Grumpy In The Morning

I rolled out of bed around 7:30, and got Bud going a short time later. When I poked Buster, however, said, "I'm very tired."

Buster actively resisted getting ready for school, first as I tried to get him going, and them M-lady. M-lady even checked to see if he was sick. She let him go back to bed, and about 40 minutes later, he was downstairs, clamoring for breakfast, and anxious to get to school. I guess he just needs to get to bed a bit earlier. M-lady took him to school, where he ran off to play as soon as they arrived.

The kids seem to have had a good day. M-lady got home in time to take Bud to his piano lesson, and I arrived home a short time before they got back. M-lady wished Nanny J a pleasant weekend, and then we collapsed in bed for a few minutes with the kids playing nearby. M-lady eventually headed out to grab some dinner, and I broke up a minor squabble between the kids.

We had sushi for dinner, and the kids ate really well. It was pretty late by the time we finished, so the kids got into PJs, had a snack, and did the bedtime routine. I read a story, played a game, and watched a quick video with Buster, and he was asleep a few minutes after we turned out the light.

More Effort Than It's Worth

M-lady had to head for work early this morning. I got up a little early, so I was dressed and ready by the time the kids started getting up. Buster slept in a little bit, but managed to get breakfast before we loaded up to drop Bud off at school. The drop off was uneventful, and Buster and I headed home to meet Nanny J. I headed off for work when she arrived.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud did TKD, and both kids were happy and playing when I arrived home around 5:45. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and Bud got started on his homework. After he was done, the kids and I watched a little TV, and they got interested in a Science Channel special I recorded about anvil shooting. I had to explain what an anvil was, but both kids liked watching the explosions.

M-lady arrived home a bit later, and joined us to watch a little bit of the show. We got dinner ready a short time later. Both kids ate reasonably well. I got a hot dog for Buster at his request, and rather than just eat it, he spent most of the meal peeling it (and eating the skin). It sort of looked like the hard way to eat a hot dog, but he was persistent.

M-lady did piano with Bud after dinner, and I snoozed for a few minutes before bedtime. I then read stories and watched a couple videos with Bud before turning out the light. Bud didn't fall asleep until after 9:00.

Toothy Day

I got up early for an appointment with an oral surgeon, and headed out around 7:30. Bud was awake and reading in his bed, still in his pajamas. I got him to agree to be good about getting dressed and ready for school, and then headed out. M-lady did the morning routine with the kids, and Nanny J arrived to take Bud to school while M-lady took Buster.

I had a minor oral surgery, and came home around lunch time. I said a brief hello to Buster before spending most of the afternoon called into meetings. The kids were really good and didn't bother me all afternoon. I emerged from the home office around 5:30, and chatted with the kids a bit before we said goodbye to Nanny J. Bud and I talked about my surgery briefly, and he mentioned that he had a bump in his mouth. I looked and discovered he has a couple permanent teeth coming in. They've broken through just behind the lower two center baby teeth, which don't seem loose yet. Seems to be a common thing, though, and Bud's excited about graduating his teeth.

I got Bud started on his homework, and M-lady arrived home a short time later and did Bud's piano practice with him. She wasn't feeling very well, though, and retired while I got some dinner for Bud. Buster declined dinner, but apparently both kids had eaten huge breakfasts and lunches.

The kids and I played a little bit of Lego Pirates again before snack time, and then M-lady read a bit more Harry Potter with Bud while I watched a few minutes of video with Buster. Buster was pretty tired, and fell asleep almost immediately after we turned out the light.

Quick Tuesday

Buster woke once this morning around 6:00, and I was able to put him back to bed without any fuss. He got up for good around 7:00, and Bud was probably up around the same time. M-lady handled most of the kid prep this morning, and took Bud to school around 8:15. Buster ate an enormous breakfast, and then played with me a little bit before Nanny J arrived.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I arrived home around 5:45, and M-lady a few minutes after me, just as Nanny J was leaving. I headed out for a quick bike ride before it got dark, while Bud practiced his piano and did homework. I was back around 7:00, as the family was having some dinner. After I'd showered and eaten, the kids and I played a little bit of Lego Pirates of the Caribbean before we did snack and bed time.

Bud and I read some of the last Harry Potter book before bed. Bud seems to be really enjoying it, and will probably finish before the end of the week.

Starting the Last Book

Buster jumped into bed with us a little after 7:00 this morning, and was off and running again a few minutes later. M-lady and I got up and got going around 7:30, and had a fairly standard morning getting the kids dressed, fed, and ready for school. I took Bud, and M-lady took Buster to school.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home around 5:45, and Buster immediately showed me the picture he'd been drawing: Obi-Wan vs. Darth Maul. His drawings are just starting to show signs of recognizability, which is fun. Bud was busy writing some names down, and asked me how to spell the names of most of the main characters from Harry Potter.

Bud apparently finished the 6th Harry Potter book today, and started on the 7th. M-lady and I are discussing what we can get him started on reading next.

