Arrivals

Buster was up around 6:30, and was anxious to play. M-lady handled him, and was able to come back to bed now and then. Buster apparently had a 100% successful poop on the potty this morning, and he garnered a lot of praise for that. I got up around 7:30 and got Bud out of bed and going.

I took Bud to school around 8:30, and then headed home again. Buster was looking at pictures on the computer on M-lady's lap, and stayed there until Nanny J arrived a short time later. M-lady headed off to work before too long.

I took the day off work today, however I spent a good chunk of the morning dealing with email (rather than be totally buried when I head back to work on Thursday). I headed to the airport right around the time Nanny J and Buster brought Bud back from school.

I picked up Granddad B at the airport, and we got home around 1:30. The kids had their annual doctor's appointment today, so I loaded them up and met M-lady at the doctor's office while Granddad B waited at home.

The kids were good for their checkup. Both did a good job with height and weight checks. Bud had his blood pressure checked, but Buster didn't want the same procedure done to him, and put up a fuss, so we skipped that part. It ended up being the only issue during the whole appointment, though.

Bud was good through his examination, while Buster jumped around the room a bit. I finally settled Buster down by letting him play with my iPhone, which he twiddled with all during his examination. He was good through the whole thing. Both kids came away with clean bills of health, although we need to set up a precautionary specialist appointment for Buster.

I got the kids home a bit after 3:00, and Granddad B and I ran out to run some errands. A bit later in the afternoon, around 4:30 or so, Ama and Agu arrived.

Granddad B and I got home again at about 5:45, and were able to visit with the kids and Ama and Agu a bit more. It was nice to catch up a bit. Buster was happily playing with Agu's iPad, and Bud was having a fierce sword battle with Ama.

Granddad B and I left again to run a few more errands, and I dropped Granddad B off at a nearby hotel on the way home. I arrived home at bedtime, and was able to help by putting Buster to bed. We watched a couple of videos, and turned out the light around 8:45. Buster fell asleep a few minutes later.

Nanny J is on vacation for the next two weeks, so Ama and Agu will help out for a bit, and then Granddad B and Grandma Nese. It will be fun to have them around for a bit, and I know the kids will have a good time.

iPad Addiction

The kids were up this morning around 7:30, and I got up briefly to get some breakfast for Bud. I was able to head back to bed, though, and M-lady minded the kids until mid-morning. I got up as M-lady headed out to run some errands.

I played with the kids a bit, and we got some snacks and had a mellow time of it. Buster got hold of my iPad, so we played together with that for a while. I was able to close it down after a bit, and Buster and I had a brief video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Buster had fun chatting with them and seeing some pictures from their recent trip, and Bud was willing to say hello as well.

I made roll-up pancakes for the kids for lunch, which they did a pretty good job on. M-lady joined towards the end, having returned from her errands, and supplemented the kids meal.

After lunch, I headed out briefly to Home Depot, but couldn't convince either child to come with me. When I got home, I found both kids playing games and watching videos on my iPad.

M-lady and I each managed brief naps in the afternoon. While I was napping, M-lady put dinner together. When dinner was ready, I tried to wrest the iPad away from the kids, but that proved to be difficult. Buster threw a tantrum, and I sent him to his room. Bud got mad at me in a slightly less definite way, and headed to his room of his own accord. M-lady and I sat down to dinner alone for a while.

Eventually Bud came down, followed by Buster a bit later. Buster refused to eat, however. After dinner, the kids played Lego together for a few minutes before I got them into the shower, and we did a fairly standard snack and bedtime routine. Buster was pretty tired, so fell asleep quickly once we got the light out around 8:45.

Me and The Kids

M-lady got up with the kids this morning, which was nice. She woke me at about 8:30, as she was heading into the office to get some work done. Buster was up, dressed, and breakfasted, and Bud was up. I talked Bud into getting dressed, and we went downstairs and got some breakfast.

The kids and I played a bit during the morning and figured out what we were going to do. I suggested a kite park, but Bud wasn't interested. We ended up heading out to the local park and playground a bit before lunchtime. Both kids were good about getting sunscreened before we headed out.

The kids had a good time walking to and playing at the park. Bud enjoyed the monkey bars, and Buster had a good time climbing everything else. I helped Buster slide down the fireman's pole a number of times. Both kids tried the swings, but didn't spend a long time on them.

We headed back after an hour or so, and got home near 1:00. Bud had suggested a sandwich shop for lunch, which I had agreed to, but Buster wanted something simple at home. So I prepared lunch for Buster, which he ate, and we all headed out to the car to pick up lunch for Bud and me.

We got home, and Bud ate his whole sandwich as well as some of mine. He's starting to outgrow kids meals, apparently. After lunch we chilled out for a bit and watched a little bit of TV.

I had planned to run some errands in the afternoon with the kids, but Buster fell asleep sitting in the chair next to me as I worked on the computer briefly. I took him to his room, where he napped for about two hours.

While he was sleeping, Bud and I played with the Mindstorms set for a bit, and then Bud played outside for a while. Bud came in complaining of a scraped knee around the same time Buster was waking up. I helped Bud tend to his knee, finished rousing Buster, and got started on making dinner.

M-lady arrived home shortly before dinner was ready, and we all ate together. After dinner, Bud put in a solid piano practice, and we did a fairly standard evening snack and bedtime routine. I read a couple of stories to Bud, we watched a video, and turn the light out around 8:40.

Buster took a bit longer to fall asleep, and I sat with him in his room until he dropped off around 9:30 or so.

Fountain Diving

Buster wandered in around 4:00, and I was able to put him back to bed. I had a big bike ride today, so I got up at 5:00, and Buster wandered in around the same time. I put him in a dry diaper, and he crawled into bed with M-lady as I headed out the door.

