Keeping Ahead

Buster was in our bed shortly after 6:00 this morning, coughing and snorking. He didn't seem very put out by his cold, and was up and out of our bed before too long, playing in his room and checking to see if Bud was awake yet. The kids were both up and playing by the time M-lady and I rolled out of bed, and so it didn't take much to get them through the morning routine. They were ready to go a good 15 minutes before M-lady took them to school.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster brought home a sheaf of wheat he's been growing in a straw at school, and stuck it in a test tube. Bud spent some time working on his report, which is pretty much complete at this point. I got home early, around 5:00, and M-lady was already home when I arrived. Buster had finished his homework, and they got done with piano before dinner time as well.

I picked up copies of Bud's shoulder X-rays on the way home, and we all looked at those with interest. The kids thought they were pretty cool.

We had a good dinner, and Buster took his shower afterward, completing his evening routine. Bud did his piano and played outside for a while before snack time. I made Rice Krispy treats for snack time, which the kids enjoyed, and we did a pretty standard bedtime routine after that.

Canary Weekend

The kids didn't have school on Friday, so we were able to sleep in a little bit. M-lady got up and got the kids some breakfast, and then took them over to Ama and Agu's for the morning. I loaded up and headed off to a VIP bike ride for the Canary Challenge.

The kids had a good day, hanging out with Ama and Agu until about lunch time, and then with Nanny J. M-lady picked them up for piano, and I met them as they got home with dinner. We were able to have a nice dinner together while watching some Mythbusters, and then started on watching the Life series. We all enjoyed the shows, and then did a quick snack and bedtime.

I was up and out the door by about 6:00am the next morning to ride in the Canary Challenge. M-lady was kind enough to watch the kids, who were pretty good for her during the morning. They made French toast for breakfast, did their piano practice, Trevor worked on his report on the California deserts, they went through their closets to see what winter clothes fit, and they had lunch before coming over to see me finish my ride at about 3:00pm.

I hung out with M-lady and the kids at the Canary Village for a little while, and the kids told me all about the candy they'd picked up. Buster had gotten a balloon sword which he was pretty happy with, and he wasn't even disappointed when it popped a little while later. They enjoyed the band playing 80's music (they've been listening to my 80's collection recently), and were good while M-lady and I were chatting with other riders and acquaintances.

We headed home around 4:00 or so, and the kids opted to ride with me. I unloaded my stuff when we got home, took a shower, and napped for half an hour while the kids played outside. Ama and Agu arrived at about 6:00, and M-lady and I headed out to the Canary after party. The kids had a fun evening with the grandparents, and were good for them from all accounts.

This morning, M-lady and the kids let me sleep in, which was really nice (I was pretty tired). I rolled out of bed a little after 9:00, and found Buster sulking a little bit after a breakfast misunderstanding. He pulled himself together after a little while, although appeared to possibly be a little tired... maybe he didn't sleep well the previous night. After getting myself some breakfast, I found Bud working on his report again. I helped him out with proofing the report, and Buster did a good piano practice with M-lady.

At about 11:30 we loaded up and headed over to Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C's place, where we met them and Ama and Agu. The kids played together for a little while, although there was a tussle between Bud and Buster right before lunch, and Buster got sulky again. We stayed through lunch, but when Buster didn't pull it together, we headed home a little early.

We had a pretty mellow afternoon, and Bud worked on his report a little more. In the later afternoon, Buster came with me to do the grocery shopping, while Bud went shopping with M-lady. Buster and I played a little bit of Xbox together when we got home. After M-lady and Bud got home, I ran out to pick up some dinner, and we all had a nice meal together. After dinner we watched a little bit of TV, and then did the usual snack and bedtime routine. Bud spent a little more time on his report before bed, and almost has the whole thing wrapped up. Finishing tomorrow before the Tuesday due date shouldn't be a problem.

Classroom Competence

Buster crawled into bed with us this morning, probably around 6:00am. He was good about getting up when we did, around 7:30, and the morning routine was easy. M-lady took the kids to school after I got them breakfast.

