Call and Response

The kids were up a bit before 7:30 today, and M-lady was the first riser with them. I got up a few minutes later to help Bud get dressed, and get the kids going on breakfast. Bud was actually ready to go to school about 10 minutes ahead of schedule, which is a little unusual, but we all got to hang out a bit before he and M-lady took off. Buster and I read books together until Nanny J arrived and I got ready for work.

Buster was a little upset that he wasn't going to work with me this morning, but I managed to get out the door.

The kids seem to have had a good day. Bud was allowed to make some crafts today with Elmer's Glue, and did a pretty good job of keeping things tidy. He showed me a butterfly image he'd made with the glue by putting it on a piece of construction paper and folding the paper in half, and then opening it up (like a Rorschach). He'd labeled it as well with "BUDRFLI". I think it's fantastic that he's figuring out how to spell words on his own.

The kids and I watched a little TV and played some Lego Star Wars after I got home. We started on dinner around 6:00, and Buster started up a call and response that Bud has been doing since watching High School Musical 3.
Buster: "What team?"
Bud responded with: "Wildcats! What team?"
Buster: "Wildcats! What team?"
repeat....

The kids ended up eating a somewhat haphazard dinner, as I promised them quesadillas and then discovered we didn't have any tortillas. They ended up eating pretty well, though, and M-lady arrived home as we were eating.

We all played together for a while in the living room after dinner. Buster enjoyed looking at pictures on the iPhone for a bit, and found a short video of himself giggling, which caused him to giggle. He watched that one over and over, laughing more and more.

Snacktime and bedtime came up before too long, and Bud was a little slow getting ready for bed. We read some stories, and the lights were out around 8:15. He was still tossing and turning around 9:00, though I believe he fell asleep pretty quickly after that.

Straw Play

Buster usually calls out for some company about an hour before it's time to get up, and once someone sits with him he'll go back to sleep for an hour or so. M-lady has been generally handling that duty, but I got up with Buster this morning and snoozed with him for about an hour.

The kids ended up getting up a little later than usual, and we headed down for breakfast around 8:30. The kids finished up our current supply of oatmeal, and were wrapped up with breakfast when Nanny J arrived.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I arrived home around 5:00, and the kids for whatever reason immediately started making requests for chips. Buster was ignoring the banana Nanny J had prepared for him, hoping I'd get them some chips. I managed to defer, and they forgot about the chips.

Bud did find our stash of bendy straws, and requested one to play with. Buster, of course, got one too. Bud's straw was neon yellow, and Buster's neon green, but they ended up not being used as lightsabers. Bud pretended to be using dynamite to excavate a tunnel, and the straw was a snorkel/breathing apparatus.

We played for a while, and then watched a little TV, and then played a little bit of Lego Star Wars before M-lady arrived home and we got started on dinner. Bud did his usual minor meltdown before dinner, but joined us shortly after the meltdown passed. Both kids ate really solid dinners, and we watched a little bit of Little Einsteins before having a snack and starting the bedtime routine.

Buster was really good about getting into PJ's and watching a few videos, but didn't want to call it a night and finally turn the light out. M-lady has apparently taken to singing to him to transition to going to sleep, and I gave it a shot tonight with much success.

Late Getting Home

The kids slept in pretty late this morning, and I spent some time trying to rouse Bud at about 7:45. Eventually he got up, got himself dressed, and we headed down to breakfast. Buster was in tow by that point.

The kids each ate two bowls of oatmeal, and Bud got himself ready to head off to school shortly after that. I played with Buster for a short time before Nanny J arrived. Buster seemed excited to play with her.

I was heading for work just as Bud got home from school. I waved to them as I left, and they waved back.

M-lady got home in time to relieve Nanny J, as I was stuck at work for a bit. The boys and M-lady had a pleasant evening together, playing games and watching a little bit of TV. I arrived home after dinner, and was able to watch a few minutes of TV with them before we started snack time and the bed time routine.

Bud was reasonably cooperative about going to bed, and was in bed with the lights out around 8:05. He was asleep a few minutes later. Buster took a little longer to fall asleep, but both kids have slept quietly so far.

Ball Retrieval

M-lady again handled the early morning kid watching, and I joined a bit after 8:00. I took the kids downstairs around breakfast time, and watched Buster eat two bowls of oatmeal, half of M-lady's bagel, and a small bowl of cereal. He was apparently a bit hungry.

M-lady took off for ballet a short time later, and I played with the kids for a little while before we sat down to watch some TV. Eventually I got myself and Bud motivated, and we headed upstairs to get dressed, with Buster following along behind.

After getting dressed, the three of us played in the office for a bit, playing with Lego and checking out some videos on the PC. Around noon we headed back downstairs to get some lunch. M-lady arrived home in time to join us, and while Bud ate a pretty big lunch, Buster didn't inhale quite as much food.

After lunch I enjoyed some reading time with both kids. We sat on Bud's bed, and Bud and I read the story with Buster looking on. It lasted longer than I expected it to.

After putting Buster down for his nap, I headed out to run some errands while Bud hung out with M-lady. They apparently watched some of our old dance videos, and Bud told me about them when I got back, just before Buster woke. I took Bud and Buster outside with me for a bit, and we had a lot of fun playing with bubbles before I decided it was time to come in and start working on dinner.

The kids ate solid dinners, and we played together a bit after dinner. Bud had put several of the big foam pieces into the tree-tent, and Buster discovered that he could get a ball off the flat top of the tent which he'd thrown up there by climbing up the foam blocks and punching the top of the tent. Bud does this all the time, as getting a ball onto the top of the tent has been our basketball goal for a while.

Buster was so excited about being able to retrieve a ball that he spent something like forty minutes throwing a ball up and then getting it back down. The first time he managed to get the ball down, he ran up to me clutching the ball and saying, "Did it! Did it!" He was pretty proud of himself.

Bud and I watched a few minutes of TV before getting a snack and starting the bedtime routine. I got Buster into his PJs and we watched a few videos before turning out the lights. Buster fell asleep pretty quickly. M-lady and Bud apparently talked biology for a while after the light was turned out, and Bud fell asleep a short time later. Both kids have slept quietly this evening.

