Starting A New Movie

The kids slept well during the night. M-lady and I rolled out of bed around 7:30, and I worked on rousting Bud. He eventually got up and got dressed, and I helped him get some breakfast. M-lady got Buster dressed after he woke, and I helped him with breakfast as well. M-lady volunteered in Bud's class this morning, so took Bud to school.

Nanny J arrived a short time later, and Buster got a little upset. After hanging out in his room for a short time, he was OK. I did some work at home, and headed into the office around lunchtime.

Nanny J took Bud to another TKD class today, with Buster in tow. It apparently went very well again, and Bud had a good time.

I had a late meeting at work, so M-lady got home to relieve Nanny J. I arrived as they were finishing up dinner, just before 7:00. Bud had already done a good piano practice, so we watched some TV together.

After watching a segment of How Do They Do It? about making Lego, Buster wanted to watch Backyardigans. Bud asked if I would watch Star Wars Episode I with him, so we watched that on the TV upstairs together until snack time. Buster came and joined us for a few minutes after his show was over.

Snack time and bedtime went smoothly. I was able to get Buster into his PJs, and we read a few stories, watched a few videos, and turned the light out around 8:30. He went to sleep relatively quickly.

His nose is still running pretty constantly. Hopefully he'll start drying up a little bit tomorrow.

Warming Up

The kids were up a bit after 7:00, and the morning routine was fairly standard. I got breakfast for Bud, then played with Buster in his room for a bit while M-lady took Bud to school. Bud didn't get dressed or have breakfast until Nanny J arrived.

I stayed home from work again to try and recover. Buster had a mellow day, and seems fine save for still having a drippy nose. Bud had a good time at school, and hung out with me in the office for a bit in the afternoon while I finished up work.

Bud and I played outside for a short time around 5:00, since the weather has turned nice again, and then headed in at 5:15 to say goodbye to Nanny J. Bud went up to his room to read a new Lego catalog which arrived in the mail, and I turned on the TV and watched a little bit with Buster. M-lady arrived a few minutes later and got dinner started.

Bud ate well, and Buster a little less so. After dinner, Bud did his homework and a quick piano practice while I sat with Buster a bit and then got a little bit of work done. The snack and bedtime routines were smooth. I read some books with Bud, and then watched a couple of Power Rangers YouTube clips with him at his request. I can't say I'm wild about Power Rangers, but he seems to like them.

Buster still had a runny nose today, but seemed otherwise well.

Sharing

The kids slept pretty well. Buster woke at about 6:45, and I escorted him back to bed, where he patiently waited until 7:00 before coming back to our room.

I managed to pick up whatever the kids have/had, so I opted to stay home from work today. M-lady took Bud to school after I got him and Buster some breakfast. Buster and I put a couple of puzzles together before Nanny J arrived.

I managed a fairly quiet work morning. I made myself some lunch a bit after 1:00, and Bud noticed I was home. He came and visited me in the office from time to time. He was really anxious to watch the rest of Star Wars Episode IV, so I promised we could watch some after Nanny J left.

I made good on my promise, although Buster was a little grumpy about it. He said he didn't want to watch Star Wars with us, but his eyes were glued to it each time I turned it on. We eventually all watched it together.

M-lady arrived home around 6:30, and was willing to watch the kids for a bit while I snoozed. Bud came in and checked on me occasionally, but I was able to rest until nearly 7:30, when I got up to have a snack. Both kids ended up eating oatmeal with me for their snacks.

We did a slightly out-of-order bedtime routine, with the kids getting into PJs before watching a little bit of TV together. They'd already eaten a snack, so it was up to bed after the TV.M-lady read stories with Bud, and I read a few stories and watched a couple of videos with Buster. We turned the light out around 8:30.

Buster was up once at about 9:15, but fell asleep pretty quickly after I put him back in bed. Buster's nose was really runny all day, and he continues to be fairly snotty while sleeping. Hopefully it doesn't wake him during the night.

A New Class

Buster woke a couple of times during the night, but went back to sleep quickly. We got up around 7:30, and M-lady got Bud out of bed. I helped get him dressed and got him some breakfast, and M-lady took him to school around the time I was getting Buster up. Buster elected to play with his HotWheels rather than get dressed, and was busy with that when Nanny J arrived.

M-lady came home mid-afternoon to take Bud to a new class. Nanny J and Buster came along as well. They headed to take Tae Kwon Do at the studio where Bud's friend D trains. Bud apparently had a great time. Buster watched the class a little bit, but mostly entertained himself in the 'younger sibling play area'. This Tae Kwon Do school seems very kid-friendly.

Bud got a uniform, which he showed me when I got home a bit before 6:00. After I settled in, Buster sat with me and watched some Sesame Street on the computer while I called into a late work meeting. Bud did a solid piano practice with M-lady during the same time.

A bit later, while I was still on the call, I took the kids downstairs and let them play some Xbox while I finished up the dinner preparations that M-lady started. I got off the call in time to get dinner on the table. Bud ate well, and Buster nibbled a little bit.

After dinner, the kids generally entertained themselves while M-lady and I cleaned up. Snack time came up quickly, and Buster had a bowl of fruit before heading upstairs for bed. I read some stories with Bud, and we watched a little bit more of Star Wars before turning out the light.

Buster didn't run a fever all day today, and seemed on the road to recovery. Unfortunately, I think M-lady and I might be coming down with whatever he had.

Riding a Bike

Buster slept pretty well during the night. He was up this morning around 8:00ish, and Bud around the same time. He seemed in good spirits, although he was running a light fever of about 100 when he got up. Around 8:30 I got myself up and headed downstairs to get started on breakfast.

I made waffles this morning, which turned out really well. The whole family enjoyed them. Afterward, I ended up snoozing for nearly an hour on the couch while Buster played nearby.

