More Bread

M-lady was up for an early conference call this morning. I rolled Bud out of bed around 7:30, and he was pretty good about getting dressed and getting downstairs for breakfast. Buster woke a short time later, and M-lady got him up and dressed.

We had a new option for oatmeal this morning (Peaches and Cream flavor) which both the kids were excited to try. Neither apparently liked the new flavor, though. I took Bud off to class with plenty of time, and dropoff went well.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home a little early, around 4:30, while the kids were having their bath. At about 5:15 we said goodbye to Nanny J, and became embroiled in a large sword fight.

I plunked the kids down in front of the TV in order to bake some more bread. The loaf I had baked last night was consumed pretty quickly, and Bud asked for some more, so I decided to bake 2 loaves this evening. The kids backed that plan.

M-lady arrived home in short order. We had dinner around 7:00, while the bread was still baking, and both kids ate pretty well. Bud did a little bit of his homework, played some piano, and we had some fresh bread before heading upstairs to get ready for bed.

Bud was good about getting into PJs, and we read stories together for a while. We turned the light out around 8:30, and Bud fell asleep pretty quickly.

Staying Inside

M-lady got up with Buster first this morning, and snoozed with him in his room for a little while. She got him dressed, and then came back to bed around 8:00. Buster and Bud both followed her in, and they set up camp on our bed. I did my best to ignore them, but finally took them down to breakfast around 8:30. It was rainy all day, so we didn't get out of the house.

The kids ate good sized breakfasts, and then played together while I snoozed on the couch for a little while. M-lady relieved me around 9:30, and I headed back to bed for a bit. M-lady was kind enough to watch the kids for the morning, and I slept until 11:30. I guess I needed to catch up a bit.

I got up and got some lunch ready, and we all ate together. After lunch we had a fun video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B, during which they played some virtual Angry Birds. Granddad B would through his stuffed Angry Bird at the camera, and the kids would crash to the ground, pretending to be pigs. They had a lot of fun.

After the call, I played with the kids for a bit. Eventually Buster started to sound a little tired, so we turned on an episode of Sesame Street. Buster was very cuddly during the episode, so afterward I tried to get him to take a nap. It took about half an hour, but he finally fell asleep around 2:00.

Bud and I played on the computer together for a while, and M-lady took off to run some errands. Buster eventually woke and joined us, and we headed downstairs again in short order. I got a quick snack for the kids, and then got started on making dinner.

The kids ate pretty well, and after dinner Bud worked on a school project and did his piano practice with M-lady. Buster and I worked on getting the dough ready for a loaf of bread. Bud finished his practice just as the dough was being set out to rise, so we hustled through the shower routine. I got both kids cleaned up and then got the bread in the oven.

The kids and I watched a little bit of TV while waiting for the bread to bake. It came out of the oven just in time for snack time. The kids had a good snack, including some hot-from-the-oven bread, and then headed upstairs to get ready for bed. I read some stories with Buster, and we turned out the light around 8:30, once again, he didn't fall asleep for upwards of an hour, even though he seemed pretty tired. I suspect he doesn't fall asleep as readily when there's someone in the room with him.

Playing Together

The kids were up at the usual times, and M-lady got up with them and got them some breakfast. Around 8:00 or so I took Buster downstairs so M-lady could snooze a bit, and we watched an episode of Sesame Street. Bud read in his room for a bit, and then joined us.

M-lady headed out to run an errand a bit later in the morning, and the kids and I watched a bit more TV before packing up and heading out to the grocery store together. Buster was a bit reluctant to go, but I finally got him motivated. The kids were pretty good at the store.

After getting groceries, we headed over to Jamba Juice to pick up smoothies for an early lunch. Buster doesn't like the Jamba Juice store itself, since it's usually pretty loud in there with the blenders going. He tolerates it to get a smoothie, though.

We got home a few minutes before M-lady, and the kids were working on their smoothies in short order. After chatting with M-lady for a few minutes, I started packing up for a bike ride in the afternoon. M-lady finished up the early lunch with the kids, and then played with them a bit. She and Buster were playing with the I Spy mats they got for Christmas when I left, and Bud was back up in his room reading again.

M-lady took the kids to the library in the afternoon, where they picked up lots of books. Bud got the next couple books in the Boxcar Children series.

I got home around 4:00, covered in grime from a wet road ride. I got cleaned up and took a shower, and then helped M-lady get ready for dinner guests. Friends K and J arrived shortly after 5:00.

While they were here, the kids did a great job of entertaining themselves. They played together for much of the evening, and while M-lady and I listened for discord, they generally did pretty well playing together. Both ate pretty reasonable dinners, and they really enjoyed the cupcakes Friends K and J had brought for dessert.

After Friends K and J took their leave, I played some Xbox with the kids before we had snack time and bed time. Bud and I read some stories together, and turned out the light around 8:30. Bud was a bit upset that it was lights out time, but fell asleep pretty quickly.

Taking Down The Fences

We had a pretty standard getting ready for school morning. M-lady took Bud to school, and I played with Buster for a bit before Nanny J arrived.

Bud had a playdate with his Friend D after school, which he enjoyed. M-lady headed home early in the afternoon to facilitate. After the playdate, M-lady took Bud to his piano lesson, where he did pretty well. He's signed up for a couple more recitals in the coming months.

I got home a little after 5:00, and Buster and I said goodbye to Nanny J. We played together a little bit, and watched a little TV together. M-lady and Bud arrived home before too long with sushi for dinner. We all had a very satisfactory dinner.