Return To Happy Hollow

M-lady got up with the kids this morning, although I'm getting close to feeling normal again. I joined them around 8:30, and we all got ready to go to Happy Hollow. The zoo and park has been closed for almost two years for renovations, and opened again a couple weeks ago. We were excited to take Bud back, and have the opportunity to start taking Buster.

Since the park has just re-opened, it was pretty busy. We got there a few minutes before 10:00, and there was a pretty long line waiting to get in. Fortunately, when the line started moving, most folks were getting day passes, and we decided to jump the line and get a family membership.

We visited the old zoo first, and found about half the animals were missing. The park had definitely been upgraded a bit though, and the kids enjoyed seeing the animals that were still there. Buster particularly liked the meerkats and some of the lemurs.

We headed to the park section next, which had been almost entirely remade. We skipped the rides, which had long lines, but the kids had a great time playing on a huge play structure. I followed Buster around for a bit, and we did most of the major parts of the structure. After the kids had run around a bit, we did a tour of the rest of the park, and then had some lunch.

The kids ate well, and afterward we started heading for the exit. On the way out, we found the 'new zoo', which had brand new enclosures for the animals which we'd missed in the old zoo. We looked in on the new petting zoo, but didn't go in, and enjoyed seeing the other animals as well.

We headed home a bit before 1:00, expecting Buster to fall asleep in the car as Bud always used to do. Buster was fine, though, and excited to play at home. We hung out for a short time before I put him down for his nap.

Bud and I hung out for a bit together as Buster napped, and then got a snack and headed outside a short time after Buster woke up. M-lady headed out to pick up groceries, and we had a good time playing with bubbles and sweeping up the garage. We headed back inside a little after 5:00, and were just settling in when M-lady arrived home again.

We had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese before dinner, and both kids participated a bit. After chatting for a bit, we wrapped up and had a great dinner which M-lady prepared. After dinner M-lady played with the kids for a little while before bath time, and I got Bud cleaned up while M-lady bathed Buster.

Buster decided to forgo his snack, but Bud and I headed downstairs for a snack before coming back up and getting ready for bed. Bud protested going to bed (as he does every night), but was asleep within a few minutes of the lights being turned out. Both kids have slept well so far, although Bud had been coughing a little bit (he seems to have a cold, too).

Another Sport

M-lady handled the kids this morning again, which was nice. I got up to help out with breakfast, and Bud was ready to go to school by about 8:15. Buster finished up breakfast a short time later, and we played together a little bit before Nanny J arrived.

I worked from home again today, and was able to say hello to Bud when he got home right before I headed out to PT. Bud was busy playing with his Lego, and Buster was napping, when I got back.

The kids had their baths in the afternoon, and Nanny J took her leave around 5:15. The kids and I played for a little while before M-lady got home. As Bud and I tossed a ball back and forth, we began discussing volleyball, and I showed Bud how to pass. He worked on that for a bit, and started getting the hang of it before we headed out to pick up a pizza for dinner.

Buster wanted to come, too, so the three of us got the pizza. Both kids ate pretty well when we got back home, and after dinner we watched an episode of MythBusters. Then came snack and bedtime.

The kids got to bed a little bit late, since I started snack time a little late. Buster was pretty good about going to bed, although he woke and had trouble getting back to sleep for a while around 10:00ish.

Word Games

M-lady got up with Buster this morning, and they apparently read a lot of stories together before she got him dressed. Bud was again up a bit late, possibly due to the cold he seems to be getting over. He was dressed before we headed down for breakfast around 8:30, though.

Nanny J arrived as the kids were having breakfast, and I headed upstairs to work a bit. Nanny J took the kids to the library this morning, where they apparently had a pretty good time. They listened to a story at circle time, and got to run around the fountains out in front of the library a bit before coming home around lunchtime.

Buster had a solid nap, and they headed off to Bud's sports class in the mid afternoon, where Bud got to play street hockey. After sports class, they came home and had baths and snacks before I headed downstairs and we said goodbye to Nanny J.

We played a little bit before watching some TV together. M-lady arrived home a little later, and prepared dinner a bit after 6:00. The kids ate pretty well. I nodded off a little bit after dinner while we were playing in the living room together, while Bud started conducting experiments based on the MythBusters show we'd watched, with Elmo filling in the role of 'crash test dummy'.

M-lady was discussing with Bud possibilities for pictures for his class. This week he needs to provide a small picture of something that starts with the letter 'X'. Bus suggests 'X-ray' and 'Xylophone', and then Buster contributed 'XBox'. Way to go, Buster.

The bedtime routine was pretty standard. Bud was good about going to bed a little bit early, and fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster woke once with a night terror, but went back to sleep pretty quickly.

Highchair Rejection

Bud wasn't interested in getting up to go to school this morning, so I had to wrangle him into his clothes and downstairs for breakfast. He requested a quesadilla for breakfast, but since they're pretty quick to throw together, I made one for him. Buster got a piece, too.

M-lady took Bud to school, and I played with Buster for a little while before Nanny J arrived. I then packed up and headed off to work.

The kids apparently had a pretty good day, and were all set to see M-lady and I when we got home around 5:00. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and then packed up and headed off to Red Robin for dinner, which was having a fundraiser for Bud's preschool. We got there pretty early, so it wasn't crowded yet.

Buster wanted to sit next to me in the booth rather than in his usual highchair, so we let him sit there on the conjecture that we'd move him into his highchair when the food arrived. He was having none of it, so we swapped the highchair for a booster, which Buster seemed very content with. I think we may be done with highchairs when we go out... I'm not sure when we'll be replacing our highchair at home.

The kids both ate pretty well, and Bud got to see some of his friends and teachers on the way out. We watched a little bit of TV when we got home, and then had some ice cream and started getting ready for bed. Buster wanted a pretty big snack, so didn't get to bed until a bit after 8:00. We watched a few videos on my iPhone, since my voice is still pretty shot from the cold I'm surviving, and Buster was fairly content by the time we turned out the light. M-lady didn't have any trouble getting Bud into bed.