M-lady was kind enough to take care of the kids today. They apparently had a good morning, and headed off to Stanford in the late morning. They headed to Maples to see a TKD tournament that was going on, figuring Bud at least would be interested. The kids lasted about 10 minutes before they were ready to go.

They wandered around campus a little bit, and eventually ended up at the Claw before lunchtime. They were just about to leave when Buster fell into the fountain. M-lady quickly fished him out, and he seemed none the worse for wear save being soaking wet. M-lady did some clothes shuffling, and they headed back to the car where M-lady had conveniently stored emergency dry clothes.

They came home, showered to warm up, and had some lunch. The afternoon was apparently fairly mellow. They had just headed for the library when I arrived home around 3:30.

They got back from the library after I'd had a chance to shower and clean up. I hung out with the kids for a bit, and eventually I headed out to pick up some dinner. The kids ate fairly well, and after dinner Bud did a solid piano practice. There was a little bit of Xbox before snack time, where I offered the kids a treat from the bike ride today: and 'energy waffle', which was really a glorified cookie. The kids loved it.

After snack, I got Buster into PJs and we read some stories, watched a few videos, and turned out the light a little after 8:30. He was a little restless at first, but ended up falling asleep pretty quickly around 9:00ish.

Buster didn't show any lingering ill effects from his fountain plunge. He didn't seem scared, and M-lady had to caution him to not run on the ledges at the library (as usual). We'll see if he gives fountains a wider berth going forward, but I don't really expect him to.

Pirate Ship

Bud was up around 6:30 this morning, and managed to keep to himself until a bit after 7:00. He was dressed when he asked me to get him some breakfast around 7:15, which I was able to defer until about 7:30. Needless to say, he was ready for school in plenty of time.

Buster was up shortly after 7:30, and I hung out with him after M-lady took Bud off to school. We had a pretty good time hanging out in his room before Nanny J arrived. He headed down for breakfast when she came in.

I worked from home in the morning. Buster headed out with Nanny J mid-morning for his soccer class, and I headed off to work before they returned home.

M-lady arrived home in time to relieve Nanny J, and I was stuck in traffic for a bit after running a quick errand. When I arrived home around 6:30, the family was just finishing up dinner. I ate while the kids played in the living room.

They had pushed furniture and toys together to create a fairly significant pirate ship. Buster would stand on a chair in the back and pretend to steer it, and Bud climbed the slide to man the crow's nest. They had a great time with their makeshift playground.

Bud did a quick piano practice when I finished up dinner, and then we played on the Xbox for a few minutes before having a snack and doing the bedtime routine. Bud was good about getting ready for bed, and since he doesn't have school tomorrow, we stayed up a little late watching videos. We turned the light out around 9:00, and he was asleep soon after.

Wednesday, May 25, 2011

Evening Outside

Buster wandered in around 7:35 again. Bud was already up, and didn't take much prodding to get dressed and have breakfast. He was pretty much ready to go to school by about 8:00. I got Buster dressed before taking Bud to school.

The kids had a good day. Buster apparently went all day without a diaper and without an accident. Go Buster!

I arrived home just at 5:15, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. We played around a little bit, and Buster was having a good time playing in his room. I eventually coaxed both kids to play outside with me, since it was a beautiful evening and I was interested in getting out rather than sitting in front of the TV.

The kids played while I did a little work in the garage. Buster did have an accident while playing outside, but he was kind of far away from the potty. We got him cleaned up and he headed back out. M-lady arrived home before too long, and I took a break to play with the kids for a bit as well. Bud headed inside when M-lady called dinnertime, but Buster wanted to stay out. We eventually headed in a bit after 7:00.

Buster skipped dinner the first time around. Bud ate well, and after dinner rested for a few minutes before starting on piano practice. I helped Buster with his dinner while Bud was practicing.

That brought us right up to snack time and bed time. Buster and I had a good time reading stories and watching videos before turning out the light around 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Sandwich Request

The morning routine was pretty standard. Our alarm went off around 7:30, and a few minutes later Buster trotted in and jumped on the bed. I got up and got Bud moving, and M-lady took him to school after he'd gotten dressed and had breakfast. I managed to get Buster dressed, and he was just heading downstairs to get breakfast when Nanny J arrived.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home around 5:00, and the kids were having a snack. That didn't keep them from wanting more snack when I got a few peanuts for myself after we said goodbye to Nanny J.

We spent most of the next hour running around, wrestling, and playing together around the house. We eventually settled in front of the TV, where we watched a little bit of a couple of shows before playing on the Xbox for a little while.

M-lady arrived home around 7:00, and got dinner started. Bud ate a solid dinner, but Buster requested a sandwich. M-lady made it for him, and asked if he wanted it cut into squares or rectangles. Buster requested circles.

After some back-and-forth, M-lady eventually cut a circle out of the middle of Buster's sandwich. This was apparently not what he wanted, and he staged a bit of a protest.

After dinner, we played a little more Xbox before having a quick snack (which Buster participated in) and doing the bedtime routine. I read a few books and watched a video with Bud before we turned the light out around 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Calisthenics

Buster wandered in this morning shortly after 7:30, and climbed onto the bed. I got up and got Bud going on getting dressed, and we started a pretty standard morning routine. Bud was ready to go when M-lady took him off to school, and I hung out with Buster until Nanny J arrived. I headed off to work soon after.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster continues to do well on the potty, and Bud continues to spend lots of time reading and playing with Lego. Bud had TKD today, and Buster apparently fell asleep in the car on the way to the class. He was able to snooze in the car with Nanny J while Bud took his class.

