The Hero's Entrance

M-lady was up a couple of times with Buster, eventually sleeping in his room from about 5:30 on. Bud got me out of bed around 7:15, and after I'd hung out with him for a few minutes I headed back to bed. Bud went and found M-lady sleeping in Buster's room, and waited patiently outside the room until M-lady and Buster started getting up around 7:30.

Bud disappeared for a little while, but apparently came back in his full Indiana Jones costume. M-lady reports he was backlit as he entered Buster's room, looking for all the world like a very small movie hero.

I helped Bud get some breakfast before I headed for work, a little before Nanny J arrived. The kids apparently had a good day, and Bud had Nanny J give him a bath again in the afternoon. He and Nanny J reported that he's working on soaping himself up, rather than relying on her to do it. He still needs some help with his hair, though.

M-lady arrived home before I did, and got dinner for the kids. I arrived home near 7:00, greeted by Bud with a ball and Buster with an toy axe. They were both pretty happy to see me, and I was able to play with them a little bit while I got my dinner going.

They were a little hyper as the evening progressed, so I finally sat them down in front of the TV. We ended up watching a show about big engineering projects, including the drydocking of one of the Disney cruise ships. Bud seems very interested by some of these shows, and really pays close attention. He usually digests the info for a while, and then asks some questions.

After the TV show, we had some Graham crackers for a snack, and headed for bed. M-lady managed to get Buster to sleep pretty quickly, and Bud fell asleep shortly after we turned out the light around 8:30. Buster woke once around 11:00, but otherwise the kids have slept well so far.

Newish Laptop

M-lady got up with the kids again this morning, letting me sleep in a bit. Buster was apparently a little restless last night, and woke for good around 6:30 or so. Bud was up a short time later.

I joined them in the playroom a little bit after 8:00, and discovered Buster playing with Bud's old toy laptop. Bud had agreed with M-lady that he was a little too old for it, and graciously dug it out of his toy pile and gave it to Buster. Buster played with it all morning, happily pressing buttons.

M-lady headed out to catch a ballet class around 9:30, and the boys and I had a good morning together. Buster went down for a nap a bit after 10:00, and Bud and I played card games for a bit. After Buster woke again and de-grogged, we got started on lunch.

M-lady joined us again as we were finishing up lunch, and I played with the kids a bit while she ate. She took over kid duties after a bit, and I got a short nap in. When I returned, Bud was busily coloring in his 'Archeology Notebook', a sketchpad which he's repurposed for Indiana Jones themed adventures. He showed me pictures he'd done of the Ark and Indy being dragged behind a truck.

We had a nice video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Both kids were anxious to be involved, and made quite a bit of noise. Eventually Buster decided the call was over, and reached out and closed the laptop before I could stop him. I dialed the grandparents again and apologized, while M-lady tried to get Buster to take an afternoon nap. They joined the call again a bit later, when it was clear Buster wasn't going to nap.

Buster did end up napping for about 45 minutes after the call. When he woke, we all packed up and headed over to the mall to grab some dinner. After munching, we wandered around a little bit before heading back to the car. Buster had a fantastic time when we turned him loose, running ahead, checking out things in store windows, and narrowly avoiding being stepped on.

We relaxed a bit when we got home, and had a nice video chat with Ama and Agu. Bud and Buster again participated well in the call, although Buster spent a good amount of effort trying to lick the keyboard.

Bud and I watched a little bit of TV while Buster was having a snack, and then Bud and I got a snack before heading for bed. Bud was a little late getting into bed, but went to sleep pretty quickly. Buster had more trouble going to sleep tonight than usual, and M-lady ended up staying with him until he was asleep.

Hiding From The Heat

Buster was up this morning around 6:30, and Bud a bit later. M-lady intercepted the kids and got them breakfast, which let me sleep in until shortly after 8:00. I headed downstairs to find the kids playing in the living room with M-lady.

M-lady headed upstairs to nap for a bit, and I played with the kids for a while. After some lightsaber battles, we headed into the playroom to watch about 20 minutes of TV. It was an animal show, and both kids were interested.