After eats, M-lady and I decided it was time to take down the fence we have had up in front of the entertainment center for the past five years or so. The kids get around it without trouble, and I think Buster's old enough not to crash into the TV now. It was really nice to get the fence out of the room, and there's a lot more space for playing.

We all played and watched a little more TV before snack time came, and I read some stories to Buster at bedtime. We turned out the light around 8:30, but he didn't fall asleep until after 9:30.

A Little Wound Up

Buster slept a little later this morning, getting up a bit after 7:00, around the time the rest of us were rolling out of bed. Bud was pretty excited this morning, as his class was taking a field trip to the local Children's Discovery Museum. He and M-lady headed off for school around 8:20.

Buster helped me pick up the house a little bit for the cleaners, and then we had a little bit of time to play cars together before Nanny J arrived. I had a meeting I needed to dial into a few minutes later, and I headed to work after I was done with that.

As I was heading out the door, Buster and Nanny J were coming in from outside. Buster had a flower clenched in each fist, and was very proud of them. Nanny J took his shoes off for him, as his hands were full.

Bud apparently had a good time on his field trip. They were a few minutes late getting back, so Nanny J and Buster were waiting for him when he got off the bus. They walked home and had some lunch.

I got home around 5:00, while the kids were wrapping up a snack. I played with the kids for a bit, and we watched a little TV. M-lady got home a short time later, and joined us in front of the TV. The kids were a little rambunctious, and got a little out of hand before we decided to start up dinner. They got over their minor meltdowns pretty quickly, though.

Neither ate a solid dinner at dinner time, but M-lady and I had a nice meal. After dinner, Bud alternately worked on his homework and picked at his dinner more. I watched a little of the Stanford women's basketball game with Buster, and played with his train set with him a little bit.

I helped Bud with his homework a little as well, and we started snack time in short order. After snack, we did a fairly standard bedtime routine, and I read some stories with Bud. The light was out a short time after 8:30, and Bud fell asleep pretty quickly.

Dressing Challenge

Buster got up early again, and M-lady snoozed with him in his room until a little after 7:00. I got up with him then, and we got Bud out of bed around 7:30. It took some coaxing to get Bud dressed, but we eventually headed downstairs to get some breakfast. Bud ate a big breakfast, and was ready to go in plenty of time.

I rode my bike in to work today, so I was getting into cycling gear while we waited for Nanny J to arrive. Buster started playing with her as soon as she showed up, and I headed out.

M-lady arrived home in time to see Nanny J off, and she was taking pictures of the kids playing together when I got home around 5:30. The kids actually entertained themselves and each other for much of the evening. M-lady got started on dinner shortly after I got home, and we ate relatively early.

Bud ate well, but Buster eschewed most of his dinner. Buster managed to spill a bit of milk on his pants, so I took him upstairs to change. He wanted to get into PJs, so we did that. It took a while, though, as he kept running in and out of the room in various stages of undress.

Bud practiced his piano with M-lady, and then the kids played together some more while M-lady and I hung out together. Eventually the kids and I watched a little bit of TV before snack time and bed time.

I worked on getting Bud ready for bed, but he still didn't have his PJs all the way on when M-lady took over and I started reading stories to Buster. We read a few stories together, and then turned out the light. Buster seemed pretty tired, and dropped off to sleep quickly.

Nail Biter

Buster was up a bit after 7:00. Bud was a little harder to get out of bed this morning, but eventually was roused in time to get dressed and get some breakfast. Buster ate in his PJs, and finally let me get some clothes on him after M-lady took Bud to school. Nanny J arrived a few minutes later, and Buster did some puzzles with her.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got home around 5:00, and after I settled in we said goodbye to Nanny J. We roughhoused for a little while in the living room, and then watched a bit of TV until M-lady arrived home.

Bud ate a good dinner, and Buster ate a slightly abbreviated one. After dinner there was a little more play time for Buster, and Bud worked on his homework. When Bud had wrapped things up, we all watched an episode of Penguins of Madagascar together before snack time and bed time.

Bud complained of pain on one of his fingers before bed, and we discovered that he'd bitten the nail until the finger had bled a little bit. M-lady tried putting a little of the bad-tasting nail polish on his nails again to remind him not to chew on his nails. Hopefully he can break the habit.

Bud and I read a couple stories before bed, and we turned out the light around 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Back to Routine Again

Buster woke around 6:00, and M-lady got him to go to bed again for a little while. I got up with him around 7:20, and we found Bud awake with the light on in his room, reading the last chapter of The Boxcar Children.

Bud was good about getting dressed and having breakfast after he finished the chapter, and we all headed downstairs for breakfast a bit before 8:00. Buster had a little meltdown during breakfast, however, for no reason I could discern. M-lady eventually convinced him to eat. I took Bud off to school, and the drop off went fine.

I got home around 5:00. Buster was finishing up his bath when I arrived. The kids and I caught up for a little while, and then watched some TV before getting started on dinner. M-lady arrived home as dinner was going onto the table.

We played some Rock Band 3 together after dinner, with Bud taking a quick break to do a few pages of homework. Bud was really interested in singing, and did pretty well even with songs he didn't know very well. He's reading well enough to muddle through the lyrics as they come, now.

M-lady joined us for a few songs, which was nice. Buster apparently got bored on the last song, though, and entertained himself by repeatedly jumping into M-lady's lap while she was trying to play the keyboard. There was a lot of giggling on the last song, and the scores were a little low.