At about 11:30, M-lady headed out to run some errands. I played with the kids, and we watched a little bit of TV before getting started on lunch. Bud had a solid lunch, but Buster just nibbled a little. After lunch, we played a little bit more, and had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. At around 2:00, I headed upstairs with Buster, and we worked on napping. He wasn't running a fever, but was clearly pretty whooped. He fell asleep about 5 minutes after we turned out the light, and had a solid 2-hour nap.

Bud and I watched a little bit more of Star Wars and then got a snack. M-lady arrived home a short time later, and Bud and I headed outside to work on riding his bike.

Bud now rides his bike by himself. He still has a little bit of trouble getting started and stopping without falling over, but once he's going, he's fine. He's at a point where he doesn't need me to practice anymore. Yay! I adjusted his seat and handlebars for him today, since he's gotten bigger since we bought the bike.

We came in near 5:00, and had a nice video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Buster woke from his nap with his high fever again, around 103, and was looking a bit floppy. But he grinned and giggled at the grandparents a little bit. Bud chatted with them a bit, too.

We played a little bit of Xbox together, and then got started on dinner. The kids ended up eating pretty well. Bud ate a solid dinner, and Buster had most of his lunch. Afterward, Bud did a solid piano practice with M-lady while I watched a little Blue's Clues with Buster on the iPad.

That took us to snack time and bed time. Buster and I read some stories and watched a couple of videos, and then turned out the light around 8:30. His fever was down to about 100, so he got one more dose of medicine before bed. He fell asleep before 9:00, and hopefully will get a solid night's sleep.

Cirque #2

Buster had a tough night. He woke a number of times, and had a fever through much of the night. M-lady and I took turns sleeping with him in his room.

M-lady got up with the kids in the morning, and got them breakfast at about 9:00. Buster was cheerful, although clearly not at full strength. His nose was running like a faucet all day, and finally slowed down a little bit in the evening.

Bud checked in on me a few times as I slept in. I finally got up around 10:30 and took Buster with me to the grocery store. He was well behaved, and enjoyed the trip. Meanwhile, M-lady took Bud out to run some errands and hit the library, where Bud picked up a lot of books. They arrived home as Buster and I were finishing up our lunch.

I watched some TV and played with Buster, and Bud sequestered himself in his room to read for a bit. We discovered around 2:00 that Buster's fever had unfortunately spiked again, so I administered ibuprofen.

Nanny J arrived around 2:30. Busted didn't seem to mind as Bud and M-lady and I headed out to see the Cirque Du Soleil show Quidam. Buster's fever apparently broke around 4:00, and he was fine when we got home around 6:00.

Bud really enjoyed the show. He had a tendency to talk during some of the acts a little too loudly, but other than that was really good. We had fun looking at the technical setup (lights and staging) before the show started. Bud was very interested in the spotlight operators sitting up in the lighting grid.

M-lady and I had some dinner shortly after getting home, and Bud joined us before too long. Buster deferred, and we weren't pushing him to eat.

A Little Under the Weather

It was another early morning for M-lady this morning, so she was off before anyone else was up. Bud woke a little early, and was dressed by 7:15 or so. I didn't have any trouble getting Buster ready and out the door this morning, as he was anxious to hold the umbrella again. He was a little disappointed that it wasn't raining.

The dropoff went fine, and I brought Buster back home in time to meet Nanny J. I headed off to work a short time later.

Nanny J called M-lady around noon to let us know that Buster was running a fever of about 103. I headed home and medicated Buster as soon as I arrived, around 12:30. We all watched a little bit of TV together, and Buster had a solid nap in the afternoon. His fever progressively reduced.

M-lady came home around 4:45 to pick Bud up and take him to his piano lesson, where he did reasonably well. Buster woke and had a snack with Nanny J before she left at about 5:15.

Buster asked to play Kinectimals, which I went ahead and set up for him. He proved that he could manipulate the game well enough, and select buttons and actions. He had a great time playing with a little tiger cub. I need to set up the Kinect to recognize him so I don't have to sign him in.

After Bud got back from his lesson with M-lady, I ran out to pick up my bike from the shop. When I got home, we all had some dinner together, although Buster ate pretty lightly. After dinner, I purchased a game called Fruit Ninja on the iPad, and we all had fun playing it together for a bit.

Snack time and bed time came up pretty quickly. Buster's fever was gone by bedtime, which was good. He took a while to fall asleep, though, and was up a few times during the evening.

Umbrella Day

Buster slept solidly again last night. I rolled Bud out of bed a little after 7:30, and he was pretty good about getting ready and getting some breakfast. Buster slept in a little bit. M-lady managed to get him up and dressed, and I fed him part of his breakfast before we had to go to take Bud to school. M-lady had to leave early again, so Buster came with me on the drop off.

Buster didn't want to go, so I had to carry him screaming out to the car. Once we were on our way, he settled down. It was raining hard, so I had brought an umbrella. Buster really enjoyed holding the umbrella while I carried him. We got Bud to his class, and then Buster wanted me to carry him all the way back to the car so he could keep concentrating on the umbrella. He mostly managed to keep it overhead.

Nanny J arrived while Buster was having his second breakfast, and I headed to work soon after. I arrived home around 5:00, and found both kids having a little snack. I dropped my things, and we said goodbye to Nanny J.

Our iPad arrived in the mail today, so I started getting that set up while the kids sat next to me and watched Sesame Street on the computer. M-lady arrived home a little after 6:00, and we all played with the iPad a little bit before getting started on dinner.

Bud ate a good dinner, and Buster ate a bit as well. After dinner, Bud was good about finishing his homework for the week, and did a quick piano practice before snack time. We rushed through snack time a little bit, since it was getting late, and M-lady and I got the kids ready for bed. Bud and I read a little bit, and then watched the beginning of Star Wars (the original movie) on the iPad before turning out the light.

