Quick Trip

We all got up this morning around 7:30, and got packing. Bud packed up some books, helped Buster pack some books, and Buster put his octopus and blankey in a bag. We got all our stuff together, and then loaded into the car for a five-and-a-half hour drive to Santa Barbara.

The kids were great on the trip. They watched movies and played some Xbox in the back seat (which I'd brought along for the trip for the first time), and generally had a good time back there. We stopped for food and snacks along the way.

We arrived around 3:00, and got checked into our hotel. The kids were really excited, bouncing off the beds as M-lady and I tried to rest a bit. I eventually took the kids for a walk to find a shop to pick up some snacks for the evening, and we found a grocery store across the street. We returned and packed up the snacks, got dressed, and headed out to pick up some dinner on the way to a dance rehearsal.

M-lady and I attended and performed at a tribute for our dance mentor, Friend R. We rehearsed the dances beforehand, at about 6:30, and the tribute started at 7:30 or so. The kids were awesome, and watched the rehearsal, and then sat through the tribute which ended with our dance performance. Buster got a little bored about halfway through, and played with an iPad, but Bud sat quietly and seemed to enjoy the whole thing. I was so proud of how well behaved both kids were, and they accepted a number of compliments graciously.

The event wrapped up around 9:30, and we headed back to the hotel with the kids. They were pretty tired, although Buster was a little wired. Bud fell asleep quickly, but Buster didn't drop off until about 10:45.

Testing Day

The kids jumped in bed with me this morning around 7:00, and wished me a happy birthday, which was nice. We got rolling around 7:30, and the kids got dressed and fed with Ama and Agu's help. The grandparents took Bud off to his last day of TKD camp while I waited for Nanny J with Buster.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I arrived home from work early, right around 4:00. Ama and Agu and Bud were just leaving to go to Aunt O and Uncle C's house. I headed in, dropped my stuff, wished Nanny J a good weekend, and then headed out with Buster to his TKD belt test.

We arrived about 15 minutes before his 5:00pm test, and he had time to use the bathroom and join the review. Buster did a great job in his test. He was reasonably focused, answered his oral question solidly, and successfully broke his first board with an axe kick on the first try. Overall, he did a great job.

His test got out around 5:45, and due to traffic we didn't make it back to Aunt O and Uncle C's house until after 6:00. I had just a few minutes to have some dinner (again, wonderfully prepared by Ama and Agu) before loading up Bud and taking him for his 7:00pm belt test.

Bud's test started a little late, and ended up going pretty long. He was great, though, executing his punches, kicks, and forms very cleanly. He had no problem with the oral question, and broke his board on the first try with a stepping back kick.

Bud received another special recognition award, receiving a patch for leadership. He's one of the younger kids I've seen with that patch. He was really excited to get it.

After Bud's test, we headed back to Aunt O and Uncle C's place, where M-lady had arrived. We were all happy to see her.

We had cream puffs from Beard Papa to celebrate my birthday, and I had a chance to open my gifts before we packed up and headed home. It was already an hour past the kids' bedtime, so we got them in the shower and then into bed as quickly as we could.

Buster was excited to snuggle with M-lady, and I chatted with Bud for a few minutes before letting him go to sleep around 10:00.

Kick Practice

Buster crawled in bed with me around 7:00, and let me snooze until it was time to get up, around 7:30. Both kids got up and got ready pretty quickly, and helped pick up a bit in preparation for the house cleaners. Agu took Bud off to TKD, and a bit later I took Buster to summer school.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud qualified to test for his next belt in TKD, which means both kids will be testing tomorrow. Unfortunately, they test two hours apart, since Bud has gotten pretty senior.

I got home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. Ama and Agu were out, so the kids and I played together for a bit. We read some stories, and played a little bit of Wii bowling before getting some dinner. The kids ate pretty well, and Ama and Agu arrived as we were finishing up.

After dinner, Bud did his piano, and Buster played on the Xbox for a bit. After piano, Bud practiced his kicks, targeting held pads and my hands. His kicks are good (really good, actually), but his hamstrings are very tight (probably just a product of his current growth pattern), so he has trouble extending his kicks properly. We stretched together a bit, too, but he doesn't like to stretch.

Snack time came up pretty quickly, and the kids ate and headed upstairs to get ready for bed. I studied the TKD oral questions with both kids, and they're both nailing the answers now. Both kids were in bed with lights out shortly after 8:30, and asleep before too long.

