Early Birthday Gift

The kids were up a bit after 7:00 this morning, having slept reasonably well last night. We got going a bit sluggishly, and ended up heading downstairs to get some breakfast a little bit after 8:00, joining Grandma Nese after she had picked up her coffee.

M-lady headed off to her ballet class, and the rest of us watched a little bit of morning TV before playing together a bit. I set up a car driving game which I played with Granddad B, which Buster watched intently for a little while. We wrapped up in time to get some lunch.

The kids ate well, and M-lady arrived home as we were wrapping up. She had hit the grocery store on the way home, and had picked up little notebooks for the kids. Buster was thrilled, saying "Notebook!" and showing it the way Steve on Blue's Clues does. Buster carried the notebook around for most of the rest of the day.

We played together a bit more after lunch, and watched a little bit of the Olympic hockey game before 2:00, when Nanny J and her husband arrived. For Bud's birthday, they took him to see Disney On Ice this afternoon. They apparently had a great time, and Bud came back around 5:30, telling us all about the trip. While they were gone, Buster took a nap, and M-lady got started on preparing dinner.

Bud enjoyed the show, which included bits from The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Cars, and Tinkerbelle. Bud reported that he got to have ice cream, too.

After dinner the kids played with Grandma Nese and M-lady while I rested for a bit. A short time before 7:00, M-lady got started on bathing the kids, and I helped get Buster dressed after he was cleaned up. We headed downstairs for a snack, then back upstairs to start the bedtime routine. Buster went down pretty easily, but Bud apparently had a bit of a meltdown around bedtime. M-lady managed to calm him down and get him to bed, though, and both kids have slept soundly so far.

Getting Out a Little

Bud rolled me out of bed around 6:00, and I went and hung out with him in his room until about 7:30. At that point, I crawled back into bed and M-lady got up to do the morning routine with the kids and Grandma Nese. They apparently had a good morning and a good breakfast, although Bud wasn't dressed yet by the time I got up around 9:30.

We had a nice video chat with Granddad B when I got myself dressed and headed downstairs, and the kids were pretty interactive. We signed off after chatting for a bit, and Grandma Nese went out to run an errand.

Buster and I played together for a bit, while Bud played with Lego upstairs and M-lady took a little bit of a nap. Grandma Nese returned around 11:45, and we packed up and headed off to the mall to get some lunch.

The mall was packed, but it was good to get out with the family. The kids enjoyed their corndogs, and we took a look at the Lego store and the Apple store before getting back in the car and heading for home. I tried to put Buster down for a nap a little bit after we got home, and M-lady, Bud, and Grandma Nese went out to CostCo for a shopping run.

Buster didn't fall asleep for a while, finally passing out around 3:00, after I changed a poopy diaper for him. He slept until about 4:30, and woke up pretty groggy. The others were home by then, so M-lady got him a snack before dinner was ready.

The kids and I watched a little bit of TV before dinner, and then both kids ate well. After dinner, I played some Lego Star Wars with Bud before we had brownies for dessert, which Bud helped make. Bud was pretty good about getting ready for bed, and we read a couple of stories and watched a video before turning out the light a little after 8:00. Bud fell asleep pretty quickly.

Buster was pretty riled up right before bed, but fell M-lady got him to fall asleep before too long. Both kids have slept quietly so far.

Evening Project

The kids slept well, and we all got up a bit later than usual this morning, closer to 7:30. I helped get Bud dressed and downstairs for breakfast, and then returned upstairs to help out with Buster. M-lady headed out with Bud, taking him to school at about 8:15, and Buster was playing with Grandma Nese when I headed upstairs to get to work. Nanny J arrived around 8:45.

Buster apparently had a really fun morning playing with Grandma Nese and Nanny J. When I came downstairs around 11:45, there were toys all over the living room. Grandma Nese took me to my PT appointment, and as we were leaving, Nanny J returned from picking up Bud at school with Buster in tow. A storm was moving in, so the wind was howling, and they scuttled inside to get some lunch.

The rain started coming down while I was in PT, and so we holed up for the afternoon after I got home. Buster was napping when we arrived, and Bud hung out with me for a bit while I ate lunch. Then Bud and Grandma Nese played together in the playroom while I worked and Buster napped.

When I finished up work and came down, around the time Nanny J was taking off, we made plans for dinner and then settled in front of the TV to watch some Wiggles. Dinner arrived just as the show ended, so that worked out pretty well. M-lady got home as we were eating, and joined us for dinner.

After dinner, everyone helped me get my bike set up on the trainer in the playroom, with a fence set up around it, so I can leave it up and use it to rehab my knee. It was nice that everyone pitched in. We got it all set up just as it was time to start getting ready for bed.

The kids had snacks (including a special treat of Girl Scout cookies M-lady brought home from work), and we did the bedtime routine. Bud was pretty cooperative about getting ready for bed, although he took a long time to fall asleep. Buster struggled when I put him into his crib, but lay down and went to sleep quickly after I showed him 'just one more' Cars video on the iPhone. Buster has woken a couple of times this evening, but not for very long each time.

Quick Evening

M-lady got up with Buster a little bit before 7:00, and the morning followed a pretty standard routine. We headed downstairs around 8:00 to get some breakfast and see Grandma Nese. The cleaners arrived around 8:30, and Nanny J a few minutes later.