Micro-Indy

M-lady once again took care of the kids this morning, which was very much appreciated as I recover from my cold. I rousted myself around 8:30, and got started on breakfast with the kids as Nanny J arrived.

Buster apparently didn't eat much today during the day. Both kids occasionally wandered into the bedroom where I was working again, and would chat or take a look at what I was up to on the computer. Bud would wander off again of his own accord pretty quickly, and Buster was usually quickly enticed away by Nanny J.

Buster has taken to wearing Bud's child-sized Indiana Jones hat, which Bud wears his small adult-sized hat. So we have two little adventurers running around: Mini-Indy and Micro-Indy.

Nanny J took her leave after 5:00, after the kids had their baths. The kids preferred to hang out upstairs and play with Lego, so we sat in the office together for a while. I eventually started an episode of Bob The Builder on the computer, which they enjoyed until M-lady arrived home.

Both kids ate pretty well at dinner, and we watched the end of Bud's DVD from the library afterward. The kids had some ice cream for dessert, and we all headed upstairs to start the bedtime routine. Bud and I looked at a Star Wars art book, and turned out the light a bit after 8:00. Bud tossed and turned for a while, and fell asleep a little after 9:00. Buster fell asleep a bit more quickly.

A Couple of Haircuts

I've managed to come down with a bit of a cold, and M-lady was nice enough to take care of the boys this morning. I got up around 8:00 for a little while, but headed back to bed before too long. The kids were pretty well behaved.

Bud didn't have school again today, so Nanny J took the kids out to get haircuts, which they've needed for a while. They got home shortly before lunchtime, sporting much more aerodynamic hairdos. Bud would occasionally touch the back of his neck all throughout the rest of the day, feeling the short, fuzzy hair there.

The kids had baths immediately after lunch to get rid of any extra bits of hair. Buster had a solid nap, and Bud spent a good chunk of the afternoon playing with his Lego. I spent most of the day working from bed, and the kids would wander in occasionally to visit. Buster would clamber up on the bed and sit next to me, asking to see a video on my laptop, before Nanny J would entice him away with another activity.

Nanny J took off a little after 5:00, and we sat down to watch a little bit of TV before M-lady came home. The kids had both been snacking on baby carrots, and Buster would occasionally lose a couple of small bits onto the floor, so I was on carrot patrol for a little while. M-lady got dinner together when she arrived home, and the kids ate pretty well.

They watched a DVD which Bud had gotten from the library about the planets until snack time, and then had a snack and we headed for bed. Buster was pretty agreeable about going to bed, and requested his new Cars pajamas. I'm not sure we can wash those PJs every day, though. Both kids went to sleep without much trouble.

Another Long Nap

M-lady handled getting up with the kids first this morning, and eventually both kids and M-lady got into our bed shortly after 9:00. I got up and took the kids downstairs to get some breakfast.

M-lady headed out to her ballet class, and I watched a little bit of TV with the kids, and then we spent some time playing with Bud's marble run toy. Bud had the last turkey sandwich for lunch, and Buster and I had hotdogs. After lunch, we were playing a little more when M-lady arrived home.

Shortly after 1:00 I was able to put Buster down for his nap. Bud spent the time playing with Lego with M-lady. I joined them a bit later, and took Bud out to the Container Store to pick up some bins to put his Lego in. All we need to do now is figure out how he wants to sort it: by set, by color, by piece shape/size, or something else.

I played with Bud for a bit outside after we got home, and we had fun playing catch with the lacrosse sticks again. Bud got hit a few times by erratic ball bounces, but didn't seem to mind too much. We headed inside after 4:00, as Buster was just getting up from another three-hour nap.

Before dinner time, we had a nice video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Both kids got engaged, and had fun interacting with the grandparents. It's been too long since we've seen them, so it was nice to chat.

M-lady made dinner, and the kids ate pretty well. After Bud and I had finished eating, we jetted off to do the grocery shopping. Bud had a good time in the store, and helped out with carrying one of the bags on the way home. We arrived at home in time to get a shower, a snack, and head for bed.

Bud and I read one of his library books at bedtime. Bud's reading skills seem to grow daily, and he's reading stuff that seems pretty tough. We had a good time before bed, and he went to sleep pretty easily. He doesn't have school again tomorrow for the continued parent-teacher conferences, so there's no rush to get him up in the morning.

Turkey Sandwiches

I got up around 7:00, and rolled Bud out of bed so he could come with me to PT this morning. Buster woke as we were headed out, and M-lady hung out with him this morning while we were at PT.

Bud was excited to go, and seemed to enjoy seeing what I do at PT. He got to do some of the exercises with me, too. Towards the end of the session I had ice and electro-stim on my knee, which took a bit of explaining.

We arrived home around 9:30, and found Buster and M-lady having some breakfast. I sat down and watched an episode of Blue's Clues with the kids while M-lady snoozed for a bit. We played a while, and then I took a nap while M-lady took the kids out to Target.

They came and rousted me a little before noon, and we all hung out together in our bed for a few minutes before I got up and moved the kids downstairs towards lunch. The kids insisted on turkey sandwiches, and Bud ate a sandwich and a half. He later had another whole turkey sandwich for a snack. I guess it was just a turkey sandwich kind of day.

I played with the kids for a little while after lunch, and then took Buster upstairs for a nap. He fell asleep pretty quickly. While he was going down for his nap, M-lady took Bud to the library, where they picked out a whole bunch of new books for him to work on his reading, which continues to improve.

Buster ended up sleeping for more than three hours. I played with Bud outside for a bit when they returned from the library, including some time with stomp rockets and playing catch with the lacrosse sticks. After we came inside, we watched a little bit of TV before heading out to pick up some dinner while Buster was still waking up.

We all ate a solid dinner on Bud's and my return, and after dinner we decided to take advantage of the late light and nice day and head out to a park. We drove to a slightly farther away park, and were fortunate enough to run into one of Bud's classmates and his family. Everyone had a good time at the park.