Studying at Bedtime

Buster again wandered in fairly early this morning. We got out of bed around 7:20, and got ready for a video call with M-lady a few minutes later. The kids were pretty excited to see her, and we had a nice chat before getting dressed and heading downstairs for breakfast.

Bud headed out to TKD camp with Ama and Agu, and I waited at home with Buster for Nanny J to arrive. We read some stories together, which was fun.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home a little late, around 8:00, and got the kids ready for bed. Buster and I read the book he's going to take to school tomorrow for Show and Tell (Edwina), and I was able to study their TKD oral questions with them before tucking them in. Buster was asleep before 9:00, and Bud soon after that.

Shortened Evening

Buster wandered in and crawled into bed with me at about 6:00. I've told him to wait until 7:00, but apparently he got confused and thought the 6 was a 9. In any case, he snoozed with me for half an hour or so before he ran off.

The kids were up and playing by 7:00, and around 7:30 we started getting them ready to go. Ama and Agu helped get them dressed and fed, and they took Bud off to TKD at about 8:15. Buster and I played Jenga together for a bit, and then headed off to his school about half an hour later.

The drop off was fine. Buster was excited to be in class, and headed straight for circle time. I headed off to work.

I got home around 5:45, and said goodbye to Nanny J. Ama and Agu had prepared a great dinner again, and everyone ate well. After dinner, I packed up and headed off to a dance rehearsal, while the kids stayed with the grandparents. They had a good time, and Bud did his piano practice.

They got ready for bed, and Buster was apparently particularly tired. I got home around 8:30, and he was already asleep. Bud was really excited to see me, and I read a story with him before turning out the light around 8:45.

Study Time

Buster crawled into bed with me at about 7:00, and Bud joined about 7:15. Agu got the kids moving around 7:25, a few minutes before I got up. The kids got dressed and had breakfast with the grandparents.

I needed to deal with some business with the TKD studio, so I took Bud to TKD camp. After dropping him off, I headed off to work. The kids had a good day, and Buster reported having fun in TKD as well. Bud got another tape on his belt, so is one tape away from being ready to test for the next level.

I arrived home around 5:45, and Nanny J had already left. The kids were playing happily with the grandparents. I dropped my things, and we had dinner a few minutes later. Both kids ate pretty well.

After dinner, I got Bud going on piano, and Buster played nearby. After piano, the kids played a little bit of Lego Batman until snack time. Buster was getting surly by that point, so I headed upstairs with him and he skipped his snack.

Before bed, I've been studying with Buster for the oral portion of his TKD belt test. There are 8 possible questions the instructors might ask, and Buster's now got about half of them nailed. He knows his home phone number, and can remember my birthday (but not M-lady's, for whatever reason). It's neat to see him remember one more answer each night.

This evening Bud wanted in on the studying, too, so I went over his belt test questions with him. His questions are getting more complex, given his higher belt, but he's doing pretty well with them. He may test as early as Wednesday, though, so we'll have to cram a little tomorrow.

Bud also got the rest of his TKD sparring pads today, so we tried those on and I got his name on everything this evening before turning out the lights. Both kids were asleep pretty quickly.

Rediscovering Wii

The kids were up around 8:00, and I rolled out of bed around 8:30 to make some breakfast. We had roll-up pancakes, which the kids enjoyed. After breakfast, I had time to start getting ready for a bike ride after getting the kids dressed.

Babysitter G arrived around 10:00, and I headed out for a ride. The kids had been pretty rambunctious during the morning, with lots of wrestling, but apparently settled down a bit with Babysitter G. I also delivered some Ninjago spinners we had in reserve for the kids to play with, and they seemed pretty excited about them.

When I returned at about 1:00, Ama and Agu had already arrived. The kids were sitting down to lunch, and Babysitter G gave a positive report. The kids had apparently riled up again a bit with the arrival of the grandparents, but otherwise been very well behaved.

After Babysitter G left, we all had some lunch together, and then I headed upstairs to clean up. When I came back down, I got the Wii resuscitated and fired up Wii Sports Resort. The kids had a great time with fencing, archery, bowling, table tennis, etc. They played that for a big chunk of the afternoon.