M-lady took me into the office today, and the kids spent the day with Nanny J and Grandma Nese. They apparently had a great time, and Buster didn't have any problems at all when Nanny J left for a doctor's appointment mid-morning. They had a good lunch together, and Bud got to go with Grandma Nese to the grocery store in the early afternoon.

Bud had sports class this afternoon, and they all went. Buster had fun playing at the playground, and Bud apparently did very well in class, particularly in the base running they did for tee-ball. Both kids got baths after they got back from the outing.

M-lady and I got home a little late, near 6:30. The kids were having a great time playing with Grandma Nese, and we got started on dinner immediately. Both kids ate well, and played for a few minutes after dinner before it was time to get started on bedtime.

Bud asked me to tell him about The Incredibles while he was getting ready for bed, so I gave him a quick synopsis of the story. He wasn't wild about the short videos we watched on the iPhone, though, finding them a bit stressful. We read some good stories at bedtime, though, and he was asleep pretty quickly. Buster also fell asleep without much trouble.

Big Dinner Outing

The morning routine was pretty standard, although the kids were a little more anxious to get downstairs to see Grandma Nese. Grandma Nese headed out to get coffee while we were having some breakfast, and Buster ate about four servings of cereal. We were playing together in the living room when Grandma Nese returned home, a few minutes ahead of Nanny J.

M-lady took Bud to his field trip today, rather than to his usual Wednesday school. He apparently had a good time, and the teacher reported that he behaved himself well. I haven't had a chance to talk to him about the trip yet, though. M-lady brought Bud home a bit before lunchtime.

Grandma Nese took me to my PT session this afternoon around 2:00, while Buster was down for his nap. He was awake by the time we got back, and the kids had their baths while I was wrapping up work in the afternoon. When I came downstairs around 5:00, the kids were involved in a vigorous game of football. Buster was having fun running around with a basketball, but his emulation is getting better. He'll squat down holding the ball on the ground between his feet, then say, "Hike!" and run around for a bit, before yelling "Touchdown!" and throwing both hands in the air.

M-lady arrived home a short time later, and we packed up and headed out to Chevy's for a school fundraiser night. Chevy's was donating 25% of their proceeds for the evening to Bud's preschool, so we ran into many of Bud's schoolmates there. The kids ate well and were well behaved, and got a treat at the end of the meal in kiddy ice cream cones. Buster insisted on holding his own cone, so I sat on surveillance with a napkin at the ready, and managed to deflect the inevitable falling scoop of ice cream. Buster had already eaten about half of it, so wasn't too disappointed.

It was nearly bedtime when we got home, so we said goodnight to Grandma Nese and started the bedtime routine straight away. Both kids were pretty tired, and while Buster cried for a short time after the light went out, he fell asleep pretty quickly. I believe Bud fell asleep in a short time as well.

Visitor Excitement

Buster was up pretty early again, and M-lady handled him. I rolled out of bed a bit before 7:30, with Buster in his crib, calling for "Doggy Lotion!" Apparently M-lady put lotion on Buster's legs when she changed his diaper, and Buster wanted to make sure his stuffed dog got lotion, too. He was contented after M-lady pretended to put lotion on his doggy. We're not sure why the doggy needs lotion, and why the other stuffed animals in his crib -- his kitty and his Pooh -- don't.

Bud rolled out of bed a little bit later, and we all headed down for breakfast shortly after 8:00. The kids ate a good breakfast, and M-lady took off for work about 20 minutes before Nanny J arrived.

I had to go on phone calls from about 10:00 to 2:00. Before I jumped on the first call, Bud wanted to play with his Leapster, which was in our room. He came to pick it up, and took his two game cartridges with him. A few seconds later, he returned, reporting that he'd lost one of the cartridges. A search of his room was fruitless. I'm not sure how he managed to lose a game in about 20 seconds so completely, but we're just going to have to keep a lookout for it.

The kids had lunch, and once again were generally pinned inside today with the rain. Bud hung out with me and had a snack while I had lunch around 2:30, and then played with Nanny J until our visitor/helper, Grandma Nese, arrived around 4:00. Buster woke around then, and was a little skeptical at first, having just woken up.

Both kids were playing excitedly and noisily when Nanny J took off around 5:15. Grandma Nese had a bit of a travel headache, so I quieted things down by setting up an episode of Blue's Clues M-lady arrived home as we were watching, and we had dinner after the show ended. Buster really chowed down on fish tonight.

Grandma Nese headed to bed shortly after dinner, and I took the kids upstairs since they were again playing a bit loudly. We sat down in front of the computer, and I found a flash version of tic-tac-toe to play with Bud. It turned out to have sounds when placing X's and O's, and Buster thought it was hysterical.

M-lady and Bud read some of Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends while Buster and I watched some more videos. Bud really liked some of the silly poems. I continued to read from the book at his request as his bedtime story. He enjoyed most of the poems, but didn't 'get' some of them. We had a good time talking about them, though.

Bud fell asleep shortly after 8:30, and Buster apparently also fell asleep pretty quickly. Both kids have slept quietly so far.

Loud and Fast

Buster was up pretty early, and M-lady and I were out of bed shortly after 7:00. Bud didn't get going until about 7:45, but was pretty good about getting himself together and having breakfast before heading out to school.

