Birthday Parties

The kids woke this morning fairly early, and M-lady snuggled and got up with them to get them some breakfast. I woke late, and helped the kids put a card together for one of the birthday parties of the day.

Around 11:00, Bud and I loaded up and went to his Friend K's birthday. The party was at a bowling alley, and Bud got to go bowling for the first time. They were using bumpers, and Bud and his friends had a really great time. There were a number of wild shots, a fair number of wipeouts and the occasional marked frame. Bud kept his feet most of the time, and we came away with Bud wanting to go bowling again.

Bud got some lunch at the party, and we headed straight over to Cousin C's house for his birthday party. M-lady and Buster were already there, and the party was in full swing. Bud got involved with playing with the kids, and everyone generally had a good time.

We came home after cake and presents, and both the boys opted to come with me while M-lady hung out with her sister before running some errands on the way home. The kids kept themselves entertained when we got home, and I was able to snooze for a short time before they demanded snacks.

We watched an episode of Ninjago before M-lady arrived home, and then I headed out back to play some basketball with Bud. We had fun shooting around before I ran out to run a quick errand at Home Depot. I got started on dinner when I returned, and everyone ate well.

I watched a few minutes of TV with Buster before snack time, and then got Buster ready for bed. We watched a little more video on the iPad before turning the lights out, and he drifted off a few minutes later after the busy day.

Showing What He Knows

Buster was up about 7:00 again, and checked on me before returning to his room to play for a bit. Bud was up in his bed, reading, when I got up around 7:30 and started getting the kids ready. We had a pleasant morning, and everyone was ready to go in time. The drop-offs went smoothly, and I headed off to work.

I came home around 4:00, and found Buster mostly ready to go to TKD for his first belt test. Bud went to his piano lesson with Nanny J while I took Buster to his belt test. We arrived in time for Buster to join the end of the practice session, where Buster wowed the Master by answering one of the more complex oral questions (Buster had all the questions down stone cold).

The white belts tested first, and Buster did as good a job as anyone. His punches and kicks were all placed pretty well, and he clearly knew his form well. I was proud of him. When it came time to answer the oral question, he was a little hesitant, but managed to get through it. The white belts have a pretty short test, and I congratulated him as we headed home.

It took a while to get home through traffic, and we arrived a few minutes after 6:00. Buster had fallen asleep in the car, and dozed for about 15 minutes before we got home. He curled up on the couch for a bit after we came inside. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and started thinking about dinner.

M-lady arrived home a few minutes later, and everyone was happy to see her. The kids were really excited, and there was a lot of running around and yelling. I headed out to pick up some dinner, and Buster got a good snuggle in with M-lady before taking a bath.

We had some dinner when I got back, and a snack shortly after. The kids were pretty good about getting ready for bed, and I watched a few vids with Bud before turning the light out a bit after 8:30. Buster and M-lady got a little more snuggle time before turning out the light as well.

Quick Run Out

Buster was up around 7:00 this morning. He wandered in, threw an octopus on the bed, and wandered out again. He was downstairs playing when I got up around 7:30 to get the kids going on the morning routine, and a little reluctant to come upstairs to get dressed. I brought the clothes down to him instead.

The kids were pretty good about getting out the door, and Buster and I dropped Bud off at school. We came home, and Buster had an unexplained grumpy episode when we came inside. He was still grumpy when Nanny J arrived, but was giggling by the time I headed out for work a few minutes later.

The kids had a good day, went to TKD, and Buster had his bath before I got home around 5:45. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and then immediately loaded up into the car to go to the grocery store. The kids were both whiny when we left, but lightened up when we got to the store. We did a quick shop, and then headed back home to have some dinner.

Bud powered through his homework, and we had dinner together. Unfortunately, I broke a glass storage bowl right after I'd gotten dinner set up for the kids, and cleaning that up kept me occupied during dinner. After dinner, Bud tackled his piano practice, and we all chilled for about 15 minutes before snack time.

The kids had some ice cream at snack time, and then got ready for bed. Bud took his shower, and I did some more studying with Buster for his TKD belt test. He's pretty much got all the questions locked in now. We turned the light out around 8:30, and the kids were asleep pretty quickly.

Trying Something New

Bud was up a bit before 7:30, around the same time I got up. He read in bed for a bit, but was generally good about getting ready when the time came. Buster was hard to get out of bed, but I managed to get him going and fed. We loaded into the car around 8:15, and took Bud to school. Then Buster and I came home and waited for Nanny J for a few minutes.