Unsupervised Evening

M-lady had to head for work a little early again this morning, and was gone by the time I got up around 7:30. I rolled Bud out of bed, and we did a fairly standard morning routine. Buster slept solidly through the night and morning, however, and I had to roust him a bit after 8:00 to get him dressed so I could take him to drop off Bud.

It was a bit rainy, so we didn't have to wait outside. Bud headed in, and Buster and I headed back home. Buster likes to ride on my shoulders as we walk back, but I try to discourage him holding on to my ears.

We got Buster started on his breakfast when we got home, and Nanny J arrived a short time later. Buster was having fun playing with her when I headed out.

I got home around 5:00, and dropped my stuff. After saying goodbye to Nanny J, I started preparing for the dinner party we would be entertaining that evening. I got Buster a snack, and then started on dinner preparations. Bud mostly entertained himself in his room.

M-lady arrived home before too long, and party prep continued until guests started arriving around 6:30. M-lady and I were largely wrapped up in getting dinner together and entertaining, and the kids pretty much ran around doing whatever they wanted. One of the guests arrived bearing treats for the kids wrapped up in little treasure chests, which the kids adored.

The kids sort of ate dinner, and kept on playing. Around 8:00, I packed them up and got them ready for bed. They were cooperative, and we turned the lights out around 8:30. Buster took a while to fall asleep, but finally drifted off around 9:30 or so.

Buster was definitely more comfortable around the company, but Bud did pretty well himself. All in all it was a pleasant evening.

Just Hanging Out

Buster was up pretty early, and required a fair amount of early morning attention. M-lady ended up sleeping with him in his room for a while.

I got up around 7:30, and got Bud going to get ready for school. M-lady had to leave for a meeting around 8:30, so I took Buster with me to drop Bud off at school after we'd all had some breakfast. The kids were pretty well behaved, and I got back in time to read a story with Buster before Nanny J arrived.

I got home around 5:00. After Nanny J took her leave, I encouraged Bud to do a couple of pages of homework before we got to serious playing. I read a few stories with Buster while Bud finished up his work.

The kids played some Xbox for a bit. I tried to get them to go with me to the bike store to pick up my bike, but I couldn't get them motivated. We ended up watching TV until dinner time.

The kids ate pretty well, and we had time to play just a little bit more before snack time. The kids were reasonably good about getting ready for bed, but Bud started getting a little contentious as I was trying to read stories to him and Buster. Both kids were in bed when M-lady arrived home shortly after 8:00.

M-lady checked in with Bud for a bit, and then sat with Buster until he fell asleep. Hopefully Buster will sleep in a little bit later tomorrow morning.

Contention

Bud was up when I got up around 7:30 this morning, reading in his room. He got himself ready for school with enthusiasm, I believe largely because I bought some cereal with him that he was looking forward to for breakfast.

He had a quick breakfast, and was ready to go a good 20 minutes early. Buster snoozed for a long time, but eventually got up around the time Bud was finishing breakfast. M-lady got him dressed. He ate after Bud and I headed off to school.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home around 5:00, and Bud showed me some of his Tae Kwon Do kicks he'd been practicing during the day. After Nanny J left, we read stories together for a bit.

I had a business call I needed to be on at 6:00. Unfortunately, the kids had a disagreement at about 5:45, and I sent them both screaming to their rooms. Bud was the first to come out and apologize to his sibling. Buster stayed in his room for about 40 minutes before relenting and offering a very quiet "Sorry" to his brother. The kids played a little bit of Xbox together after making up.

I got dinner for the kids around 7:00, and M-lady arrived home as we were sitting down at the table. Both kids ate well, which was good, as we discovered that Buster wasn't eating an afternoon snack, as we had suspected. It meant that Buster often doesn't really eat much between lunch and breakfast.

After dinner, Bud worked on his homework while Buster played a bit. He got a quick piano practice in as well before snack time rolled up. I read stories to Bud at bedtime before we turned out the light around 8:30.

Buster took a while to fall asleep, and jumped out of bed a few times. M-lady herded him back for the first couple expeditions, and I took him back a couple times after 9:00. He finally drifted off around 9:30 or so.

Getting Things Done

Buster and Bud were both up a bit before 8:00. Bud was kind enough to hang out in his room for a bit. Buster was in our room by about 8:00, and M-lady attended to him first. I got up with him around 8:30, and finally got him dressed around 9:00ish. Bud had breakfast around that time as well, and then went back to playing with Lego in his room. I watched a little TV with Buster until a bit after 10:00, at which point I headed back to bed for a nap and M-lady got up.

I got up around noon, and had lunch with the kids after getting dressed. At breakfast, Buster had pointed out to me a tree which had fallen over in the back yard (perhaps classified as a tall shrub), and I head out back after lunch between rainstorms to right it. I was working in the garage for a bit breaking down cardboard boxes as well.

M-lady headed out to run some errands when I came in, so I loaded up the kids and we headed out to get some groceries. The kids were well behaved on the trip, although they wanted to play outside when we got home, even though it was raining. I finally got them inside and we had a snack.

I played with Buster for a bit, and then worked on some furniture rearrangement after M-lady arrived home. Bud spent a good portion of the afternoon playing with his Lego.

Bud was kind enough to give one of his birthday presents to Buster. It was a HotWheels playset, and Buster had a great time with it after we opened it up. Buster played with it for most of the evening, skipping the dinner that M-lady made.

Bud ate a solid dinner, however, and afterward I got both kids into the shower. I had a social event to go to at about 6:30: at that point Bud was in PJs, and Buster was close. I asked both kids to be good for M-lady and headed out.

The kids were good for M-lady. Buster ate his dinner, and Bud had a solid snack. Both kids were apparently very agreeable. After snack, bedtime went smoothly, and both kids were in bed and asleep fairly quickly.