M-lady arrived home a few minutes after Nanny J left. We all spent a few minutes hanging out in our room, and then M-lady got started on piano practice with Bud while I napped a little bit. M-lady was kind enough to get dinner organized, which I joined around 7:00.

Both kids ate pretty well. Bud wrapped up his homework after dinner, and I played some Lego Pirates of the Caribbean with the kids before snack time. Buster eschewed snack time this evening, but Bud ate a big snack. I read some stories and played an iPad game with Buster before tucking him in at about 8:30. He was pretty tired, and fell asleep in a few minutes.

A Sunday Home

The kids were up fairly early, and M-lady and I were able to fend them off for a little while. M-lady eventually got up and got the kids some breakfast, and then came back to bed for a bit. She was very nice in letting me sleep in. The kids came to check on me now and again, but apparently I wasn't much fun. M-lady managed to get back to bed for a bit, too.

I got up some time after 10:00, and entertained the kids a bit by setting up wish lists for them on Amazon. We set up private wish lists, and they went to town on requesting Lego sets to put on the lists. I think they got all of them. In any case, we had a good time setting that up, and M-lady and I can pick items for Xmas and birthdays now.

I got some lunch together around noon, and the kids ate reasonably well. After lunch, I loaded my bike up and headed off to a bike shop to talk wheels. While I was out, Bud did his piano practice, and the kids and M-lady generally had a good time together. They were just finishing up a snack when I got back home mid-afternoon.

The weather was a bit threatening, but I decided to run out for a quick, 40 minute ride. When I got home and showered, we loaded up and headed out to get some dinner. The kids were well behaved at Red Robin, and ate pretty well. After dinner, we headed over to the grocery store and all did the shopping together. I think the kids had a pretty good time.

When we got home, there was enough time to play a little bit of Lego Pirates of the Caribbean before snack and bed time. The kids were good about getting into bed. Buster was pretty tired, and fell asleep quickly. Bud and I read some of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and we turned out the light a little before 9:00. Bud's probably going to be done with the HP series before the end of next week at this rate.

M-lady Returns

The kids were up around 7:00 this morning, and I got up and got breakfast for them before returning to bed. The kids seem to have entertained themselves for a while, and I got up shortly after 9:00 to get us all ready to head out the door. After slathering on some sunscreen, we loaded up and headed for Happy Hollow.

As soon as we got in the gates, Bud let me know that he needed to pee. Buster agreed that he needed to pee, too, so the bathroom was the first thing we saw in the park. From there we checked out the lower zoo, and had a good time seeing the animals. After visiting the lemurs and peccaries, we headed up to the playground area.

It wasn't too crowded, so I let the kids go on their own. I wasn't worried about Bud, but I kept an eye on Buster from the ground. Bud was good about checking in on him from time to time. Buster managed to negotiate everything, including the big slide, by himself. The only thing he wasn't interested in doing was the big rope net bridge. He did traverse several smaller ones, though.

After playing on the playground, we decided to walk around a little more. Buster indicated that he wanted to do one of the rides, so after watching it go around once, we got him strapped in. Bud elected to watch (and was probably a bit big for the ride, anyways). Buster remained stalwart, very serious, and never really looked like he was enjoying himself. He didn't scream like a couple of other kids on the ride, though, and afterward said that he had fun. So definitely a step of sorts. We checked out a few more rides before lunch, but the kids declined.

After getting some lunch, we visited the upper zoo briefly. The playground at the upper zoo was deserted, and the kids had a good time playing there for a bit before we packed it in and headed back to the car. We picked up Slurpees on the way home, and the kids drank them outside after we arrived home.

We played some Xbox together for a bit, and I napped a bit in the mid-afternoon. Buster fell asleep on the floor around 4:00, and M-lady arrived home shortly after 5:00. We were all excited to see her, and we all hung out together for a bit.

I got some dinner going a bit later, and everyone ate pretty well. After dinner, we bathed the kids. Bud showered himself successfully: I checked his hair for soap after shampooing, and he seemed to have rinsed it all out this time. Pretty soon he won't need any supervision at all in the shower. Buster got cleaned up with M-lady.

Snack and bedtime came up fast, and I did a video game with Buster while M-lady read stories with Bud. Both kids fell asleep pretty quickly once the lights got turned out around 8:30.

It's nice to have M-lady home.

Bud's Day Off

As Bud informed me last night, he didn't have school today. Both kids were up around 7:15, and I was up a short time later, I got Buster dressed and we all had some breakfast before taking Buster to school. Bud's old teacher said hello to him as we dropped Buster off, and then headed back home.

I worked from home in the morning (as Nanny J didn't arrive until after picking Buster up from school), and Bud spent the morning playing with Lego, reading Harry Potter, and hanging out with me in the office. Nanny J arrived with Buster around lunchtime, and Bud joined them as I headed out for work.

I got home a bit after 4:00, and Bud and I headed out to his piano lesson before 5:00. Bud did well in his lesson, and again demonstrated his remarkable ear and awareness of what he's doing. He was a little tired, though, and glazed over a couple of times.