We headed back home at about 7:00, and had a few minutes of playtime before starting on snacks and getting ready for bed. Buster was pretty good about getting ready for bed, and I managed to get him into some newer lightweight pajamas (with Lightning McQueen on them). He took a long time to put to bed, though, and wasn't asleep until about 9:00. Bud was in bed a little earlier, and probably fell asleep earlier as well, after a pretty busy day.

Heading Down

Buster was again up around 7:00ish, but willing to go back to sleep for a bit. He called out for M-lady again at about 7:45, and I went to soothe him unsuccessfully. It seems he really did want Mommy. M-lady and I switched places, and I hung out with Bud for a bit while she sat with Buster.

Bud and I got dressed a little after 8:00, and I got Bud some breakfast. Buster was content hanging out in his crib while the rest of us got ready, and was running around half-dressed when Nanny J arrived. Bud didn't have school today, and instead M-lady and I headed off to a parent-teacher conference for him.

The conference was fine, and Bud is doing well in school and is ready for kindergarten. He's blossomed socially this year, which is nice, since he was really painfully shy for a long time. He's got a clique of friends now, and much more social confidence than before. Academically, he's got all the tools he needs.

M-lady and I headed for work after the conference. The weather was great today, and the kids apparently got the chance to play outside for a bit, both in the front and back yards. M-lady and I got home around 5:00, and the kids were pretty happy and bouncy.

After Nanny J left, I headed onto the roof to try and fix an issue with our satellite reception. Bud helped me get the tools, and stationed himself by the window to help out. Buster played with M-lady quietly for a while. After I came in, both boys followed me downstairs to watch a little bit of TV.

Buster walked down the stairs unassisted today. He dutifully puts a hand on the railing, and looks pretty stable coming down. It's not quite time to take the safety gates off the stairs, but I can see that day approaching now.

The kids and I watched the conclusion of Stomp, and then I got started on making some dinner. The kids played with M-lady until dinner was ready, and we ate around 7:00, a bit later than usual. There was a little bit more time to play after dinner before we had a smidgen of ice cream and blueberries for a snack and headed for bed.

Bud was pretty good about getting ready for bed, but took a while to fall asleep. Buster apparently tossed and turned a bit before drifting off as well.

Desk Adjustment

M-lady got up with Buster shortly after 7:00, but convinced him to sleep in for a bit. Bud didn't wake until about 8:15 or so, and Buster wasn't really interested in getting up until Nanny J arrived, so overall it was a really late morning.

I had a couple of quick morning meetings, and Bud joined me in the office upstairs, generally keeping himself occupied while I was on the phone. I noticed that he had cleared off the old desk we'd set up for him, which is a piece of modular furniture which mounts on the wall. Since he's quite a bit bigger than when we first set it up, I raised it for him so he can use it as a real desk again. He set it up with some paper and writing implements while I finished up my phone calls.

I headed off to work a short time later. Bud had his sports class in the afternoon, playing flag football, so the kids got some fresh air. I arrived home shortly after 5:00, and the kids and I played for a little while after Nanny J left.

We watched a little bit of TV before M-lady arrived home, including an episode of Blue's Clues at Buster's request. Dinner time arrived shortly, and Bud ate really well. Buster mostly dismissed his dinner, which was pretty unusual.

After dinner, I played with the kids for a little while before M-lady watched a little bit more TV with them before we had snack time. Bud got a small bowl of ice cream, and I intended to share a bowl with Buster. He insisted on getting his own bowl of ice cream, and then needed help to eat it, since it was a little firm to get a spoon in. The ice cream was supplemented with some fruit before we headed up for bed.

M-lady didn't have any trouble putting Bud to bed. Buster really wanted to play with Lego when it was time to head for bed, and had a minor meltdown. He was pretty tired, though, and fell asleep in a few minutes once the lights turned out.

Leprechaun Hunt

Bud was up fairly early this morning, and Buster dragged his feet again a bit getting ready. M-lady handled the initial child care, and I helped out after rousting myself at about 7:45. I took Bud downstairs for breakfast, where he ate a larger-than-usual meal before heading off to school with M-lady.

Buster and I headed downstairs and got some breakfast as well. Buster also wanted a double-breakfast, having his usual oatmeal plus an Eggo. He finished up a few minutes before Nanny J arrived, and then headed out the door with her to go to his gym class before I headed out for work.

Bud told me he took a nap this afternoon while Buster was napping, but this report is unsubstantiated at this point.

M-lady got home in time to relieve Nanny J, and apparently had a good time dancing Riverdance for a while before spending some time drumming. They settled down to look at pictures from Bud's birthday party for a short time before heading back downstairs to get some dinner. I arrived home as they were finishing up, and was able to join them for the end of dinner.

After dinner I played with the kids a little bit. Bud was intent on looking for leprechauns, and had left some 'notes' around the living room for them. We searched together, but didn't find any.

We headed for snack time at about 7:30, and both kids had a minor meltdown. Bud pulled himself together and stayed downstairs for a snack, while M-lady took Buster upstairs and jumped directly to the bedtime routine. Buster had another minor meltdown at lights-out time, but ended up going to sleep reasonably quickly. Bud was pretty good about getting ready for bed, although it took him a while to fall asleep. He didn't nod off until about 9:00.

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Piggies

Buster woke shortly after 7:00, but I convinced him to snooze for a bit. Bud didn't wake until after 8:00, and we didn't get Buster dressed and out of his crib until nearly 8:30. Nanny J arrived while Buster was still eating his oatmeal.

The kids seem to have had a good day, and were preparing to go out and get haircuts when I was heading out for work. They didn't manage to get haircuts, but Nanny J did manage to talk Buster into his new shoes, which he's been a little bit hesitant about so far.

I got home a few minutes after 5:00, and M-lady arrived home a couple of minutes later. After Nanny J left, M-lady and I worked on settling in. Bud had written on some post-its and stuck them to the office door, saying it was 'closed'... he had pulled out several more of the Lego sets, and had a huge number of little ships and minifigs set up on the table. His notes showed a lot of progress on his writing and guessing at spelling, too.