The kids went to TKD today, and Buster had a bath in the afternoon. Since Bud didn't bathe, I put it on the list of activities for the evening, along with piano practice and homework. Bud was good about attacking his homework (with a snack) as soon as we said goodbye to Nanny J.

It was raining, and Bud wanted to play basketball outside. I pulled M-lady's car out of the garage, and Bud was able to play with his ball in there for a bit. While he was doing that, Buster and I checked out a new game I had received in the mail. Actually, more of a simulator. Buster entertained himself with Machinarium while I got it installed, but both kids found it very interesting when it was up and running. Bud even took a few tries at flying a plane, and both kids laughed at the crashes.

We got started on dinner around 7:00, and Buster was a bit reluctant. Bud ate well, though. After dinner, Bud did his piano, and then really wanted to see the RC planes we have in storage in the garage, so we spent a few minutes pulling them down and looking at them before heading back inside for a snack.

Buster ate his dinner at snack time, which stretched out a bit. Bud got his shower taken care of while I got Buster into PJs, and I got the lights out for the kids a bit after 8:30. Both kids fell asleep pretty quickly.

Breakfast Dinner

Bud was good about getting up this morning, but Buster took a little bit of rousing. I was able to get him up and dressed, though, and we headed out to school on time. We dropped Bud off and then headed over to Buster's school, where the door was opening just as we arrived.

The kids seem to have had a good day again. I arrived home at 5:45, and Buster had just taken his bath. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and Bud tackled his homework after having a quick snack. Buster watched an episode of Ninjago while Bud was occupied.

After Ninjago, I turned on the Stanford Women's basketball game, and Bud wanted to go out back to play basketball. Since it was still light out, I let him head out there. Buster and I watched some of the game, and I got started on making dinner around halftime.

We had a 'breakfast dinner': eggs and bagels and whatnot, and the kids ate really well. After dinner, Bud banged out his piano practice, and we had about ten minutes to watch Harry Potter specials before snack and bed time. I studied Buster's TKD oral test questions with him before bed, and then watched a quick video with him before turning out the lights. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

I then watched a quick video with Bud, and tucked him in as well. He was a little grumpy that I'd paid so much attention to Buster, and took longer to fall asleep. I lay with him for a bit, though, and we chatted a bit before he dropped off.

Lazy Sunday

Buster jumped in bed with me this morning around 7:00, and threw the big octopus on the bed next to me as well. He crawled out again a short time later, and made off with an iPad, which kept the boys entertained for a while. I got up a bit later in the morning, got the kids dressed, and was getting them breakfast at about 10:00 when Babysitter G arrived.

I had prepped the kids for the arrival of Babysitter G, so they took it in stride and were both playing with her when I headed out. I had originally intended to go for a bike ride, but it was threatening rain, so I did some shopping instead. I swung by Party City to pick up some kaleidoscopes for Buster on the advice of his teacher, and found some costume pirate rings as well, which Bud has been on about recently.

I arrived home around 12:30 with Jamba Juice, which the kids enjoyed for lunch. They liked the rings and kaleidoscopes, too, and took them to play in a rocketship they had created with the PlayHut tents.
Mid-afternoon they asked if they could play outside, but it was still raining a bit. So I backed M-lady's car out of the garage, and the kids played in there while I puttered around the garage a bit. We did that for a while, and when the rain slacked the kids had the opportunity to run around outside a bit. We finally headed back inside a bit after 4:00.

Bud and I settled in to watch the third Harry Potter film, The Prisoner of Azkaban. Buster played with an iPad in another room for most of the film, but wandered in from time to time. We took a break around 6:00 to have some dinner, and then finished up the film.

Bud did his piano practice, and we watched a couple of DVD specials from the film before snack time. The kids were good about getting ready for bed again, and were tucked in with the lights out around 8:30. Buster was particularly gassed, and was asleep almost as soon as the light went out. Bud and I talked about the film a little bit, and I tried to straighten out the time travel sequence for him a bit.

Saturday Without M-lady

I was able to sleep in a bit this morning, as M-lady was up and getting prepared for her trip. I rousted myself around 9:30 and got some breakfast, and we said goodbye to M-lady a short time later as she headed out for a business trip for the week.

The kids ate a very late breakfast, and after eating we hung out together a bit. Buster was hot on playing more Machinarium, which he restarts occasionally. We've played through the whole game a couple of times already, and he brings it to me occasionally to help him out with some of the puzzles.

Bud was pretty hungry all day, and so had a snack before lunch. At lunchtime, neither child was particularly interested in eating, so I had lunch myself. The kids followed before too long.