Nanny J arrived a bit early, so M-lady and I could take Bud to school and I could go to work. The kids seem to have had a good day, and were fresh out of the bath when we got home around 4:30. Bud hung out with me for a bit while I wrapped up work, and we said goodbye to Nanny J around 5:15.

We played together until dinner time. Buster spent a lot of time riding his sit 'n push fire truck. He would jump up and down while sitting on it, banging it up and down, and then say, "Loud!". Then he would rush forward and back, and say, "Fast!". He had a great time.

Bud and I played a little bit of Lego Indiana Jones before dinner was ready. We all ate a solid dinner, and afterward the kids watched me play a video game for a short time. Buster loves to see the cars.

Snack time came up pretty quick, and we headed up for bed after that. Bud was pretty good about getting ready for bed, and Buster went to sleep right after watching a couple of videos. M-lady spent a while watching videos and chatting with Bud, and he didn't end up falling asleep until after 9:00. Fortunately he doesn't have school tomorrow.

Staying Inside on a Rainy Sunday

the kids have been sleeping through the night for a while now, which is nice. Buster was awake early this morning, but was generally content to sit in his crib. He wanted company, though, so first M-lady, and I, sat in his room with him for much of the early morning. Bud woke a bit after 8:00, and we all headed downstairs and got some breakfast.

Babysitter G arrived at about 9:30, and Buster had a minor freak-out. He was generally better when he realized that I was staying: M-lady was heading out to ballet class and to run some errands, and Babysitter G was there to help me out. After M-lady left, we all sat and watched parts of Cars for a little while, and then some of Sesame Street. I was able to head upstairs and catch about an hour nap while Babysitter G watched the kids.

Bud ate a solid lunch, but Buster didn't really eat anything with Babysitter G there. I joined them a little after noon, and set up a brief video call and game session with Granddad B. Buster liked watching the cars race.

M-lady arrived home while we were playing, and took Babysitter G home, with Buster going along for the ride. Buster ate lunch after they got back, and then took a nap from about 2:30 to 4:00ish. While he was napping, M-lady made a hip holster for Bud for his Han Solo costume.

When Buster got up, we all watched videos on the computer for a little while before M-lady headed downstairs to start on dinner. I iced my knee before dinner, and Bud sat with me through most of that. We had a good dinner, and M-lady gave the kids baths sequentially while I played with the one not bathing. Buster was really excited to take a bath today.

We had snack time at 7:30, and the kids were in bed by 8:00. Bud didn't fall asleep until nearly 9:00, but both kids have slept well so far.

Hard Wake Up

Buster was up early this morning, and M-lady fielded him first. I got up a little after 7:00 and took a shower, and started getting ready for my PT appointment at 8:30. M-lady marshaled the kids, and we were out the door in time for M-lady to drop me off at my appointment.

M-lady took the kids to a bagel shop for breakfast, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Both kids were really well behaved, and went to find a table while M-lady put in the order. After eating, they did a quick grocery run before circling back to pick me up. I think Buster thought the PT clinic was a playground with all the exercise equipment.

I played with the kids a little bit when we got home, and we watched a little TV. M-lady managed a quick break before lunch. After lunch, I played with the kids a bit more before Buster's nap time. He was pretty tuckered out by 1:00, and fell asleep pretty quickly.

Buster woke around 3:30, but didn't want to have his diaper changed so he could get out of his crib for about 45 minutes. He was pretty grumpy. Eventually he made it up, M-lady changed his diaper, and he came and joined me in our bedroom as I iced my knee.

He eventually headed downstairs for a snack with Bud and M-lady, and I joined them before too long. We played a little more after the snack, and then watched some videos on the iPhone before dinner.

The kids ate well, and there was more play after dinner. We watched an episode of Blue's Clues before snacktime. Buster is getting pretty good at spotting clues (the blue paw print), and points at the screen and calls out the clues when he sees them. Apparently he does the same thing with his puppy pajamas that have blue paw prints on them.

After snack, I tried to herd Buster around to get him ready for bed, with no success at all. He's too fast for a shepherd on crutches. M-lady jumped in and got him ready for bed while I helped Bud a bit. Then I watched a few videos with Buster and read a couple stories while M-lady read stories with Bud. Buster fell asleep really quickly around 8:30, and Bud was up chatting with M-lady a little later than that. Both kids have slept quietly so far.

Dee-Too!

The kids slept in a bit this morning, and Buster was just getting changed when Nanny J arrived today. M-lady took most of the day off work, although both she and I jumped onto meeting calls at 9:00.

The kids seem to have had a good morning, with Bud largely hanging out with M-lady in the office, and Buster playing outside with Nanny J a bit. M-lady and I took the opportunity to go out to lunch, and M-lady dropped me off at home around 1:00, heading back out to run some errands. Bud was disappointed for a moment that M-lady didn't come in with me, but looked out the window and waved bye-bye to her as she drove away.

Buster took a long nap in the afternoon, perhaps fueled by his somewhat restless evening last night. Bud spent some time hanging out with Nanny J. Buster visited me before bath time in the late afternoon, and didn't want to go take his bath, which is a somewhat new occurrence. I suspect when I'm back at work, he'll look forward to his bath again.

Nanny J took off a little after 5:00, and I was able to get off my last meeting around 5:30. M-lady watched after the kids for a little bit while I was on the phone for a little while, and we all had dinner together a short time later.