I got home a bit after 5:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J and played a bit. Bud was anxious to play Bakugan with me, but I'm not convinced he's got a good handle on how it's supposed to be played. We ended up running around a bit.

Bud and I did have some fun doing standing broad jumps in the living room. He learned to swing his arms with the jump, and is covering a pretty good distance. Buster got a few good jumps in, too.

We eventually headed to the TV to play a little bit of Xbox before dinner time. The kids played while M-lady and I prepared dinner, and Bud was good about shutting it off at dinner time. Buster had a minor protest issue around dinner, and headed to his room for a short time while the rest of us ate. He joined us again before we finished, and ate a reasonable dinner.

After dinner, Bud did a good piano practice, and then the kids played a little more Xbox before snack time. I did the bedtime routine with Buster, who was good about getting ready for bed. We read his planet/space books again, which have been his favorites for the past few days. After watching a couple of short videos, we turned out the light around 8:30. He took about an hour to fall asleep.

Jamba Fear

The kids were up around 8:00ish this morning, and M-lady was sweet and let me sleep in a bit. She got them breakfast, had a video chat with Ama and Agu, and Bud practiced piano a bit later. I rolled out of bed a bit after 10:00 to join them.

Buster had some success with the potty this morning. M-lady had an event to attend in the early afternoon, so the kids and I played a bit, and then headed off to Jamba Juice to get some lunch.

When we arrived, Buster refused to go in. Apparently the noise of the blenders scares him, which is totally understandable. So we skipped Jamba, got groceries, (where the kids were well behaved), and headed for home. We got lunch when we got home, and the kids ate pretty well.

After lunch, we had a quick video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B, and then the kids headed out front to play. I joined them a short time later, and had a good time playing outside with them. They were playing Clone Troopers, and at Bud's requests I reconstituted some old moving boxes that they could use as cover from battle droids.

We headed in a bit later, and had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Both kids chatted with them for a bit. M-lady arrived home as we were chatting as well. After the chat, I got started on dinner, which I prepared on the grill.

The kids watched a little bit of TV as the food cooked, and then we all sat down to dinner together. After dinner, Bud finished up his piano practice for the day. He's doing quite well, getting to the point of playing different things with each hand. It does take a lot of practice, though.

I showered the kids, and we did a fairly standard snack and bedtime routine. Bud and I read stories and watched a video, and turned the light out around 8:30. He was asleep a short time later.

Party and Late Nap

The kids were up around 8:00ish, and willing to entertain themselves for a little while. I got up with them around 8:30 to get them some breakfast and hang out with them. After breakfast, we played Monopoly for a long time before turning on the TV for a little while.

M-lady got up a bit later, and headed out to run some errands. The kids and I played a little bit more, and were just having some lunch when M-lady returned home. We packed up as quickly as we could, and headed out to a cast reunion and video-watching party in San Mateo.

The kids were apparently very well behaved at the party. I spent just a few minutes before getting on my bike, which I'd brought along, and riding off to a wedding reception (very casual) that I'd been invited to.

M-lady commented that even though the host of the party had quite a number of fragile items within easy reach, Buster was really good, and she didn't feel like she had to chase him around all the time. She enjoyed getting to chat with friends. Bud found a corner to read, and kept to himself for most of the event. Buster was much more interactive.

Buster fell asleep on the drive home, and napped until about 7:00. They had a quick meal when he woke, and then came to pick me up. I was attempting to ride home, but ran out of daylight before I made it.

We got home around 8:30, and did a quick snack and headed for bed. Even so, Buster an I didn't turn out the light until about 9:30, and he wasn't asleep when I got up to get a shower at about 10:00. M-lady sat with him for a bit before he finally passed out, probably sometime after 10:30.

More Boardgaming

The kids were up this morning a little bit before M-lady and I got up, and bounced into the room around 7:20. Bud had a 'Walk-a-thon' event today, and consequently went to school with the group that normally goes later, from about 10:00 to 2:00. So there was no pressure for him to get ready, and we were all taking it easy. Around 8:15 or so, I headed off to work, leaving M-lady with the kids. They apparently had a good time until Nanny J arrived.

They seem to have had a good day. Buster continued to have sniffles, but no other illness symptoms. Bud had a good time doing his walk-a-thon, though I didn't get a straight answer from him about how many laps he did. M-lady arrived home in time to take him to his piano lesson, which was double-length today, as he'll miss next Friday.

Buster was reading stories with Nanny J when I arrived home, and after dropping my things we said goodbye to her and read a few stories together. He agreed with me that we should get a pizza for dinner, so we ordered it together and headed out to pick it up. We got home with the food a few minutes before M-lady and Bud arrived.

We all had a nice dinner together. Afterward, I set up a game of Monopoly with Bud. When snack time rolled around, we decided to leave the game out and try to finish it tomorrow. The kids had a quick snack, and we started the bedtime routine. Bud was pretty happy that I was available to put him to bed for the first time in a while. The kids went to sleep without much trouble.

Buster was good about peeing on the potty this evening, and even took his diaper off himself at one point to pee on the potty. He had an accident right before bed, but was standing in front of the potty at the time: he was clearly making the effort, but ran out of time. All in all, we've been very pleased with his progress.

Buster woke once requesting that we wipe his nose, and had just the beginnings of a croup-y sounding cough, so we gave him a dose of medicine before putting him back to bed.

Open House Again

Bud was up briefly early this morning, but went back to sleep pretty quickly. I rolled him out of bed around 7:45, and he was good about getting ready for school and getting some breakfast. M-lady took him to school in plenty of time.

Buster was up a short time later, and he and I hung out before he got some breakfast. Nanny J arrived while he was eating, and the cleaners arrived a short time later. I headed off to work.