M-lady volunteered in the kids' classrooms again today, and was able to observe them in class, where they both seem to be doing very well. In Bud's class, where they were talking about the difference between Fahrenheit and Celsius, Bud volunteered the formula for conversion between the two. Buster also showed good class skills, raising his hand to answer questions and responding in a clear voice.

I picked the kids up from TKD, where Buster was taking the class and Bud was working on his homework. He has a report on California deserts due on Tuesday, and he was finishing up the rough draft when I arrived, leaving much less work to do over the weekend. I brought my laptop in and he spent some time typing up some of the draft while Buster was in class.

When class was done, we headed home and got started on dinner with M-lady. The kids don't have school tomorrow, so there was no homework, and after dinner Bud went to play outside for a little while as Buster did his piano with M-lady. After his piano was done, he played on the Xbox while Bud came in and did his piano practice.

Snack and bed time followed, about half an hour later than usual for a school night.

Sitting Out

The kids were pretty good about getting ready for school this morning, and I took them to class after breakfast and hair combing. They seem to have had a good day, and Bud is reportedly being good about not playing at recess with his mending collarbone. I caught up with the kids at their TKD class, where Bud was sitting out while Buster took the class.

Bud had a bunch more people ask him about what happened, and he hasn't started making up stories yet. After Buster was done with class, we headed home and got started on the evening routine. M-lady was out, so I got dinner for the kids, helped with piano, and verified homework. Bud is working on factoring, and I talked with him a little bit about prime factors. We wrapped up snack a short time after 8:00, and I got the kids ready for bed.

Buster snuck into M-lady's and my bed while I was putting Bud to bed, but I caught him at it and sent him back to his own.

Lots of Questions

The kids were good about getting up in the morning, and I had them ready to go about ten minutes before M-lady took them to school. They apparently had a good day.

I rode my bike to work, and got home at 5:30. M-lady was already home, chatting with Nanny J about the day. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and I got started on cooking dinner while M-lady helped the kids with homework. Dinner was a bigger production for me than usual, but it turned out well. We ate around 7:00, and had a nice chat at dinner. When I asked Bud how his day went, he responded that he had gotten a lot of questions about the sling.

M-lady did piano with the kids while I washed dishes. Buster wanted to play Xbox after piano, but it was already past snack time. He was disappointed, but I helped him take a shower and he had fun with an iPad before bed. After Bud took his shower, he and I watched some Mythbusters before turning out the light.

Week Wrap Up

Apologies for not writing this week... catching up now!

Wednesday was pretty standard. The kids opted to skip TKD for one more day, since Bud was recovering from his brief stint of sniffles, and Buster thought he might be getting them. I got home in time to relieve Nanny J, and M-lady arrived home a short time later. After getting the kids going on dinner, I headed out to have dinner with some old work friends.

While I was out, Bud apparently fell onto his shoulder while playing soccer in the front yard. It was pretty sore for him, but he didn't seem too put out. M-lady got the kids to bed without too much trouble. On Thursday morning, I took a look at Bud's shoulder and found it a bit swollen, so applied an ice pack before he headed off to school, with instructions for him to take it easy on the shoulder at recess and lunch. He apparently played goalie during their usual lunch soccer game :).

We applied ice in the evening again, and I gave him some ibuprofen to help with the swelling. On Friday morning it was still a bit swollen, so after getting the kids to school M-lady scheduled a doctor's appointment for Bud in the early afternoon. She picked Bud up from school about an hour before he usually gets out, and I met them at the doctor's office.

Bud was good about letting the doctor check his shoulder, which was still pretty tender. The doctor provided a sling for Bud, and ordered an x-ray, which I took Bud to while M-lady headed home. I managed to get Bud home in time for M-lady to take the kids to their piano lesson, during which time the doctor called to let us know that Bud had a border fracture of his clavicle. Fortunately, the treatment is pretty easy: keep the arm in the sling as far as possible, ice, elevation at night, and ibuprofen to control the swelling for a couple of days.