In the early afternoon I made the attempt to get out and get the groceries. The kids whined and griped, and I ended up sending both of them to their rooms for an attitude adjustment. They emerged again after a few minutes with better manners, and we had a good time heading to the grocery store and picking up a few things.

We watched a little TV before packing up and heading out to Red Robin for dinner. It was rainy all day, though, and apparently Red Robin was a choice destination, because even though we arrived pretty early, it was already crowded. I was quoted a 20 minute wait, which the kids agreed to. Fortunately, they called our name within 5 minutes.

The kids ate well, and we headed back home after a solid meal. The kids were feeling damp from walking in the rain a bit, and both bathed and got into PJs. We had time to watch a little more TV before snack and bedtime.

Out A Little Late

The kids were pretty good about getting ready to go this morning, and I headed out with Buster in plenty of time to get him to school, while M-lady took Bud. M-lady returned home early enough to get Bud to his piano class, and I got home around the same time they returned from the lesson. Bud apparently did very well with the new piece he's working on.

After getting a few items taken care of, we packed up in the car and headed to the mall. We picked up some dinner first, and then the kids and I hit the Lego store while M-lady ran an errand. She caught up with us before we'd made it out of the Lego store, which we managed to escape without purchasing anything.

We stopped by the Apple store on the way out, and headed home shortly after that. When we got in the car we realized that we'd been out a little late, and didn't get home until slightly after the usual bedtime. The kids had a quick snack and then got ready for bed.

We'd listened to some Riverdance music in the car, which had ignited Bud's desire to see Riverdance again. We watched a little bit of one of the concert DVDs before turning out the light a bit after 9:00.

Quick Learner

M-lady had to head to work a little early this morning, so I wrangled the kids. It was pretty easy, as Bud was good about getting ready, and Buster slept in nearly until Nanny J arrived at 8:15. I took Bud to school before heading off to work.

The kids had a good day. M-lady and I arrived home at the same time, as a naked Buster was running around after his bath. Bud had again opted to delay his shower after TKD.

Buster had received his last two tape marks on his belt today, indicating that he is ready to test up from white belt to yellow belt. He was very excited and proud. Since the test is about a week away, after settling in I got started on reviewing the oral questions with him. I figured the tough ones would be the phone number and address, so I got started on phone number right away.

I had to duck out for a work call at about 6:00, and M-lady got dinner for the kids while I was occupied. Buster came and sat on my lap for the last ten minutes of my call, and then joined me downstairs playing Machinarium while Bud did a piano practice. Snack time came up pretty quickly, and then I got Buster ready for bed while M-lady oversaw Bud's shower.

As we were getting ready for bed, Buster and I went over the questions again. The last one was the phone number, and with just a little hesitation, Buster was able to recite the full ten-digit number. I was pretty impressed. I don't think he'll have any problem with the verbal portion of the belt test with a bit of studying this week.

Plot Twist

The morning was fairly standard, although both kids were a little sluggish getting up and getting going. After getting them dressed and fed, I took Bud to school while M-lady took Buster.

Both kids had a good day at school. I got home a little early, around 5:00, so I could take a video call that would run from 5:15 to 5:45. It lasted a little long, and we said goodbye to Nanny J around 6:00.

Bud ripped through his homework, and we all had a quick snack before sitting down to watch the latest episode of Ninjago. Both kids were a little surprised when an unexpected character was revealed to be the prophesied 'Green Ninja', an identity which both kids have been speculating on all season. I had to field a number of questions from the kids, but I was once again impressed with the writing of the show.

Dinner went pretty well, and both kids ate (after a brief pouting episode by Bud). There wasn't a lot of time between dinner and snack, and the kids played while I washed dishes. Both kids enjoyed snack, and then got ready for bed. We did a joint story, and I tucked both kids in. M-lady arrived home a few minutes after we turned out the light, and was able to say goodnight to the kids before they fell asleep.

Delayed Shower

Buster came and jumped in bed with us at bat 7:00 this morning, but was fairly still until M-lady and I got up around 7:30. The morning routine was standard, and I took Bud to school around 8:15 while M-lady stayed with Buster until Nanny J arrived.

The kids had a good time at TKD. When I got home, Buster immediately let me know that he'd just had a bath. Bud deferred his bath, however.

After getting settled and saying goodbye to Nanny J, I got Bud a snack and got him started on his homework. He had a page of math problems that he blew throu without difficulty.

M-lady got home, and we had dinner around 7:00. The kids both ate pretty well. After dinner we all played around the piano a bit, had a quick snack, and then I finally convinced Bud to take his shower. We played with the iPad for a few minutes before turning out the light.