After the TV, we played some more until Buster was starting to get tired. A little before 10:00, I tried to put Buster down for a nap while M-lady got up to help supervise Bud and Friend M, who arrived at 10:00 to play with Bud.

Buster got about an hour nap in, and we got up around 11:00. M-lady and I traded off playing with Buster and monitoring Bud and Friend M, who overall had a good time together. Buster got started on an early lunch, and after Friend M was picked up, I got some lunch together for the rest of the family.

There was various play after lunch, and we had a nice video chat with Ama and Agu, followed by a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. The kids participated in both chats quite a bit. We didn't end up heading outside, though, since the weather was so hot today (it touched 100 degrees in the early afternoon).

I tried Buster on a second nap in the afternoon, with no luck. After getting up, we all played together a bit more before getting started on an early dinner. Everyone ate pretty well.

After dinner, the kids and I had a good time chasing each other around a bit. M-lady managed to get some pictures. Buster loves to play "I'm gonna get you!". Bud joined in, alternate chasing me and Buster.

Buster manged to climb onto Bud's bed, giving him access to the stickers Bud's put on the wall above his bed. We decided to put Bud's bed on the frame which we'd gotten but not installed, raising his bed another six inches or so. Bud helped me get it installed while M-lady distracted Buster.

I got both the boys into the shower to get them cleaned up, and we snacked and headed for bed shortly thereafter. M-lady was able to put Buster to sleep around 8:00, and Bud fell asleep around 8:30. Buster woke once around 11:00, but otherwise the kids have slept well.

Card Games

I had a really early meeting this morning, and rolled out of bed around 6:30. M-lady had been woken at about 6:00 by Bud, and was sleeping in his room with him. As I was getting ready, Buster started making noise, and M-lady was just getting up with him when I left for work.

They apparently all had a good morning, and M-lady headed for work after Nanny J arrived. M-lady and I arrived home at the same time, shortly after 5:00, and the kids were pretty happy to see us. We wished Nanny J a good weekend, and got started on the hanging out part of the evening.

Bud requested some TV, so we watched about 15 minutes before Bud and I headed out to pick up dinner. Just for kicks, we picked up some lottery tickets on the way, since the jackpot was particularly large. I spent most of the errand trying to explain how a lottery worked to Bud.

We had dinner when we got home, and Bud ate really well. Buster didn't eat too much, and M-lady suspected that he's been getting up early since he hasn't been eating enough in the evening.

After dinner, I played with Buster for a bit, and M-lady played with Bud. They played card games, and I played tag with Buster for a little while before he got tired and wandered over to see what Bud and M-lady were up too. I distracted him by pulling out the Memory cards, and he and I played with those for a while.

After a bit, M-lady and I switched kids, and I played cards with Bud for a bit. Bud had taken a bath during the day again, so we were able to play right up to bedtime. Bud headed upstairs with M-lady while I got Buster a snack. Buster ate a little bit more, but was more interested in looking at the cereal box.

Buster went to sleep on his own at about 8:00. I read him a story, turned out the lights, dropped him in his crib, and walked out. Yay! M-lady read Bud a story and lay in bed with him for a little while before letting him fall asleep on his own, a short time later. Both kids have slept quietly so far.

Game Night

M-lady got up with Buster early, and handed him off to me around 7:30. We hung out together in the hexagon for a while, until we heard voices. We joined M-lady and Bud in Bud's room, and began the morning in earnest.

The kids were pretty good in the morning, and Bud helped to get his room picked up for the cleaners who arrived at about 8:30. Buster was a little wary, but didn't mind too much. Nanny J arrived a short time later, and I headed for work. M-lady dropped Bud off at school.

Bud had a good day at school, and then went over to Friend M's house in the afternoon. When I arrived home, shortly after 5:00, Bud was happy to see me. He was wearing shorts, and pointed out that they had tried to play outside in the later afternoon, but it was too hot out.

Bud had taken a bath with Nanny J in the afternoon (I believe because he got sweaty playing with Friend M and outside), which really opens up the evening. After Nanny J left, I plopped the kids down in front of the TV briefly while I wrapped up some work. We wrestled for a short time in the playroom, and then started on dinner when the kids started sounding a bit whiny.