Saturday, March 19, 2011

Breaking Boards

The kids were up this morning a little bit before 8:00. Bud kept himself to his room, and M-lady got up to tend to Buster. Unfortunately, Buster had a bit of a bloody nose, so M-lady needed to clean that up.

A short time later I got up to break up a fight between the kids. I ended up sending both to their rooms until they apologized to each other. Bud apologized first, and we headed downstairs to get some breakfast. Buster eventually owned up as well, and had some breakfast with M-lady.

After breakfast, we all worked a bit to rearrange furniture in the house. Bud's room got the most attention, and we took out one of his small bookcases, moved it into Buster's room, and put a new big bookcase in. Both kids were happy with the results.

The kids and I had some sandwiches for lunch, and then Bud and M-lady ran out to run some errands. I played some games with Buster, and we watched a few minutes of TV before the others returned.

They had stopped by the library, so Bud spent most of the rest of his free time today reading in his room. He and M-lady headed out again before too long, though, to a birthday party. His Friend K has started Tae Kwon Do lessons, and the party was at the studio, where all the kids got a small lesson. Bud apparently had a great time, learned a bit, and got to break a board (apparently 1/2" balsa) with an axe kick.

I took Buster out to a couple of bike shops while the others were out. Buster behaved really well, and I was able to pick up a few items I've needed and drop off my ride for a tune up. I enjoyed the time hanging out with Buster, too.

We got home a few minutes before M-lady and Bud. Everyone settled in for a bit, and I got to hear all about the party. We loaded up again shortly and headed out to get some dinner.

We arrived at Red Robin a little later than usual, and it was pretty busy. The kids were good through the wait, though, particularly as I'd had the foresight to bring their iPhones. They stayed entertained without much problem. Bud ate a solid dinner, and Buster again ate sparingly.

Bud again read in his room after dinner, while the rest of us played Lego Rock Band for a bit before snack time. Buster ate a lot of fruit at snack time, and was pretty tired when we turned out the light around 8:30.

Video Game Self-Sufficiency

Bud was pretty good about getting out of bed, and we had a fairly straightforward morning routine. I took Bud to school in the rain, and he was happy to head inside when they opened the door.

The kids seem to have had a good day. M-lady came home to take Bud to his piano practice, which apparently went very well. I got home a bit after 5:00, and Buster and I said goodbye to Nanny J. We played together for a bit before turning on the TV for a few minutes.

Bud and M-lady arrived home a short time later, and I caught up with them. The kids played Lego Star Wars for a bit, which they really enjoyed. Bud can successfully negotiate most of the levels by himself now, so I don't need to help out very often.

Dinner started a little bit late. Buster again deferred, although Bud ate pretty well. After dinner, we all played a few songs of Rock Band together before snack and bedtime.

Bud was good about getting ready for bed, and we read stories together for a little while before turning out the light. We were just a little bit late, and turned the light our close to 9:00. Bud fell asleep pretty quickly.

Martial Art Interest

Buster wandered in shortly after 7:00 again, and we rolled out of bed a bit later. I got Bud up around 7:40, and he was pretty good about getting dressed and heading down for breakfast. M-lady took him to school, and volunteered in his class this morning. The kids were pretty excited to see the mess that the leprechauns caused last night. No one managed to catch a leprechaun, though.

I hung out with Buster for a bit, and then handed him off to Nanny J while he was eating breakfast. I headed to work soon afterward.

The kids seem to have had a good day. When I got home, Bud let me know that two of his friends are taking Tae Kwon Do, and he sounded interested in trying that out. I'm more of a Wushu/Kung Fu guy, but I'd love to see him start any martial art. Maybe I'll take Tae Kwon Do with him for a while.

I got Bud started on his homework pretty quickly. M-lady arrived home, and Bud did a good job getting all his homework done. Afterward, the boys and I played some Xbox before getting some dinner.

Once again, Bud ate well, and Buster eschewed dinner. After dinner, I played with the kids a little bit before Bud needed to work on his piano. We played a game together, and when I made a lucky guess, Bud had another meltdown. I wonder if he's not sleeping well or something.

M-lady managed to get him to practice piano while I hung out with Buster. I had a cursory snack with Bud, and then we did the bedtime routine. I read some stories and watched a few videos with Buster before turning out the light. Buster took a while to fall asleep, drifting off around 9:30 or so.

Evening Meltdown

Buster came in this morning right at 7:00, and joined us in bed for a bit. I got out of bed a few minutes late, since the alarm I'm using seems to be an hour off since the time change. I got Bud out of bed, and we both got ready directly. Bud was good about getting ready. He didn't have to hurry, but he didn't have any time for messing around.

I got him to school on time, and then headed to work. Apparently his continued rosy cheeks got noticed at school today as well, and he was sent to the office to check for a fever. He doesn't have a fever. I think it's windburn from skiing.

Bud had a playdate with Friend D after school, and apparently had a good time.

I got home around 5:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J and watched some TV. M-lady arrived home before too long. We had dinner around 6:30, and both kids ate pretty well. After dinner, Bud had a meltdown when we asked him to do homework and practice piano.

The kids ended up skipping snack, and going straight to bed. We agreed with Bud that he needs to start doing homework either in the afternoon, or right when M-lady or I gets home, so he's not too tired to do it later in the evening. I read to Bud a bit before we turned out the light.

Buster was in good spirits all evening, but didn't go to sleep for a while. He was up and running around giggling a few times, finally going to sleep around 9:!5.

Trap Project

Buster woke around 6:30 this morning, and I tucked him back in bed, letting him know that he needed to stay in bed until 7:00. At about 7:01 he showed up again, letting us know that it was 7:00 now.

I got Bud out of bed a little after 7:30, and he got up slowly. We had some breakfast around 8:00. At 8:15, I tried to get him out the door to head for school, and he got cranky and slow. He claimed to be too tired to go to school, and was whiny and difficult all the way in. We managed to get to school on time, but there was some luck involved.