Long Weekend For One

Bud didn't have school today, so that made the morning fairly easy. Buster was a little reluctant to get up,but some coaxing eventually had him giggling while I was getting him dressed. M-lady watched Bud while I took Buster in to school, where we arrived as the door was opening.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I always look forward to the kids first words to me when I arrive home. Today, it was Buster letting me know that he'd had a bath, and then asking me to read a Lego comic to him.

Since Bud didn't have homework, we had a snack and then I played some video games with Buster while M-lady did some fun piano songs with Bud. We're going to pick up some Pirates and Harry Potter piano music for him to mess around with, too.

We had a late dinner, and snack time was a few minutes later. I played a little more with Buster on the iPad before died, and Buster fell asleep within a few minutes of turning out the lighter about 8:30.

Slow Morning, Just Hanging Out

M-lady and the kids got up to see Ama and Agu off this morning. M-lady came back to bed after getting some breakfast for the kids, but they stayed up and played. They spent time in the room with us, sword fighting, jumping on (us) the bed, and generally carrying on. We kicked them out a couple times.

I got up around 9:00 to watch a little TV with the kids. I got them a second breakfast around 10:30ish, and then managed to get back to bed for half an hour or so. I eventually got up around the time M-lady and Bud headed out to run some errands together. Buster and I loaded up as well after we'd gotten ready, and headed out to the grocery store. We had a good time, and got home to unload groceries. Buster was really excited about some erasers we'd picked up, and was anxious to try them out.

M-lady and Bud arrived home shortly, and Bud and I had some lunch. Buster snacked a little bit. After lunch, we continued to have a mellow afternoon. M-lady got some work done in the office, I got a few odd jobs done, and the kids played. Around 3:30 I set them up to play Lego Harry Potter on the Xbox, and that carried them for about an hour.

I set up the paper shredder in the late afternoon, and gave the kids a chance to shred some documents under close supervision. Bud thought it was cool for a few minutes, but Buster thought it was a bit too loud. The kids abandoned me to the shredding after a short time.

When the documents were disposed of, I started getting some dinner ready with Buster. We had a nice video chat with Grandma Nese and Granddad B, who called to congratulate Bud on his piano recital. Both kids interacted a bit, and Buster showed off the work he was doing in his workbook.

We had dinner a short time later, and both kids ended up eating pretty well, although it took Bud a bit of a restart. After dinner, I got the kids into the shower and cleaned up. After they were in PJs, it was snack time, and from there straight on to bed. I watched some trailers with Bud before bed, and he was excited to see the trailer for The Secret World of Arrietty, which is based on the book The Borrowers, which Bud is currently reading.

Graduation Recital

The kids were up at the usual time this morning, and M-lady and the Ama and Agu took care of them. M-lady managed to come back to bed for a while, and I happily slept until about 10:30. Buster jumped in bed with us for a while, and demanded an iPad for a bit. I was able to convince him to head downstairs for a snack around the time I rolled out of bed.

I headed out around 11:00 with Buster to run a few errands. Buster proclaimed that he was 'starving' around 11:30, so we stopped for lunch. Buster ate pretty well, and we headed off to continue our errands. We made it home again around 1:00.

M-lady and her folks headed out to meet Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C at a house that family is looking at, and I watched the kids at home for a bit. We had a good time playing, and Buster busied himself with the iPad again for a bit. When M-lady and her parent arrived home again, Cousin C and family came, too.

Buster and Cousin C got down to playing with each other, and Uncle C stayed behind to watch them while the rest of us loaded up and headed out to Bud's Suzuki Book 1 graduation recital. This was Bud's 6th or 7th performance, but his first graduation, so he got to play a bunch of songs rather than one or two. He did a great job, and delivered a solid performance.

After the recital ended, we headed home, where we dropped off Aunt O and Ama. The rest of us continued on to McDonald's, where we got Shamrock Shakes to celebrate Bud's performance. We all had them right before dinner.

After dinner, Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C took their leave, and we said goodbye. Buster was having fun building a little fort for himself, and it occurred to me to pull out the PlayHut tents. Buster thought they were fantastic, and played with them for the rest of the evening.

We watched a little TV before snack time, and the bedtime routine was pretty straightforward. The kids said their goodbyes to Ama and Agu, who will be heading home tomorrow morning. Buster fell asleep pretty quickly after the lights went out.

Working On Letters

The morning routine was straightforward, and Bud headed out with M-lady for school while I waited with Buster for Nanny J. Buster was excited to work in his workbook, and sat down to practice writing letters until Nanny J arrived and I headed out for work.