We watched a little TV before dinner, including an episode of Blue's Clues. Dinner was pretty straightforward, although we got started a little bit later. After dinner, I played with the kids with the marble run set again until snack time.

Buster was fairly easy to get to bed tonight. We play 'this little piggy' when I take his socks off, which he loves, and then say goodnight to the piggies when we put them in his footie pajamas. It makes getting him into his PJs a little easier. After a couple of Cars videos and stories we turned the light out. He protested for a short time before falling asleep.

M-lady didn't have any trouble getting Bud to bed, watching a quick video and reading a story before bed. Bud helped read a little bit, and continues to progress in his reading skills. Both kids have slept well so far this evening.

The Birthday Gifts Keep Coming

Bud was up this morning around 7:30, which was just about when we planned on getting him up anyways. Buster was up a short time later, but unwilling to put on a shirt, so I took Bud down to have some breakfast and left Buster in his crib for a bit. Buster allowed me to finish dressing him when I came back upstairs, and we headed down for breakfast after Bud finished up.

Bud left with M-lady for school, and Buster had a couple of servings of oatmeal, and he had just finished up when Nanny J arrived. I packed up and headed off for work, and Buster waved goodbye to me as I headed out the door.

I was back, somewhat unexpectedly, around 1:00 to get ready for a PT session which became available last-minute. Bud was playing with Lego, and Buster was just going down for his nap. I headed out for PT, and came back around 3:00. Bud was still playing Lego, and Buster was still napping.

Bud hung out with me while I worked in the office, taking a break in the later afternoon to get a snack and have his bath. A little after 5:00, we said goodbye to Nanny J, and I played with Bud and Buster for a little bit before we watched a bit of TV, including an episode of Blue's Clues. I made some dinner after that, and the kids ate pretty well. M-lady arrived home as we were finishing up.

Bud received a birthday gift from Aunt RuggerMom and family in the mail today, which turned out to be a marble run set. Both kids were pretty excited about it, and we all played with it until it was time for a snack and bed.

Bud was pretty good about going to bed, although he didn't fall asleep for a long time. Buster went to bed pretty quickly. Buster made some noises a little later in the evening, but apparently put himself back to sleep, which is very encouraging.

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Popcorn

We had the time change during the night, so the kids were up 'late' effectively, rolling out of bed around 8:00ish. M-lady took the first time with the kids, and I got up around 8:45 and took the kids downstairs to breakfast. We decided to make pancakes, along with Buster's usual oatmeal.

M-lady took off for ballet a short time later, and the kids and I played a little bit before watching an episode of Blue's Clues. The kids wanted a mid-morning snack after the show, and ended up eating a fairly significant amount of food.

After cleaning up, we headed out to play in the front yard. We had a good time out there, with the kids playing ball for a bit while I worked in the garage, and then all of us playing with the trikes and other oddments on the driveway. M-lady arrived home as we were playing, and Buster headed inside with her before too long. Bud and I played a little bit longer before heading in for lunch.

Buster was showing signs of fatigue at lunch, so I put him down for his nap a short time after we finished eating. He protested for a few minutes, and then fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster ended up taking a pretty long nap, and Bud and M-lady and I played with some of his so-far-unopened birthday gifts. Around 3:00 Bud and I sat down to watch some of the Stanford women's basketball game, and Bud suggested we snack on popcorn while watching. We had a little popcorn, and set aside the rest for later.

Bud and I eventually headed outside to play again, and we were out there until it was time to come in for dinner. Buster and Bud had a little bit of popcorn before dinner, much to their delight. After dinner they watched some of High School Musical 3 with M-lady before it was time for bath, snack and bed.

We finished up the popcorn at snack time, and then I put Buster to bed around 8:30. Both kids fell asleep pretty quickly; hopefully the time change won't cause any problems getting Bud out of bed and ready for school in the morning.

Quick Party

The kids were up fairly early this morning, although we were able to put off heading downstairs for breakfast until a bit after 8:00. After getting breakfast underway, I headed back upstairs to snooze for a bit while M-lady played with the kids.

I got up a bit after 10:00, and took the kids outside to play for a little while. I had a little bit of work to do on my car, and then climbed in and ran around the car for a bit. When I finished up with that, we all played in the front yard for a bit before it was time to load up into M-lady's car and head towards Cousin C's birthday party.

We grabbed some lunch on the way over, and the kids ate pretty well. Unfortunately, Buster fell asleep a few minutes before we arrived, assuring that he wouldn't nap again the rest of the day.

It was nice to see everyone, including Ama and Agu. Bud got another birthday present from Aunt O and family, which was a cool art photo of Lego Indiana Jones. We'll see about putting it up in his room tomorrow.

The kids did great playing with/around Cousin C, and seemed very comfortable at the party. Bud did a good job interacting with the adults, and Buster just had fun playing with toys. Of course no one there was particularly threatening, but most were people that the kids don't see very often.

We headed home after having some cake, and tried to get Buster to nap without success. He didn't fall asleep on the way home, and M-lady tried putting him down in his crib while Bud and I ran a quick errand. When Bud and I returned, I switched places with M-lady, and didn't have any more luck getting Buster to nap.

M-lady and Bud went out to run some errands as well, and Buster and I were up and watching videos at about 4:30. I tried to get Buster to go play outside with me again, but he was more interested in playing with his Lego.

After M-lady and Bud returned home, we had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Everyone got in on the chat, and Buster showed off some of his Lego. After chatting we got started on dinner, although Buster was melting down since he hadn't napped or eaten anything since the cake at the party.

He was in better spirits after dinner, and M-lady and the kids watched a little bit of a movie while I did a little bit of work in the garage. I rejoined at snack time, and then helped get Bud ready for bed. We started reading The Boxcar Children, which was a series which I enjoyed as a kid. Bud really liked the first few chapters, so we'll continue to read that over the next week.

Buster passed out almost immediately at lights out, but Bud took a little bit longer. He was asleep around 9:00 or so. Both kids have been sleeping well through the night recently.

Intent on Lego

M-lady had an early meeting, so after getting up with Bud, she headed off for work at about 7:15. Buster was just waking up, so I got him set up with some books in his crib while I got myself dressed and ready to go. Buster was a bit reluctant to get dressed, so I took Bud downstairs for breakfast around 8:00. Buster decided to come down a short time later.