We came home and relieved Nanny J, wishing her a good weekend as she took her leave. We all loaded into the car again and picked up a pizza for dinner, which took a little longer than it should have, but was ultimately successful. The kids ate well, and after dinner we watched some specials from the first Harry Potter movie before getting ready for bed.

The kids were good about getting ready for bed, and fell asleep quickly. Bud put a big dent into Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince today, getting nearly 200 pages into it. I've realized that I remember very little about the books, and will need to re-read them to be able to discuss them intelligently with Bud.

Surprise Schedule Change

Buster was up first this morning, around 7:00. He checked on me, and then headed back to his room to play for a bit. Bud was up a short time later, and spent some time reading in his room before getting dressed and joining me and Buster for breakfast.

Both kids ate well, and we dropped Bud off at school in plenty of time. I headed back home with Buster, where he read some stories to himself until Nanny J arrived a short time later. I headed off for work.

I got home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids and I played a little bit of Xbox before I got started on making dinner. Bud did some piano practice before dinner as well.

When I asked Bud about his homework over dinner, he informed me that he doesn't have school tomorrow for a teacher education day. I confirmed the surprising news, and changed my plans for tomorrow just a little bit. Bud's self-sufficient enough that I'll be able to work from home without really interrupting my schedule at all.

The kids (after a little negotiating) ate pretty well, and snack time came up quickly. Bud was good about getting himself ready for bed, and I read a quick story to Buster, put him to bed, watched a video with Bud, put him to bed, and then sat with Buster for a few minutes. Both kids fell asleep pretty quickly.

Daddy Day Off

This morning was exciting, as it was the first morning I was trying to deliver both kids to school by myself. At the same time. At different schools.

Both kids have school that starts at 8:30, and their schools are about 2 miles apart. I made sure we had lots of extra time this morning so we wouldn't be rushed/late. We had the opportunity to have a quick video chat with M-lady, which Buster really liked. Bud was too busy reading (and a little morning grumpy) to say Hello. After a quick chat, we had breakfast and got dressed, and then packed up to head to school. Both kids were good about getting ready.

I dropped Bud off at the curb, and the drop off went fine. As soon as I stopped, I opened the door for him and he grabbed his bag and hopped out. We had just enough time to make it to Buster's class, where the kids were just sitting down as we arrived. Buster put his things in his cubby, used the magic soap, and found his spot in the circle.

I had the night off. That is, we had Babysitter G come and take over for Nanny J at about 6:00, and I didn't get home until about 9:30, when the kids were already asleep. Babysitter G reported that the kids were fine, although neither wanted a snack later in the evening. She also reported that Bud finished his book (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire). I think he must have read about half the book today.

I enjoyed my evening off, but I look forward to hanging out with the kids again tomorrow.

Keepin' On

Buster was up around 7:00 today, and willing to entertain himself until I got up around 7:30. Bud was awake a short time later, and enjoyed reading more of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as long as I would let him. He got himself dressed in time, though, and both kids had breakfast. We headed out the door to drop Bud off at school in plenty of time.

Buster and I walked Bud to the door, waved goodbye, and left him hanging out with his classmates. He seemed fine. Buster and I headed back home, and Nanny J arrived a few minutes later.

I got home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. Bud had a good time at TKD today, and both kids seemed happy to see me. I did learn that Buster had decided that he didn't want to eat what I packed for lunch for him, but it doesn't seem to bother him too much.

Bud had already done most of his homework, and I checked it over for him. We played together a little bit, and watched a little TV before Bud did a piano practice and we had some dinner. The kids ate reasonably well, and Bud and Buster ran around a bit before snack and bed time.

Bud opted to read on his own at bedtime, so I read stories and watched a couple videos with Buster. After tucking Buster in, I tucked Bud in, and both kids were good about going to sleep.

Successful Day

Buster came in around 6:30 this morning, asking where M-lady was. I reminded him that she was travelling for the week, and he accepted that and went back to his room to play for a bit. He got me up again about half an hour later to help out with Lego. Around 7:30 I got up for good, and got the kids some breakfast.

The kids were pretty good about getting ready for school. I had just enough time to get myself together before Nanny J arrived around 8:15 to take Bud to school. I left with Buster a couple minutes later. We arrived just as the door was opened, and Buster was good about putting his stuff in his cubby, using the magic soap (hand sanitizer), and finding his spot in the circle. I waved at him as I left.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud was reading in his room, and Buster was drawing pictures with Nanny J when I arrived home. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and I did some drawings with Buster for a while before Bud came down and we caught up with each other a bit. Bud went ahead and did his homework, and we were all set to relax for a while.

We played a little bit of Lego Pirates before I got started on dinner. I got the kids to agree to a dinner plan, which worked out fairly well. The kids both ate pretty well, and we watched a little bit of MNF before snack time. Bud professes not to like football, but he seems engaged by the game, and is interested in learning the rules. I played a lot of touch football with the other kids on the street while I was growing up, and we don't really have that kind of community here, so I'm not sure the kids will develop the same interest in the game. Probably not a big loss.