The bread I'd baked yesterday was a hit, so I made a double batch today in the late afternoon. Ama got dinner together, and we ended up eating around 6:00. The kids were just starting to get cranky, so the timing worked out well. Both kids ate pretty well, and everyone enjoyed the fresh bread.

After dinner I got Bud going on his piano practice, and even pulled out my guitar to play with him just a bit. I'd like to pick out a piece of music we can play together at some point.

I got Buster bathed, and that took up pretty much up to snack time. The kids had big snacks, and then Bud took his shower and we did the bedtime routine. Buster was asleep before 9:00, and Bud drifted off soon after.

Perhaps Spoiling

The kids jumped into bed with me around 8:00 this morning, and forced me up at about 8:30 to get them some breakfast. They both ate large breakfasts, and after eating I returned to bed briefly while they watched a video on the iPad.

After I got up for the second time, we got dressed and headed downstairs. After picking up the living room a bit, we turned on the Xbox, and played Kinectimals at their request. They had a good time re-engaging with their virtual pets, and Buster has gotten better at manipulating the controls.

While they played I worked on baking a loaf of bread. Bud was excited to help me mix the ingredients and knead the dough, and we had a good time doing that together. The bread was ready in time for lunch, and Bud ate about a third of the loaf. Buster passed on the fresh bread.

After lunch, we loaded up and headed out to the grocery store, where we picked up the essentials for the week. We also hit Target to pick up underwear for Bud, since he was complaining all his underwear is too small. He's now a boy's size small, rather than a child's size 5 or 6.

We played outside a bit when we got home, and the boys watched as I flew my helicopter for the first time in the backyard. Bud even shot some video of it with my iPhone. After doing a few short hovers, we headed out front, where we played catch with each other for a while before heading in.

The kids played a little more Xbox, playing a new/old game I'd saved for them for a while. I ordered a pizza around dinner time, and we headed out to pick it up.

The kids ate a solid dinner when we got home, and I had Bud practice piano after dinner. Bud and I chatted about TKD and did some stretching before snack time, when Buster joined us again. The kids had a quick snack and were good about getting ready for bed.

Less Successful Friday Night

The morning was as straightforward as usual, although Ama and Agu helped out, getting breakfast for the kids. Bud was ready to go in plenty of time, and Ama and Agu took him to TKD camp this morning. I played with Buster until Nanny J arrived at her usual time, around 8:45. I headed off to work soon after.

Buster had TKD from 11:00 to 12:00, and then they all came home for lunch. Apparently the kids had a very high energy afternoon playing with Ama and Agu, and were just settling down when I got home. A short time after I arrived, Ama and Agu headed out to Aunt O and Uncle C's place.

I got the usual movie night dinner going, and fired up Mulan, since it was my turn to choose. I think the kids were a little tired, though, as they whined about the selection. I told them they didn't have to watch, and they took me up on it. Buster headed to his room and went into one of his angry moods, and Bud went upstairs to read. I watched the movie.

Bud came down and watched bits and pieces, and ate some dinner (but opted to eat in the kitchen, reading, rather than in front of the TV with me). Buster had made a mess of his room and the living room, and stayed grumpy until snack time. He came out of his funk (it's like a switch getting thrown), and had his dinner right before bed.

I got the kids ready for bed, and we had a pretty standard bedtime (although I had Buster pick up his room), watching some shorts on iPads. Both kids were tucked in by about 8:45, and asleep pretty soon after that.

The Cavalry

Buster crawled into bed with me this morning around 7:00, and we got up around 7:30. Bud was pretty good about getting up, and after I got Buster dressed we all headed downstairs for breakfast. The kids ate solidly, and I packed up and headed off with Bud to TKD camp when Nanny J arrived. Nanny J took Buster to his summer preschool a short time later.

Bud received his blue belt in TKD in a morning ceremony after competently answering the oral questions of the instructor. I was able to hang out for the ceremony, and then headed off to work.

Ama and Agu arrived shortly before I got home. They had stopped by Aunt O and Uncle C's place to drop off some furniture they'd brought up from San Diego. I arrived home just as Nanny J was leaving.

The kids were pretty excited to see Ama and Agu, and Buster had his bib on and was sitting at the table, waiting for dinner. We all ate pretty well, and after dinner I got Bud started on his piano practice, which Ama supervised. Buster and I spent some time picking up the living room, and then he played a bit of Lego Indiana Jones while Bud played catch in the living room with Ama and Agu with stuffed AngryBirds.