Nanny J arrived as Buster was having his second bowl of oatmeal, and I took Bud off to school. The drop off went well, and Bud had a good day. He didn't get to play outside, though, as the rain started coming down shortly after the drop off.

M-lady got home first today, and played with the kids for a bit before watching a little bit of Cirque Du Soleil - Dralion with them. I arrived home and joined them for a little while before we stopped to have some dinner. The kids ate well, and we headed upstairs to play with Lego after dinner.

Bud and I worked on space ships, while Buster and M-lady played with his Duplo. When it was time to go get a snack, Buster declined in favor of continuing to play. M-lady had built a 'staircase' Duplo structure, and Buster wanted it repeated; I played with him for a bit while M-lady got Bud a snack.

Buster was pretty good about getting ready for bed, and was in his crib with the light out around 8:20. He fell asleep really quickly. M-lady put Bud to bed tonight, and he was asleep pretty soon, too. Both kids have slept quietly.

Lego Imagination

Buster was up a bit before 7:00, and Bud was up a short time later. I sat with Buster for a while, and M-lady got up with Bud. Bud was pretty good about getting dressed and ready for the day, although Buster took a while, content to read books in his crib for a bit before letting us dress him.

Both kids had a solid breakfast a short time before Nanny J arrived. The cleaners arrived a few minutes later, and M-lady and I headed out to work.

Bud had his sports camp again today, and reported that he had a good time playing basketball. I'm glad the weather has been nicer this week so the kids can spend more time playing outside.

I got home a few minutes after 5:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. We watched just a little bit more of Stomp before M-lady arrived home, and we all headed upstairs to play with Lego for a bit. Bud had de-boxed his biggest Star Wars Lego set, and was building imaginative constructions with it. He had already created a pretty cool little structure he called a power supply before he and I sat down to build ships.

Buster played with his Duplo with M-lady as well, and we all had a pretty good time until we headed downstairs to get some dinner.

After dinner, there was a little bit more Lego play before snack time rolled around. Bud had a minor meltdown around snack time, and opted to skip the snack and the story and head straight to bed. He was in bed with the light out well before 8:00. Hopefully he won't wake up at 6:00.

Buster had a much more usual bedtime routine, and has slept quietly this evening.

Stomp

The morning routine was pretty standard, with Bud again being good about getting ready in time to go to school. Buster ate a bowl of cereal along with his bowl of oatmeal, and then was all set to play with Nanny J when she arrived.

Buster apparently had a great time at his gym class today. He's apparently pretty much mastered most of the equipment. He still ignores circle time when they're singing, but he joins them when they have bubbles.

I got home around 3:30, after an afternoon PT appointment. Bud was playing with Nanny J while Buster was napping. I was able to get some work done before joining everyone around 5:00.

We played together for a bit after Nanny J left, and then I hit on the idea of showing the Stomp movie to the kids. They really liked it. We were watching when M-lady arrived home, and we all watched together for a bit before dinner.

The kids ate pretty well at dinner, although Buster dragged it out a little bit. After dinner, we all played in the living room together for a little while before snack time and bed time. M-lady got Bud ready for bed, and I handled Buster. Buster was pretty good about going to bed, and we turned off the light around 8:20. He fell asleep pretty quickly, and both boys have slept quietly so far.

The Trouble With Carrots

Buster apparently woke around 5:00, and M-lady went and slept in his room with him for a little while. I slept through the event entirely. We all got up around 7:30ish, and did a fairly standard morning routine.

Buster again requested a second bowl of oatmeal, but ended up not eating it today. One bowl was enough.

Nanny J arrived around 8:45, shortly after breakfast. Buster didn't mind me heading upstairs to get ready for work. Bud tagged along for a bit, and then settled in to play with Lego while I took a shower. I headed out around 9:30, and waved to Buster as I left, who saw me out the door.

The kids seem to have had a good day with Nanny J. I got home shortly after 5:00, and Buster greeted me enthusiastically. Bud was still playing Lego, apparently. After saying goodbye to Nanny J, I played with Buster for a little bit before calling Bud down to join us. We watched a little bit of TV before dinner, during which time M-lady arrived home.

The kids ate a good dinner, and we played a little more before snack time. Both kids had some carrots for snacks, but they didn't agree with Buster very well. I think he aspirated a little piece of carrot, and ended up barfing most of the carrots up. In any case, I got him ready for bed, and then I read stories with Bud while M-lady put Buster to bed. Both kids fell asleep pretty quickly, and have been sleeping quietly.

Really Big Breakfast

I rolled out of bed around 6:30 to sit with Buster, who was up for good by about 7:00. M-lady took over a little after 7:00, and I was able to snooze again for a little while. At about 7:45, I took both kids downstairs for breakfast. Bud was really good about getting ready for school, and was all set to go about 10 minutes early.

I offered Buster his usual choice of oatmeal flavors, and he dithered about the choice for a while. He finally selected one, but when he'd finished the bowl, asked for one of the other flavors. After he'd finished that bowl, he asked for the third flavor. The boy ate three servings of oatmeal without slowing down. He must have been really hungry.

M-lady took Bud to school, and I played with Buster until Nanny J arrived at about 8:45. Buster didn't mind me heading upstairs to get ready for work.

I got home a little after 5:00, and found the kids playing ball. They each had one, and were throwing and rolling them about the living room. I played with them a bit after Nanny J left, and then eventually sat them in front of the TV until M-lady arrived home near 6:00.

We all had a good dinner, and we played together some more afterward. We took in an episode of Blue's Clues before snack time, and the bedtime routine was pretty standard. Buster kept wanting just one more story and video, but was willing to sleep when I turned out the light, and drifted off in a few minutes. Bud apparently also fell asleep very quickly.

Another Birthday Party

I got up with Buster this morning around 6:30, and was able to head back to bed around 7:30 for a little while. Both kids were willing to hang out upstairs for a bit before breakfast, M-lady didn't take them downstairs until around 8:30. I joined a short time later, and we hung out with Grandma Nese until it was time for me to take her to the airport.