I arrived home around 5:30. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and I played with the kids for a few minutes before M-lady arrived home. She got Bud going on his homework, while I snoozed on the couch for a few minutes with Buster occasionally jumping on me.

We all had dinner together. Bud ate well, but Buster just sort of nibbled. After dinner, Bud did his piano practice, and Buster and I watched a Ninjago episode. Bud joined us before snack time.

Bedtime was usual, and I played Machinarium with Buster until turning out the light around 8:30.\

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

The kids were up early enough to have a pretty straightforward morning routine. M-lady took Buster to school this morning, and I dropped off Bud. It was raining, so he headed straight into the classroom rather than waiting outside, as is the norm.

I got home around 6:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. Buster was excited to show me something new: he'd written the alphabet on his magnetic doodle pad. It's the first time he's done that freehand, and he did a really good job. I was impressed. The E and F were overlapping, but other than that I think he got all the letters, and they were recognizable. He also doodled some 'Ninjago maps' and a couple of cards for M-lady and me.

I got Bud into the shower, and M-lady arrived home a short time later. When Bud got out of the shower, he tackled his homework, and then we all had some dinner together. Buster ate pretty well, and Bud ate a huge amount. After dinner it was piano, and then just enough time to watch the new Ninjago episode before snack and bed time.

Continuing to Advance

It still felt early this morning getting up around 7:30, but the kids didn't have too much trouble getting out of bed. Bud's rash was again greatly reduced, although still a little visible. Bud had some breakfast and headed off for school with M-lady, and I hung out with Buster until Nanny J arrived.

I met the kids and Nanny J at their TKD class at about 3:00. It was the first time I got to watch Buster in TKD class, and I thought he did pretty well. He noticed I was there partway through and gave me a bit smile.

Bud received his green belt during the class, which was why I was there. In the 'beginner' class, he now is very close to being the highest-ranked child. His movement has become very solid, and he is very disciplined and focused during class.

I took both kids home, where we met Nanny J. She got Buster bathed, although Bud refused, and I did some more work. At about 5:45, M-lady arrived home, and we said goodbye to Nanny J.

I set up Bud's email account on an iPad, and he spent some time typing out an email to his cousin. QWERTY keyboards are definitely hard to learn and hard to explain. While Bud was working on that, Buster played some Machinarium. We got working on dinner a short time later, and then Bud did his homework and piano practice.

I played more Machinarium with Buster while Bud was busy, and Buster actually decided to forgo his snack in order to play more. We had fun working on it more after he brushed his teeth, and we turned out the light around 8:20. He fell asleep a short time later.

Not So Spotted

Bud woke this morning with his rash reduced, if not gone entirely. Both kids were up within a few minutes of me opening their windows, and got dressed without too much prodding. M-lady helped Buster get dressed after she got off her morning phone call. I got the kids some breakfast, and then took Buster to school while M-lady took Bud, and explained to Bud's teacher about the non-contagious, non-dangerous rash.

M-lady met the kids at the dentist office, where Nanny J took them immediately after school. The kids had good checkups, and afterward they headed straight over to the doctor's office so Dr. H could take a look at Bud's rash. She concurred it wasn't dangerous, and we'll mostly just need to wait it out.

I got home around 5:45, and found Bud working on piano with M-lady. Buster was pretty excited, and I managed to keep him entertained while Bud practiced. After doing a little work on the computer, and playing a little bit of Machinarium, we headed downstairs to get dinner. Bud wrapped up his homework while I prepared dinner for the family, and both kids ate pretty well.

Snack time came up quickly, and after snack I got Bud into the bath to soak for a bit before bed. He was OK to go to sleep without any Caladryl tonight, so he's probably getting better. I gave him one of my old T-shirts to use as a nightshirt, rather than his very-tight-but-not-chemically-treated pajamas, and he was pretty excited about that. Both kids fell asleep in a reasonable time.

Surprise Rash

Bud woke this morning with very rosy cheeks and ears, but no fever. When he was getting dressed a bit later, we discovered that he had a rash all over his body. He had showed me a few spots on his legs a couple days ago, but that's all there were. Today, the spots were pretty much everywhere.

A bit of research turned up the probability that this was a not-too-uncommon amoxicillin rash, a side effect of the drug rather than an allergic reaction. He got a little itchy later in the day, so had a long bath soak and later some calamine lotion, but otherwise was generally OK.

I ran out in the morning for a quick errand, and then we pretty much laid low and reset clocks until Nanny J arrived around noon. At that point, M-lady, Bud, and I packed up and headed out to see the latest Cirque Du Soleil show, Totem. We had a great time at a great show. Bud really enjoyed it as well.