Snack time came up pretty quickly, and the kids devoured the cherries Ama and Agu had brought with them. Buster in particular enjoyed the cherries, and had red juice all over his face and hands afterwards. A bit of washing got him presentable again, and I got him into PJs while Bud did his own bedtime routine.

I studied Buster's yellow belt test questions with him (he'll be testing next week) before watching a short video and turning out the light. Then I sat with Bud for a bit, and we chatted about the day. Both kids fell asleep pretty quickly.

Break Day

M-lady called early this morning, and I rousted the kids so we could have a video chat with her. We had a nice chat, and the kids were happy to see her. Bud showed off his sparring gear, and Buster sat on my lap and chatted a bit. Eventually, we had to say goodbye and get ready for the day. Bud was good about getting ready, and after getting Buster dressed I got some breakfast for the kids.

Nanny J arrived, and I took Bud off to TKD. The drop off went fine, and I headed off to work.

Bud had a good day at TKD, and the kids had fun playing with Nanny J in the afternoon. Around 6:30, Babysitter G arrived, and took over. They had fun playing with her for a bit, and apparently had a good dinner and snack. Buster went to sleep a bit early, but Bud was still up at 9:00 when I got home.

I had a quick chance to chat with Bud before he fell asleep, and had a nice catch up with him before he went to sleep. Bud told me about earning his blue belt today, and we talked about when I can go for his belt ceremony. I checked on Buster as well, who was sleeping soundly.

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

The morning routine went pretty well, and I had both kids ready to go shortly after 8:00. Nanny J arrived, and I confirmed that she would be dropping Buster off at his summer school. I then loaded up Bud and we headed off to TKD camp.

Bud let me know last night that he needed a set of sparring pads for camp. We got him the pads when we got to camp, but they were sold of his size on some of the pieces. He was able to borrow some for the day, however. Once he was all set, I headed off to work.

I got home around 5:45, and was greeted by Buster. He had enjoyed class, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids seemed a bit hungry, so I got started on getting dinner on the table. We ended up eating together at the kids table set up in the nook, which was kind of fun.

Nanny J had taken Bud to his piano lesson in the afternoon, so we skipped piano practice this evening. After dinner, Buster played on the xbox a bit while Bud and I took a closer look at his new pads and duffle bag. He also had a new mouthguard, so we spent some time getting that fitted properly.

Snack time came up pretty quickly, and the kids had otterpops before getting ready for bed. I read a story and watched a quick video with Buster before tucking him in, and then sat with Bud for a short while before tucking him in as well. Buster was asleep before 9:00, and Bud hung on until about 9:30.

Earning Tape

M-lady was pocking this morning when I got up a little late, as I had forgotten to set my alarm the previous evening. I got up and got Bud motivated, got him some breakfast, and loaded him up to take him to TKD camp. Nanny J arrived to watch Buster around the time I was leaving. We said goodbye to M-lady, who took off on a business trip for a couple weeks today.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster did a TKD class from 11-12, which was the last hour of Bud's TKD camp. They both took showers in the afternoon, and were pretty happy when I arrived home around 5:45. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and I got started on marshaling dinner while the kids played.

Buster was excited to tell me that he got all the tape indicators on his belt that he needs to qualify for the next test. He's all set to test for his senior yellow belt, so we'll have to start practicing the questions. The test is in two weeks, so there's plenty of time.

The kids ate pretty well at dinner, and I got Bud to do his piano practice afterward. We played for a bit, watched a little TV, had a snack, and headed for bed. The kids were well behaved all evening, and I was able to turn the lights out just after 8:30.

Bud's excited to head back to TKD camp tomorrow, and Buster will be starting his preschool summer camp as well.

Happy Father's Day

The kids were rambunctious this morning, but M-lady directed them generally away from me so I could sleep in a bit. I got up around the time M-lady was getting breakfast together, about 8:45 or so. I had some pancakes with the kids, and then hung out with the kids a bit. I eventually got Buster dressed.

M-lady and the kids gave me Father's Day cards and gifts, which were very nice. I played with the kids for a bit, and then we got started on making the Father's Day phone calls. I chatted with RuggerMom for a bit first, since it was her birthday yesterday (Happy Birthday, RuggerMom!), and then had nice video chats with the grandparents in succession. The kids were pretty vigorous, but all the grandfathers got wished a Happy Father's Day.