Bud ate really well. Buster snarfed his broccoli, but turned up his nose at the chicken again. I tried putting a little bit of soy sauce on a piece of chicken for him, which intrigued him. He tasted it, and then rejected the chicken again. Oh well.

M-lady arrived as we were finishing up, and I took the kids into the playroom for a while. Bud wanted to play a video game, so we set up Lego Indiana Jones and spent some time on that. After playing a couple of levels, we turned off the TV and Bud played card games with M-lady while I snoozed on the couch for a few minutes.

At bedtime, I got Bud into PJs and read him a story while M-lady took care of Buster. Buster is now at the point where one of us can snuggle him, say night-night, turn out the lights, drop him in his crib, and head out of the room. For the past few nights, he's been OK with that.

M-lady took a turn lying down with Bud for a bit before he fell asleep. Both kids have slept quietly so far.

Lack of Costume

Buster got me out of bed this morning around 7:00, but was willing to snooze for a few minutes before I got up and changed his diaper. Bud had gotten M-lady up in the meantime, so we congregated in Bud's room for a little while. The rest of the morning was pretty standard.

The kids had a good day. Nanny J took Bud to have his hair cut during the day, and reported that they didn't have any trouble finding the salon M-lady gave her directions for. The arrived in the parking lot and followed the sound of children crying.

Bud was good for his haircut, though, and Buster didn't need one. Bud managed to make off with not one, but two lollipops.

M-lady arrived home to take care of the kids first, and I got home a bit later, right as M-lady was getting started on dinner. Bud's haircut looked pretty good. He was only wearing underwear and socks when I got home, though, and I never really got a clear explanation on why that was the case.

We did find out that the kids had mega-snacked in the late afternoon yesterday, though, which explained their lack of appetite at dinner. Bud ate well tonight, though, bolting down a bowl of stew. Buster ate reasonably well, but wasn't terribly hungry.

After dinner, we watched a little bit of TV, and then started on the bedtime routine. Bud was a little reluctant to shower at first, but cooperated once the operation got moving. He had a good-sized snack before bed as well. We turned out the light around 8:30, and he was asleep within about 10 minutes. M-lady put Bud down around 8:00 without much difficulty, and both kids have slept quietly so far.

Little Mimic

Buster was up pretty early, and M-lady got up with him. Bud got me out of bed a bit after 7:00, but I managed to get him to snooze with me in his bed for a while before we started getting dressed and ready to go.

M-lady took Bud to his summer school class again, where he had a good time. I arrived home around 5:00, and both kids were happy to see me. Bud told me a little about his day at school, and told me about his new Mandarin word for "bee".

After Nanny J left, we played together for a little while before watching a little bit of TV. M-lady arrived home a short time later, and we all got started on dinner.

Neither child ate much tonight. I guess they just weren't very hungry. After M-lady and I had eaten, I took Bud out for quick errand. He was a little reluctant to join me at first, but became much more interested when I suggested I could take Buster instead. When Buster heard that, he trotted off to the door and started trying to put his shoes on, again showing his remarkable comprehension.

Bud and I escaped and had a pleasant trip to Best Buy. When we got back, M-lady told us about the walk she and Buster had taken outside. Buster was fascinated by a local dog and cat, neither of which was very excited about being assaulted by a toddler.

The four of us played together in the living room for a short time before I started the bedtime routine with Bud. He was pretty cooperative, and we had a good time with a 'new' Star Wars book at bedtime. Buster was asleep shortly after 8:00, and Bud, despite his protests, was asleep a short time after we turned out the lights around 8:30.

Buster has started trying to mimic our speech more often, which is really cute. Today he said, "ding-dong", and recently he's been trying to say "Thank you" as well ("dank yooo"). I expect he'll start picking up words pretty quickly now.

Working Monday

Bud was up at about 6:30 this morning, and I hung out with him in his bed for about an hour before he decided he wanted breakfast. I got him some oatmeal, and then headed back to bed for a little while as he finished up his breakfast. When he was done, he came upstairs and joined M-lady and Buster, who were starting to get up.

Bud and Buster were pretty happy as M-lady and I got ready for work. Nanny J arrived at 8:45, and we left a short time later. Buster didn't mind me leaving today, and waved goodbye as I left.