The kids generally seem to have had a good day. Buster went shopping with Nanny J in the morning, and they stocked up on bagels, which also supplemented lunch for the boys.

I got home around 5:00, and dropped my things before saying goodbye to Nanny J. Both she and Bud pointed out that his cheeks had turned particularly rosy today, but we couldn't come up with a cause. He's just got rosy cheeks today.

The kids and I played a little bit of Xbox, and then I got working on Bud's school project which needs to be delivered tomorrow. It's a Leprechaun trap, designed by Bud and myself. Bud came up with a lot of the design elements, and I helped pull them together into something that works. We worked on it together this evening to finish it up, and I think we were both pretty proud of the result.

That took us right up to dinner time. M-lady prepared dinner for us while we were working, which was nice. Bud ate well, and Buster deferred. After dinner, Bud had a good piano practice and got a couple pages of homework done.

At snack time, Buster decided to head for bed rather than eat his dinner. Bud had a bit of a meltdown, which M-lady handled well. She got Bud ready for bed, and read stories with him before turning out the light.

I had a good time reading stories and watching a few videos with Buster. We turned the light out around 8:30, and he fell asleep reasonably quickly.

Monday, March 14, 2011

The Usual

We were worried that the kids would have some trouble getting up this morning due to the time change, but that proved to not be a problem. Both kids were up around 7:00ish. M-lady was already on a business call by that time, and Buster hung out with her a little bit. Bud spent the time playing Lego in his room.

Around 7:30 both kids were dressed and I got some breakfast for them. I had to jump on a call at 8:30, so M-lady watched the kids for a few minutes before Nanny J arrived.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud didn't have school today, so he stayed home with Buster and Nanny J. M-lady arrived home first this afternoon, and I got home around 5:30. I had the opportunity to play a little bit of Xbox with the kids before I had to jump onto another call for work.

M-lady got dinner for the kids while I was on the call. Bud ate really well, and Buster generally deferred. After dinner, Bud had a really good piano practice while I hung out with Buster. After Bud's practice, we all watched a few minutes of TV before starting on snack time.

Bud ate a light snack, and Buster had some fruit, but not really a solid dinner. M-lady put Buster to bed while I read stories with Bud. Bud was good about going to bed, but Buster took a while to fall asleep and escaped a few times. He finally fell asleep around 9:30 or so.

Given that Buster is having trouble falling asleep in the evening at bedtime, I wonder if he still needs his afternoon nap.

Driving Home

The kids slept reasonably well during the night. Buster had one panic attack during the night, but M-lady was able to lull him back to sleep quickly.

We all got up this morning around 8:00 (after the time change), and got ourselves together and packed up for the trip home. The kids were a little rambunctious, but were pretty good once we got out of the hotel room. We got loaded up into the car, checked out, and headed to find some breakfast.

After a pleasant breakfast and filling the gas tank, we hit the road. It was snowing slightly in the mountains, and drizzling a little bit at lower altitudes. I drove the first part, and M-lady took the second half. We had a few stops, and made it home by about 2:00.

We got some lunch at home, and unloaded the car. We spent a pretty mellow afternoon and evening at home. I went out with Bud briefly to return the rental skis and boots, and M-lady ran some errands a bit after that. We chatted with grandparents, played some Xbox, had dinner, and took showers before snack and bedtime.

The kids were pretty well behaved, if a little tired. I read stories and watched a couple videos with Buster before turning the light out, and he fell asleep pretty quickly. We had a fun weekend, and we're all happy to be home again.

Skiing

Today we started on a little family adventure. M-lady and I rolled the kids out of bed a little before 6:00, got them dressed, and we all loaded up into the car. We headed out right around 6:00. Bud was excited to see the sun rise.

We drove up to Tahoe to play in the snow and introduce Bud to skiing. The kids were great on the drive up, but didn't sleep at all. We stopped for some breakfast a little after 7:00 near Davis, then made a pit stop for Bud near Applegate. The kids were playing with their iPhones when we arrived at Sugar Bowl ski resort at about 10:00.

Bud and I got into our ski gear and headed out to the lodge. M-lady took Buster, and they spent some time hanging out in the car before looking for a place to play in the snow.

Buster was reluctant to put snow clothes on, since he's never been in a cold place before. So he was limited in what he could do at first. They stopped a couple of places, and took some great pictures of Donner Lake, but M-lady didn't get him into snow clothes until they came back to Sugar Bowl after lunchtime. They rode the gondola to the lodge (which Buster loved), and played in the snow there a bit.

Meanwhile, Bud and I were on the mountain, skiing. I spent a lot of time at the beginning with him standing between my skis, holding on to the poles I was holding horizontally. He eventually got to standing on his own, and working on snow plowing. He was getting it, but getting tired, as we headed in to meet M-lady and Buster.

Bud and I stopped and had lunch at the lodge, and overall he had a great time. He fell down a lot, but didn't mind, and got pretty good at getting up again. He also did a great job getting on and off the chairlifts.

We headed back to the car after meeting up with M-lady, and went to a nearby ski resort which offered tubing which M-lady had scouted a bit with Buster earlier in the day. Tubing is essentially sledding on big inner tubes, and both kids were interested. There was a small hill with a conveyor belt to take people to the top. All four of us headed up, and we all had a great time. Buster rode with M-lady or I, and Bud mostly rode alone. We spent the better part of an hour on the hill, having a blast.

After heading back to the car, we found a pizza place in Truckee and had some dinner. Then we headed back to our hotel room, which was small but serviceable. We settled down and watched a little TV before taking showers and getting ready for bed.

We had two queen beds, one of them a sofa sleeper. Bud and I slept on the hide-a-bed, and M-lady slept with Buster. The kids were understandably a little wired at bedtime, but eventually fell asleep after a busy and successful.