After dinner, I played Star Wars with Bud for a bit before we sat down and watched the Death Star attack scene from Episode IV. Buster was a bit scared, and let us know emphatically that he didn't want to watch that. M-lady came and distracted him until the medal awards ceremony, where Buster was excited to see R2-D2.

Snack and bedtime followed shortly. I read a story to Bud and hung out with him until he went to sleep, which was at nearly 9:00. Buster fell asleep pretty quickly, and both kids have slept quietly so far.

Fast Runner

Buster was up early this morning, but M-lady managed to get him to entertain himself for a bit. I joined a little after 7:30, and read some stories to Buster while he hung out in his crib before we all headed downstairs to get some breakfast.

Nanny J arrived as the kids were wrapping up breakfast, and M-lady headed off for work as I headed upstairs to ice my knee and log in. Bud hung out with me for a short time, and then went out with Nanny J and Buster for a while.

Bud hung out with me occasionally during the day, and had lunch with me when I headed downstairs a little after 12:00. After lunch, Bud played with Nanny J while Buster was napping. They all headed out for Bud's sports class a bit before 3:00.

Bud apparently did really well at his class, which was about soccer today. Nanny J reported that he was the fastest runner, which Bud of course confirmed. He seemed to have had a really good time, and was pretty excited when he got home.

After Buster took his bath, he crawled up on the bed and sat next to me, refusing to be dislodged. I think he was hoping we'd watch videos on my laptop, but I was busy working. He didn't seem to mind too much though, and watched what I was doing with interest for a while, ignoring his usual snack time, finally heading downstairs a bit before 5:00.

Nanny J took her leave around 5:15, and the kids and I watched Animusic 2 before M-lady got home and prepared dinner. Both kids ate pretty well, and played for a bit before snack time. I helped get Bud motivated to get ready for bed, and then read stories with Buster before putting him in his crib and sitting with him while he fell asleep.

Buster caught me trying to sneak out of his room twice, but seems to be sleeping soundly now.

Roman Numerals

The kids woke up a little later this morning, and M-lady handled the first shift. I got up and helped out with breakfast a little bit again, although I'm not very useful. Bud was complaining of a sore tummy, so he lay on the couch while I read him a story.

Nanny J arrived, and Bud was still saying his tummy was sore when it was time for Nanny J to take Buster to his gym class. Bud decided to stay home with my while they headed out to class, and for the most part entertained himself.

Bud found my collection of Star Wars Action Figures yesterday, and pulled them all out to look at them. I convinced him not to open any of them, although I'm not sure he's sold on the concept of a collection. He had fun bringing apparent duplicate figures to me, and we'd figure out how they were different from each other (different print runs, etc.).

Later in the afternoon I explained the concept of roman numerals to Bud. I think he sort of got the I, V and X concept, and I gave him some examples. The one I started with was Star Wars: the movies are labeled as episodes I to VI. Bud promptly asked if George Lucas was Roman.

M-lady was a little late at work, so I hung out with Bud and Buster after Nanny J left. We played a little bit of Star Wars Lego, followed by an episode of Blue's Clues. M-lady arrived home towards the end of the episode, and a few minutes later Friends R and D arrived. D is a coworker of M-lady's, and they had brought sushi with them for dinner. Buster was initially upset, but quickly settled down when he realized that M-lady and I were not leaving, and that there was sushi for dinner.

There was a big lightsaber battle after dinner, and D and R took their leave at about 7:30. The kids had a quick snack and we got started on the bedtime routine. Bud is now largely self-sufficient in the routine, and can mostly get himself ready for bed. It's pretty nice.

I read a story to Bud, and he was asleep before 9:00. M-lady put Buster down without too much trouble. Both kids have slept quietly so far.

Working From Home

The kids woke a bit after 7:00, and M-lady and I rolled out of bed. I helped out with entertaining Buster for a bit before we all headed downstairs for breakfast. M-lady stayed until Nanny J arrived, and then headed off for work.

I went back to work today, although I worked form home, largely from bed with my knee either in a continuous passive motion machine or an ice pack. Bud spent a fair amount of the day hanging out with me, either playing with my crutches or sitting in bed next to me, playing with his Leapster. He was generally good company.

Unfortunately, I was on the phone from about 10:00 to 2:00, so I missed joining the kids for lunch. Bud went downstairs with me when I did go down for lunch, and had a snack while I ate as well. Buster was napping by that point.

Buster wandered in from time to time, asking for a pretzel, since I had a bag next to me for snacking. He was usually placated with one. At one point, I handed the bag to Nanny J so she could lure Buster back downstairs after he'd had his bath.

M-lady arrived home around 5:15, and Nanny J took her leave. I headed downstairs and played with the boys a bit, and we watched some TV and played some video games before dinner. M-lady got dinner all together, which was great.

After dinner, I lay down again for a little while, icing my knee again. Bud came up to hang out with me before we started on bedtime. I helped wrangle the kids a little bit, and then read stories to Buster before sitting with him while he fell asleep. Both kids slept well.

Interactive

Buster woke early this morning, and M-lady went to field him. Bud was up a short time later, and they headed downstairs to get some breakfast before too long, where they hung out with Ama and Agu. Nanny J arrived at 8:45, and the kids played downstairs for most of the morning.

Bud doesn't have school this week, and he came to check on me a bit after 10:00. Bud played with his Leapster while I took a shower and got dressed, and then headed downstairs with me to get some lunch.