Snack time was pretty quick, and the kids were good about getting ready for bed. Bud has generally been really good today, doing the things he needs to do without a lot of oversight. We read some stories together, watched a few videos, and I tucked the kids in. I checked on Buster about 5 minutes after tucking him in, and he was already passed out. I think he skipped his nap today. Bud fell asleep on his own a short time later.

Mellow Day For Guys

The kids were up fairly early, and jumped in bed with us several times. M-lady got up to get them some breakfast, and then climbed back into bed for a bit. By about 9:00, we were all up and moving.

M-lady had a plane to catch, and was picked up at 10:00. The boys and I said our goodbyes, and M-lady delivered books to the boys to help keep them entertained in her absence. Both kids stayed pretty busy with the books, on and off, during the day.

The kids and I read and chatted together for a bit in the morning, and eventually headed out to get lunch at Jamba Juice. Buster was again brave, and willing to go into the store. We picked up our juice and headed home.

The kids drank their smoothies pretty quickly, and both had to put jackets on. After lunch, we played a bit more, and spent a lot of time on Lego. I played with my Mindstorms set a bit as the kids played with their sets, and then we all spent time reading books again.
In the mid-afternoon, I let the kids watch an episode of Sesame Street, which they both enjoyed. The kids wanted to play Creationary after that, but I put them to work restoring the pieces in the game, as somewhere along the way one or both of the kids made off with some of the pieces. It was a it of a scavenger hunt. Bud and I managed to get all but a few of the pieces restored by combing his and Buster's Lego caches.

Buster wandered downstairs while I worked with Bud a bit, and I found him a short time later, asleep on the floor under the coffee table in the playroom. I let him sleep there, and Bud and I played a bit on the computer together.

I threw dinner together around 6:00. Buster had just woken from his nap, and ate pretty well. Bud ate a bit, but didn't really finish his dinner. After dinner, I got both kids bathed, and snack time came up pretty quickly. Bud complained of his tummy hurting briefly after snack, but he didn't seem too out of sorts. Hopefully he doesn't vomit during the night.

I read from Bud's Ninjago book to the kids for a bit, we watched a couple of videos, and then headed for bed. Buster was pretty good about staying in bed, only getting up once. He put himself back to bed on his own when I found him up, though.

A Bit Sick

Bud woke us about 4:00, this morning, having vomited in the bucket he asked for before he went to bed. I guess he really was having stomach issues. He almost entirely hit the bucket, so cleanup was pretty quick, and he apparently felt better after vomiting.

I had a bike ride in the morning which I left for at about 6:30, and M-lady was kind enough to watch the kids through the morning. They apparently started a little slow, but by mid-morning, were getting restless and agreed to run some errands with M-lady. They went on to run a whole bunch of errands, culminating in a trip to the car wash, where the kids got to snack on popcorn and lemonade.

Bud ate mostly bland food during the day, and had one more minor vomit, but had really perked up by afternoon. I got home around 2:30, and after getting myself cleaned up I played with the kids for a bit while M-lady ran out to run a few more errands. the kids and I watched a little TV and played some video games. Bud spent a good portion of the afternoon snacking, since he'd regained his appetite. He didn't seem to have any trouble keeping anything down.

Buster fell asleep around 5:00 on the couch, and woke once around 6:00 as I was about to start on dinner, but fell asleep again. M-lady arrived home around the same time, and I got dinner prepared. Buster was very hard to wake, but eventually woke up and had some dinner right before snack time. The kids had a quick snack, and we got ready for bed. Bud and I read some stories, watched a few videos, and turned out the light a bit after 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly. Hopefully tonight will be uneventful.

Possibly Sick

The morning was pretty standard, with me taking Buster to school. The kids were pretty good about getting ready, but Buster and I got out of the house a few minutes late, and were a couple minutes late for school. Not really a big deal with preschoolers, but I probably need to get up about 15 minutes earlier, and start getting him going a little earlier as well.

M-lady dropped Bud of at school, and apparently he started not feeling well sometime around mid-morning. M-lady got a call from the office at the school, where Bud was resting in the nurse's office, complaining of a stomach ache. I headed back to school to pick him up, and took him home. We arrived home around the same time Nanny J arrived with Buster.

Bud decided to skip lunch and just rest for a bit, and I headed back to work for some meetings. M-lady got home in time to take Bud to piano. She reported he seemed to be a little lethargic, save for when he was actually focusing on playing. They picked up dinner on the way home, and both kids ate well. I had to work a little late, and didn't make it home until about 7:00.

I had a bit of a snack with the kids, and we did the bedtime routine. Buster was pretty good about getting ready for bed, and the lights were out around 8:30. Buster didn't want me to sit with him, and went to sleep on his own.