Buster had a good time while we were gone, and had played with Nanny J while we were gone. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and the kids played together for a bit while M-lady ran out to pick up a few things. When she got back I bathed the kids, and then got started on making dinner. The kids ate well, and after dinner we watched a little bit of TV before snack and bed time.

Buster was asleep around 8:00, so hopefully won't have too much trouble getting up tomorrow morning. Bud was itchy and took a while to fall asleep, but hopefully will have a lessened rash and be able to get up in the morning.

Lego for Everyone

The kids jumped in bed with us around 8:00, and M-lady got up with them after to bit to get them some breakfast. Bud was a little stubborn about piano practice, but eventually got it done. Buster came and played some Machinarium with me after he had breakfast.

Lunchtime came up pretty quickly, and I ate and got some lunch for Bud as well. After he'd finished up, he and I headed out to run some errands while M-lady and Buster were having lunch. They headed out to the library while we were gone. Bud and I ended our errands by going to the car wash, which offers free popcorn and lemonade, so Bud was pretty happy.

Bud played outside for a bit when we got home. Mid-afternoon, we all motivated and loaded into the car to head over to Toys-R-Us. We let Bud and Buster pick out birthday presents for each other (they picked the same Lego set), and M-lady decided to pick up one of the new 'Friends' Lego sets. Everyone was excited to get home to play with Lego, so that's where we headed.

We all sat down to play with the Lego, and everyone had a good time. Bud really wanted to help M-lady build her set, but she was able to fend him off and have him help look for pieces while she built the set. After she was done, Buster had a great time having ninjas and snake people come eat and cook at the cafe.

I put a quick dinner together, and the kids and M-lady watched a little TV after dinner. Snack time came up pretty quickly, and the snack and bedtime routines were standard. Bud and I watched the short film The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, which we both enjoyed, although I don't think we understood it all. It will take a little more thought.

Not So Sick

Bud was running a fever again this morning, so he stayed home from school. We got ready in the usual way, though, and I took Bud to drop Buster off at his school. We headed back home after that, and Bud kept himself entertained with an iPad while I worked.

M-lady and Nanny J with Buster arrived home around the same time, shortly before noon. It was nice to see M-lady, and the kids were excited to see her as well. After having her settle for a few minutes, I headed out to work.

Bud was apparently fine all afternoon, and M-lady was able to take him to his piano lesson, where he did very well. While M-lady and I chatted over dinner, the kids ran around yelling in the living room for about half an hour, clearly having excess energy. Bud ate well, and Buster again deferred his dinner.

We all sat together and watched some Cirque Du Soleil videos before snack time. Buster ate a passable dinner then, and we did a fairly straightforward bedtime routine. Buster was asleep a couple minutes after we turned out the light.

Another Spring Cold

Bud woke this morning complaining of a sore throat, and was running a low-grade fever when I checked him. Consequently, he stayed home today. Nanny J arrived at 8:45, and I headed off to work after making the appropriate calls to school.

I headed home in the early afternoon to swing by the school to pick up Bud's school/home work. The kids seemed to be doing fine when I got home, and Bud wasn't running a fever, but still had a sore throat, and his voice was going. Bud spent a good portion of the afternoon playing with an iPad and resting in his room. He did get through all his homework, too.

When I checked Bud's temperature again around 5:30, it had bumped up again. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and Bud ate dinner almost immediately, and quite a bit of it: he was pretty hungry. After eating (and me wrapping up some extra work), we sat down in front of the TV to watch The Sound of Music, which Bud had received for his birthday. We watched about half an hour's worth before taking a break so Bud could do his piano practice.

We had a nice, brief phone chat with M-lady right before snack time. The kids were excited to hear she'd be coming home tomorrow. Buster had deferred dinner until snack time, at which point he ate pretty sparingly. We headed straight to bed after that. Both kids were pretty good about getting ready for bed, and lights were out around 8:30.

Enjoying Their Company

Buster was a little slow to get up this morning, but Bud was pretty good. And I was able to roust Buster without too much effort. The kids took some reminding to keep them moving along in the morning process, but we all ended up getting out the door in time. We dropped Bud off first, and arrived just as they were opening the door at Buster's school.

The kids seem to have had a good afternoon. I arrived home a few minutes late, shortly before 6:00. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and the kids and I played for a bit. Bud was anxious to open his birthday gift from Grandma Nese and Granddad B, and so we set up a video call so they could see him open it. He was pretty happy with the two books, and before bed was about 50 pages into Pippi Longstocking.