The kids seem to have had a good day, although Buster didn't do as well with the potty. Bud had TKD during the day, where he had a good time. I got home around 5:00, and both kids were playing together pretty well.

We said goodbye to Nanny J, and M-lady arrived home a short time later. M-lady packed up some snacks, and we all loaded into the car and headed over to Bud's school's open house.

Bud showed us around his classroom a little bit, and then headed out to the playground to play with his friends. Buster had a good time playing out there, too. We headed over to the book sale next, and each child picked out a book. Bud got a novelization of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and Buster picked out a trains book. We headed back by Bud's room one more time before heading home.

I had a quick dinner and headed off to work. Buster was hungry, and both kids apparently ate pretty well at dinner time, and ate huge snacks a short time later. They went to bed without any reported problems.

Buster had a bit of a runny nose during the day, and woke up once during the evening. He'd been lying on his back, and I think was having some problems with post-nasal drip. I got him rolled onto his side, and he went quickly back to sleep. Hopefully he'll be better tomorrow.

Curious Head Injury

Buster woke this morning a bit before 6:00, and wasn't interested in going back to his room. I eventually took him back there, and he wailed for a bit. So I took him downstairs to see if he was hungry or he wanted to play. We eventually headed back to his room where he quieted down and went back to sleep, with me sleeping on his couch for a bit.

Bud was up pretty early, playing with his Lego before it was time to get dressed and get some breakfast. He was pretty good about getting dressed once I got him going, and he and Buster had breakfast together. They were done by about 8:00, and I loaded both kids up to drop Bud off at school at about 8:15.

The dropoff went fine, and I headed back home with Buster. We played together for a few minutes before Nanny J arrived home.

I got a call from Bud's school shortly after 10:00. Bud had apparently bumped his head, had a small cut, and was bleeding a little bit. They asked if I could bring in a clean shirt for him. I grabbed one and headed off to school to see how he was.

His story was that he bumped his head on a wall. He had a small cut on the back of his head, which had bled a bit. He seemed fine, though, so I helped him change into his new shirt and escorted him back to class.

Buster apparently did a great job with using the potty today. He even got himself to the bathroom, pooped on his little potty, emptied into the big potty, flushed, and then called Nanny J for help with wiping. He's clearly interested in being independent. Bud had a play date at Friend D's house in the afternoon, which he reported was a good time.

I got home around 5:00, and Bud let me know that his head was still hurting, all while running around and turning cartwheels. We chatted and played a bit, and said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids joined me while I watched the end of Stage 4 of the Tour of California, and then I set them up to play on the Xbox for a bit while I called in to a meeting.

M-lady arrived home as I was getting off the meeting, and she got dinner together while I played with the kids a little more. The kids ate a solid dinner, and Bud did a good piano practice after dinner. I did some TKD with Bud for a bit before it was snack time and I had to head upstairs to get ready for my evening meeting.

M-lady put the kids to bed again, and they went to sleep pretty quickly.

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

Slightly Short Evening

Buster was up for unknown reasons a couple times during the night. Once at 4:30, and once apparently around 6:30. M-lady saw him back to bed, and stayed with him for a bit after 6:30. Bud was up playing with Lego when I checked on him around 7:40, and I got him moving to get dressed and get some breakfast. He was ready to go to school shortly after 8:00, and M-lady took him a few minutes later.

Buster was up before they left, but more interested in playing with his Lego than getting dressed or getting breakfast. We hung out together in his room until Nanny J arrived. I headed off for work soon afterward.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster did well with going to the potty during the day. We said goodbye to Nanny J shortly after I got home, and all had a quick snack together. After a bit, we made our way to the TV to play a little bit of Xbox.

The kids and I played Xbox until M-lady arrived home and got dinner together. She was very nice about preparing dinner, and Bud and I ate well. Buster deferred his dinner. After dinner Bud did a solid piano practice, and we had time to play a little more Xbox before snack time, since Bud is done with homework for the year.

I had to call into a meeting at 8:00, so M-lady was good enough to put the kids to bed. It apparently went OK, and the kids were all sleeping quietly when I got out of my meeting.

More Monopoly

M-lady and I rolled out of bed around 7:30, and I went to check on Bud. He was already up and reading, and I got him motivated to get dressed and get some breakfast. He was pretty much ready to head for school by about 8:00.

M-lady took Bud to school, and then returned to finish getting ready for the day. Buster woke a short time later, and was playing around M-lady as she got ready. Nanny J arrived, and M-lady took off a short time later.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster continues to do pretty well with his potty training, although he still occasionally gets distracted and has an accident. Bud had TKD today, and Buster skipped his nap.

I got home shortly after 5:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids helped me pick up the playroom a little bit, and then we sat down and played some Xbox together. I took a short time out for a call into a work meeting, and M-lady arrived home around that time.

M-lady got some dinner ready, and we all ate around 7:00. Bud did a quick piano practice after dinner, and I got Buster into PJs. After his practice, Bud asked to play Monopoly again, this time using the Star Wars Monopoly set that I have. We only played a few turns, since it was getting late, but the kids seem to have a good time.

The kids had their snack while I cleaned up the game, and I read stories and watched videos with Bud before we turned the light out around 8:30. He was asleep by about 9:00.

Intro To Monopoly

M-lady handled the kids this morning, and let me sleep in until about 10:00, which was really nice. I rolled out of bed and helped out with the kids a bit. The kids apparently had a couple of breakfasts, and were interested in finding brooms they could ride on to play Quiddich.

We had a good video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Buster in particular had a good time showing off his stuffed animals, and later Bud chatted a bit as well. Bud spent most of his free time today reading the second book in the Harry Potter series, Chamber of Secrets.