Evening School Event

The kids were up fairly early again this morning, and M-lady did the initial fielding of the kids. They were dressed and ready to go around 7:45, and I got them some breakfast before 8:00. M-lady loaded up with Bud fairly early, and they headed off to school while I hung out with Buster.

M-lady took Bud to the door of his classroom, and then left him in line with the other kids. He seems to have made it in to class OK, so we should be able to transition to dropping him off in short order. I'll be taking both kids to school next week, and since their schools start at the same time, I'll need to drop Bud off in order to make sure I can get Buster to his preschool on time.

I got home right at 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. Buster had fallen asleep on the way to TKD again, so had had a solid nap during the day. He reportedly refused to take a bath during the day, though. Both kids were in good spirits, and we played for a few minutes before I got started on making dinner.

Unfortunately, I completely forgot about Bud's school's International Potluck this evening, and dinner was almost ready by the time M-lady got home and reminded me. We decided to eat dinner at home, and then headed to the tail end of the potluck. Bud has been excited about the book fair at his school all week, and this evening was the last chance before it closes.

The potluck was pretty much over when we arrived, but the kids were excited to check out the book fair. Each got a new book, although Bud had already gotten one earlier in the week. His second book will be saved for next week, when M-lady is gone.

We watched a little bit of the 5th grade talent show which was entertaining the potluck diners, and Bud looked for his friends for a few minutes before we headed back home. The kids played a bit before snack time, and then got ready for bed. I read a little bit with Bud, and then watched a couple of videos before we turned out the light. Bud then went to hang out with M-lady and Buster for a few minutes before heading back to bed.

Hopping At Night

The morning routine was fairly standard for our two-kid scenario. I got breakfast for the kids after they were up and dressed, and they were both ready to go to school in time. I took Bud to school, and M-lady took Buster. I've noticed fewer and fewer parents waiting with the first graders until the teacher opens the door: I think we'll try leaving Bud at the door tomorrow, and next week I'll probably be dropping him off at the curb.

Both kids seem to have had a good day at school I got home around 5:30, and Bud was anxious to talk about his day with me. M-lady arrived home a short time later, and we all had a pretty mellow evening together. Bud was good about doing his piano practice and homework, and I played with Buster a bit. The kids ate a good dinner, and I played a little bit of Rock Band with Buster before snack time. He's getting better at drumming.

The kids had lots of snack, and then we did bed time. They were pretty good about getting ready for bed, and I read a few stories to Buster, watched a few videos, and turned out the light shortly after 8:30. I sat with him in his room for a bit, and then went to the office to work on the computer. A little after 9:00, I heard Buster in the hall. He was holding his blanky, jumping on one foot, saying, "Hop, hop, hop..." I ushered him back to bed and sat with him a little longer. He drifted off to sleep before too long.

Happy to See Mommy

I was working late last night, and M-lady needed to head out to work early this morning. She was kind enough to make Bud's lunch, though. I got up, got Bud dressed and headed for breakfast, got myself dressed, and then rousted Buster. He was amenable to my dressing him, and we all loaded up to take Bud to school. The drop off went well, and Buster insisted on riding on my shoulders on the way back to the car. I complied, but warned him that he's getting awfully big to ride up there.

We got Buster some breakfast when we got home, and Nanny J arrived a couple minutes later. When I headed to work a few minutes later, Buster was playing with my Star Wars Monopoly set in the playroom, with Nanny J watching and playing along.

When I got home, Bud was at the top of the stairs in his robe with a wand, and Buster was playing Star Wars Monopoly in the playroom with Nanny J. He apparently didn't do that all day: They picked Bud up from school, went to TKD, and Buster even snoozed a bit. We said goodbye to Nanny J after I dropped my things, and played and watched a little TV together. I also spent a little time teaching Bud how to play draw poker, at his request.

M-lady arrived home before too long, and the kids were pretty happy to see her, after missing her last night and this morning. Bud did his piano practice after confirming that we'd be going to his book fair this week, and then flew through his homework. He'll be getting one page of homework a day from school, rather than a weekly packet as he did last year. He didn't have any trouble with the simple math problem set. We all had dinner after he finished up. Both kids ate pretty well. Buster started by spurning the food, but ended up eating a lot.

After dinner the kids and I played a little bit of Lego Pirate of the Caribbean for a few minutes before snack time. M-lady conducted most of snack, and we headed upstairs for bed. I got Buster into PJs, and then read some stories and watched a few videos with Bud.

Sometime around 9:30, M-lady came in to the office asking where Buster was. He wasn't in his room, and his blanky was in our room, but he wasn't there, either. We found him downstairs, playing with some playing cards. M-lady walked him back up to bed, where he fell asleep reasonably quickly.

Easier to Manage

M-lady had a big day at work today, and was heading off around the same time as the kids. I rolled the kids out of bed around 7:45, and got them some breakfast. They were pretty good about getting ready, and M-lady packed Bud's lunch, which helped out a lot. The kids were just about ready to go when Nanny J arrived at 8:15. Bud loaded up with her and headed off to school, and I packed Buster up into my car to take him to preschool.