We had a quick snack and started on bedtime after that. I read some books to Buster, we watched a video on my iPhone, and we turned out the light at about 8:15. Buster fell asleep pretty quickly, and both kids have slept quietly so far.

Easy Day

M-lady got up with the kids this morning, and eventually they headed downstairs to have breakfast with the grandparents. The grandparents played with the kids for a little while so M-lady and I could snooze a bit, which was very much appreciated.

About 8:30, I got up and the family. We chatted for a while, and around 10:00 Bud and I took Grandma W and Granddad B to the airport. As Bud and I were pulling away after dropping them off and saying goodbye, Bud said, "I wish they could stay and visit longer." I'd call that the mark of a successful visit.

Bud and I returned home, where we hung out with Buster and watched a little bit of TV before lunch. Everyone ate a good lunch, and afterward I made an attempt to get Buster to nap while Bud practiced piano with M-lady. Buster didn't nap, so after piano practice the kids and I headed outside to play in the front yard and pick some more clementines while M-lady snoozed a little.

We came in around 3:00 and had a snack. M-lady joined us and watched the kids for a bit while I caught a nap. Apparently they had a good time reading together, and Bud went on to read most of The Boxcar Children this afternoon. I enjoyed that book when I was a kid, and he seems to really like it now. It's a jump to a full on chapter book, and he read nearly 100 pages himself today. I still need to verify his comprehension of what he read, though.

After I got up from my nap, Bud and I headed out to pick up some dinner. We brought it home, and everyone ate well. After dinner, the kids and I played a little bit of XBox before taking a shower. After the kids were cleaned up and in PJs, it was time for a snack and the bedtime routine.

I read two chapters of The Boxcar Children to Bud, which left one chapter to go in the book. We turned out the light around 8:30, and Bud fell asleep pretty quickly. I believe Buster dropped off pretty quickly as well, given that he didn't nap today.

Thanks again to Grandma W and Granddad B for helping out this weekend, and watching the kids while we were rehearsing and performing. It was nice to get to spend a little time with you, and the kids really enjoyed the visit.

Spending a Little Time With The Kids

M-lady and I were able to sleep in a little bit this morning, as the kids played with Granddad B and Grandma W. When I finally roused myself and headed downstairs, I found they had covered the dining room floor with floor puzzles. Both kids were having a good time with them.

The kids and I then spent some time showing the grandparents some of the Xbox games we play, and we all played some Rock Band 3 together. The grandparents were impressed with Bud's proficiency on the drums, and Buster's singing skills.

I made waffles for lunch, which everyone enjoyed. After lunch, the kids and grandparents and I all headed to the park for a while, where the kids were able to run around a bit.

We had a snack when we got home. I drove with Grandma W to the theater where we'd be performing in the evening, so she'd know the way when she came with Bud that night. While we were out, the kids watched some TV with Granddad B.

When we got back, I read a story with Bud for a while, and then we took a nap. Bud actually did fall asleep and nap, which was good because he was up late.

M-lady and I took off for the show before Bud woke, and the kids had a standard evening with the grandparents. At about bedtime, Grandma W and Bud came over to the theater and watched our show. They apparently had a great time, and really enjoyed the show. We were able to meet them in the lobby afterward, right before they headed home.

Bud headed for bed on arriving home, getting to sleep some time between 10:30 and 11:00. That's a really late night for him. Hopefully the nap during the day will prevent major damage to his schedule.

Lots of Playtime

M-lady got up with Buster around 6:00 and lay down in his bed with him. He apparently crawled over her repeatedly to get to his water bottle. They eventually got up a little before 7:00.

Bud was up a short time later, and M-lady helped him get dressed and get some breakfast. I came downstairs a bit before 8:00, and found both kids playing vigorously with the grandparents. They had gotten involved in a sword battle pretty quickly. I had to extract Bud to comb his hair and get him out the door for school.

M-lady and I took Bud to school and then headed off for work. Buster played with the grandparents for a bit. Nanny J arrived before too long, and the grandparents had the opportunity to go out and see a local garden before getting some lunch. Buster had his music class before he and Nanny J went to pick Bud up from school.

M-lady and I got home mid-afternoon, and found the kids playing outside. Buster did have a nap in the afternoon, and everyone was having fun playing various ball games. I was able to play with them a little bit before I had to start getting ready for a dance show.

M-lady and I took off around 4:45. The evening apparently went very well for the kids, and they went to bed without problems after a fun evening with the grandparents. Thanks so much to Granddad B and Grandma W for coming out to watch the kids while M-lady and I are in the show!

Arriving Grandparents

Buster woke once around 4:00 this morning, and I was able to put him back to bed pretty quickly. He woke again around 6:30, and never really went back to sleep after that.

I rolled Bud out of bed around 7:30, and he was pretty good about getting dressed and getting breakfast. I took Bud off to school at about 8:15, and he was pretty excited to see his friends again.

Bud had a good day at school, apparently. I picked up Grandma W and Granddad B at the airport at about 1:30, and we were home a short time later. Buster was napping when we arrived home, but Bud was pretty excited to see the grandparents. We hung out in Bud's room for a while, where he showed them his Lego.

I had to work for a bit, during which time Buster woke from his nap. He was a little groggy at first, but warmed up to the grandparents pretty quickly. He was excited to play with them before too long.

M-lady arrived home, and we got started on packing to head out to our dance rehearsal. I went over the evening routine with Grandma W, but assured her the kids were pretty easy going. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and M-lady and I headed out. The kids were having too much fun playing with the grandparents to say goodbye to us.