It was near time for lunch when we wrapped up, and we cleaned up some leftovers. The kids ate pretty well. After lunch, there was more playing inside since it was a bit hot outside again today. In the late afternoon, Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C arrived. The kids had a great, loud time playing together. Buster wiped out a couple of times, and before dinner I slowed things down a little bit with some TV.

We all had a good dinner together, with Buster and Cousin C sitting at a smaller table. After dinner, Uncle C and I took off to catch a movie. Cousin C and Aunt O headed home before too long, and M-lady put the kids to bed without too much trouble.

Saturday, June 16, 2012

Hot Day Out

The kids jumped on us around 8:00, and I woke thinking I needed to go to work. After a bit I realized that it was Saturday, and went back to sleep for a bit.

M-lady took off around 8:45 for a ballet class, and I rolled out of bed a few minutes later to get breakfast for the kids after urging them to get dressed. I made roll-up pancakes for them, which they enjoyed.

Bud had found his old Leapster, and asked me to put new batteries in it. I complied, and then spent a little time figuring out how to recalibrate the screen before it was usable again. Once fixed, the kids spent a good amount of the morning playing together with the Leapster. I think Bud is on the edge of outgrowing it, but Buster is just about to grow into it.

We played on the computer for a few minutes before Nanny J arrived home, and got started on making lunch for the kids. I packed up and headed out for a bike ride, which turned out to be tougher than I expected since the temperature was soaring. I cut my ride short after baking for a bit, and headed home. M-lady and the kids had gone out to run some errands, and arrived home shortly after I did.

After showering I played on the computer with Buster again for a short time, and then we all packed up and headed out to Red Robin for dinner. It wasn't overly crowded, and we had a nice meal. Buster ate almost double the amount of food he usually does, which suggests he's either hit a growth spurt or was too busy to eat today.

We all did a grocery shopping run before heading home. The kids were well behaved, and we didn't take too long. In the car on the way home, Buster had a bloody nose, which we were able to take care of as soon as we arrived. It didn't seem to bother him at all, and I sat with him away from the carpet for a bit until we decided his nose was done bleeding.

Showers for the kids followed, and then snack and bed time. The kids were good through the process, and in bed a few minutes later than usual, but not too out of whack. I read a story with Buster, and we turned out the light shortly before 9:00.

Pixar Movie Night

The morning was fairly straightforward, with the kids up a bit early, still excited that they didn't have school. I got them some breakfast before heading out right around the time Nanny J arrived.

The kids had a good day. M-lady arrived to take Bud to his piano class, and I was able to get home a little early, shortly after 5:00.I had to handle some work email, though, and that kept me busy until M-lady returned and we'd said goodbye to Nanny J for the weekend.

We got settled in front of the TV before too long, and M-lady chose the movie of the night: Pixar's Monsters, Inc.. There are a few brief scary parts, but we laid those out beforehand to Buster, and he handled them well. The kids really liked the silly parts, which was the majority of the film.

We had dinner in front of the TV, and wrapped up the movie a bit after 8:00. We had some popcorn for snack time, and then bundled the kids of to bed. I chatted with Bud after we turned the light out a bit before 9:00, and he went to sleep soon after.

Keeping Secrets

The morning was fairly straightforward again, simplified by the lack of school. I got breakfast for the kids before heading out around 8:30, and M-lady waited for Nanny J to arrive.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home a few minutes after M-lady had arrived. Buster greeted me at the door, immediately letting me know that a big box had arrived, M-lady had opened it, and that it was my Father's Day present. Bud was a bit chagrined. Buster really wanted to show me the present, but I managed to avoid it.

We all hung out in bed for a few minutes before I got dinner for the kids. M-lady ate a short time later, after helping Bud with his piano practice. The kids had a brief media time, with Buster playing Xbox and Bud playing on the iPad before snack started. I got Buster ready for bed, and we watched a little bit of Shaun the Sheep before turning out the light.

First Real Day of Summer Vacation

M-lady had an early call this morning, but I enjoyed sleeping in a bit since the kids didn't have to be anywhere. I rolled out of bed a little after 8:00, got Buster dressed, and then got breakfast for the kids before heading out for work around 8:30, when M-lady got off her call. She waited for Nanny J, and then headed in herself.