Uncle R

The morning was fairly standard, with Bud and Buster up around 7:30. I got some breakfast for them, and then took Bud to school for the usual drop off.

I took the day off work to spend time with a good friend of mine who was visiting from out of town. We had a great day out and about, and got home a little after 4:00. Both kids were a little shy at first, but warmed up before too long.

M-lady arrived home soon and took Bud off to his piano lesson, which apparently went pretty well. While they were out, Buster and Uncle R interacted a bit more, and we ordered take out dinner. Bud and M-lady arrived home just as Uncle R, Buster, and I were headed out the door to pick it up.

Buster was given extra fortune cookies at the restaurant for being so cute, and was very excited to have been given his own bag to carry.

We had a great dinner when we got home, and the kids ate well. There was a little time after dinner for playing Rock Band, which we all enjoyed together. That led pretty quickly to snack and bedtime.

The kids said goodnight to Uncle R, and M-lady and I worked on putting the kids to bed. I read stories and watched a video with Buster, and then M-lady did the final tucking in for both kids.

Nannyless Morning

M-lady was up a little early this morning, around 6:00. The kids didn't start getting up until closer to 7:00. I got up around 7:30, and found Bud already dressed. M-lady got Buster dressed, and I got the kids some breakfast. Bud was pretty good about getting ready for school, and M-lady took him while I stayed home with Buster.

Nanny J had an errand to run this morning up in San Francisco, so M-lady and I needed to keep an eye on Buster. She played with him until about 10:30, during which time I worked upstairs. They seem to have had a pretty good time together.

She headed off for work then, and I played with Buster for a bit. I had an 11:00 call I needed to be on, so Buster and I watched some Sesame Street while I was listening to the call. After the call was done, we read stories together and did some puzzles.

Nanny J picked up Bud from school on her way back, and then arrived home together just after 12:00. They were getting lunch as I headed out to work.

I got home around 5:00, and Bud let me know that he'd fallen off a chair and hurt his side. I'm not entirely sure what actually happened, but he managed to get a bit of an abrasion from his armpit almost down to his waist. The two worst patches were at the armpit and on his ribs. I put a band-aid on his ribs at his request, but we can't really bandage the armpit. I can't figure out how he scraped there, though. I expect he'll be fine tomorrow.

The kids and I played a little Xbox and watched some Little Einsteins until M-lady arrived home, and then got started on dinner. Bud ate pretty well, but Buster skipped dinner and snack entirely this evening. I hope he ate well during the day.

Bud did his piano practice after dinner, and we had time to play a little Xbox as a family before snack time. I got Buster into PJs, and then read another chapter of The Hobbit to Bud before turning out the lights. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Somewhat More Successful

M-lady had another early meeting this morning, and headed out around 7:15, before the kids were up. I got out of bed around 7:30, and rolled Bud out of bed. Buster woke around the same time, and I got him dressed while Bud got himself ready.

We all had breakfast together, and then loaded into the car to take Bud to school. The dropoff went smoothly, and Buster and I came home to meet Nanny J. When she arrived, I sequestered myself into our home office and worked for the morning.

I headed out around 1:00, and the kids were doing well after having some lunch. I got home again a bit after 4:00, and headed back up to the office to finish out the work day. Bud came and hung out with me a bit, but was pretty good about letting me work. A bit after 5:00, I emerged and we said goodbye to Nanny J.

Today, the kids were willing to get shoes and jackets on and head out the door with me. We loaded into the car and drove to the nearby ski store, which was having a clearance sale, given the lateness of the season. Good prices, no organization... it took a little while to find what we needed, but we got the kids all set with snow gloves and goggles for both kids, as well as a disc sled.

It took some rummaging around to find the right items, but the kids were pretty well behaved. After we headed out, we got gas for the car and picked up dinner on the way home. The kids ate pretty well, and M-lady arrived home as we were wrapping up.

Buster had a minor meltdown right before snack time, so missed his snack. Bud enjoyed his snack and then headed upstairs, getting into PJs and getting ready for bed with M-lady. M-lady also got Buster into PJs, and I read stories and watched some videos with him before turning out the light. He was apparently pretty tired, and fell asleep pretty quickly.

Intransigent

Buster was up around 7:00 this morning, and joined us in bed for about half an hour. M-lady and I got up closer to 7:30, and I rolled Bud out of bed and got him moving.

Bud was a little slow getting ready for school, but still made it out on time with M-lady. Buster and I had a good time playing with his Lego until Nanny J arrived. I headed off to work soon after.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster apparently didn't want to take a nap, right before he took an extra long nap.

M-lady and I arrived home around the same time, with the plan to try on what snow gear we had on the kids, and then head to the store to try and fill the gaps. We had a jacket that might fit Buster, but we weren't sure. The first issue we ran into with the plan was Buster's refusal to try on the coat.

M-lady eventually managed to get him into his coat, but he wasn't very happy about it. We were able to determine that the coat fit well enough, though, so we just needed to get gloves and goggles, and maybe some warm hats. But when we tried to get the kids out the door, both refused, and Bud started wailing.

We eventually gave up, sent Bud to his room, and spent the rest of the evening quietly. Bud eventually came downstairs to practice piano and write some thank you notes before having dinner. I ate with Buster, and M-lady and Bud ate together a short time later. After dinner, Bud worked on his homework before snack time. Buster opted to forgo his snack and headed straight to bed with M-lady.

Bud wanted to play some Xbox, so I played 5 minutes with him before bedtime on the condition that he get into PJs really quickly. He whined when the time was up, so we won't do that again. He wasn't particularly motivated getting into PJs and going to bed, but we read a short story before turning out the lights.