The drop off went fine, and Buster found his seat without any issue. I had to head home to pick up his backpack (with a change of pants in it) that we'd forgotten to bring, and I snuck into class about ten minutes after they started to stick the backpack in Buster's cubby. Then I was off to work.

I got home around 5:45, and after dropping my things we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids reported that they'd had a good day, and I had Bud practice piano before we all settled in front of the TV to play some Xbox together. We kept at that until dinner time around 6:30.

The kids both ate well, and after dinner the ran around the living room for a bit. Eventually they came back to play a little more Xbox before snack time. They were good about getting ready for bed, and we all watched a couple of videos together. I was then able to tuck them both in and shuttle between the two a couple of times. They both were good about staying in bed, and fell asleep before too long.

Sunday, September 11, 2011

I was up to head off to a bike race before the kids got up, and out of the house around 8:00. M-lady handled the kids while I was off racing, and they apparently had a pretty good morning. Bud did his piano, and they all packed up to go to M-lady's afternoon rehearsal.

M-lady has an event for work tomorrow, and is acting as MC. They had tech rehearsal today, and she needed to be there before I was done with my race, so they headed over to the Computer History Museum. The kids had a picnic lunch, and were just pulling out their iPhones when I arrived shortly after 1:00. I said hello to M-lady, packed the kids up, and we picked up some lunch for me, snack for them as we headed home.

When we got home, we played some Xbox after I'd had a few minutes to get a shower. Bud has been excited to play Lego Pirates of the Caribbean since acquiring it yesterday, so I played a few levels with him. We took a break in the later afternoon, and had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese.

The kids had a snack, and then entertained themselves with their iPhones for a bit until M-lady arrived home and got started on making dinner. Bud ate a solid dinner, although Buster deferred. After dinner, Bud went ahead and showered himself (on M-lady's and my instructions). I went to check on him, and discovered he still had soap in his hair, and helped him rinse that out. He's close to being totally self-sufficient in showering, though.

I headed out a short time later to visit some friends, and M-lady conducted the final evening routine. The kids were apparently pretty good about snack and bed time, although Buster was up a couple of times. He fell asleep presently, though, and both kids were sleeping soundly by the time I got home.

The morning was again part of the new routine, where Buster also had to get ready for school. It went well, and M-lady got breakfast for the kids. I helped Buster get all set, and then loaded Bud up into my car and took him to school. M-lady dropped Buster off.

M-lady got home in the afternoon in time to take Bud to his piano lesson, which apparently went very well. Bud's doing a good job with his piano. I got home around 5:45, just as M-lady and Bud got back from the lesson. We all said goodbye to Nanny J, and then I headed out with Buster to pick up a pizza for dinner.

We all ate a solid dinner, and then the kids watched an episode of The Backyardigans with me. That brought us right to snack time, and bedtime. The kids were good about getting ready for bed. I read a lot of stories to Buster, and then turned out the light and let him fall asleep on his own. He did a pretty good job staying in his bed by himself.

Back To School Night

M-lady was up early for a call, and the kids were up before I was. Bud woke me around 7:45, asking for breakfast. I got both kids fed, and packed Bud's lunch before M-lady took him off to school. I played with Buster for a bit before Nanny J arrived, and then headed off to work.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud went to his first intermediate TKD class, which he enjoyed, but was disappointed that Friend D wasn't there as expected. I got home around 5:45, and the first thing Buster told me when I arrived was that he had refused to take his bath.

Bud hadn't bathed yet, either, and I eventually convinced him to take a shower, which he did on his own. I had no luck convincing Buster to get cleaned up. We were just starting on dinner when M-lady arrived home around 7:00.

Babysitter G arrived a short time later, as dinner was being finished. Buster got a bit upset, as he wasn't expecting Babysitter G, but was OK after M-lady explained that we needed to go to Bud's school to talk to his teacher and see his classroom. He was fine when we left a few minutes before 7:30.

Back to School night was fine, and we got the lowdown on Bud's general class procedures and how we fit into them. We got home around 8:30, and both kids were still awake. We said goodnight to Babysitter G, and I tried to get Buster to sleep. He didn't drop off until about 9:30, unfortunately. Hopefully that won't impact his school day tomorrow.

First Day of Preschool

The morning worked out well. We had to get both kids ready for school this morning, since it was Buster's first day. He was excited to go, though, so there wasn't any friction in the process. M-lady even got him into a polo shirt. At about 8:15, M-lady took Buster to school, and I took Bud. Buster apparently was just fine at drop off, and waved to M-lady before finding his rug and sitting down, waiting for class to start.

M-lady worked from home in the morning, and then was on hand to meet Nanny J when she picked Buster up from school. Buster was fine at pickup as well, and M-lady headed to work soon afterward.

I got home around 5:45, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. I asked Buster how school went, and he responded with "Good."
Bud and I watched the second half of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, and then got started on dinner as M-lady arrived home. Buster elected to watch a little bit of TV as the rest of us had some dinner, but joined us before too long. Bud did his piano practice after he finished, and snack time came up pretty quickly.