They had a good time playing, ate good dinners, and watched some TV before snack and bedtime. All in all it sounded like they had a good evening. I expect they'll have a pretty good day tomorrow, too.

One More Day Home

We kept Bud home one more day today. He managed to go the day without a fever, however, so he's headed back to school tomorrow.

The morning was fairly mellow again, since we didn't have to send Bud to school. The kids had some cereal for breakfast, and M-lady headed off for work shortly before Nanny J arrived. I took off for work a short time later.

The kids were having a snack when I got home around 5:00. After saying goodbye to Nanny J, we played a little bit, and I got Bud to work on his homework, which I'd picked up from his school for him. He was pretty good about it, and finished up a week's worth of work today.

Bud had a little bit of a meltdown at snack time, but eventually perked up a bit and we got through the bedtime routine without any trouble. I read a story to him, and we turned out the light around 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Buster took a little longer to fall asleep, and came to crawl into bed with M-lady for a little while before she took him back to his bed.

Work Day At Home

Bud wasn't going to school today, so there wasn't the usual early morning push to get him ready to go. M-lady got up with the kids as they got up, and got them some breakfast. I was able to sleep in until about 8:30. M-lady took off for work then, and I hung out with the kids until Nanny J arrived a few minutes later.

I worked from home today, to keep an eye on Bud. He didn't have a fever when he woke up, and seemed pretty chipper. He played with Buster and Nanny J a bit in the morning, and read some stories to himself, and played Lego. He visited me a few times as well.

I checked his temperature again around 12:30, after lunch, and found he was running a very low fever again (just over 99). I gave him a dose of ibuprofen, and made sure he wasn't uncomfortable. He was just playing and reading, keeping things mellow.

I let Bud play on the Sesame Street website for a while in the afternoon. Around 3:30pm I had to start getting ready for a long rehearsal. M-lady arrived home a short time later, and we were packed up and headed out a little after 4:30. I gave Bud a dose of acetaminophen before we left.

Babysitter D took over from Nanny J around 6:00. Apparently Buster was already in bed at that point. Babysitter D checked on him a few times, and found him not really asleep... I think he was just hiding from Babysitter D. Bud used to do that when he was younger, too.

Babysitter D reported that he and Bud had a good evening together, playing, reading, and watching some TV. Bud got one more dose of medicine before bed, and went to sleep without any trouble. Both kids were sleeping well when we arrived home.

We'll keep Bud home from school for another day, but hopefully he can shake the fever soon.

Not Quite Well Yet

The kids were up fairly early this morning. Buster was up first, and hung out with M-lady while she was on a conference call. We didn't have work today, but M-lady wanted to sit in on a European meeting. Apparently her coworkers were amused by Buster bobbing into the frame occasionally.

Bud got up a short time later, and M-lady took the kids downstairs for breakfast. They came back up a bit later, and I took the kids downstairs to play a bit. Bud showed no indications of feeling bad, and didn't have a fever. I read stories with the kids for a bit, and then snoozed on the couch nearby as they played Legos together for a while.

M-lady joined us again, and Bud and I got dressed. We packed up before too long and headed out to the mall to run a quick errand and get some lunch. The kids were well behaved, and we had a good time wandering for a little while before we headed home.

I got started on outdoor chores when we got home, since the sun had come out and the weather was nice. The kids played around me a bit as I did some work in the backyard and garage, and then went in and played with M-lady while I did some work on the roof. I got the Christmas lights taken down, and picked another five bags of clementines from our tree.

We rested a bit together after that, although it wasn't entirely restful. Around 4:00ish, I got up with the kids and we called Cousin H (LittleRugger) to see if he was available to play some Lego Star Wars with Bud. Cousin H was excited to play, and the boys played together, with a video call, for a while before dinner time.

I made waffles for dinner, and both kids ate pretty well. Bud was showing signs of being tired after dinner, though, so I checked his temperature and discovered he was running a fever again. I gave him a dose of ibuprofen, we did the bath thing, and then a quick snack before bedtime.

Bedtime was pretty early this evening. I was reading to Buster in bed by about 7:20, and we turned the lights out before 8:00. Since Buster had missed his nap, he was asleep pretty quickly. Bud also fell asleep quickly. Hopefully his fever will break for good, but we'll need to keep him home from school tomorrow.

Buster was apparently up briefly around 10:30, but was content to have M-lady tuck him back in. Hopefully he sleeps the rest of the night.

A Bit Sick

Bud woke me up this morning around 6:00 saying his tummy hurt. After some questioning, it seemed like it was actually his abdominal muscles that were sore. I sat with him for a bit, and eventually he fell asleep again.

I got up a bit before 7:00 to get ready for a bike ride, and was out before anyone else was up. The ride was good, and I got home again around 11:00, and found the kids and M-lady having stayed home for the morning. Bud was particularly low energy, so I took his temperature and discovered he was running a low-grade fever. I got him some Tylenol and we laid low for the afternoon.

Bud didn't have much appetite today, so didn't eat much lunch. Buster ate pretty well. We watched some TV and played some Xbox after lunch, and then worked on naps. I read some stories to Bud, and then tucked him in. I then worked on putting Buster down for his nap.

Buster fell asleep after a bit. I'm not sure if Bud fell asleep, but he came and crawled into bed with me a bit later and snoozed for a couple of hours. I got him up around dinner time, and discovered his fever was up a bit. I gave him another dose of Tylenol.