The kids seem to have had a good day. They went to TKD in the afternoon, and both kids were recognized with 'tapes' on their belts, indicating that they're ready in some aspect for the next level. Bud got enough tapes to qualify for his next belt test, and Buster got a tape for his kicks. Buster immediately let me know all this when I walked in the door around 5:30.

After Nanny J left, I got the kids settled in front of the TV and jumped on a work call. M-lady arrived home a short time later, and when I got off my call, all four of us watched a few minutes of TV before turning it off and starting on dinner. The kids ate solid dinners, and Bud did piano practice afterwards while I played with Buster a bit.

We got the kids into PJs after that, and then had some popcorn and fruit for snack. I watched a video with Bud before turning out the light around 9:00.

Tuesday, June 12, 2012

Buster crawled into bed with us pretty early this morning, and M-lady and I rolled out of bed around 7:30. The morning routine was pretty standard for a Tuesday, and M-lady took Bud to school while I hung out with Buster until Nanny J arrived.

Today was Bud's last day of first grade. He got out early today, around lunchtime, and came home for a bit before the kids went to TKD in the afternoon. M-lady got home to take the kids from Nanny J, as I was heading out for a bike race in the evening.

They had a pleasant evening, and I managed to get home just as Bud was being tucked into bed. I congratulated him on finishing first grade, and helped tuck him in. Buster apparently asked if it was the weekend tomorrow. It's not, but neither he nor Bud has school, so he's looking forward to playing all day.

Monday, June 11, 2012

Last Usual Day

Buster has generally been very good about coming in after 7:00, and he did well this morning as well. He didn't have school today, though, and was pretty happy about the prospect of playing all day (even though he does that most of the time anyways). I got Bud ready for school, and dropped him off in plenty of time.

The kids had a good day. M-lady got home for the standard evening routine as I visited with some friends in town for the week, and I got home around 7:30, after they'd had some dinner and Bud was working on piano. Buster was excited to see me, and the kids hung out with me as I had some dinner.

I did snack time with the kids, and then watched a Shaun the Sheep video with Buster before bed. We chatted a bit after turning out the light, and he was asleep before 9:00.

Staying' In

I headed out fairly early for a bike ride this morning. The kids were up when I left, and M-lady got them some breakfast shortly after I took off. Apparently they had pancakes.

I got back just before lunchtime, and the kids were just getting hungry again. We had some lunch together, and M-lady headed out to run some errands afterward. The afternoon was spent relaxing inside away from the heat. We watched the end of the movie we'd started on Friday, and the kids had a good time playing. We played with iPads and board games, read a little, and eventually headed outside to play a bit after the hottest part of the day.

M-lady arrived home around 5:00ish, and we had some dinner a bit later. Buster had fallen asleep, but we managed to wake him up to take a shower and then have some dinner. After getting him bathed and fed, I headed out to visit with some friends while M-lady managed the snack and bedtime routine.

Saturday, June 09, 2012

bud crawled into our bed fairly early, but he tends to lie still, so it wasn't a big deal. Buster has been good about waiting until 7:00, but tends to arrive with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. There was a lot of rolling around and kicking for a while, and then M-lady got up and got them breakfast.

M-lady packed up a short time after that, and headed off to ballet class. I got up before too long, helped get Buster dressed, got myself going, got a second breakfast for the kids, and then played a little bit of Arkham Horror with Bud. We took a break when he started losing interest.

I decided to see if we could get the grocery shopping done, so we packed up and headed out. The kids were pretty cooperative, and we had a good time. We got back just after M-lady had arrived home, and all had some lunch together.

After lunch, Bud and I headed outside so he could practice riding his bike. He hasn't tried that in a while, and he's a lot stronger at he used to be. He's solid while riding, just needs more practice starting and stopping. But the time we'd finished, he was pretty good at stopping, too.

Once his pedaling skills were confirmed, he and I headed of to a nearby bike store that I was delighted to discover stocks a full range of tandem bikes. They had the model I'd been interested in from online research, and we sized Bud for the stoker seat. He just fit, so we got set up for a test ride.

We had a great (if short) test ride, cruising around for about 20 minutes. Bud had a great time, although his butt and hands were getting sore. He was all set to buy the bike when we got back to the store, though. I asked a few more questions about the bike, and then we came home.