Both kids had a short snack, and then we did the bedtime routine. M-lady put Buster to bed, and managed to successfully extricate herself before Buster had fallen asleep. Meanwhile, Bud and I were playing "Wizard's Chess", which as M-lady described as Calvinball Chess, which involved no less than a checker board, Chinese Chess pieces, a deck of cards, and half a dozen plastic easter eggs.

I also took the opportunity to explain how real chess works, and how the pieces move, but he wasn't terribly interested in playing. We turned the light out around 8:45, and he fell asleep before too long.

Becoming a Big Boy

Buster jumped into bed with us this morning around 7:00, and I think M-lady has been missing snuggling with him in the evenings, so she let him stay. Around 7:45, we got started on the usual morning routine. Bud was good about getting up, getting dressed, and getting breakfast, a I took him to school without fuss. We arrived a couple minutes before the door opened, and he trotted in.

M-lady arrived home from work shortly after 5:00, and was able to settle in a bit. Since Buster starts preschool this week, Nanny J's hours have changed slightly, and she stayed until about 5:45. I wasn't able to get home until about 7:00. When I arrived, the family had already had dinner, and Bud had finished his piano practice and homework.

I had a quick bite, and then set up an episode of The Backyardigans for Buster. Bud and I stretched a little bit together (the one thing he seems a bit behind on at TKD is flexibility), and chatted. When the show finished up, we did the snack and bedtime routines.

Buster was pretty good about getting ready for bed. He was excited about going to preschool tomorrow, and we chatted about that a little. When we turned out the light, I sat with him for 5 minutes before asking him to stay in bed until he fell asleep, which he apparently did on his own. Tomorrow M-lady will have a go at putting him to bed and escaping.

Theatrical Version

I got up around 7:30 this morning, and rolled Bud out of bed a short time later. He got himself up and dressed before too long. I had to drop my car off at the dealership for some service, so I loaded the bike and took off a bit before 8:00. I was home again about 20 minutes later.

Bud got himself some breakfast, and Buster was up as well by the time I got home. I put on a video for them before snoozing next to M-lady for a little while. I jumped up a few times to help with the kids, and M-lady had a solid sleep-in.

I suited up for a bike ride before lunch, as M-lady was having breakfast with the kids. It was Bud's second breakfast, and Buster's first. Buster was a little sluggish today: he didn't seem to be running a fever, but was just a little bit lower energy than usual. I headed out a little before noon, with M-lady playing a dance game and Buster watching.

I had a good, quick ride, and was back around 1:00. The family hadn't had lunch yet, so we mostly ate together. Buster declined to eat at the time, though. After lunch, I got myself cleaned up, and Bud wrapped up his piano practice for the day. When I was presentable again, we all loaded into the car to run some errands together.

The kids were pretty good on the errands, and didn't have to go in to any of the stores. M-lady dashed into Old Navy, and I ran into a bike store. On the way home, we picked up Krispy Kreme doughnuts for a treat. Buster had fallen asleep on the way home, and slept on the couch for a bit after we arrived. The rest of us had some doughnuts.

Bud and I started watching the first Harry Potter movie together, and M-lady joined us for part of it. Bud really enjoyed the film, and it was fun to see the actors as kids again after having seen the last film recently. We took a break for dinner, which M-lady prepared. Buster declined to eat at the time, but joined us for a snack a bit later. After I'd gotten Bud bathed, we watched a little bit more of the movie before snack time.

At snack time, we finished up the doughnuts, and the bedtime routine was fairly standard. Buster was still awake when I turned out the light and left him, but he only got up twice, and neither time did he leave his room. He was asleep before too long. Hopefully he's not sick, and will be able to go to his first day of preschool this week.

Overcoming Fear of Jamba

M-lady was great about letting me sleep in this morning. I got up at one point to change Buster out of his diaper, but then headed back to bed to snooze until about 10:00. M-lady helped the kids get some breakfast, and then spent time this morning making a plush broom for Bud, who is rather taken with Quidditch.

Around lunchtime, I headed out to pick up some food. Buster elected to come with me, which was surprising since I was going to Jamba Juice, and in the past he has refused to go in due to the noise. I gave him the option of staying home, but he was adamant about joining me. We had a good time picking up lunch, and he was fine in the store. He covered his ears at first, but later acclimated a bit and seemed more at ease.

We all had a nice lunch when Buster and I returned home, and then spent a pretty mellow afternoon. M-lady finished a set of plush 'golden nunchucks', a la Lego Ninjago, for Buster, who had a great time pretending to be the blue ninja. A bit later in the afternoon M-lady and I were both able to nap for a bit.

When we roused ourselves, M-lady headed out to run some errands, and I took the boys to the grocery store with me. They were both well behaved, and we stocked up for the week as well as picking up supplies for dinner. When we got home, the kids played outside for a little while as I unloaded the groceries. M-lady arrived home after a short time, and the kids came in as well.