Buster seemed particularly interactive with me today, and M-lady noticed it as well. It's hard to put my finger on particular behaviors, but he seemed to really engage with me a bit more than usual. There was also the perception on my part that his comprehension and communications skills just took a little jump as well, but that may have been because he was trying a little harder with me today.

Buster was playing in his Pack n' Play with a bunch of ball pit balls right before I left with Agu to go to my first PT appointment, and he had just let Bud come play with him after Bud asked a couple of times. They apparently had a really fun time playing together.

I played some of my driving game when I got home, and then set up the TV so Bud and Agu could play some Wii Sports Resort. They seemed to have a good time. Bud joined me a little while later, and we played Leapster together for a few minutes before I fell asleep and napped for an hour before dinner.

I joined the tail end of dinner, and then headed back upstairs to ice my knee. The kids played with the grandparents before watching a little bit of Riverdance and getting a snack. I helped get Bud ready for bed, and then read him a story and sat with him until he fell asleep. M-lady was able to put Buster down without much trouble, and both kids have slept quietly so far this evening.

Ama and Agu will take off tomorrow morning for their home, so we said our goodbyes this evening. They've been so incredibly helpful while I've been incapacitated, and we'll miss them a lot over the next week. But they'll be back in a month, and they're leaving behind a very well-stocked fridge, so we should be able to survive.

Wiped Out

I must have pushed a little too hard yesterday, because I couldn't get out of bed until nearly noon. The kids and family checked in on me occasionally, and M-lady kindly refilled the ice-bucket for my cold-compression wrap, but I wasn't able to join them until sometime after lunch. The kids came and watched an episode of Blue's Clues with me before Buster took a nap.

Bud came and hung out with me for a while in the afternoon, and we played games and watched some Olympics. I eventually headed downstairs for a snack, and then played on the Xbox for a bit. Bud and I played some Lego Star Wars, and afterward we all had some dinner together.

After dinner I retired back to bed, where Bud joined me to watch Bob the Builder after he was in his PJs. I was able to sit with him for a little bit as he fell asleep. Both kids have slept quietly so far tonight.

Just Hanging Out

Buster woke once at about 1:00, and I was able to go sit with him for a bit until he went back to sleep. It's hard to sneak out of his room with crutches, though. The kids slept solidly the rest of the night, and were up around 7:00.

M-lady and family let me sleep until after 10:00, which was nice. The kids visited me in the bedroom pretty regularly throughout the day, so I never felt particularly left out. I came downstairs to have some lunch a bit before noon, which Ama and Agu had gone out to pick up.

After lunch, M-lady took Bud off to Friend T's birthday party, and Ama and Agu headed off to Aunt O's after Buster was down for his nap. Unfortunately Buster didn't sleep, and after about half an hour I discovered he had a poopy diaper. He was pretty cooperative, though, and I was able to lift him out of his crib and set him down, then follow him over to the changing table, where I hoisted him up and changed him.

Buster was all set to run off after he was cleaned up, but I managed to get him back into his crib by offering to read stories to him for a little while. M-lady and Bud arrived home again shortly, and M-lady managed to get Buster to sleep while I hung out with Bud.

Bud and I played on his Leapster, and we printed out some of the rewards he's earned from playing the games he has. He was pretty excited about the certificates we printed out.

The kids ate pretty well at dinner, and Ama and Agu arrived shortly afterward. I was able to snooze a little bit again before bedtime, and then sat with Buster as he fell asleep.

Daddy's Leapster

M-lady got up with Buster at some point during the night, and came back to bed around 4:30 or so. The kids got up a bit before 7:00, and M-lady got them dressed and ready to go downstairs. They met Ama and Agu downstairs for breakfast, and M-lady and I got ready to head out to my first post-op checkup.

Buster was OK with being left with Ama and Agu, so M-lady and I had a non-eventful exit. Agu took Bud to school in the morning, where he seems to have had a good day. My post-op visit went well, and M-lady and I were back home around 10:00. I was able to take a quick shower, and M-lady took off for work after I was re-situated in bed.

Bud had a good day at school, at his Valentine's Day party. Apparently Buster got a cupcake, too, when they went to pick him up. The cupcake was mostly squashed by the time they got home, but Buster didn't mind too much.

I hung out with the kids a little bit after lunch, and we played some video games together. Bud and I played a little Lego Indiana Jones before I headed back upstairs for a nap. Bud entertained himself for a bit, and then came and hung out with me at about 4:00.

M-lady got home around 5:00, and we said goodbye to Nanny J, who had given hong bao for the kids to celebrate Chinese New Year with stickers inside. We all had some dinner a short time later, and then I watched an episode of Blue's Clues with them. There was a little more TV before snack time and bed time.

Bud and I played a little bit with my Nintendo DS before bed, and he started getting the hang of Mario Kart. It seems like a game we could play together eventually. Both kids took a while to fall asleep, and I sat with Bud until after 9:00. Both kids have slept quietly so far this evening, though.

Recovering

Yesterday was largely a blur for me, as you might expect. Around 3:00am, as M-lady and I were getting ready to turn in, Buster woke with minor croup and stridor. He doesn't seem to get it as bad as Bd did/does, though, so we were able to give him a dose of orapred and then just monitor him. He went back to sleep after about 40 minutes, and his breathing eased up before too long.