The kids had a good day, and were playing together when I arrived home a little after 5:00. Bud had played with his tents today, and showed me how he'd taken tunnels inside the tents, which was an interesting device. Unfortunately, I had to work more, so after Nanny J left we turned on the TV and I logged into work again.

I was going to fire up a DVD, but Bud saw Good Eats on TV, and asked to watch that. Buster wasn't really excited about the show, but did like trying to play with my computer while I was working. He giggled when I intercepted his attempts to hit the keyboard, and seemed to be having more fun that frustration when I didn't let him actually play on the laptop.

M-lady arrived home a bit later, and got dinner started for the kids. She fed the kids while I worked, although I was able to join for a bit. We all played together a little bit more before it was time to start getting ready for bed.

Bud was a bit difficult getting ready for bed tonight. I ended up putting Buster to bed, which wasn't a problem. M-lady ended up working with Bud for a while, but he eventually took his shower and went to bed. Both kids have slept well so far this evening. I managed to get the big part of my work done, and I look forward to spending a bit more quality time with the kids tomorrow evening.

All Day Breakfast

Buster was up a bit before 8:00, and Bud a short time after. M-lady tended to Buster, and I got up with Bud. We did a pretty standard early morning, and I headed downstairs with the kids around 8:30-ish to start on breakfast. I got the kids started on their standard fare and made some cinnamon rolls for a treat.

After breakfast, we had a quick video chat with Granddad B and Grandma W, which went very well. Both kids were interested in interacting, and Buster didn't press buttons on the keyboard too much.

I took Bud and headed off to Home Depot to pick up some more doorknobs after we wrapped up the call. Bud was fine until we were in the store, and then got upset that they didn't have enough doorknobs in stock to do both the doors to his room. He got a little out of hand, so we came home and he took a timeout in his room.

M-lady had taken Buster out shopping, and they arrived home as Bud and I were installing the doorknobs. We wrapped up that job, and had some lunch a short time later. Lunch was french toast, and M-lady and I hatched the scheme to eat breakfast for all three meals today.

I tried to get Buster to take a nap after lunch, with no success. Bud waited patiently while I sat with Buster, but eventually we all got up and headed downstairs for a bit. After a snack and playing for a little while, M-lady took Buster upstairs for another shot at a nap, and I played with Bud for a bit. We had fun with board and card games before watching a little bit of TV.

M-lady and Buster rejoined us, and we set up a video call and Lego Star Wars gaming session with Cousin LR. While we were playing, Uncle C, Aunt O, and Cousin C arrived for a visit and to have dinner with up.

We had waffles and bacon for dinner, and everyone enjoyed. There was some more playing after dinner, and the visitors took their leave right before we got started on the bedtime routine. I took Buster tonight, who was pretty tired. He fell asleep within about 10 minutes of me setting him down in his crib. Bud took a little longer to fall asleep, but both kids have slept quietly so far tonight.

It was fun seeing Buster and Cousin C play together/near each other. They're close to acknowledging each other as entities.

Sushi Monsters

The kids were up around 8:00 this morning, and I got Bud downstairs and started on breakfast before M-lady joined us with Buster. I took the opportunity to snooze for a little bit longer as M-lady supervised breakfast and some play time.

I switched places with M-lady at about 9:30, and kept an eye on the kids for about half an hour. We played in the tents a little bit, and generally had a good time. Bud was really excited about having Friend M over, who was scheduled to arrive at 10:00. Around then, I handed Buster and the con back to M-lady, and snoozed for a few more minutes.

Friend M arrived, dropped off by his father, and after a few hesitant moments, the kids ran off to play together. They had a great time, and Friend M didn't want to go home when his mother came to retrieve him at about noon. M-lady fed Bud and Buster some lunch while I was out for a bike ride.

The fam was happy to see me when I got home, and the kids snacked on cereal while I had some lunch. Around 2:00, I set Bud up to watch a little more Riverdance and put Buster down for a nap. M-lady went out shopping, so I had some good one-on-one time with Bud. We worked on a puzzle, and played some games on the computer until Buster woke after about an hour.