Since Bud wasn't going to TKD, we got to have movie night, and watched a couple of episodes of Cosmos before doing the bedtime routine, with added shoulder ice and ibuprofen.

I went for a bike ride on Saturday morning, but Bud was up and reading in bed before I left at about 7:30. They had a pretty mellow morning, getting piano practice done and gettings some screen time. I got home after lunch, and hung out with the kids a bit. M-lady took Buster to a birthday party at about 4:30, and Bud and I hung out together, and worked on playing some music together as well. We got dinner, as M-lady and Buster had pizza at the party. When they got back, we had time to play and watch a little bit of TV before snack and bed time.

Today, M-lady got breakfast for the kids while I slept in a little bit. We had a quick video chat with Grandma W, and the kids had some screen time before Ama and Agu arrived for lunch. We had a very nice lunch together, and the kids had fun playing with Agu. After Ama and Agu left, I took care of groceries. The kids opted to stay home with M-lady while I was out.

M-lady headed out to run some errands after I got back, and I managed to get Buster to help me get the recycling out. We had accumulated a fair number of cardboard boxes in the office, and he helped me take them out, break them down, and get them into the bin. We had a pretty good time together.

M-lady brought dinner with her when she came home, and we had a nice meal together. The kids played a little bit before snack time, and I worked with Buster on his latest Pleygo kit. After snack, I read stories with Buster before we turned the light out around 8:30.

Bud is getting the hang of relaxing his arm in the sling, so hopefully will be able to keep it fairly protected at school tomorrow.

Scrabble Day

The kids were pretty good about getting up, although Bud still complained of a sore throat and stuffy nose. I took them to school, and headed to work after seeing them into their classrooms.

The kids seem to have had a good day, as usual. Given that Bud's a little under the weather, they opted to not go to TKD today, but they were good about getting their homework done early again. I got home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids had just had a snack, so I played with Buster a bit while Bud headed outside before dinner.

Buster and I played a bit of Scrabble together at his suggestion. He did pretty well, although his spelling is still developing. We had a good time before getting started on dinner a little later. M-lady arrived home, and we all ate.

The kids did a good job with piano practice, and the kids still had time to play for a short while before snack time. After that it was a pretty straightforward snack and bedtime, and I read stories and played on the iPad with Buster before we turned the lights out at 8:30.

Buster apparently crawled into our bed later in the evening, as we found him there when M-lady and I headed for bed. I returned him to his bed once again.

Playing It Safe

The kids were a little slow getting up this morning, and Bud complained of a sore throat and congestion. He didn't have a fever, though, and was good about getting ready for school. M-lady took the kids, and I worked from home for the day on the off chance that Bud needed to come home at some point.

He didn't though, and seems to have had a good day at school. Nanny J picked up the kids, and they did their homework when they got home. The kids came and bugged me a couple of times, but it wasn't too bad. We said goodbye to Nanny J at about 5:45, and we turned on the football game a short time later.

I got dinner going around the time M-lady arrived home, and we all had dinner together a short time later. M-lady did piano with the boys, and Buster had just a bit of time to play Xbox before snack and bed time. I helped Buster shower, and then watched some Mythbusters with Bud before we turned the light out at 9:00. No staying up late tonight for someone complaining of being sick.

Early Runner

Bud decided that he wanted to do the run workout with the Black Belt test candidates this morning, so I rolled him out of bed around 6:15, we had a quick breakfast, and drove over to the track where the TKD school was meeting. He was pretty excited, so it wasn't hard to get him out of bed, and we arrived a couple minutes before 7:00.

There were about 20 kids there along with the instructors, and the running goal for the day was to run continuously for an hour. I walked a warm up lap with the kids, and took off running with them around the same time. I haven't done any serious running since college, so I had no idea how my legs would hold up.