The kids watched some of the Golden Globes with M-lady while I got dinner together. Buster ate a good dinner, and Bud deferred for a bit. After dinner, it was a little bit more TV until snack time. Bud ate a bit then, before we all headed up for bed.

Buster had a bit of a confrontation with M-lady around bedtime, which they ironed out after a bit. Buster is a bit stubborn right now... he is two, after all. Bud and I read a few stories before bedtime, and he crawled into bed and fell asleep pretty quickly. I'll probably get him up soon to check his temperature and have another dose of Tylenol before calling it a night.

Multi-Outing Day

Bud rolled me out of bed around 4:00, but went back to sleep pretty quickly. Buster was up pretty early, too, and M-lady got up with him. I took Buster downstairs for breakfast around 7:15, after which we watched an episode of Sesame Street. Bud joined us as we were watching.

I headed back to bed a little after 9:00, and M-lady was spectacular. She got the kids ready to go, and took them to Happy Hollow, where they met up with Aunt O and Cousin C. I got to sleep in. When I woke, I was sorry I missed the zoo, but glad to catch up on sleep a bit.

The kids had a great time running around, and apparently all played together very well. They were playing out in the front yard when I arrived home from the grocery store, and I hung out with them for a short time before we all came in and had some lunch.

Both kids ate well at lunch. Afterward we played a little bit of Xbox, and then got ourselves together again for another outing, since the weather was so nice. We headed up to the Stanford Mall to wander around a bit. Buster fell asleep on the drive, and was a little groggy at first when we got there. We had a good time wandering around, though.

We took a break to have a treat, and the kids each had a piece of chocolate cake from the bakery at the mall. After they bolted the cake, we wandered a bit more before loading back into the car and coming home. The kids and I watched a little bit of TV while M-lady ran a quick errand, and then I got some dinner ready.

The kids didn't eat much dinner, likely due to excessive snacking during the day. They were also both pretty tired. After refusing dinner, Bud practiced piano for a little while, and then I got both the kids showered. That took us to snack time, where the kids each had an Eggo before we headed for bed. Buster and I read a couple of stories before turning out the light. He was asleep in a few minutes.

Chopstick Test

Bud woke me once around 6:45, but was willing to go back to sleep for a bit. M-lady got up with Buster a short time later, and then both kids crawled into bed with us around 7:30. I got up a few minutes later, got Bud started on getting dressed, and then got breakfast for both the kids.

Bud was ready to head to school in plenty of time, and M-lady dropped him off. I read stories with Buster until Nanny J arrived a few minutes later. They were having a good time playing together when I headed for work.

M-lady came home early in the afternoon to take Bud to a dentist appointment. He got an X-ray to take a look at the progress of his adult teeth: it looks like we can start expecting his baby teeth to begin coming out in about a year. His checkup went well overall.

A bit later in the afternoon, M-lady took Bud to his piano lesson, which also went well. I arrived home around 5:00, and after dropping my stuff and saying goodbye to Nanny J, Buster and I fired up Rock Band 3 and played together for a bit.

M-lady and Bud arrived home with sushi for dinner after a while. I pulled out my P10 gift exchange gift, which was a set of lightsaber chopsticks, and after getting them out of the package and washing them, Bud took the responsibility of distributing the four sets among family members. Buster got the green Yoda set, since they were a little shorter. M-lady got the Darth Maul set, since they were red. Bud took Mace Windu, and I got Luke.

The chop sticks worked pretty well. The kids enjoyed using them, although they mostly ate with their fingers. Sadly, the chopsticks don't work for cutting sushi quite as well as the kids had hoped.

After dinner, we watched a little bit of TV before snack time and bed time. The kids were up just a little bit later than usual. I read stories with Bud until about 8:45, and he fell asleep pretty quickly once we turned out the light.

New Big Boy Bed

Buster was up a little early this morning, and I rolled Bud out of bed a little after 7:30. He was pretty good about getting ready for school, and M-lady headed out with him around 8:15. Buster and I hung out together until Nanny J arrived.

The cleaners arrived a short time later, and Nanny J took Buster out for an outing. I worked from home today, so I was holed up in the office for most of the day. Nanny J and Buster walked over to Bud's school to pick him up around noon, but apparently got caught in a heavy downpour that struck as they were coming back. The kids came in a bit wet and very excited and giggly. I helped towel them off before lunch.

Buster had a solid nap in the afternoon, and Bud hung out with me a little bit as I worked. I set him up with a spreadsheet on my computer, with a small 10x10 grid where he filled in the sums of the numbers in the rows and columns (that is, he entered '13' in the 8th row, 5th column). He filled out the whole grid, and we talked about the patterns in the grid, and then printed it out when he was done for reference.

M-lady arrived home around 5:00, and a few minutes later Buster's new bed was delivered. The bed delivery service took his old mattress away, so Buster had a big new bed with a frame, box spring, and everything. He was really excited, and kept wanting me to come see his new bed.

Unfortunately, M-lady and I had to run to a dance rehearsal. Babysitter D arrived a bit later and took over for Nanny J. Buster decided to disengage a short time later, and asked to be put to bed really early. Bud and Babysitter D had a good time, though. Both kids were sleeping peacefully when M-lady and I got home.

Up Early

Bud was up around 7:00 this morning, asking for breakfast, and M-lady got up with him. Buster was up a short time later, and M-lady got him dressed as well. I got up around 7:45 to get Buster some breakfast. Bud was already dressed and mostly ready to go to school, so I just needed to remind him to use the bathroom before he and M-lady took off.

