really get all of his homework done, but Bud got started on his homework for tomorrow. I picked them up at TKD, and hung out with Bud while Buster took the class. We had a nice chat on the drive home.

We talked a little about the upcoming lunar eclipse tonight, and Bud mentioned that his friend Nick was going to get up early in the morning (4:00am) to look at it. Both kids showed interest, so I told them if they got to bed early we could get up to see the eclipse.

When we got home, Buster took a shower, we had dinner, and then homework, piano, and getting ready for bed quickly. Buster was good about getting into bed and ready to sleep, and we turned the lights out about 10 minutes before the usual time. Buster fell asleep pretty quickly, too, but we'll see if he and Bud are rousable at 4:00.

Finishing the Job

Buster crawled into bed with us around 7:00 this morning, and since he was fairly awake didn't take much convincing to get up and get going when it came time. I helped get the kids some breakfast, and M-lady took them to school. I headed off to work a short time later on my bike.

The kids seemed to have had a good day at school. It was a short day again, and Buster complained of not being able to play soccer at lunch because the lunch period has been shortened by 15 minutes. I got home around 5:40, and found M-lady already home helping the kids with their homework. After I rinsed off, I got started on cooking dinner.

Buster managed to get his piano done before dinner, while Bud played outside for a little while. We had a good meal together, and afterward Bud did his piano while I finished up building Buster's new desk with him. We wrapped up just before snack time, and he seemed pretty pleased with the new work space.

We did a standard snack and bedtime, and I watched a video with Bud. He just finished reading The Three Musketeers, so we started watching the Disney Mickey Mouse Three Musketeers cartoon. He was really enjoying it, and we got about half way through before turning the lights out around 9:00.

Busy Social Weekend

Friday turned out to be a fairly standard day. The kids were good about getting up and getting ready, and M-lady took them to school. They got out early again due to parent-teacher conferences, and M-lady met them at piano practice in the late afternoon. I got home before they did and started on preparing dinner, and we had our usual Friday Night Movie together. We watched some Mythbusters, followed by the last episode of Cosmos. It was nice to finish up the series.

During the day, we noticed that our neighbors across the street had a large amount of mulch on the street in front of their house. Apparently they were spreading the mulch in the back yard, and Bud and Buster headed over to help out with just about all their free time during the weekend.

On Saturday, M-lady got the kids breakfast while I slept in a little. At about 9:45, M-lady and the kids headed for the library, and a short time later I headed out to get groceries. When I got back the kids were helping with the mulch again, and I called them in a short time later for lunch.

Around noon, Babysitter G arrived, and Ama and Agu as well. We were heading out to see the musical Pippen up in the city. Aunt O was supposed to come as well, but wasn't feeling up for it, so Bud came in her place. Buster was happily playing with Babysitter G when we left.

We had a good time at the show, and Bud seemed to enjoy it as well. While we were out, Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C came over to play with Buster, and we met them there when we arrived home. We all had some dinner together before our guests left. The kids played outside a bit after dinner, helped with the mulch, and we did snack and bedtime a little bit later.

Today, the kids were again up fairly early, and we hit the road shortly after 9:00 to get to IKEA before they opened at 10:00. We got a good parking space, had some breakfast there (a second breakfast for the kids), and then picked up a desk for Buster shortly after the store opened. We were able to get home shortly after 11:00.

Bud immediately headed out to help out with the mulch some more, and Buster and I worked on building the desk in his room. We only got about half way through before lunch, and then I had to spend time making donuts for our next event. Buster helped with the donuts a bit, which was nice. We all got ready to go, and left the house around 4:00.

We met with dance friends for a party, and had a good early evening together. The kids ate pretty well, and everyone seemed to like the donuts. We headed home around 7:00, and the kids did snack and bedtime after a quick piano practice. Unfortunately, we didn't get to finish Buster's desk, but we should be able to get to it tomorrow.

Prognosis

The kids were pretty good about getting up when I rolled them out of bed a little after 7:30, and we did a standard morning routine. M-lady took them to school, and I headed off to work soon after.

The kids got out early today, around 1:00, and will continue to get out early for the next few days so that the teachers have time for parent-teacher conferences. The teachers were nice enough to schedule Bud's and Buster's conferences back-to-back today.

M-lady headed home and picked up Bud, and I met them at the school at about 2:30. For the first time, Bud was invited to be part of the parent teacher conference, and his input was added to the mix. All in all he's doing fine, functioning in class at a high level, and needs to work on his handwriting.

Nanny J met us with Buster when we got out of Bud's conference, and headed home with both kids. We did Buster's conference, and mostly heard an echo: Buster's doing great, but could stand to slow down a little when writing to help legibility. So we can focus on handwriting for the next couple months.

After heading home, we picked up Bud and headed to an orthopedic doctor to have his broken clavicle examined. The doctor confirmed the break, and also diagnosed a grade 1 AC separation, which will take a while to heal as well, although there's no other treatment besides keeping it protected from further impacts. So a few more weeks in the sling for Bud.

We headed home, and given the kids had already done their homework, we had a fairly easy evening. We had an earlier dinner than usual, and the kids did piano after dinner. Buster had a little bit of Xbox time, and opted to skip snack in order to have a little more. The bedtime routine was fairly normal, and I spent some time working with Buster to prepare his oral presentation tomorrow before turning the lights out.

Another Ballgame

We had a pleasant morning together this morning. Buster was a little slow getting out of bed, but moved well once he got up. We had read Richard Scarry the night before, and having rediscovered the books he carried one around all morning, reading it when he could. I took the kids to school, where the drop off went uneventfully.

The kids had a good day at school, and I met them at TKD. Bud had apparently picked up a book from our bookshelf, and was reading David Copperfield while waiting for Buster. He was about 100 pages in: I chatted with him about it, and he seemed like he was enjoying it a little. I think it might be time to start him on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle before he takes on Dickens, though.

Traffic was a bit ugly on the way home, so we didn't arrive until about 6:45. M-lady helped get dinner ready for the kids, and I helped the kids with homework afterward while M-lady did piano with them. Buster was assigned to watch some of the Giants baseball game tonight, which I was able to find on TV, so Buster and I watched the last inning together before having a snack and heading up to bed.

Ballgame Homework

The kids were a little slower to get up this morning, but the general routine went fine, and I took the kids to school. Buster got to go into class early to help out his teacher along with a couple other early arrivers, so I was able to head out about 10 minutes before the bell rings.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I came home around lunchtime to be home when we had a plumber arrive, and was home when the kids got home. They said hello to me, had a snack, and took care of their homework before coming up to the office to bug me a little bit. They didn't have much time before Buster headed off to TKD, though, and Bud and I headed out to pick him up about half an hour later.

Bud and I watched Buster for the second half of his TKD class, and then headed home. M-lady met us there, and we had a good dinner before the kids got going on finishing up their homework and piano. Buster had part of his homework assignment to look for the A's game, but we didn't seem to get it unfortunately. I watched some of the ESPN gamecast with him, though.

I read a little with Buster while M-lady was wrapping up piano with Bud, and then watched some videos with Bud before we turned the light out around 9:00.