Bud did really well, running with the fasted kids for the whole hour. He covered more than six miles (25 or 26 laps). I managed to keep a faster pace than anyone else, and lapped everybody a few times, finishing 28 laps (7 miles) in just under the 60 minute workout time. Incidentally, for the black belt test, the kids will have to run 7 miles in a 2 hour time limit... shouldn't be a problem for Bud at all.

We finished up and headed home around 8:30, and after taking a shower I crashed into bed, where I slept the rest of the morning. Bud also showered, but didn't go back to bed: he read a book, had some breakfast with M-lady and Buster, and then headed to the library with them at about 11:30. I pulled myself out of bed around then and got some lunch. My legs were very sore for the rest of the day.

I got lunch for the kids when they got back around 12:30, and M-lady did piano with them before I played a little bit of Xbox with Buster. We hung out a bit in the afternoon, and Uncle C and Cousin C arrived at about 3:00. I made a quick foray to Fry's, and then played some Xbox with Uncle C while the kids played outside. Uncle C and Cousin C headed out a little after 5:00, and I picked up some dinner at about 6:00.

We did our movie night tonight, and all watched Mythbusters together until snack and bed time. The kids were good about getting ready for bed, and I read with Buster a little bit before we turned the lights out.

Late TKD

The kids were good about getting ready for school, and I dropped them off without issue.

We did the same routine that we did last Friday: M-lady arrived home to take Bud to piano, and then Nanny J brought Buster over to piano a half-hour later. While M-lady stayed with Buster for his piano practice, Nanny J brought Bud towards TKD, and I met them about half-way there. Bud and I then proceeded to find a place to eat a quick dinner, then headed to his black belt prep class at TKD.

The class ran from 6:30 to 8:30, and Bud did very well in the class. He and I headed home after class, arriving close to 9:00. While we were out, M-lady and Buster picked up some dinner on the way home from piano and watched Mythbusters together for the evening. Buster had just gone to bed but was still awake, and greeted Bud and me as we came in the door.

Bud got ready for bed quickly, since he wanted to get up early, and headed for bed. Buster was a bit wired, but eventually fell asleep as well.

Book Fair Excitement

The kids were good about getting up this morning, and Buster rolled out of bed after a few minutes of snuggling with M-lady. I got breakfast for the kids and combed their hair, and M-lady took them to school.

They had a good day, and didn't go to TKD in the afternoon, although they were good about getting their homework done. I got home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J a few minutes later.

I got the kids started on their piano practice, and they did a good job. M-lady arrived home as Bud was starting his practice. Once that was finished, the kids got their shoes on and we headed over to their school for the talent show and book fair.

The talent show was definitely secondary. They had food trucks there for dinner, but nothing seemed particularly appetizing, so we headed straight for the book fair. Buster had been anxiously awaiting his opportunity to get a book for about a week, and found what he was looking for pretty quickly. Bud made a quick decision and headed out to play with some friends on the playground.

After getting the books, we visited with some other families before heading home again for dinner. The kids ate well, and after dinner I played on the Xbox for a few minutes with Buster while Bud wrapped up his homework. After that we did a standard snack and bedtime routine. Bud had finished his new book before going to bed.

Last Wednesday Night Race

I helped Buster set his alarm last night, so he got up when it went off around 7:35 and came in to snuggle with M-lady. He was good about getting dressed, and I roused Bud and got breakfast for the kids. I took them to school, and the drop off went smoothly.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster got homework for the first time this year, apparently, and Bud sat him down to do it in the afternoon before their TKD class. M-lady was kind enough to pick the kids up from TKD again, and watch them for the evening.

They had dinner, piano, some play time, and were good about getting ready for bed. I got home around 9:30, after the kids were asleep. When I headed into our room to take a shower, I discovered Buster asleep in our bed. Apparently he got up and crawled into our bed while M-lady was putting Bud to bed, and waited for her to come in, but fell asleep there. I carried him back to his bed and tucked him in.

Tonight was the last Wednesday Night Race of the season, so I'll be around for Wednesdays going forward. I'd also like to point out that I'm fundraising for the Canary Foundation... if you have a moment, please check it out. Thanks!