Buster and I read stories in his room together until Nanny J arrived. I was able to pack up and head off to work in short order.

I got home around 5:00, and found the kids had had a good day. Buster had been to gymnastics class, and had apparently done pretty well. Bud had his class group photo at school today, and is starting to report a little more about school when asked.

We played together, had a bit of a sword fight, and watched a little TV after Nanny J left. I got some dinner together for the kids a bit after 6:00, and we were eating when M-lady arrived home. She had dinner after settling in, and we all watched a few minutes of TV together.

Bud practiced piano before snack time, and then we all headed upstairs to get ready for bed. M-lady got Buster into PJs while I supervised Bud, and then we switched assignments. Buster and I read stories and watched a video before turning out the light. Buster fell asleep before too long, although he got a few kicks in as I lay in bed next to him before passing out entirely.

Low Contact Day

I rolled Bud out of bed around 7:30, as usual, and nagged him a bit until he got dressed and we headed downstairs for breakfast. I managed to get him ready for school, and then needed to rush to get myself ready to go. We made it about a minute before the door opened, and he headed off to class.

I got home around 5:00, and M-lady was home a short time later. We were able to have some of the evening with the kids before we had to start getting ready for a dance rehearsal. The kids ate a pretty good dinner, and I got to watch a little TV and play some Rock Band with them.

Babysitter D arrived around 7:00. Buster was a little upset when he arrived, but brightened up when I put on an episode of Sesame Street for them. They were happily engaged when we left.

The kids had gone to bed without much trouble for Babysitter D, and slept well through the evening.

Hidden Blankey

Bud was a little slow getting ready this morning. I started getting Bud out of bed around 7:30, but didn't actually manage to get him dressed until about 7:45. We headed down for breakfast about ten minutes later. He was reasonably quick after that, and we were out the door in time to get him to school. Buster got up around the time we were leaving.

It was pretty cold out this morning (a bit below 40), so Bud was wearing two jackets. The other kids were similarly bundled up as we waited for the classroom to open. Bud trundled off into class when the door opened, and apparently had a very good day.

I got home around 5:00. The kids seem to have had a good day, although Nanny J reported that before Buster's nap there was a housewide search for his blankey. Apparently he'd stuffed it into a hidden compartment in his little ride-on push car, and they went through the house several times before they found it.

The kids seemed excited to see me, and we played a little bit together after Nanny J left. We settled in front of the TV before too long, and watched some shows together. M-lady arrived home a short time later with her dress maker, and busied herself with a fitting.

The kids and I played a little bit of Rock Band before getting some dinner. M-lady arrived home after dropping off the dress maker again while we were eating. Bud ate really well, and Buster deferred.

Bud practiced piano after dinner, while I played with Buster a little bit. That led to snack time, where both kids had modest snacks. I helped Buster into his PJs, and then read stories with Bud before bedtime. We turned out the light around 8:30, and Bud was asleep within about ten minutes.

Beginning The Harvest

I got up early this morning, around 6:45, to get ready to go to a bike race. Bud was up around 7:00 using the bathroom, but I believe he headed back to bed. No one else was up when I left around 7:15.

M-lady took care of the kids in the morning, and they made an outing to Costco mid morning. I got back home around 11:00, and they were still out. Apparently the kids had a great time with all the samples: they had five different snacks during the outing, I believe.

They got back just as I was getting out of the shower, and we got some lunch. The kids ate pretty well, and after lunch I played a little bit of Lego Indiana Jones with them. After resting a bit, I decided it was time to head outside again.

It was pretty cold today (for the area), with the high in the upper 40's, so we bundled up a bit before heading out. I got the ladder out, and started the task of harvesting the clementines on the tree just outside our front door. It bears hundreds of fruits each winter, and it takes ladder work, clambering about on the roof, and using a tree pruner on a stick to get most of them down. I got started on the ladder today, and picked three buckets full while the kids played in the front yard.

The kids had a good time running around, but by about 3:30 we were all getting a little chilly. We came back inside for a snack (clementines, of course).

I snoozed for a little while as M-lady played with the kids. Around 4:30, I joined them again, and we played some Xbox Kinect games together until dinner time. We tried out the new pancake molds the kids had gotten at the party last night, with fair to middlin' results. It's going to take a little bit of practice to turn out well-formed pancakes. And a flatter griddle surface.

The kids ate a good dinner, and we watched a little TV before Bud practiced piano with M-lady. After piano practice (during which time Buster had a minor meltdown), I got the kids into the shower, where we all had a good time.

The kids were in PJs after their shower, and we just had time for a snack and bed. I read some stories with Buster, and we turned out the light around 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster woke once briefly around 10:30, but went back to sleep again without too much trouble.

Annual Reunion

M-lady got up with Buster around 6:00 this morning, and managed to get back to bed before too long. I snoozed with Buster in his bed from about 7:15 to 8:00, at which point I got up with the boys and took them downstairs for breakfast. We started an episode of Sesame Street after eating.

M-lady spelled me about halfway through the show, and I managed to snooze for another 45 minutes or so. I got up and got dressed, and started working on a gift. We have a group of friends, dubbed "P10", and each year we get together and exchange gifts. I drew Friend R this year, and was working on a project for him which took me most of the day.

The kids were corralled by M-lady before too long, and she took them off to run a couple errands and hit the library. They came back with lunch, as well as a new record of 25 library books. Bud is going through them pretty quickly now.