After the kids had another quick snack, we loaded up and headed over to Target for a quick errand. The boys were really good on the trip, although we forgot to have Bud use the bathroom before we left, so we had a quick dash to the Target restroom shortly after we arrived.

We played outside for a bit after we got home, and both kids really enjoyed running around on the lawn. Bud played with a new, small lacrosse stick we got for him, and Buster spent most of the time carrying around a plastic bat and ball. Buster did chase a ball out into the street once, so we'll have to keep an eye out for that and start teaching him not to go into the street.

We eventually came inside, and I headed out to pick up sushi for dinner a short time later. The kids both devoured their sushi. Bus asked to try some Unagi, and decided he liked it. I think so too, but I shared my Unagi with him. Buster managed to get su rice all over his hands and just about everything else, so I got the kids into the shower shortly after dinner.

After getting the kids clean, there was time for one more snack before the bedtime routine. Both kids went to bed without too much trouble. Bud was asleep by about 8:45, and both kids have slept well so far this evening.

Growing Comprehension

The kids slept well last night, which was nice. M-lady was up with Buster at nearly 8:00, and Bud was up a little bit later. They had been up a bit late the previous night, which explains the sleeping in a little bit. I helped Bud get dressed before Nanny J arrived, and headed for work as Buster went to get some breakfast.

The kids apparently had a good day, with a report of lots of playing "phone conversation". I think both kids pretended to talk on the phone with Nanny J and with each other.

M-lady got home to take the kids at about 5:15, and was working on getting dinner ready when I arrived home around 6:00. There was a package which had arrived for me earlier in the day on the stand by the door, and while Bud was pointing out that a package arrived for me, Buster toddled up, grabbed the package, and handed it to me.

Buster has been showing increased comprehension every day. He clearly understands quite a bit, and he's constantly surprising us by reacting appropriately to verbal requests and commands. We really need to keep in mind that he understands a lot more than he can communicate himself.

After dinner, the boys and I watched some Riverdance at Bud's request. While we were watching, I managed to get all their fingernails clipped. Buster's pretty good about presenting his hands for clipping nails, until he gets distracted and wants to play with something. This evening I got through 9.5 nails before he wandered off. I managed to get the last half nail finished a bit later, though.

We got started on the bedtime routine a little late, as Babysitter M arrived. M-lady and I were heading out to a dance, and Babysitter M was going to hold down the fort while we were out. Bud was pretty good about going to bed, but Buster was a bit restless. He eventually quieted down and M-lady and I made our escape. Buster apparently cried for a few minutes once after we left, but fell asleep on his own pretty quickly.

Growing Sociable

Buster slept a bit better last night, which was nice. Bud did wander into our bedroom around 1:00am, and I slept with him in his room until about 3:00. M-lady slept in Buster's room for a bit in the morning, and everyone was up and going by about 7:30.

I took Bud to school today, which was fun. Bud was able to direct me to his classroom, and joined his class without much prompting. The bilingual school has really been good for him: he's using quite a bit more Mandarin at home.

I got home right around 5:15, and after we bid Nanny J good evening, I sat down with the kids in front of Mulan, and pulled out my computer to continue working. Bud enjoyed the parts of the film we watched, but wanted to skip all the parts he thought were scary. Buster also enjoyed watching, particularly the scenes with the horse (which he thought was hilarious), but ended up being more interested in my computer screen. His interest made working a bit more difficult.

M-lady arrived home a short time later, and got some dinner ready for the kids. I helped out with dinner, and both kids ate well. After dinner, we got things ready for company, as my team was coming over to play some Rock Band.

We had about ten of my team members show up, which made for a busy kitchen and playroom. Buster was perfectly happy being held by M-lady or myself, and even tolerated being on foot a little bit with the crowd around him. Bud held himself apart a little bit more, but was very interested in watching us play a bit of Rock Band. He also interacted with some of the folks nicely.

Buster took a while to fall asleep due to the noise, but did finally drop off. Bud didn't get into bed until nearly 9:00, but slept solidly once he dropped off. M-lady was good enough to put both the kids to bed.