Making Choices

The kids were pretty good about getting up this morning when I rolled them out of bed, and I got them breakfast and took them to school. They seem to have had a good day. Bud did his homework in the afternoon, Buster still hasn't been assigned any homework, and I met them and Nanny J at TKD.

On the way home we had a chance to chat about their days a little bit, which was nice. M-lady had dinner just about ready to go when we got home, but the kids opted to play outside for a few minutes with the neighbors before having dinner. M-lady and I were able to enjoy a quiet meal together before they came in to eat.

After dinner, they did piano, and then headed outside again for a few minutes before snack time. They came in around 8:15, a bit late, and we rushed them through snack and getting ready for bed. I had a few minutes hanging out with Buster before we turned out the light.

Buster was awake for a little while, and snuck out of bed to snuggle with M-lady for a little while before going to sleep.

Early Prep

The morning routine was straightforward, and M-lady took the kids to school after I got them breakfast and combed their hair. They apparently had a good day, although Buster opted to not play basketball at PE today, saying that he needed to practice running for his TKD black belt test. He's probably got a couple of years before his test, though, so he may be prepping a little early. We need to make sure that he's not actually worrying about the test right now.

I got home from work at about 5:45 on my bike, and we said goodbye to Nanny J as M-lady arrived home. I immediately got started on dinner, hungry after my ride, and the kids and M-lady joined me shortly. We had a good dinner, and did piano afterward. Bud headed outside to play with the neighbors, and I played a little bit of Xbox with Buster before snack time. Snack and bedtime were usual, and I watched a little bit of Mythbusters with Bud before we turned out the light.

Muffins

The kids were up fairly early, and checking in on us pretty regularly until we got up around 9:00. M-lady and I made breakfast for the kids, and then we lounged until piano practice at about 11:00.

After piano, the kids played some Skylanders together and I headed out for a bike ride. While I was out, the kids had some lunch with M-lady, and then worked on baking muffins. I got back as the muffins were coming out of the oven, and everyone had one.

After I got cleaned up, I took the kids with me to run a couple of errands. Bud dropped off some muffins at a friend's house, and then we headed out to get the boys' hair cut. The kids were good about getting haircuts, and looked spiffy afterward. We made a quick jaunt into REI to pick up a bike part for me, and then headed home again.

The kids spent some time playing on iPads, and I played some Xbox with them after that. M-lady and I started on dinner around 5:30, and we all ate dinner together a little after 6:00. The kids ate well, and after dinner was cleaned up we sat down for our delayed movie night, watching a TV special on the making of Frozen.

That took us to snack time, and I helped Buster get ready for bed. He spent a little time on the iPad before we turned out the lights around 8:30. He fell asleep a little after 9:00.

More Backflips and Skylander

The kids were up before we were today, and were anxious to get us up and going. Bud got some breakfast for himself, but Buster waited until we got some breakfast for him. M-lady was up around 9:00, and I got up a little bit later.

We got going fairly quickly, and all walked over to the park around 10:00. There we met Buster's classmate Friend W, and they played together for a while. Bud and I kicked a soccer ball around, and talked about backflips and worked on his form a little bit.

We headed home near 11:30, and I got lunch together for Bud and myself shortly after we arrived. Buster balked for a little bit, and we started watching the Stanford - USC football game. After Buster had eaten lunch and did his piano practice with M-lady, the game was at halftime, and Buster and I spent a while playing some Skylanders together.

We had a pleasant afternoon together, aside from Stanford losing the football game. M-lady and I started making dinner around 5:30, and we ate shortly after 6:00. Ama and Agu arrived around that time as well, and Aunt O arrived a few minutes later.

The kids played outside for a bit after dinner, then came in to play more Skylanders. Aunt O, Agu, M-lady and I headed out around 7:00 to see a musical, leaving the kids with Ama. They apparently had a very good evening, although Ama caught Bud awake late with the iPad under his sheets after lights out time.