After the call, Bud got started on his homework, and I got started prepping dinner for the kids. Buster was a bit slow to eat, but both eventually finished solid meals. After dinner, Bud did a quick piano practice, and then the three of us watched a new Ninjago episode.

M-lady called while we were watching TV, and the kids chatted with her for a few minutes before we said goodnight. After the show, we had snack time and bedtime. The kids were good about getting ready for bed, and I was able to tuck them in on time. Buster again fell asleep quickly, and Bud and I chatted for a few minutes before I left him at about 8:45.

A Full Evening

The morning was fairly straightforward. Both kids were up a few minutes before it was time to get up, and joined us in bed until the alarm went off at about 7:30. Bud was a little reluctant to get dressed and have breakfast, but was still ready to go in time. M-lady stayed home with Buster while I dropped off Bud. We said goodbye to M-lady, who was heading out mid-morning for a business trip which will see her away for the rest of the week.

I dropped Bud off without issue, and we noticed that it was chilly this morning... it stayed pretty chilly the whole day, a good 20 degrees cooler than two days ago, and windy to boot. Bud zipped up his jacket, but wasn't ready to get a bigger one.

I headed to work, and the kids had TKD in the afternoon. At my request, Bud completed his homework in the afternoon as well. I got home around 5:30, and found Bud ready to go to his TKD belt test. Buster got ready pretty quickly, and we headed out within a few minutes, saying goodbye to Nanny J.

We arrived a few minutes early, and Bud did a good job in his test. Buster kept occupied with an iPad, which drew a crowd of kids around him as well. He was good about sharing. When Bud finished up, it was past 7:00, so we loaded up in the car and grabbed some dinner on the way home.

We ate dinner when we got home, which led directly into snack. The kids ate well, and we got ready for bed from there. While brushing teeth, Bud indicated that his gums were swollen in the back of his mouth on one side. I took a look, and discovered that he had a new molar on the lower right side of his mouth. Not sure when that came in, but he's got six teeth on the right, now, and still five on the left. He was pretty excited to find out he had a new tooth. I'll need to check the top molars tomorrow.

The kids were in bed by 8:30, and Buster was asleep inside 10 minutes. Bud took a little longer to fall asleep, but dropped off shortly after 9:00.

Seven Years

Both kids were up early this morning, around 7:00. We wished Bud a Happy Birthday, and both kids crawled into bed with us for a while. We eventually all got up around 7:30.

We let Bud open one of his birthday gifts from us, and then got the kids some breakfast and ran the usual morning routine. Both kids were pretty good about getting ready, although Bud was a little slow occasionally as he examined his new toy. I was able to get Buster to school on time, and M-lady took Bud to school.

I got home at 5:45, and Bud let me know that he'd been searching for his other birthday gifts (unsuccessfully). The kids were having a good time playing with the balloons from Bud's party, batting them around the living room. We said goodbye (and Happy Birthday) to Nanny J, and then I got a video call going with Grandma W and Granddad B so they could watch Bud open his gift from them. Bud was really happy with that, and also showed them some of the other gifts that he'd gotten for his birthday.

We got started on dinner when M-lady got home, and I got Bud started on doing his homework. He did the entirety of his weekly spelling packet, so that will reduce the work he has to do for the rest of the week. We all had a solid dinner, and then Bud opened another gift from us, which he was really excited about. The kids played with that (a big Bakugan) up until snack time.

Snack time went relatively well, and the kids got ready for bed with minimal fuss. Buster and I read Richard Scarry stories before bed, which was lots of fun. Buster seemed pretty tired, and fell asleep within ten minutes of the lights going out.

Today also marks the six-year anniversary of the start of this blog. Wow!

Cold Show

I got up to help Buster get dressed this morning a little after 8:00, but was able to crawl back into bed. M-lady got up with the kids a short time later, and got them some breakfast, and got Bud started on his piano practice. Bud was again anxious today, this time to go to his Friend N's birthday party.

After I got up, I helped out with some small morning tasks, and then helped out with lunch for the kids. After eating a reasonable lunch, I packed up with Buster and we headed out to get groceries, while Bud and M-lady went out to run some quick errands. Buster was a good shopping companion, and we got the groceries taken care of pretty quickly.

We got back around 1:00, and Buster headed upstairs when we got home. He grabbed his blanky and octopus, and curled up on the fuzzy alpaca rug we have upstairs. He was asleep in just a few minutes.

M-lady and Bud got home a short time later, and Nanny J arrived at about 2:00. M-lady and I woke Buster up, and the three of us packed up and headed out to see Stars on Ice, while Bud stayed with Nanny J until it was time to go to the birthday party.