We had a nice lunch, and then the kids watched some videos on the computer over my shoulder while I worked on the project. I wrapped up in time to help get the kids ready to go, and get myself dressed. We were all in the car a few minutes after 4:00.

We had a hour and twenty minute drive to the gathering, held in a remote restaurant in the north bay where we'd first gathered about 15 years ago. Buster fell asleep on the way. Bud was excited as we crossed the Golden Gate bridge, even though we were fairly fogbound. When we arrived, we took our stuff inside, and Buster came awake very slowly.

Buster was grumpy until we started eating, a bit later. The company was fine, the meal was excellent, and the kids enjoyed themselves. The kids each got a giant piece of chocolate cake for dessert, and then they made out pretty well during the gift exchange, as many of the folks get gifts for all the kids.

It was a late night, however, and we weren't on the road for home until about 9:30. Buster was upset when I took his iPhone from him in the car so he could go to sleep, but both kids passed out within a few minutes of hitting the road. We were able to get them into their beds as soon as we got home, where they have been sleeping peacefully.

Playdate

Conner was up, but wasn't hard to put back to bed during the night. The school morning routine wasn't too bad, as Bud was pretty cooperative about going to school. M-lady dropped him off while I hung out with Buster.

M-lady got home earlier in the afternoon today, as Bud had a play date with his friend D from school. They had a good time together all afternoon, although I didn't get the scoop from him on what they played. D's mother picked him up around the time M-lady took Bud off to his piano lesson.

Bud did pretty well in his lesson. I arrived home around 5:00, while they were out, and hung out with Buster after Nanny J took her leave. We played some Rock Band 3 together before M-lady and Bud returned.

When they got back, we had some dinner. The kids ate well, and we played some Kinectimals after dinner. Bud had a minor meltdown before bedtime, but by the time we were actually getting ready for bed, he was in good spirits again.

I read some stories with Buster, and we turned out the light a little late, around 8:40. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Sneaking Out

Buster was up briefly at 5:00 this morning, and I put him back to bed. He's no longer trying to crawl in bed with us when he wakes up... he just gets our attention, and then heads back to his bed, expecting one of us to follow him. I sat with him for a few minutes before coming back to my own bed.

He was up again at about 6:00, and M-lady went and slept with him until she got up around 7:30. I rolled Bud out of bed around the same time, and Buster got himself up around 8:00.

Bud was again a little slow getting ready this morning, but eventually ate breakfast and was ready to go by the time M-lady was. I got Buster dressed and fed, and we played and colored together a little bit before Nanny J arrived.

The kids seemed to have a good day. I arrived home around 5:00, and M-lady arrived a few minutes later. We got ourselves out of our work clothes and into dance clothes, and headed out again a little before 6:00. Nanny J fed dinner to the kids, who seemed unusually excited about dinner.

Babysitted D arrived around 6:00, and Nanny J handed the kids off to him after they'd finished up dinner. The kids apparently had a good evening playing with Babysitter D.

The kids were asleep when we got home. The babysitter reported that Buster had snuck out of his room repeatedly, and would scurry back when Babysitter D found him. Eventually Babysitter D sat with Buster in his room, and Buster fell asleep. We'll see how long he sleeps through the night.

Staying In Bed

Buster slept pretty well after he finally fell asleep, and didn't get out of bed until nearly 6:00, at which point M-lady went to sleep with him for a bit. I went to wake M-lady at 7:30 or so, and Buster was awake and grinning happily. I got him dressed and ready while M-lady got up.

Bud was a little slow getting up, but not as grumpy this morning. He got dressed and we all had breakfast shortly after 8:00. Bud's not eating much breakfast, but it hasn't seemed to be very detrimental.

M-lady took Bud to school, and I played with Buster until Nanny J arrived. We discovered that Sesame Street has a very well put together website for iPhone, with lots of videos available.

The kids again seem to have had a good day. Nanny J made an effort to get Buster to take his nap earlier in the afternoon, in the hope that he'd be a little more fatigued in the evening and go to sleep a little more quickly.

I got home around 5:00, and dropped my stuff before playing with the kids a little bit. We played pirates for a little while before playing some Xbox together.

M-lady arrived home a short time later, and we got some dinner together. Bud worked on homework, and we had time afterward to watch some Bob the Builder before snacktime and bedtime. I helped Bud into PJs.

Friend A arrived to babysit the kids while M-lady and I were going out to dance rehearsal. I put Buster to bed after we said Hello to Friend A, and we read a story and watched a couple of short videos on the iPhone. I told Buster we were going out, and Friend A would be there, and wished him goodnight. Both kids apparently both went to sleep on their own, and have been sleeping soundly all evening. We'll see how long Buster stays in bed tonight.

Singing Attempt

Buster crawled in bed with us at about 3:00 in the morning. He was still mostly alseep, so I shoveled him off the bed are carried him back to his bed. I slept with him for about an hour before getting back to my own bed. He stayed put the rest of the night.

Bud was a little tough to get out of bed this morning, and then dragged his feet all morning while I was prompting him to get ready for school. He was ready on time, though, and M-lady took him to school at about 8:20. Buster was up earlier than I expected, around 8:00, and seemed pretty chipper. I got him some breakfast, and we played together until Nanny J arrived at 8:45.

The kids seem to have had a good day, and were playing in the living room when I got home. They'd constructed a fort out of furniture and foam blocks which I was immediately invited inside. After we said goodbye to Nanny J, we played a bit more before M-lady arrived home.