Black Belt Prep

The kids were good about getting up in the morning, and I took them to school without incident. The kids had a good day, and M-lady came home in the afternoon to take Bud to piano. Nanny J brought Buster to piano a short time later, and then brought Bud towards the TKD studio for a late sessions.

I met them at a fast food place, and Bud and I had some dinner before going to the TKD practice. It was a session intended for those taking their black belt test soon: Bud won't be testing this fall, but is scheduled to test in the spring. The classes help him learn what's going to be expected of him.

Bud had a great time in class, learning a lot of stuff he hasn't seen before. They talked about some of the things that would be required for the test, then did basic conditioning, worked on shoulder rolls, proper falling technique, throws, and finally backflips. Bud was pretty excited to work on flips, and improved quite a bit through the class.

The class lasted two hours, and we got out around 8:30. I brought Bud home, where Buster had just gotten into bed. I helped get Bud to bed, then sat with Buster who was awake a bit late. Buster had had a fun evening with M-lady after they'd finished up the piano lesson, playing his new Skylanders game for the majority of it, and taking a break while eating dinner to watch some Mythbusters. He was pretty excited, and took a while to fall asleep.

Quick Evening

I got the kids ready for school on Wednesday morning, and M-lady dropped them off. I had bike racing again in the evening, so didn't make it home until a bit after 9:00. Bud was still up, and was excited to tell me a few things about his day, so I chatted with him for a couple minutes before he went to sleep.

This morning, M-lady and I rolled the kids out of bed, and I got them breakfast and got their hair combed. M-lady took them to school, and then volunteered in both their classes. They both were apparently doing very well.

I picked the kids up from TKD in the afternoon, where they looked like they were having fun and working hard. We had to take a slightly longer route due to traffic on the way home, and didn't arrive until 7:15. M-lady was out at an event, and we had to rush a little bit to get showers, dinner, piano, snack, and bedtime prep in.

The kids were good though, and we got it all done. Buster's new Xbox game (Skylanders) arrived in the mail, so we took a look at that, although he didn't have time to play it tonight. I'm sure he'll want to play tomorrow.

Buster was in bed and I was sitting with Bud when M-lady got home. Buster was still up, and said hello, and I had to go lie down with him again at about 9:00. He was pretty wired, and didn't fall asleep until nearly 9:30.

Backflip Research

The kids were good about getting up this morning, and I had a quick snuggle with Buster before he got up and got dressed. I got some breakfast for the kids, combed their hair, and M-lady took them to school. I headed off to work a few minutes later.

The kids had a good day at school. Bud reported that he had music class today, which he enjoyed. Nanny J picked them up from school, got them snacks, and made sure Bud did his homework before they headed off to TKD, where I met them.

The kids did a good job in TKD, and class wrapped up around 6:30. We got home at about 7:00, and M-lady was already getting dinner together. We had a nice meal together, and then piano practice before starting the snack and bedtime routine.

I discovered that Bud will have to do a backflip (with a spotter) for his TKD black belt test, so we spent the evening looking at youtube videos of back flips. We eventually found somebody with good form that I think Bud should emulate. Bud's got a pretty good jump, so I'm sure he'll be able to do it with a little coaching.

Labor Day BBQ

The kids were up early again, and eventually roused M-lady and myself to get them some breakfast. Bud was pretty excited about the scrambled eggs we'd had the day before, so I spent some time teaching him how to make scrambled eggs. He should be good to make them after a couple of practice runs.

M-lady headed out to run some errands in the later morning, and I took the kids to the grocery store. We generally stayed inside in the afternoon due to the heat today, and I played some Xbox with the kids. At about 3:00, M-lady and I started cooking, and Ama and Agu, and Aunt O and family arrived around 4:00 for a Labor Day meal / party.

We had a good time and a good meal, and chatted until about 7:00 or so. While Bud played outside, Buster, M-lady and I watched a little bit of an episode of Mythbusters before snack time. The kids were good about getting ready for bed, and I played with Buster a bit before turning out the lights at 8:30.