Mid-Day Visit

Buster again was a little restless, and I slept with him from about 5:00 on. He woke at about 7:00, and I got him into a clean diaper before we hung out together in the hexagon for a bit.

Bud was up a short time later, and got dressed on his own, albeit at his own pace. M-lady had an early-ish meeting, and headed for work shortly after 8:00. I plopped Buster in his crib for a little bit while I shaved.

Buster was a bit whiny this morning, in the hexagon and his crib, and was a bit reluctant to have some breakfast. I showed him a toasted Eggo, though, and he pretty much sprinted for his highchair. Bud also had an Eggo, although he requested blueberries (as was shown on the box). Fortunately, we had a lot of blueberries in the freezer, so I warmed some up and put them on his waffle. After he was finished, I instructed him to go brush his teeth to get the blue out of his mouth.

Nanny J arrived as Buster was eating, and I packed up and headed off to a doctor's appointment. The kids apparently went to the park in the morning.

I came home after my doc appointment a little before lunchtime, and Bud told me about his morning. He recounted going to the park and making a friend, although he said his new friend was mean to him. Such is 4 year old society.

I was at work late today, so M-lady took care of the kids in the evening. Apparently the evening went very smoothly, and both kids were good. Buster had stopped whining, so he seems to have gotten that out of his system in the morning. They watched some of Mulan together, which both boys seemed to enjoy quite a bit.

The kids went to sleep easily, which was nice for M-lady. I arrived home around 9:00, and both kids have slept quietly so far.

Clear Signs

Buster slept a bit restlessly last night, and M-lady slept in his room with him quite a bit. I went to sit with him a little before 7:00, as he was up and looking happy in his crib. I changed a poopy diaper (apparently just a few minutes after M-lady changed a poopy diaper), and let him run around a bit when Bud woke around 7:15.

At about 7:30, I loaded the grandparents into the car and took them off to the airport. Bud was being a little grumpy, and refused to say goodbye, but Buster gave them a wave. M-lady got the kids some breakfast in my absence.

The kids were wrapping up breakfast when I got back, and I helped with the standard morning routine for a little while as Bud was getting ready for school and Nanny J arrived to watch Buster. I headed for work around 9:00.

Bud apparently had a good day at school, and was using more Chinese words at home this evening, which is encouraging. Buster has also been signing much more clearly in the past couple days, probably a result of communicating with the grandparents for the weekend. I saw him indicate 'All Done' more clearly than I've ever seen him do that sign before.

I got home around 6:30, and joined dinner already in progress. After eating, I sat with the boys and watched a little bit of Winnie-the-Pooh, which Buster thought was pretty funny. At about 7:30 we broke and started the bedtime routines.

Bud was reasonably tractable through the bedtime routine, and after having a big snack around 8:00, I got him into bed with the lights out around 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster has again been a little restless this evening, but hopefully will sleep a bit better tonight.

Coming Home

The kids apparently had a great time with Granddad B and Grandma Nese over the weekend... We needn't have worried. Buster apparently went to the window a few times after Nanny J left on Friday to see if she was really gone, but wasn't particularly fussy. I think both kids were on their best behavior.

The kids had fun outings with the grandparents, heading to the park, the Tech, and Fry's, among other venues. The kids were perhaps a little spoiled, although they seemed to behave well enough to deserve it.

We arrived home last night after everyone was in bed. The kids slept through the night, and Bud wandered in to find us around 7:00. I got up and hung out with him for a bit, while M-lady took care of a waking Buster a bit later. M-lady took both kids downstairs around 8:00, and I snoozed for a few more minutes before joining them and the grandparents downstairs.

The kids and grandparents were presented with gifts from our travels. The grandparents got chocolates, and the kids got hand-made felt balls (squishy and safe for indoor throwing). Buster really liked his ball, and carried it around with him for much the rest of the day, occasionally throwing it and saying, "Ball!". Bud seemed a little less excited by his ball, but he did managed to score a couple of chocolates.

Granddad B and I headed out to Fry's for a little while in the early afternoon, and Bud declined the offer to accompany us. He instead played at home with M-lady and Grandma Nese. When we returned, the whole troop headed out to the Cupertino Library, where we played in the fountains on the warmish afternoon.