We had a nice video chat with Grandma W, and the kids said hello and showed off their new plush toys. After chatting, we got started on dinner. M-lady and I prepared french toast, and the kids gobbled up a huge quantity. After dinner we watched a little TV and played a little Xbox before snack and bed time.

Buster was still awake when I left him after sitting with him for about 10 minutes after turning out the light this evening, but he was good and stayed in bed until he fell asleep. He was pretty tired, though, so I don't think it took too long for him to doze off. Hopefully he'll start to be good about staying in bed on his own, though.

Science Academy

The kids were up around the usual time, and M-lady did the initial fielding. I got up around 8:30, and we got ourselves ready to head out for a new adventure. The kids were reluctant to actually get in the car, but with a bit of whining on their side and cajoling and ordering on ours, we loaded up to drive up to San Francisco.

Because it was a longish drive, the kids got to watch a movie in the new car. They were pretty excited about that, and Bud got to hold the remote. He did a good job with it.

We arrived a bit after 10:00, and found SF pretty cold and foggy. We put our sweatshirts on and walked over to the California Academy of Sciences, bought tickets, and headed in. Just inside the door was a T. Rex skeleton, which both the kids thought was pretty neat.

We had a good time wandering around the exhibits, and the kids were pretty excited. We saw the rainforest exhibit, which was really neat. They had made sure kids (with their lower sightlines) would generally still have a good view of things. We got some lunch a bit after noon, and both kids ate well.

After lunch, we checked out the aquarium and the snake/lizard exhibit before packing it in and heading home. The kids held up pretty well, but they were getting tired by the end. They did enjoy watching more of a movie on the way home.

When we got home, the kids had snacks, and M-lady and I rested a bit while they played. Bud finished reading the second Harry Potter book during the afternoon, and immediately got started on the third. Buster spent a good chunk of time playing games on the iPad.

I got up around 5:00, and headed outside with the kids. I did some work in the garage while they played, and then had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. The kids said hello, but they were pretty busy playing 'Clone Dropship' in the new minivan.

We headed in for dinner a bit later, which M-lady had prepared. Bud ate really well, but Buster only nibbled. After dinner, Bud did a solid piano rehearsal, and I watched a little bit of football with Buster. After getting Buster into PJs, the kids had their snacks, where Buster ate a fair amount. I put Buster to bed, watching a quick video before turning out the light a bit before 9:00. Buster was pretty tired, and fell asleep within 10 minutes.

Sleep Training

The kids got up this morning around 7:45, and the morning routine was just that. Bud had his breakfast first, and I made his lunch for him before he headed off to school with M-lady. Buster was just having breakfast when Nanny J arrived.

M-lady took the day off work today, and ran errands and had some off time in the morning and early afternoon. She picked Bud up from school, as well as Friend D so the two of them could have a play date. They had a great time playing together in the afternoon, and played well with Buster, too.

M-lady dropped Friend D off at his home on the way to Bud's piano lesson, which was unfortunately cancelled. Bud and M-lady arrived home right around the same time I did, at 5:15. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and settled in for the weekend.

The kids spent the early evening watching videos on my iPad. I headed out to pick up sushi for dinner, and neither child opted to come with me: they were having too much fun with the iPad. I got the food alone, and we all ate well when I returned.

After dinner, we watched a little bit of TV before snack time. Snack and bed time were fairly standard.

I'll be working on putting Buster to bed this weekend, as we'll be working on getting him to fall asleep without one of us in the room with him. He had a tendency to get up and come looking for us if we're not in the room with him. I explained to Buster that I would sit with him for a little while, and then head out, and that he needed to stay in bed and fall asleep by himself. He seemed OK with that, but it turned out not to be an issue as he fell asleep almost immediately after I turned the lights out. We'll see how the rest of the weekend goes.

Brief Parental Escape

Buster crawled into bed with us around 6:00 this morning, and I didn't quite have it enough together to take him back to his bed. I got up about 45 minutes later for a meeting, and M-lady was up around 7:30. She got the boys going, and I joined in around 8:00. Bud was ready to head to school in time with M-lady, and I hung out with Buster until Nanny J arrived around 8:45, then headed for work.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud had fun at TKD, as he's a new orange belt and is learning new material. Buster apparently got hungry later in the day, and had a monster snack right before I arrived home. He was polishing off a bagel when I walked in the door.

We said goodbye to Nanny J, and then watched the end of Kung Fu Panda together. Towards the end, I excused myself and got cleaned up and dressed for an evening out with M-lady. The movie wrapped up around 6:00, and I got dinner ready for the kids as M-lady arrived home, and Babysitter G arrived a few minutes later.

Buster wasn't super excited to see Babysitter G, but wasn't too put out, either. When both kids were eating dinner, and Bud had instructions to practice piano, M-lady and I headed out to dinner. We got home a bit after 9:00, and found Bud still up (although in bed). He fell asleep a short time later. The kids apparently had a good time during the evening, as reported by Babysitter G.