M-lady and I were up early, and Nanny J arrived so we could get to the clinic in time. Bud woke just as we left, so I was able to give him a hug.

The whole surgery process took a bit longer than expected, so we didn't get home until after 4:00pm. The kids had a good day with Nanny J, and were tolerant of me heading upstairs to be pretty quickly. Ama and Agu arrived a short time later, which was great, and the kids were happy to see them.

Bud came in to our room at bedtime so I could read a story to him, which was nice. He apparently took a while to fall asleep. Buster woke once during the night, and M-lady got up with him for a while.

I was much more coherent today. Buster woke around 7:00, and M-lady got up with him. Bud was up a short time later. I went downstairs with the kids for breakfast with Ama and Agu a little after 8:00, and then stayed down there with them playing Xbox and watching TV for a bit.

Bud got to go to a birthday party this morning, which was a surprise party for Friend K. Because it was a surprise party, Bud didn't know about it until this morning (so as not to spoil the surprise). Agu took Bud off to Chuck E. Cheese mid-morning, where he apparently had a really good time.

I ate lunch with Buster and Ama and Nanny J, then retreated to bed again for a while. Bud got home and checked on me before getting some lunch for himself. In the afternoon, Ama and Nanny J and Buster took Bud to his sports class, which wasn't canceled for the first time in three weeks. They played flag football, which Bud apparently enjoyed quite a bit and was reasonably good at.

I went down to hang out a little bit before dinner, and we played a little Xbox together. Bud and I played Lego Star Wars for the first time in a long time. We all had some dinner shortly after Nanny J left, and then I headed back to bed. I believe the kids had a good time playing with the grandparents before bedtime. Bud came to have me read him a story again, which was nice, and then he cleared a place for me and my leg on his couch so I could sit with him for a while as he went to sleep.

Both kids have slept quietly so far, and I hope will sleep solidly through the night so M-lady can get some rest. She's been working hard, and doing a great job of taking care of the kids and keeping me comfortable. Hopefully she'll be able to sleep a little bit more tonight.

Vigorous Play

Buster was up this morning shortly after 7:00, and Bud got up not long later. I got up with the kids, and mostly hung out with Buster, who was pretty content hanging out in his crib for most of the morning. Buster resisted getting up for a long time, and M-lady eventually got him mostly dressed after I'd gone downstairs with Bud to get him some breakfast.

While Bud was munching, I headed back upstairs, finished getting Buster dressed, and brought him down. He got a little upset when Nanny J first arrived, as usual, but happily went to get some breakfast with her a few minutes later. M-lady headed off for work, and I went upstairs to get on a call.

When I left for work an hour later, Bud gave me a hug and Buster waved me a happy goodbye. The kids seem to have had a pretty good day, although they stayed inside due to the inclement weather. I got home just after 5:00, and found Bud running circles around Nanny J in the playroom.

After saying goodbye to Nanny J, we played for a short time before settling in front of an episode of Blue's Clues. After the show, Bud and I got some dinner, although Buster seemed not yet hungry. M-lady arrived home a short time later, and Buster ate dinner with her.

I played a little more physically with Bud and Buster this evening, since I probably won't be able to for a couple of months. Bud and I enjoyed some lightsaber battles, and I gave Buster some Tauntaun rides. We all had a good time. Bedtime came up pretty quickly, and M-lady handled getting Buster to bed while I put Bud to bed.

Bud was good about going to bed, as usual, and I talked with him about the knee surgery I'm having tomorrow (and ACL repair). I told him M-lady and I would be back in the afternoon, and that I would probably be pretty sleepy tomorrow. He asked why I was having the surgery, and was contented with the answer that I needed to fix my knee so I could play with him better.

Because I'm likely to be fairly sedated over the next couple of days, I can't guarantee the coherence of my posts. I'll get back to it as soon as I can, though.

Reading Skills

I spent most of the morning hanging out with Buster, and Bud got himself dressed and ready for school with M-lady's help. We all headed down for breakfast together, and Buster ate his oatmeal pretty quickly. Buster and I read stories together after M-lady and Bud left and before Nanny J arrived. Buster gave me a happy goodbye when I left for work a short time later.

The kids seem to have had a good day. I arrived home in time to say goodbye to Nanny J, and the kids and I watched an episode of Blue's Clues before I got started on making some dinner. We were eating when M-lady arrived home from work and joined us.

I played with the kids a bit, and then sat down with Bud to do some reading while Buster spent time hanging out with M-lady. Bud's reading skills have progressed quite a bit. I helped him on a few words, but he recognizes a large number of words directly, and seems pretty capable of sounding words out that he doesn't know or remember. Of course, English is an awful language for sounding out words, but Bud does reasonably well. We had a fun time reading together.

Bedtime came up pretty quickly, and I put Bud to bed while M-lady put Buster down. Both kids fell asleep pretty easily, although Buster woke a couple of times very briefly.

Football Sunday

The kids were up fairly early this morning, and after M-lady was a first responder, I got up and took them downstairs for breakfast before 8:00. After they ate, we set up to watch Blue's Clues. The server was down, though, and Bud complained loudly (read: wailed) while I rebooted the server. M-lady came down and watched the show with the kids, and I headed back upstairs to nap.

M-lady let me sleep a long time, and I got up to find Aunt O and Cousin C had arrived. The kids were all playing very well together, and I sat down and read a couple stories with Buster. Aunt O and Cousin C had to leave before lunchtime so they could get home in time for a nap for Cousin C.