I got started on lunch as noon approached. I grilled some corn while the kids watched a little TV and Bud did his piano practice. The kids enjoyed the corn, and afterward M-lady headed out to run an errand.

Bud asked several times over the weekend about Monopoly, and it seemed like a good idea to pull it down at his request this afternoon. We stepped through the process, and the math practice of dealing with the money was clearly really good for him. He seemed to enjoy the basic game, and we had a good time. Buster played as well, taking his turn to roll the dice and move his piece back and forth (he didn't otherwise interact in the game). Bud did end up winning the game, as I had to concede after a remarkably unlucky streak.

We wrapped up the game and were all having a snack when M-lady arrived home. I chatted with her a bit, and then got started on prep for the class I was teaching in the evening. Bud and M-lady talked about making Griffyndor robes for him as well.

They had a good video chat with Ama and Agu, and played in Buster's room a bit. Buster did a great job overall with the potty today, and ran himself to the bathroom a number of times. He did have one accident on his couch, which I helped wash out. M-lady kept the kids entertained, though, and I was able to get the prep work done that I needed.

M-lady put dinner together, and we all ate fairly early this evening. After dinner, I got the kids into the shower and cleaned up, and they were in PJs a short time later. Bud was reading, and Buster was looking at pictures with M-lady on the computer when I headed for work around 7:00.

They apparently had a fairly uneventful evening, and the kids went to sleep without too much trouble. I'm going to be working evenings for most of this week, unfortunately, and M-lady has been really great in agreeing to put the kids to bed each night.

Bookworm

The kids were wonderful and let us sleep in until around 9:00. Buster came in and asked for breakfast at that point. Bud was already up and reading more of Harry Potter, but got dressed and joined Buster and me for breakfast.

After eating, we watched a little bit of TV. M-lady came down a bit later, and I snoozed for a few minutes while the kids got a snack. Buster was good about peeing on the potty this morning, and kept his shorts dry the whole time, making a couple of trips on his own.

Around 11:30 we split up. I took Bud and headed out to run a few errands, and M-lady took Buster. Bud and I picked up lunch at Jamba Juice at our last stop, and we arrived home around the same time as M-lady and Buster. We all had our juice together for lunch.

After lunch I played on the computer with Buster for a little while, and then played with Mindstorms with both the kids. We had a good time making a robot that shoots little balls. It was a bit of a challenge to keep track of all the ammo, but we had a good time.

Around 3:30 I set the kids up to watch an episode of Sesame Street, and M-lady and I rested for a little while. She eventually headed out to do some shopping. When the show was over, the kids and I headed outside to play for a while. I played with the kids a bit, and got some cleanup work done in the garage as well.

M-lady arrived home again at about 5:30, and the kids and I came in around 6:00. I got dinner ready for the kids around 6:30, and Babysitter G arrived around 7:00. Bud was happily reading in his room, and M-lady got Buster into PJs. Buster was pretty happy playing in his room as well, and apparently played with Babysitter G for the evening before bedtime.

M-lady and I arrived home later. Bud is apparently about 20 pages from finishing Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone after two days of reading. He seems to understand a fair bit of it, although he has trouble pronouncing some of the names. I look forward to chatting about it with him tomorrow, although I need to re-read the book.

Reading Lots

I rolled Bud out of bed around 7:45, and got breakfast for him. M-lady took Bud to school, and I stayed with Buster, who didn't wake until after 8:00. Buster was was having a big breakfast when Nanny J arrived. I rode my bike to work, heading out a few minutes later.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster had continued success with potty training, and pooped on the potty today.

Bud apparently grabbed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone off the shelf today and started reading it. He got 135 pages in! M-lady and I chatted with him about it a little bit, and his comprehension seems pretty good.

M-lady took Bud to piano in the evening, and I got home a few minutes before Nanny J was due to leave. I just had time to change out of my biking gear before we said goodbye. Buster and I had a good time playing cars for a little while, and then turned on The Wiggles on TV.

M-lady and Bud arrived home shortly, after Bud had a good piano lesson, and joined Buster and me in front of the TV. I made some dinner, and we all ate around 7:00.

The kids and I spent some time on the computer before snack time. Buster peed on the potty twice by himself during the evening, and M-lady and I continue to lavish him with praise when he makes it in time. I hung out with Bud a bit at bedtime, and we had fun reading and chatting and watching a few videos before turning out the light.

Efficient Evening

The morning was fairly straightforward, although M-lady and I were a little late to rise, getting out of bed around 7:45. I got Bud up and moving, and then got hom some breakfast after I got myself dressed. M-lady took Bud to school, and I got Buster dressed before Nanny J arrived.

I headed for work a short time later. The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud enjoyed his TKD class, and Buster was so exhausted later in the afternoon that he fell asleep on his chair in the kitchen. Unfortunately, he also peed on the chair while he was asleep. Oh well.

I got home around 5:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids were interested in a snack, so they had a few potato chips. I set them up to play on the Xbox for a little while, and monitored Buster, who didn't have a diaper on.

At about 6:00, I got Bud started on his homework. I supervised a little bit, and played with Buster. M-lady arrived home as Bud was finishing up, and he moved on to do a solid piano practice while we got dinner together. We noted that this is the last homework packet of the year for Bud, so he'd done with kindergarten homework now!

Buster wet his pants before dinner, but was clearly heading for the bathroom when it happened, so he gets points for making an effort. I cleaned him and the bathroom up and put him into a diaper for the remainder of the evening.

The kids ate a reasonable dinner, and played more together afterward. They're still enjoying the house made out of the foam flooring panels I put together a few days ago, so we're leaving that up for now. They played around that right up to snack time.

After a quick snack, I got Buster ready for bed. He was very agreeable, and we had fun reading stories, watching videos, and playing a few games on the iPad. We turned out the light around 8:30, and he fell asleep very quickly.