Improving Lego Skills

M-lady had to head in to work early this morning, and was gone before anyone else was up. Bud came in and woke me up about 30 seconds before my alarm went off. I got up and got myself dressed while Bud got himself dressed, and we headed downstairs to get some breakfast.

I headed upstairs to wake Buster around 8:00, and it took a little while to roust him. I eventually got him up and dressed, and we all loaded into the car to take Bud to school. Buster was plenty happy bouncing around as we dropped Bud off, and we headed back together to get home before Nanny J arrived.

Buster was having breakfast when Nanny J showed up, and I headed upstairs to join a meeting. I headed out to work a short time later, and said goodbye to Buster happily playing with Nanny J.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I arrived home around 5:00, and Bud immediately showed me a flap of skin about the size of a quarter which had peeled off the palm of his hand. It was a casualty from climbing the monkey bars at his party a couple of days ago. Fortunately, the skin underneath was tough enough that it wasn't uncomfortable for him. After dropping my stuff, I trimmed off the extra skin for him, and we put a band-aid on at his request.

Buster was having a good time building a person out of big Lego bricks with Nanny J. After Nanny J left, Buster knocked the guy down, and then built him up again. It was a pretty complex structure, and he did a really good job putting it together.

M-lady arrived home as Nanny J was heading out the door. I spent some time hanging out with the kids, and watching a little TV before I had to call into a late meeting for work. At that point, I set Bud up playing a game on the Xbox, and M-lady hung out with the kids for a bit before getting started on dinner.

I wrapped up with the meeting in time to help get dinner on the table, and we all ate together. Bud ate well, and Buster ate a bit. After dinner, Bud wrote a couple of Thank You notes, did a few pages of his homework, and practiced piano. I spent the time hanging out with Buster.

Snack time came up quickly, and bedtime followed. Buster and I read stories, and then watched a video before turning the light out. Buster took a while to fall asleep, dropping off a little after 9:00.

Another Birthday Party

The kids were up fairly early this morning, and M-lady got up with them and let me snooze for a bit, which was nice. I did get up briefly to help Bud open some of the packages of his birthday gifts received yesterday, but was largely able to sleep until about 8:30.

I got some breakfast for the kids at that point, and played with them for a while. M-lady and Bud headed out around 9:30 to run some errands, and I spent the time with Buster reading stories, and playing with his Lego, and watching a little bit of Sesame Street on the computer.

Bud got back into his Lego when they returned, and we played a little more before having lunch. The kids ate pretty well at lunch time, and afterward we had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Bud opened his birthday present from them, and had a nice chat about his birthday party yesterday.

Around 1:00 Bud and I headed out to Bud's friend M's birthday party. Friend M was holding a Lego party, which seemed right up Bud's alley as well. There were about fifteen kids in attendance, and Bud knew about five of them. Bud was a little shy at first, but had fun with the Lego activities, and enjoyed the cake, of course.

We headed out around 3:00, and waited for a few minutes at home for M-lady and Buster to arrived. They had run out to run some errands, and rather than come in Bud and I joined them in the car and we all headed over to the local ski rental place. We got Bud and M-lady sized for skis and boots, and picked out helmets and ski pants as well. We reserved the whole mess for next weekend. The kids were well behaved, and we were able to head home again in pretty short order.

I watched a little bit of TV with the kids, and then snoozed for a little while as we tried to have a low-key late afternoon. The kids generally kept themselves entertained, although I did again have to open some packages for Bud.

At about 6:00, M-lady and I got started on making dinner. M-lady made smoothies, and I made waffles. While dinner was being made, Bud knocked out about half of the the thank you notes he needs to write. He was pretty good about it, and even wrote a couple after dinner as well. Everyone ate well. After dinner, I took a few minutes to hang a painting in the dining room we had framed, and then played some Rock Band with the kids before snack time.

Buster was getting pretty tired by snack time, and M-lady didn't have much trouble putting him to bed. I read another chapter of The Hobbit to Bud before turning out the light, and he dropped off pretty quickly as well.

Happy Birthday, Bud

Buster was up around 6:30, so M-lady took him back to his room, where he proceeded to crawl on her for about half an hour. Bud joined them, and both kids crawled around on M-lady for a bit. The came and got me closer to 8:00, and I took them downstairs to get some breakfast.

A little later in the morning we had a video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Bud got to open his first present of the day, which was some books he was pretty excited about. One was a copy of Dr. Seuss's My Book About Me. Bud had perused my copy of the book, which I'd filled out when I was about his age. He grabbed a pencil and started filling in details pretty quickly.

We gave Bud our gifts to him a short time later. One was a big Lego set, which he was really excited about and spent most of the rest of the morning working on. I helped from time to time, and M-lady pitched in now and again as well. But Bud did most of the work.

I spent some time watching videos with Buster a little later in the morning, which led us to lunchtime. The kids ate pretty well, and after lunch we got serious about packing and getting ready for Bud's birthday party. Bud was pretty excited, and we were ready to go with some time to kill. Bud worked on his Lego more, and I watched some Sesame Street with Buster.

At last it was time to go. We loaded into two cars, in order to take all the party supplies, and headed over to the park. It was pretty quick getting set up on a couple of picnic tables. Babysitter D arrived to help set up as well, and be another pair of hands and eyes.

The guests arrived around 2:30, and the kids basically ran around for a couple of hours. I offered some more structured games, but they were mostly interested in just running around. They played with footballs and soccer balls I had brought, but mostly just ran around after each other. I did manage to put some cones out to sort of delineate a soccer field, which helped contain them a bit, and kept them out of the cricket game going on nearby.

There were about 15 kids at the party, so it was fairly busy. They all enjoyed the ninja cupcakes M-lady made, although it was too windy to light the candles for Bud. So we pretended they were lit, and everyone sang to him. We wrapped up the party around 4:30ish, and packed up and headed home.