Buster and I had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese before lunch. Bud poked his head into the frame briefly, but was mostly upstairs with M-lady while I was on the call. After a nice chat, in which Buster got to see their cats, we all got together again for some lunch.

M-lady took off to run some errands after lunch, and after playing with the boys for a few minutes, I tried to put Buster down for nap without success for a bit. Eventually we got up and joined Bud, and played together for a while.

Having finally emptied two 2-liter bottles, we created the 'tornado in a bottle' experiment with the bottles and some tape. It worked beautifully, and we had a lot of fun watching the vortex form as the water drained from one bottle to another. Buster, however, preferred to see the water burble down like a watercooler, and giggled at that over and over again.

We played some more, and eventually I tried to put Busted to sleep again, and again did not have any luck. We got up and the three of us went for a walk around the block, and then had a snack when we returned.

The SuperBowl with just starting when we got back, and we watched that for much of the rest of the afternoon. M-lady arrived home before too long, and was kind enough to go out to pick up dinner. Bud went with her, and Buster and I played and watched the game until they returned.

Both kids ate a solid dinner, although Buster was getting pretty tired, having missed his nap. After dinner, we watched the end of the game, and then I gave Buster a bath and we started getting ready for bed. Buster and I managed to miss snack time, but he was pretty tired, and fell asleep quickly at about 8:00.

Bud took a little longer to fall asleep, and came into the office at one point to let M-lady and I know we were being too loud (we were watching SuperBowl ads on the web). Buster woke briefly a couple of times, but went back to sleep quickly. Hopefully the kids will sleep solidly for the rest of the night.

Car Music

Buster slept a bit lightly last night, and M-lady and I took turns hanging out in his room with him. He ended up getting up pretty early. Bud also woke once, wandering into our room at about 4:45. I put him back to bed and slept in his room with him for a little while.

Bud woke a little before 8:00, and after gathering Buster up from our bedroom floor, where he was playing, I took both boys downstairs for some breakfast. We munched on bagels for a little while, and afterward I played with Buster for a bit while Bud headed back upstairs (where he apparently woke M-lady).

I managed to get a 10:30 haircut appointment, so I left the kids playing with M-lady and ran out to get that done. They had a good time together, with Buster playing with his markers and Bud working on the Valentine's Day cards for his class. He apparently got all 24 finished, and cut most of them out himself.

I arrived home as the clan was having lunch, and was able to join them. Neither child ate a huge lunch, and Buster was starting to show signs of fatigue. I played with the boys for a short time after lunch, but decided it was time to put Buster down for his nap when he got frustrated and whacked Bud on the head with a plastic car. Buster passed out almost immediately after I put him down.

M-lady took Bud to a playdate with his friend J, where he apparently had a great time. They hit Costco on the way home, arriving back around 4:30. In the meantime, Buster took almost a three-hour nap, waking just before 3:30. Once he de-grogged, we went for a walk around the block, and then he ate a huge snack (not surprising given the smallish lunch). We were playing with markers when M-lady and Bud returned.

We decided to try a different mall to get me a couple pairs of pants and get some dinner. The mall was more crowded than I'd ever seen it, and we swam through people to hit the sporting goods stores. The food court wasn't as packed as we expected, and we had a pretty good meal. All in all, despite the crowds, the trip was very successful.

Buster now requires us to play the soundtrack from Cars when driving in M-lady's car. He requests particular songs (Real Gone and Life is a Highway) by name. It's fine for short trips, but we end up listening to the same stuff a few times on most outings with more than 20 minutes of driving time.

We watched an episode of Blue's Clues when we got home, then started the snack and bedtime routine. Bud was very cooperative, but didn't fall asleep when the light went out until shortly after 9:00. Both kids have slept quietly so far tonight.

Relaxing After a Long Week

M-lady was up first with the kids, and I joined her around 8:00, taking Bud downstairs for breakfast. After Bud was set up with his oatmeal, I came upstairs and got Buster dressed, and we headed down to get some breakfast for him after saying goodbye to Bud and M-lady.

Nanny J arrived after Buster had finished up his breakfast, and he was playing with her pretty quickly. Buster gave me a happy wave when I headed for work.

Bud had a good day at school, and the kids were pretty happy when I arrived home near 5:30, a few minutes late. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and played football for a little while. Bud had put his jersey on, so Buster wanted to put his jersey on. It was fun to run around with the ball for a little bit.

We watched a little bit of TV before dinner. Bud wanted to see Episode I, but Buster has apparently crossed the threshold where the aliens look scary. Bud and I ended up watching a little bit while Buster played with M-lady.

We had a good dinner, and played a bit afterward. We ended up all watching a little bit of a Sesame Street DVD we had before starting on snacks and the bedtime routine. Buster was very agreeable about going to bed tonight, although he took a little while to fall asleep. Bud apparently took a while to fall asleep as well. Buster has woken a couple times during the evening, but has been easily soothed so far.

Dealing With The Babysitter

Buster woke first, around 7:00ish, and M-lady read some stories with him. Bud woke around 7:30, and had gotten himself dressed by the time I rolled out of bed a little after 8:00. Buster was half-dressed, having let M-lady change his diaper, but not put his shirt on. I eventually convinced Buster to don a shirt, and we headed downstairs for breakfast.