Self-Entertaining

Buster was up a little early this morning, shortly after 7:00, and waited (mostly) patiently for M-lady and I to get up. I rolled out of bed around 7:30, and got Bud up a short time later. We did a pretty standard morning routine, and I got Bud off to school in time. M-lady stayed home with Buster, and waited for Nanny J, who was a little late this morning due to a dentist appointment.

The kids seem to have had a good day. M-lady arrived home first, and I picked up some sushi for dinner on the way home. I arrived the same time as out dinner guests, Friend R and Friend T. The kids were bouncing around a bit, and generally entertained themselves while we caught up.

Bud came to dinner when we got that set up, but Buster deferred and played by himself for a bit. Bud joined him after eating. They played together well for a while, had a minor altercation, and settled down again. I got them set up playing Lego Star Wars, which kept them entertained for the rest of the evening.

Bud, who's ahead on his homework, didn't have to do any this evening. After our guests left a bit after 8:00, the kids had snacks. Buster ate some sushi, as well as some other food, so he got some nourishment this evening.

I did the bedtime routine with Bud. We read a bit, and watched some videos before turning out the light a little late, a few minutes after 9:00. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Playing House

M-lady and I rolled out bed around 7:30, and I rousted Bud a short time later. He was pretty good about getting up and getting breakfast. Today was apparently picture day at school, so M-lady and I made sure he looked presentable. Buster was up a bit later, and eating breakfast when Bud headed for school with M-lady. He was just finishing up when Nanny J arrived.

I got home around 5:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The kids were having fun bouncing around, and had recently been playing with some of the big blue interlocking floor pads. I suggested that I could build a house out of the pads, and the kids were excited to see if I could really do it. I had them help out a bit, and constructed a little house-shaped building for them from the interlocking pieces.

The kids were delighted. I suggested to Bud that he could play Boxcar Children, and he immediately assigned himself Henry and Buster Benny. They set up the little house like they were camping, and generally entertained themselves for about ninety minutes.

M-lady and I got dinner together as 7:00 approached, and Bud ate pretty well. Buster declined, and I hung out with him a bit after I'd eaten. He had a bit of a meltdown, and ended up opting to skip dinner and snack... he didn't eat anything during the evening. While I was getting him into PJs and hanging out with him, Bud did a piano practice and got a few more pages of his homework done.

M-lady put Bud to bed, and I read a few stories and watched a few videos with Buster. We turned out the light right around 8:30, and he was mostly asleep a bit after 9:00. I expect he'll be pretty hungry in the morning, though.

Graduation Ceremony

I rolled out of bed around 7:30ish, and checked on Bud. He had slept on his floor last night, in his sleeping bag. With a bit of prodding, he got up and got himself dressed.

M-lady left early to try and take care of a computer issue, so I got the kids ready. While Bud was eating breakfast, I rousted Buster, who was pretty groggy. I managed to get him dressed in time to take Bud to school. Buster was really well behaved for the drop off, and then we headed home and got Buster some breakfast. He was eating when Nanny J arrived.

I met the kids and Nanny J at Bud's TKD class. Nanny J took Buster home, and I stayed to watch. At the beginning of his class, there was a small ceremony to award Bud his yellow belt. I was part of the ceremony, accepting his old white belt (and grading notes from his yellow belt test). Bud was pretty excited, but kept himself focused and respectful during the belt ceremony.

I watched the rest of the class, and Bud learned the beginning of a new form. I also had a chance to chat with Bud's instructor, Master S, for a while. He gave Bud a lot of praise around his focus, discipline, coordination, and speed of learning. He predicted Bud would be picking up belts pretty quickly.

After Bud's class, I brought him home, and logged in to work while the kids had baths. I joined again to say goodbye to Nanny J a bit after 5:00. The kids and I had a little bit of a snack, and then played together for a bit before M-lady arrived home.

I had a call for work at 6:00, and M-lady watched the kids and got them dinner while I was on the call. I took over again at 7:00, and put a new TV show on for the kids which I found available for streaming: The Planets, a documentary about the solar system and our exploration of it. Both kids seem to enjoy it for a bit.

Bud did a quick piano practice, and finished a few pages of homework before snack time. The kids had a quick snack, and then got ready for bed. I went over Bud's new yellow belt TKD manual with him, which covers the forms and techniques he'll need to learn to get to the next level. We read a story as well before turning out the light.

Happy Mother's Day

The kids we up around 8:00, but were generally willing to let us snooze a bit. Bud was good about saying Happy Mother's Day, and really wanted to tell M-lady some things this morning, but I entreated him to let her snooze a little bit more.

I got up around 8:30, and offered to get Bud some breakfast, but he was involved in a book. I headed out a little after 9:00 for a bike ride.

M-lady had fun with the kids. They had a slower morning, and then headed out to Happy Hollow later in the morning. It was a little gloomy and cool out, so the kids wore sweatshirts and kept their hoods up for most the of the trip. They had a good time, ate lunch there, and ran around a bit. On the way home, they stopped to have the car washed.

I arrived home a few minutes before they did, and was wrapping up my shower when they got back. After cleaning up, I headed outside to hang out with the kids while they played in the front yard. We had video chats with the grandparents, and the kids said Hi and offered Mother's Day wishes.

We headed inside a bit later, and got M-lady's Mother's Day present ready. Bud had already given her the bonnet he made for her in class out of paper mache, and the kids gave her the cards they had made for her yesterday evening. We managed to get her bigger gift wrapped up, and Buster offered it to her when she got back from running some errands.