M-lady and Buster were still out running some of their errands, so Bud and I had a snack. The others arrived shortly, and the kids and I headed outside for a while. Bud worked on his biking skills for a while, and then the kids played in the yard for a bit.

They eventually came in, and Bud did his piano while Buster and I played on the XBox for a bit. We had dinner a short time thereafter, and Babysitter G arrived around 7:00. The kids were reasonably excited to see her, and we're happily playing UNO with her when we left to go see a dance show. The kids were apparently very well behaved for the rest of the evening.

Ping Pong

Buster came in around 7:00 this morning, and curled up on the rug on the floor. I've told him the past couple of days that he needs to start looking at the clock, and stay in bed until 7:00... he seems to have absorbed that one. Bud was up reading by the time I got up, and I got both kids going without trouble. Buster and I took Bud to school, then came back to meet Nanny J.

I arrived home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. I was pretty beat, so we turned on the TV and watched an episode of Shaun the Sheep together before I got started on dinner. The kids ate reasonably well, and I got Bud started on his piano practice after dinner. Bud hasn't had homework this week (last full week of school), so we haven't had to worry about that.

After piano, the kids started playing 'ping pong' with found objects, set up their own clever table. They were emulating a favorite episode of Backyardigans, and really had a great time playing pretend ping pong. It was a very high-energy evening.

When the time rolled around, we had a quick snack and bedtime routine. We watched a little more Shaun the Sheep on the iPad together before tucking in. The kids were pretty excited about seeing M-lady tomorrow.

Some Driving

Both kids slept in this morning, so I had to rouse the both. They were good about getting up, though. We did a standard morning routine, and got out of the house on time. I dropped them off at their schools sequentially, and headed in to work.

The kids had a good day with Nanny J, and enjoyed TKD after school. Bud reported that they had a talent show at school, and he had played piano. I wasn't able to get much more information about it from him, though.

After I got home and settled, we started up the Xbox and played a driving/racing game called Forza 3. Buster was particularly interested, and took a turn driving around on the test track, which he though was immense fun. Bud took a turn as well, and did a good job of navigating the track.

I got dinner together, and the kids ate reasonably well. After dinner Bud tackled piano, and then had a snack. We did a quick bedtime routine, watched a show on the iPad all together, and I tucked the kids into bed.

An Evening Walk

Buster was up early, and jumped in bed with us shortly after 6:00. I think it's time to start imposing time limits on getting into bed with us. M-lady rolled out of bed fairly early, helped Buster get dressed, got him some breakfast, and got started on getting herself ready.

I got up around 7:30, rolled Bud out of bed, and got myself up. Buster had a second breakfast, and we were all ready to go around 8:15. M-lady's ride to the airport arrived around the same time, and we said goodbye, as she's off to Dallas for a few days.

After dropping off Bud, Buster and I came back home, where we waited for Nanny J. I headed for work when she arrived.

The kids had a good day, and enjoyed TKD. I got home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids were willing to have an early dinner, and then we got our shoes on and walked over to the local polling station to drop off M-lady's and my ballots. I discussed politics in general with Bud on the way there.

The polling station was right next to the local park and playground, and Buster requested a detour on the way home. We played on the playground for a bit, before walking home and getting into PJs. Snack and bedtime followed pretty quickly.

I watched an episode of Shaun the Sheep with the kids before we turned out the light around 8:30. Both kids behaved well all evening, although Buster was hoping for M-lady to come home. We'll be just fine for a couple of days while she's gone, though.

Annual Visit

Both kids were up early the past couple days, but on their school morning, they both slept late... fortunately, neither was too difficult to rouse, and they were ready to go in plenty of time. I took Buster to class, while M-lady took Bud.

I had a dentist appointment in the late morning, and decided to work from home. When I arrived home after the appointment, Nanny J and Buster were already home. Buster was having a good time playing in the bathroom sink.

They went out to pick up Bud from school before too long, and when they got home I packed up snacks for the boys and hustled them out the door again. We left Nanny J at home, and the three of us headed off to the boys' annual physicals. We met M-lady outside the doctor's office, and proceeded in.

Bud had been worrying about getting a shot a little bit, but otherwise was fine. Both boys were actually pretty excited, and bouncing around the office. The kids got weighed in, and then had sight tests, and both did fine (Buster got to say pictures rather than letters... Bud got the full eye chart, though). Buster then had his hearing tested, which he also passed with flying colors.