Grandma Nese has been spectacularly helpful while she's been here, and we're going to miss here. Fortunately, I can drive again, so we should be able to get things a little more back to normal over the coming week.

I got home around 10:30, and hung out with the kids until it was time for M-lady to take Bud to Friend M's birthday party. Friend M had attended Bud's birthday party yesterday, so both got more than their share of pizza and cake this weekend. Bud enjoyed himself, and came home with tales of a pinata and lots of candy.

Buster and I hung out while M-lady was out with Bud, and we had some lunch and were napping when they returned. I played with Lego with Bud for a while before Buster woke, and then took Buster for a walk down the street to a nearby open house. Buster insisted on taking his blanket along, so I had to keep him from dragging it on the ground during the walk.

We played a bit more when we got home, and Bud had a bit of a meltdown before dinner. He was restored by dinnertime, and we all ate pretty well. After dinner, I gave Bud a shower and played with the kids for a bit before snack time. Buster was really interested in playing with Bud's Lego, so I made an effort to start collecting Bud's old Duplo, which has been a bit distributed around the house. Buster considered the Duplo satisfactory, and has turned his attention to his own building blocks.

Bud was pretty good about a snack and getting ready for bed, and we read some of his library books before bed. He's doing pretty well with his reading, and can sound out words (when the words can be sounded out). Bud fell asleep around 9:00ish, and both kids have slept soundly so far this evening.

Birthday Party

Bud was up pretty early, and I went and hung out with him. M-lady had gotten up with Buster around 5:00, and was snoozing in his room. Bud and I hung out for a few minutes before he started getting dressed. M-lady headed downstairs with the kids a little before 8:00, and I headed down to join them a short time later.

We spent the morning getting ready for the party, and kids started showing up shortly after 10:30. As last year, each child got a long balloon to use as a lightsaber when they came in, and there was a rousing battle going on in short order.

After the battle slowed down a little, we played a Star Wars version of 'pin the tail on the donkey', which the kids seemed to enjoy more the longer the game went on, since they started understanding how it worked. We only had a couple of kids wander off course.

Pizza arrived a short time later, and the kids all ate. Buster sat at a the table with the big kids, and did a great job feeding himself a piece of pizza with minimal mess. After pizza, cupcakes were set up in the shape of two crossed lightsabers, with the candles in the middle. Bud did a good job of blowing out the candles, and everyone enjoyed a cupcake.

The kids all left a bit before 1:00, and we unanimously posited the party a success. I sat down to watch a little bit of a basketball game before putting Buster down for his nap. Buster protested, but was really tired after the party, and passed out pretty quickly. While he (and M-lady and Grandma Nese) napped, Bud and I played with Lego, working on sorting and cleaning up old kits so he could start on the new ones.

When Buster woke, I took a nap while M-lady and the kids had a snack. I joined again around 5:30, and we got started on dinner before too long, working on some of the leftover pizza. After dinner I took a shower with Bud and got him cleaned up, and we headed downstairs to have a snack and start the bedtime routine.

M-lady reported that Bud fell asleep really quickly (not surprisingly), but Buster took a long time to fall asleep. He didn't nod off until nearly 9:30. We'll see if he sleeps solidly tonight.

A Very Lego Birthday

Bud got me out of bed at about 3:30 this morning, and I slept with him for about an hour. I think he was just a little over-excited about turning five years old today. The kids were up a little early, and M-lady handled Buster.

Bud was pretty excited when he got up, and we gave him his first birthday gift after he got himself dressed: a Star Wars Lego watch. He really liked the watch, and we assembled and fitted it before having breakfast.

Bud also received his gift from Grandma Nese (and Granddad B), which included an Indiana Jones Lego set. Buster also got a Star Wars throw blanket, which kept him pretty happy this morning. I was able to play with Buster and the blanket a bit after M-lady took Bud to school, and before Nanny J arrived.

M-lady went with Bud to school, laden with cupcakes for the class for Bud's birthday celebration. She also helped out in class today in the morning, and had a good time. Bud had fun as the birthday boy, and was pretty excited about the birthday book his class put together for him: a spiral bound collection of drawings by all the kids.

The kids played with Grandma Nese and Nanny J in the afternoon. M-lady got home a little early, and we offered our birthday wishes to Nanny J as well. Coincidentally, her birthday is the same as Bud's.

At about 5:00 we packed up and headed out to Chevy's for dinner. The kids ate pretty well, and we all enjoyed some ice cream for dessert. Buster managed to do a pretty good job this time, without dropping ice cream on himself.

After dinner, Buster came home with Grandma Nese and me while Bud went on a grocery run with M-lady. We watched some Animusic while waiting for them to get home. Once they arrived, we set up a video chat with Ama and Agu so they could give their birthday wishes to Bud, and see him open his gift from them. He thought the air hockey set was pretty neat, although we didn't get a chance to set it up tonight.

We also let Bud open his gift from Grandma W and Granddad B, which was a couple of older Star Wars Lego sets. Bud was pretty excited, particularly when I told him that this Lego had belonged to his Uncle D, and some of it had been mine before it was Uncle D's.

We watched an episode of Blue's Clues before having a snack and getting ready for bed. Bud was reasonably cooperative getting ready for bed, and we turned out the light a little before 8:30. Bud didn't fall asleep until about 9:15, though. Both kids have slept well so far this evening.

Today also recognizes the four year mark for this blog. This is apparently post #1433, which means I've missed about 30 days in the last four years. Thanks for reading!

Birthday Prep

Bud rolled me out of bed around 5:30 this morning, and we lay down in his bed together for a bit. He tossed and turned until after 7:00, when he finally fell back to sleep. He ended up not waking up until about 9:00.

Buster was up around 6:00, and didn't have any trouble staying up. M-lady hung out with him and ended up doing a fairly normal morning. I helped with Buster once we got downstairs and got some breakfast. Grandma Nese returned from her coffee run around 8:30, and Nanny J arrived a few minutes later.