Buster was pretty excited about seeing the Stars on Ice show. We had great tickets, and after finding our seats, I headed back out to pick up some snacks. I think Buster found the popcorn and lemonade to be just about the best part of the experience. He did enjoy the lighting and music, and was really well behaved through the whole thing. He was a little squirmy during the second half, but made it through OK, and said he wanted to go again next year.

After the show, we headed back and arrived just in time to pick Bud up from the birthday party. It was another Harry Potter themed party, and he'd thoroughly enjoyed himself. Once loaded, we all picked up some dinner and headed home.

The kids ate reasonably well, and after dinner we watched a little TV. Snack time came up pretty quickly, and bedtime after that. I watched a short video with Bud before turning the light out around 8:30. Bud didn't fall asleep immediately, but was good about staying in bed.

Smaller Birthday Party

The kids jumped on us a bit before 8:00, and M-lady eventually got up to get Bud some breakfast. I got up a bit later to do the same for Buster. They were in and out of the room, and Bud was really excited for his birthday party later in the day.

M-lady and I eventually got up and got going, and made sure the kids were dressed. M-lady headed out to pick up groceries and necessaries for the party, and I headed outside with the kids to start packing up the car. The kids had a good time running around, and I got most of the basics packed.

We had some lunch when M-lady got home, and then rested a little bit before the party. Bud played Lego Harry Potter, and Buster had a bit of a meltdown before watching me play a game on the PC for a bit. Around 1:45 we kicked into gear again, loaded up, and headed over to the park.

We took our new wagon (which we'd purchased expressly for this purpose) and used it to ferry things over to the party site (a shady spot in the park on the grass). We got things set up, and kids started arriving for the party. Bud had only invited a handful of kids this year, and they we had about 5 of his friends ultimately show up.

The intention was to play Quidditch at the party, and I'd been pondering rules all week (including how to effect the snitch). We had purchased some pool noodles for brooms, and the kids spent a good chunk of the afternoon whacking each other with the noodles. We never really got a game of Quidditch going, but the kids had a great time.

They played some ball as well, but it was mostly 'tackle the kids with the ball'. I did get a small variant of 'three flies up' going for a bit, and the kids had fun with that. They also spent time playing tag, playing on the nearby playground equipment, and eating cupcakes. It was unfortunately too windy for candles, but we sang Happy Birthday to Bud anyways.

After a couple hours, the kids rolled out, and we packed up and came home. After unpacking and getting cleaned up, Bud opened his birthday gifts from the party. He and Buster had a good time putting Lego together, and then we rested again for a short time before dinner.

Dinner was straightforward, and both kids ate pretty well. After dinner, I worked with Bud on building one of the gifts he got, a snap-together plastic model. It's pretty complex, and I've been helping him trim the flashing and sprue burrs from the pieces. We only got a short way into the model before snack and bed time came up.

Buster and I watched a little bit of Ninjago on the iPad before bed. He passed out a couple minutes after I turned out the light, around 8:40.

Maybe Sick

When we got up this morning, Buster was coughing a bit, and running a low-grade fever. Scared of another incident of strep, we kept him home from school. M-lady stayed with him while I took Bud to school, and then a bit later she took him to the doctor to have a culture taken.

The quick strep test came back negative, but they dropped the sample off at the lab for a full test, and the doctor had Buster start on amoxicillin just in case. Nanny J arrived around lunchtime, and M-lady was able to head into the office.

M-lady and I arrived home around the same time, 5:45. Buster was feeling fine. After saying goodbye to Nanny J, both kids came with me to pick up some dinner while M-lady stayed home to settle in. We all ate together when the kids and I returned.

Bud did his piano practice after dinner, and then the kids and I played some video games before snack and bed time. Bud was wired in the late evening with the expectation of his birthday party tomorrow, and it took a little while to get him to sleep.

Gaming With Daddy

The morning was fairly straightforward, and Nanny J arrived in time for me to leave Buster with her while I took Bud to school.

M-lady arrived home a few minutes before I did, and she was still getting settled when I walked in. After dropping my things, Buster asked to play on the computer with me for a bit, while Bud did his homework. We played some Skyrim together at his bequest, mostly exploring and crafting.

We all had a fairly late dinner together, and then Bud did his piano practice with M-lady while I got Buster ready for bed. The kids were a little disappointed that we didn't get a new Ninjago episode this week, but we watched a little TV anyways before snack and bed time. Buster and I watched a little Ninjago on the iPad before turning out the light around 8:30.