I watched a little TV and played Xbox with the kids before dinner. The kids both declined to eat dinner, so Bud got started on his homework and piano practice instead. We had time to play a little bit of Rock Band 3 together before snack time. Bud opted to sing for the first time, and got a 100% on Bon Jovi's You Give Love a Bad Name on his first try. It's one of his favorite songs, even though he doesn't quite have all the words.

At snack time both the kids ate their dinners. I helped Bud get into PJs after that, and we read a story before bed. The lights went out around 8:40, and Bud fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster's been quiet, too, so hopefully he'll sleep well tonight.

Exciting New Freedom

Buster slept pretty well for the first night on his new mattress. He woke around 5:00am and crawled in bed with us. Going forward I think we need to try and tuck him back into his bed so he doesn't make a habit of joining us at 5:00 each morning.

I rolled Bud out of bed around 7:30, and we did a standard morning school routine. Buster was still asleep when Bud and I headed for school around 8:15. The dropoff went fine, and Bud was excited to get back to class and see his friends.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I got back home a little after 5:00, and found the kids playing together in the living room. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and read some stories together before setting up in front of the TV to watch some Animusic and play some Xbox.

M-lady was working with her dressmaker again this evening. The kids said a cautious hello to the dressmaker, and then got back to playing. I got dinner for the kids around 6:30, and we played a bit more until M-lady got home again a bit after 7:00. M-lady took care of getting the kids a snack, and I helped put Buster to bed.

Buster took a nap today, and was much less interested in going to sleep tonight. He was dozey but still awake when I left him in his room a little after 9:00. M-lady and I went downstairs to watch the Orange Bowl (Go Cardinal!) off the DVR.

At about 10:15, Buster came downstairs full of giggles. I guess he had slept for a little while, and woken up, and was thrilled to be able to come and join us. M-lady took him back upstairs, where he ran around and giggled some more before falling asleep again some time after 11:30. I suspect he'll sleep in again tomorrow.

Like a Whole New Room

Bud was up a bit before 8:00 again this morning, and M-lady got up with him and took him downstairs to get some breakfast. A bit after 8:00, Buster woke and called out. I got him up and got him dressed, and then sent him downstairs to join Bud and M-lady, where he also had some breakfast.

M-lady came back to bed around 9:00, and after blinking a bit I got up and got myself dressed. I got started fairly quickly on getting all of Buster's stuff (less the crib) back into his room. I got most of it in, including the mattress he'll be sleeping on, and finished up with the futon with M-lady's help when she got up. Buster seemed pretty excited to have his room back, and both kids were bouncing on the mattress.

M-lady ran out to run some errands a bit later in the morning. I had lunch with Buster pretty early, around 11:20. Bud joined us a bit later, and I got a sandwich for him. After lunch, the kids and I played a little bit of Lego Indiana Jones until M-lady arrived home. After she'd had some lunch, we got started on deconstructing the Christmas tree. Bud and Buster took a number of ornaments off the tree, and M-lady packed them away. The kids were a bit faster taking ornaments off than M-lady was at packing them, so they spent some time playing 'Pirates' rather dangerously close to some of the fragile ornaments.

We managed to get the tree out of the house without too much incident, and things were cleaned up by early evening. The kids were excited to reclaim that corner of the living room.

M-lady took Buster out to do a quick grocery run in the early evening. They got rained on as they came out of the store, which Buster thought very entertaining.

M-lady made some dinner while I played with the kids, and we all ate well. After dinner, I gave the kids a shower, which led to snack time and bed time. Buster was pretty excited to sleep on his new bed. I read stories to Bud, and he fell asleep pretty quickly after we turned out the light around 8:30.

It's been a fabulous vacation, and I think we're all looking forward to getting a little bit back to routine next week.

Starting Off a New Year

Buster woke once during the night, but was soothed pretty quickly. He didn't seem to have any other trouble sleeping in Bud's room. Bud was up this morning at 7:30, which was good. I got up with him and got him some breakfast, and we were roughly ready to go shortly after 8:00. This bodes well for getting back on schedule for school in a couple of days.

We sat down and watched a bunch of the Tournament of Roses Parade, which Bud really seemed to enjoy. Buster joined us a little later, and I got some breakfast for him. While my back was turned, he managed to drop his bowl of oatmeal on the floor, which was pretty unusual for him. I gather he was trying to retrieve a small kernel of popcorn he found in his bib.

I got back into bed a bit after 9:00, and M-lady joined the kids. They apparently had a good time working on thank you notes. Bud was able to write quite a bit of them this year.

I got up and started working on finishing up the carpeting in Buster's room. The kids were in and out, and Bud in particular wanted to help. I was able to have him hold things for me, and hand me tools as I needed them.

We took a break for lunch a bit before 1:00 and made omelets. The kids ate well, and after lunch we had a nice video chat with Grandma W. The kids had fun chatting with her a bit, and wished her a Happy New Year.

I worked on the carpeting for the remainder of the afternoon, and the kids helped with M-lady on a choreography that we've been working on. They came to show me their dancing a bit later.

I finished the carpeting job before dinner, which was a fairly quick affair. After dinner we loaded up in the car and headed over to Friend J's annual New Year's Day party, which was very pleasant. There were a couple of other young kids, but the boys sat and ate a bit with me before socializing. They had fun running around a little bit, and then watched a Backyardigans on my iPhone as M-lady and I chatted a bit.

We got home at about 8:00, and the kids got ready for bed straight away. Buster slept in Bud's room again, which didn't pose any problems at all. We read them a couple of stories, and the kids fell asleep pretty quickly.