Grandma Nese and Nanny J took the kids off to the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo a little later in the morning. They all apparently had a really good time there, and Bud reported seeing lots of animals. On the way back, they hit a Ranch 99 and did a little shopping, which everyone enjoyed. They didn't get back home until nearly 12:30, at which point everyone had some lunch.

Buster napped in the early afternoon, and woke just in time to go with Bud to Bud's sports class at 3:00, along with Nanny J and Grandma Nese. Again, they all had a good time. The weather was great today, so it was good for everyone to get out of the house for a bit.

Nanny J left a little after 5:00, and Grandma Nese and I played with the kids for a short time before watching some Riverdance at Bud's request. At about 6:00 we got started on dinner, and we were just cleaning up when M-lady arrived home. M-lady got some dinner for herself and then started on making cupcakes for Bud's school tomorrow to celebrate Bud's birthday. Bud helped to mix the cupcakes.

We had a great video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B, and both the kids engaged quite a bit. Buster really enjoyed seeing the different video filters in iChat this time, and seemed much more interactive than he has in the past. The grandparents got the opportunity to wish Bud a Happy Birthday, since things are likely to be busy for the next couple of day.

Snack time came up pretty quickly, and the kids enjoyed some Girl Scout cookies M-lady rescued from work. After snack, I got Buster into his PJs (for the first time in a while, now that I can walk again) and we watched some Cars videos on the computer and the iPhone before bed. Buster was a little reluctant to go to sleep, but drifted off before too long. He's woken briefly a couple of times, but has gone back to sleep quickly. Bud's been sleeping well since he fell asleep with M-lady around 8:30.

THX Fear

Buster woke a little early this morning, and M-lady was able to hang out with him for a bit. I got up before 7:00 with Bud, but after getting him settled I was able to go back to bed for a little while. We all got rolling a little after 7:30, and did the usual routine to get Bud ready for school. Buster seemed a little hungry this morning, and essentially had two breakfasts: his usual bowl of oatmeal, followed by a full bowl of dry cereal.

Buster was happy hanging out with Nanny J and Grandma Nese, and they all went to Buster's class at Gymboree mid-morning. Grandma Nese reported that Buster was wholly uninterested in following the group activities, but systematically explored all the play equipment in the place.

They had lunch after retrieving Bud from school, and were all busy playing 'Treasure Hunter' again when I came down for lunch a little before 1:00. Buster went down for his nap a bit after 1:00, and Bud played some board games with Grandma Nese. At about 2:00, Grandma Nese took me to my PT appointment, and Bud apparently spent the time playing with Lego by himself.

I was able to rejoin at about 5:00, and after saying goodbye to Nanny J, we all played together a little bit before sitting down in front of the TV to watch some of Cars at Buster's request. Buster wanted to sit far away from the TV, though. He's hit the age where things are starting to be scary, and the first thing on the list for him is apparently the THX logo and sound. So we skip that part.

M-lady went out to pick up some dinner, and we all enjoyed the food. After eating, we played with the kids in the living room, running around a bit (I mostly sat and played catch). I nodded off around 7:30, and woke again after the kids had snacked and it was time to get ready for bed. Bud was pretty cooperative, and we enjoyed reading together.

Treasure Hunting

Buster was up a little early this morning, and M-lady hung out with him for a bit. I joined a little after 7:30 and hung out with Buster while Bud got himself dressed. We headed downstairs for breakfast a bit after 8:00, and joined Grandma Nese.

I headed upstairs to start working a few minutes before Nanny J arrived, and the kids were fine hanging out with Grandma Nese. When I managed to come downstairs again for lunch, shortly after 1:00, the kids had pretty much all the toys in the living room spread out on the floor. They were apparently 'treasure hunting', and had gathered all their treasure. Everyone seemed to be having a good time.

Buster took a solid nap, and the kids had baths in the later afternoon. Nanny J took off around 5:15, and I joined the kids and Grandma Nese downstairs. After playing for a bit, we eventually all ended up in front of the TV for about 20 minutes before getting started on dinner. M-lady arrived while we were setting up, and was able to join us.

After dinner, I fell asleep while M-lady and Grandma Nese played with the kids a bit more. Bud was working on being a cowboy, and played roping cattle for a bit. Buster was standing up on the seat of his scooter, and while that activity was not encouraged, it was noted that he was perfectly stable.

I rejoined after snack time, and read some stories to Buster. Snack time ended a little late, so Buster wasn't in bed until nearly 8:30, and fell asleep quickly. Bud was also in bed a little late, but was asleep before 9:00.

New Game

Buster was up around 6:45, but hung out in his crib for a bit while M-lady stayed with him. Bud didn't get up until about 7:30, which left a fairly directed morning of getting ready for school. I took the kids downstairs around 8:00 to get some breakfast with Grandma Nese, and we said goodbye to M-lady and Bud at about 7:15.

Buster and I played together for a little bit while Grandma Nese was out getting coffee, and Nanny J arrived arrived about 10 minutes later than usual, coming from a doctor's appointment. Buster was pretty happy playing with Grandma Nese and Nanny J, and I didn't have any trouble escaping upstairs to start working.

Buster seemed to have a good time this morning, and they all went to pick up Bud from school before lunchtime. I came downstairs for my own lunch around 1:30. Buster was napping, and I found Bud and Grandma Nese playing a new board game that Grandma Nese had picked up for him: a Star Wars themed version of Trouble. They were having a great time, and apparently played it for most of the afternoon.

I came downstairs around 5:00, after the kids had their baths, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. Bud played with Grandma Nese some more, and I watched a little bit of The Wiggles with Buster. At about 6:00, we turned off the TV and Grandma Nese and I got started on making some dinner.

Bud proclaimed that he wasn't going to eat dinner, and went and got himself into pajamas at about 6:30. A little before 7:00 he decided he was hungry, and joined us. He ended up eating pretty well. M-lady arrive home a short time later, while the kids and I were playing Lego Star Wars before bedtime.

Bedtime was pretty quick, since Bud was already in his PJs. I read him a story and we chatted a bit, and he fell asleep around 8:30. Both kids have slept quietly so far.