Buster was a little difficult before breakfast, alternately wanting food and pushing it away. He eventually settled down a short time after Nanny J arrived, though, and the kids were playing happily when I rolled out of the house a little before 10:00.

They tried to go to Bud's Sports Camp today, but class was canceled due to rain. The kids came home and had baths, and seemed pretty happy to see me when I got home a little after 5:00. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and played together a little bit before watching an episode of Handy Manny. M-lady arrived home as we got started on dinner.

Both kids ate well, and we were just wrapped up when Babysitter G arrived, since M-lady and I were headed out for the evening. Bud had warning, but Buster let out a yowl when he saw the babysitter. We calmed him down and plopped him in front of Cars. He gave a cursory cry when we left, but we heard him stop crying as soon as we closed the door.

Babysitter G reported that both kids were great, and Buster even asked her to read a story to him and gave her a hug before bed. So he seems to be warming up to her a little bit. It sounded like Bud was his fantastic self. Both kids have slept quietly since we've been home.

New Kind of Class

The kids slept through the night last night, which was nice. Buster woke at about 6:45, and I went into his room and tried to convince him to go back to sleep (without luck). M-lady had to head off for work a little early again, and Buster happily waved bye-bye to her as she left.

Buster eventually consented to having his diaper changed and getting dressed, and we worked on rousting Bud. He didn't want to get up, and took a little persuading. Eventually we all headed downstairs for breakfast a little after 8:00. The kids ate pretty well, and Nanny J arrived at 8:15 so I could take Bud to school.

We just managed to get to school on time, and Bud trotted off merrily into class. The kids apparently had a good day, and Bud was super excited when M-lady arrived home in the late afternoon to take him to an Irish stepdancing class.

Bud ended up being pretty nervous about all the people in class, but when he was dancing and learning he seemed to really enjoy the class. We're not sure whether it's worth it to continue with the group class right now, but he might be very excited about some private lessons. We might be able to get him confident with some private lessons, and then get him settled into a regular group class.

I arrived home around 5:00, shortly after Bud and M-lady got home. Bud was taking his bath, and Buster and I read some stories and listened to swing music. Bud joined us before too long, and Nanny J took her leave. The kids and I played while M-lady caught up on work.

We watched an episode of Blue's Clues before getting some dinner. M-lady joined us as we were eating, and after dinner we all played a bit more before sharing a Powerbar again for snacktime. Bud was pretty good about getting ready for bed, and we read some new Mo Williams books (The Pigeon Series) that Bud had just gotten.

Bud took a while to fall asleep, but both kids have slept quietly so far this evening. Hopefully they'll sleep through the night again!

Sleeping In

Buster slept pretty well after about 2:00am. M-lady had to get up early to head for work, and was gone before the kids got up. I woke around 7:00, expecting the kids to be up, but all was quiet. I managed to snooze until Bud came and woke me up at about 7:45.

Bud and I hung out in his room quietly until Buster woke, at about 8:00. The kids were both in a good mood, although Buster was reluctant to get out of his crib and have his diaper changed. I found he'd soaked through his diaper when he finally let me change it, so we had to clean him up a bit.

It was after 8:30 when we got breakfast, and Nanny J arrived a short time later. Buster was a little grumpy when she showed up, but both kids were playing happily with her when I headed out a short time later.

The kids apparently had a good day. M-lady got home to take care of the kids shortly after 5:00, and she got them dinner. I wasn't able to get home until about 7:00, as they were sitting down to watch some of Riverdance. We all watched together for a bit before having a quick snack. Bud requested a Powerbar for a snack, so Bud and Buster and I shared one. I took Buster upstairs to get ready for bed.

We watched a couple of Cars shorts on the computer after getting into PJs. Buster threw a bit of a fit when it was time to head for bed, though, and after screaming for a couple of minutes fell asleep in my arms. I guess he was pretty tired. M-lady was able to put Bud to bed after reading a little bit. Both kids have slept quietly so far this evening, which I take as an indication that they are mostly over their colds.

What's For Dinner

Buster slept reasonably well last night, although M-lady slept in his room for a couple of hours in the early morning. Bud slept in until after 7:00, and Buster was up a short time later. M-lady handled the early morning duty, and I got Buster out of his crib a little after 8:00. We headed downstairs to get some breakfast, just as Bud had finished up his and started doing his final prep to head for school.

Buster had a good breakfast, but took a pretty long time eating. He was still nibbling when Nanny J arrived at about 8:45. He was playing happily with her when I left around 10:30, and said and waved goodbye to me as I left.

The kids apparently had a good day, and M-lady arrived home a little after 5:15. The kids were apparently really excited to see her, which made her very happy. They said goodbye to Nanny J and played a little bit.

While figuring out what to have for dinner, M-lady suggested macaroni and cheese. Bud was excited, and Buster responded with a very definite: "Mac... Cheeze". I walked in the door a few moments later, and Buster told me what we were having for dinner very distinctly.

We had a good dinner, and M-lady and Bud jetted afterward to run an errand at Costco. Buster and I played, read a few stories, and watched a little TV. We were just having our snack when M-lady and Bud returned.

I helped put Bud to bed tonight, and he was very cooperative. We read bits from M-lady's favorite childhood book of greek mythology (D'aulaire). Bud was more interested in looking at the pictures tonight, but some of the stories captured him a bit. We'll go back and read more again, I'm sure.