We had a nice video chat with Ama and Agu, and Bud opened his gifts from them: More Lego, which he was really excited about. Bud proceeded to open gifts from his friends, and totally made out like a bandit. Buster was phenomenally patient through Bud's gift opening, and while he was interested in the process, never really interfered or protested.

We had dinner a short time later, and then I got the kids into the shower to get them cleaned up after running and flopping in the grass during the day. After getting cleaned up and putting on PJs, we all played with Lego more until it was time for a snack and then bedtime.

Buster was pretty tired by the end, and had a bit of a meltdown when I turned out the light. He passed out a few moments later, though.

Being Bud's 6th birthday today, it also marks the 5 year anniversary of me starting this blog. This is post number 1801, which means I've averaged just over 360 posts a year. Not bad. Thanks everyone for reading!

Building Excitement

Bud and Buster were both up around 7:00 this morning. Bud was jazzed because he was going to celebrate his birthday at school. Bud got himself dressed, and M-lady took care of Buster. I took Bud downstairs for breakfast first, and then got Buster some breakfast around the time M-lady was taking Bud to school.

M-lady got home first this afternoon to take Bud to his piano practice. I swung by Beard Papa on the way home to get some cream puffs as a birthday present for Nanny J. Nanny J shares Bud's birthday, which makes it hard to forget. I delivered the gift to her, and found she had left a bag of painting supplied for Bud for a birthday present.

Buster and I watched a little bit of TV together before M-lady and Bud got home. Bud had had a good day at school, and had enjoyed having his birthday celebrated there. We had a quick dinner after watching a little TV together, and the kids helped M-lady make cupcakes for Bud's birthday party tomorrow.

After dinner we watched a little more TV before snack time. When bedtime rolled around, Bud was excited to read more of The Hobbit before bed. We got through the second chapter, and Bud had a lot of questions about mutton, trolls, pick-pocketing, and expected conversation manners. He fell asleep reasonably quickly, though, once we turned the lights out.

Excited Evening

Buster came and joined M-lady and I in bed a bit after 7:00 this morning. I dodged a few kicks, and got myself out of bed a little after 7:30 to get Bud up. Bud was pretty good about getting dressed, and after I got Buster dressed we all headed downstairs for breakfast.

M-lady took Bud off to school, and I played with Buster for a bit before Nanny J arrived. Buster followed me around for a little while when I headed upstairs to collect my stuff, but was happily playing with Nanny J when I took off for work.

The kids were doing well when I got home, and followed me around as I put my stuff down. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and played some Lego Rock Band together. Bud sat out the first few songs, but then played drums for a bit while Buster sang.

Bud played a little more of another game before we got started on dinner. Bud ate well this evening, although Buster pretty much passed on most of the food. Buster didn't eat much at dinner or snack time.

After dinner, Bud did his piano practice, and we had a snack and started on the bedtime routine. Buster was pretty hyper around bedtime, and it took a while for him to calm down. I eventually wedged him into his PJs, and we read a few stories before turning out the light. He was calming down by the time the lights went out, but still got up from bed a number of times. I eventually sat with him until about 9:00, when he started to doze off.

Bud is getting excited about his birthday, which will be celebrated at school tomorrow, since his birthday falls on the weekend.

Library Delivery

M-lady had an early morning meeting this morning that she took from home, starting around 5:00. Buster got up around 6:30, and I took him back to his room and tucked him back in. I pointed out that he needed to stay in bed until 7:00, again showing him which number on the clock he should be looking at. He trotted out of his room at 7:00 on the dot, so we're now 2 for 2 on that strategy. Hopefully he'll start internalizing it and checking the clock before he comes out in the first place.

I rolled Bud out of bed around 7:30, and he once again got himself dressed and had a quick breakfast so that we could read a little bit more of The Hobbit before school this morning. After reading for about ten minutes, we packed up and headed off. It was a little rainy at the drop off, but not too bad.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Buster was reading a book with Nanny J when I arrived home, and Bud immediately started telling me about the games he plays with his friends at school. I dropped my things, settled in, and we said goodbye to Nanny J.

Bud and I had a little snack, and then we all sat down and played some Xbox together. M-lady arrived home a short time later, and there was a little bit of TV watched before I got started on making dinner. Bud practiced a little bit of piano before dinner. The kids ate pretty well, and Bud finished up his homework and piano practice before we headed upstairs to get ready for bed.

M-lady didn't have any trouble getting Buster to bed, and Bud was pretty good about getting into PJs. Bud decided to skip more of The Hobbit this evening, preferring to read some of the new library books M-lady picked up for him on her way home from work. He read about three books before we turned out the light.

Tolkien Excitement

Buster woke around midnight last night, and was up and down a bit before falling asleep again. Consequently, he slept in a bit this morning. I rolled Bud out of bed around 7:30, and he was anxious to continue reading The Hobbit. After he got dressed and had some breakfast, we read for about ten minutes before M-lady took him to school.

Buster was up by that point, so I hung out with him and read some stories until Nanny J arrived a short time later. Buster went down to get some breakfast with her, and I headed off to work.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home just after 5:00, and Bud immediately engaged me with his current ninja play. Buster was finishing up a snack, and we sat down and played a little bit of Xbox. M-lady arrived home shortly, and she and I were able to chat a bit while the kids continued their game.

Currently, Bud is the one with a live controller, and Buster has one without batteries. Buster is started to get wise to that, though, so I may need to connect him before too long.

We had dinner a bit before 7:00, and Bud ate pretty well. Buster nibbled a bit, but seemed content. After dinner, Bud worked on piano with M-lady, and I tried to get Buster into PJs. I had to chase him around a bit.

M-lady read more of The Hobbit to Bud at bedtime, and I read a few stories and watched some videos with Buster. Buster took a while to fall asleep, dropping off sometime after 9:00. Hopefully he'll sleep a little more solidly tonight.