The doctor quizzed the kids a bit, and both answered questions pretty well (although Bud didn't look at the doctor while he was answering). The exams went fine, and both kids are perfectly healthy. After chatting a bit, we got to the shots: Bud had one and Buster had two. Bud went first, and cringed a bit, but was fine after the fact. Buster was totally impassive, and didn't seem to mind the shots at all.

Buster got a sticker on the way out, and we headed home. Nanny J got the kids bathed, and then took her leave around 5:45. Bud got his homework done, and we had a fairly early dinner together.

After dinner, Buster played some Xbox, and Bud did his piano practice. Snack and bedtime were pretty standard. I watched an episode of Shaun the Sheep with Buster on the iPad, and we turned out the light a little early. We chatted a little bit about the doctor's appointment, and Buster drifted off to sleep before too long.

Relaxed Sunday

The kids invaded at about 8:00 this morning. Buster brought all the plush life he could find, along with several big blankets, and made a nest for himself pretty much on top of us in our bed. We eventually got up, and I headed downstairs with them around 9:00 to make the kids some breakfast.

M-lady headed out to ballet a short time later, and the kids and I played together. I played some Arkham Horror with Bud, and then both kids and I played on the computer together for a bit. When I realized how late it had gotten, I made the kids get dressed.

I had some lunch at that point, and offered lunch to the kids, but neither took me up on it. After eating, I headed out to the garage to work for a bit, and Buster followed me out, while Bud stayed inside to read and play with Lego. Eventually the kids agreed to lunch, but it wasn't until a bit after 2:00. M-lady arrived home again while they were munching.

I headed out to run some errands, and then worked in the garage some more when I arrived home around 4:30. Buster joined me for a bit, and Bud came out as well, eventually. Buster spent some time on the glider bike for the first time, and Bud gave him some pointers.

We headed in for dinner, which M-lady prepared, and all had a good meal. After eating, Bud did his piano, and then we spent a little time with the iPads. We had a nice video chat with Grandma W, during which Buster again climbed all over me, but he seemed to enjoy saying hello. After the chat we got the kids into the shower, snacked, and headed for bed.

I read Greek myth stories to Bud, and we discussed how the same story can be told with different details. I filled him in on some alternate details for some of the stories, and we had a good chat before turning out the light around 8:30.

Hosting Twice

M-lady got breakfast for the kids this morning, while I got myself ready for a bike ride. I headed out around 8:30. M-lady took the kids to the grocery store while I was out, after having some breakfast.

Around 11:00, Bud's Friend N arrived for a playdate. They had a good time, and were remarkably good about including Buster as well. I arrived home again as they were getting ready to have lunch, which M-lady provided.

I ran a quick errand, and convinced Buster to come with me. We had a good time, and made it back home a short time before Friend N's father arrived to pick him up. After saying goodbye to Friend N, we settled in a bit and had a quick snack. M-lady ran out to run some errands, and I rested with the boys a bit.

Around 4:30 I started working on getting dinner ready, and M-lady pitched in as well before too long. At 6:00, our friends D and R arrived for dinner. The kids played on their own as M-lady and I completed dinner preparations, and then had a good dinner with us. After dinner, they watched an episode of Backyardigans before snack time.

I got both kids ready for bed while M-lady entertained our guests, and we watched a video on the iPad before turning out the lights around 9:00ish. Both kids went to sleep without any trouble.

Good Movie Pick

The morning was again straightforward, and I took Buster to school. The dropoff went fine, and I headed off to work after that.

M-lady was home in time to take Bud to his piano lesson. Bud really is doing very well with piano, even though he resists practicing on occasion. I got home shortly after they arrived, and we all said goodbye to Nanny J.

We got started on the movie pretty quickly. M-lady and I got dinner going, and I arrayed a selection of DVDs for Buster, since it was his turn to pick this week. He selected Fantasia, which turned out to be a really good choice. Both kids enjoyed it, even the really abstract parts. It was nice to be able to chat during the film without worrying about missing dialog as well.

Unfortunately, I drowsed off towards the end. I woke as we shut the movie off, and we did a standard snack and bed time. I got to put Buster to bed, and we had a good time reading stories and playing a quick game.