I played some games with the kids, and then got dinner ready a short time later. We had waffles, and the kids ate very well. After dinner, I managed to get them into the shower to wash them off, and they got into PJs after that. I think they ate enough waffles that neither was interested in a snack, so I read a few stories to Buster and turned the light out around 8:20. He fell asleep very quickly, having missed his nap during the day.

Happy Mother's Day, and in particular to M-lady, whom I couldn't survive without.

Haircut Drama

The kids came and jumped on us fairly early in the morning, but M-lady was nice enough to field them for a bit. They actually played together fairly peaceably for a while.

I got up around 9:30, and got Buster some breakfast, since he hadn't eaten yet. After a bit we all loaded up and headed to the mall to wander through the Apple store. We also headed over to the Lego store, where the kids each got a minifig with their own money. Lego is selling little opaque packs containing one 'collectible' minifig, and the buyer doesn't know which one they've gotten until they open the bag.

We headed home, and the kids opened their bags immediately. They each got a monster: Bud got a Frankenstein's monster, and Buster got a werewolf. They were pretty pleased, and played with their new minifigs for about an hour.

I finally convinced the kids to have some lunch, and M-lady headed out to run some errands. After lunch, I got the kids loaded into the car and we headed over to the haircut place. Buster seemed a little nervous, but he's had his hair cut there before, and seemed OK.

They were showing Toy Story 3 on the TV, and Bud was rapt. It was a little intense for Buster, though, who wanted to look at something else. I obliged with my iPhone for a while. Bud got his hair cut first, and did fine. Buster was up second, and screeched when it was his turn. We had to strap him into his chair, where he wailed for a bit. Eventually he quieted down, but was clearly not happy about the situation. He liked the lollipop he got afterwards, though.

We headed home, and played outside for a little while as the kids finished their lollipops. Eventually we headed in, and got straight into the shower to wash off stray hair cuttings. After cleaning up, I worked on the computer for a bit with Buster watching Sesame Street while Bud read stories in his room.

M-lady headed out for the evening a short time later, and the boys and I played for a bit. I eventually headed to the TV to play some Lego Rock Band with Buster. On the third song, I looked over and saw he had fallen asleep sitting on the couch next to me. He didn't have his diaper on (still potty training), so I put a pad under him and Bud and I played some Xbox together.

Buster snoozed for about 45 minutes, and then I started working on dinner while he was waking up. We had roll-up pancakes for dinner, which the kids enjoyed. Dinner lasted right up to bedtime, though, so we headed upstairs after finishing up dinner.

During the bedtime routine, I discovered a transgression Bud had committed during the week. He'd taken some more of my Star Wars action figures and opened them. I gave him a stern talking to and sent him to bed directly.

Buster had a minor meltdown at bedtime, but was OK after a couple of minutes. We turned the light out around 8:30, and he was asleep around 9:00. I headed downstairs to watch some TV.

At about 11:00, I found Buster asleep, curled up on the floor of our bedroom with his head resting on M-lady's big stuffed octopus. He was very cute. I took him back to his bed and tucked him in without waking him up.

Indulgent Friday

M-lady up with kids first, around 7:30 this morning. I rolled out of bed a short time later, and got them some breakfast around 8:00. I took Bud to school this morning, and the dropoff was uneventful.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I arrived home around 5:00, and found Buster reading stories with Nanny J. M-lady had already taken Bud off to his piano lesson. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and then Buster asked to watch Animusic. We put that on and watched it together for a bit.

Bud and M-lady arrived home in time for Bud to watch the last segment with us. Bud had apparently done very well at his piano lesson. I set them up to play a game on the Xbox, and headed out to pick up some dinner.

We all ate when I returned. The kids ate well. After dinner, I played a little bit more Xbox with Bud before it was time for a snack and bed. We got the snack started a little late, as Bud and I were having a good time playing.

Bud was good about going to sleep, but Buster took a while. He was getting up and running around at nearly 11:00. He will peek in and giggle as we chase him back to bed... he clearly thinks it's a game that he's winning.

Quick Thursday

Everyone started getting up around 7:30, and Bud was pretty quick to get dressed and request breakfast. Buster had a very impressive halo of hair this morning.

Buster got dressed and had breakfast as well, and I sat with him and read stories for a little while after M-lady had taken Bud to school. Nanny J arrived before too long, and Buster played with her as I headed out to work.

I got home a bit after 5:00, and found the kids downstairs reading books. Buster transferred his book from Nanny J to me, and Nanny J took her leave. After a bit, I set up a DVD for Buster, and Bud and I attended to his last page of homework for the week, which Bud finished in short order.

After he was done, Bud and Buster sat down together to play some Lego Star Wars. I helped out now and then, but they played on their own for a bit.

M-lady got dinner together when she arrived home. Bud ate dinner with M-lady and me, but Buster deferred (after eating 2 edamame). After dinner Bud did a good piano practice, and we played a little more Xbox before snack and bedtime.

Buster didn't really eat very much for snack, either, and I got him into PJs. He was pretty tired, having missed his nap today, and fell asleep shortly after we turned the lights out around 8:30.

Warming Up

I ended up working most of the night, and got back home around 7:00. The kids were up a short time later, and Bud was good about getting dressed. I got Buster dressed as well, and we all had breakfast around 7:45.

M-lady took Bud to school a little later, and I played with Buster until Nanny J arrived. Buster dragged all his Lego from his room to ours, where he sat down to play for a bit. Nanny J eventually convinced him to take it back to his room.

I snoozed for a couple of hours, and then headed off to work. As I headed out the door, Nanny J arrived home after having picked up Bud. It was pretty warm out, and they were happy to head inside to get some lunch.

I got home a little after 5:00. Buster was reading in his room with Nanny J, and Bud was playing quietly in his room as well. Buster apparently pooped on the potty today, so he continues to do well with that. After we said goodbye to Nanny J, both kids were interested in playing some Xbox.

We did that for a bit, and M-lady arrived home before too long. M-lady was nice enough to pull some dinner together, and the kids ate pretty well once we got them to the table. Buster ate quite a bit.

Bud had a good piano practice after dinner, and then finished all but the last page of his homework. The kids had snacks, and headed upstairs to get PJs on. M-lady got Buster ready, and I read stories with Bud. He fell asleep on his own a bit after 9:00. Buster took longer to fall asleep, not dropping off until closer to 10:00pm.

First Belt Test

Buster crawled into bed with us some time around 7:00, and promptly fell asleep. I discovered he was cuddled up with M-lady when I rolled out of bed around 7:30.

Bud was already up, and I encouraged him to get dressed while I did the same. I got him some breakfast, and he was ready to go to school when M-lady took him a bit after 8:00. I got some breakfast for Buster around the same time, after getting him dressed, and Nanny J arrived shortly after he finished up.

The kids had a good day. They were apparently scheduled to go get haircuts after Bud got home from school, but Buster opted to take a nap instead. With any luck, they'll get haircuts tomorrow, since they're both starting to get a little shaggy.

M-lady and I both got home shortly after 5:00. Bud was mostly ready to go, and I loaded him up and we headed over to his Taekwondo Studio so he could take his first belt test, attempting to advance to yellow belt. The test was a pretty busy affair, with about 20 students testing: about 15 children and 5 adults, all testing up from lower ranks (white through green belt).

Bud was by far the most competent white belt there, and among the most competent students of any level. He moved well, focussed and paid attention, and answered his oral question quickly and accurately. I was very proud of him.

The studio was very nice, and well set up for kids. The primary instructor made a point to introduce himself to me, as we hadn't met, and asked if I was Bud's father. He was very personable.

I let Bud know how proud I was, and we talked about the test on the way home. M-lady was kind enough to have dinner waiting for us when we arrived, and we ate together. After dinner, Bud really wanted to teach me some of his TKD forms, so I did that with him for a few minutes before snack time.

Buster was pretty good about going to bed this evening, once I got him into PJs. We turned out the light a little bit after 8:30, and he was asleep shortly after 9:00. Hopefully he'll be getting back to a more normal schedule.

Voracious Reader

Buster was up a bit early this morning, but let us sleep after M-lady pointed out he was up too early. Bud was up and dressed when I checked on him around 7:45, and I got the kids some breakfast a short time later. Bud was good about heading off for school, and we arrived a minute or two before the bell rang.

Bud had TKD today, and the kids seem to have had a good day overall. They were both playing with Bud's Taiko setup when I arrived home, loudly, and Nanny J was looking on tolerantly. After I'd dropped my things, we said goodbye to Nanny J, and I played with the kids a little bit.

We eventually set up in front of the TV, and I got the kids set up playing Lego Indiana Jones while I dialed into a meeting for work. The kids had fun with that, and M-lady arrived home a short time later. M-lady and I got started on making dinner in a bit, and the kids ate reasonably well.

After dinner, Bud did a big chunk of his homework for the week, and then shot through a quick piano practice. He's starting to use two hands for pieces, and is doing very well with that.

The kids got into PJs before snack time, and then M-lady tucked Buster in while I read a story with Bud. Bud finished another Boxcar Children book today, but fortunately M-lady checked out three from the library this time. We read a couple of chapters from the 5th book in the series, which he'll probably finish tomorrow. I'm going to have to go back and read these so I can talk to him about them.

I sat with Buster for a bit while he fell asleep, as M-lady ran out to get groceries. Buster took a long time to fall asleep, finally drifting off around 9:30ish.

Drum Day

The kids were up around 7:30 this morning, and played peacefully with each other until about 8:30. It was fantastic. Around then I got up and got Bud some breakfast, and got myself ready for a big bike ride.

I headed out a bit after 9:00, and didn't make it back until about 4:00. M-lady was wonderful and watched the kids for most of the day. Bud practiced his piano, Buster peed on the potty, and they had a fun outing to the local Cherry Blossom Festival.

They packed a picnic lunch and headed over, and munched on sandwiches while watching a Taiko performance. After the show, they headed over to the playground, where they apparently had a very good time. They also picked up some kettle corn and make a donation to the Japanese tsunami relief effort.

Buster fell asleep on the way home, and took a significant afternoon nap. Bud set up a big Taiko arrangement in the living room, but was kind and refrained from playing while Buster was still asleep. He was still snoozing when I got home. I showered, and bathed Bud at the same time. After cleaning up, we had a nice chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese, and then I had a nice call with Grandma W.

I got started on dinner a short time later, while Buster blinked awake and Bud banged away on his Taiko setup. He did a good job of capturing some of the rhythms.

Buster deferred on dinner, but the rest of us ate well. After I headed upstairs to help Buster with a Lego repair, he was willing to go down and eat a bit. I helped Bud pick up his room a bit, which he did a very good job with in the evening. By bedtime he'd gotten all the Lego off the floor, and his room was in a 'usable' state again.

I managed to convince Buster to take a shower with me just before bedtime, and M-lady got him into pajamas. I was also able to spend a couple minutes with Bud and the Lego Mindstorms set, where Bud created his first programs. I think he'll get the interface with some more practice, but the first issue is that many of the buttons on the GUI are very small, and he has trouble nailing them with the mouse. But he did create two programs which we tried out on the little rover we'd built: one which played sounds, and another which drove forward and backward.

After a quick snack, I read some stories to Buster and we turned out the light around 8:45. Buster had a long nap during the day, though, and didn't drop off to sleep until after 10:00. Hopefully he'll sleep in a bit tomorrow.