The library has a set of 30 fountains, in three rows of ten, set into the ground in such a way that kids can easily play with and in them on hot days. Bud wasn't super interested in getting wet, but Buster was. The fountains randomly changed their output, so went from a few inches high to over six feet high without much warning. They got pretty loud as the water flow increased as well. Buster was a little frightened at first, but eventually warmed up to them, and had a lot of fun running around and playing in the water.

Bud took the grandparents inside the library for a bit, where they had a good time looking at the fish in the large aquarium housed there. Eventually we got Buster dried off, and all headed for home again.

We weren't at home very long before heading off to Chevy's for dinner, where everybody ate well. Buster was having a good time running around outside when it was time to go, and protested getting into the car again. So the kids and the grandparents and I all played outside together for a bit when we got home.

While I was examining some of the strawberries growing in our front yard, Buster must have grabbed one and gobbled it up, along with a healthy fistful of dirt. I turned to look at him and found his face and hand covered with mud and red juice. So we headed inside for a shower, much to Buster's dismay.

He enjoyed the shower once he got in, and I got Bud cleaned up as well. After the shower, I got Bud into PJs and we played some Lego Star Wars before having a snack and getting ready for bed. Bud said a provisional goodbye to the grandparents, as they'll be leaving reasonably early tomorrow.

Both kids went to bed without too much trouble, although Buster has woken a few times. He's gone back to sleep pretty quickly each time, though.

Visit Begun

Buster slept pretty restlessly last night, requiring a lot of sitting with to keep him asleep. Bud slept fine. The kids woke a bit after 7:00, and M-lady handled them in the morning. I had worked through the night, and wasn't very useful for the morning routine.

M-lady got Bud to clean up all his toys downstairs, which was quite a feat. Apparently Bud really got into the cleaning up, and they had a good time together. They had a pretty early breakfast, and were all set for the morning by the time the cleaners and Nanny J arrived. M-lady took Bud to school around 9:00ish.

I arrived home around 3:00, with Granddad B and Grandma Nese with me. I'd picked them up at the airport. Buster was snoozing, but Bud was pretty excited to see them. They played with the kids in the afternoon, while I wrapped up some work stuff. I heard some happy play sounds while I was working. I eventually headed down to join them around 5:15, when Nanny J took her leave.

I popped the chicken in the oven which Nanny J had prepared, and it was ready to eat about 40 minutes later. M-lady had arrived home, and we all had a nice dinner together. After dinner there was some climbing on Daddy play in the living room before we started the bedtime routine.

Granddad B observed as I talked Bud into the shower, got him cleaned up and into PJs, and we headed downstairs for a snack. Bud got a bedtime story from Granddad B, and was in bed and ready to sleep by about 8:30.

M-lady put Buster to bed around the same time. Both kids have slept quietly so far, which is nice.

M-lady and I will be off for the weekend, so I'll probably condense the next few days into a single post after I get back. Sorry for the brief blackout.

Helping Out

Buster slept a little restlessly last night, and M-lady was in his room with him from about 3:30 to 6:30. He was making noise again about twenty minutes after she left, so I snoozed in his room for about half an hour before we got up, changed his diaper, and sat together in the hexagon for a bit.

While we were there, Bud roused M-lady, and Buster started crying for M-lady as soon as he heard her voice. We found M-lady reading a story to Bud in his bed, and Buster wanted in on the action.

I managed to snooze for another 20 minutes or so as M-lady got the kids downstairs and breakfasted. The kids were playing happily upstairs when Nanny J arrived, and I trooped down with them to answer the door. I headed off to work a few minutes later. As I was putting my shoes on, Buster got Nanny J and me to put his shoes on him as well. He followed me right out the door, and waved to me (with Nanny J's help) as I left.

The kids were happy to see me when I got home around 5:00, and Buster was having fun running around with a dry washcloth, wiping things. Bud wanted to play with Play-Doh, so I got him set up. Nanny J took her leave a few minutes later, and we all played together for a few minutes before M-lady arrived home.

When M-lady got home, she took her shoes off and started unloading her stuff. She went back to put her shoes away and discovered that Buster had grabber her shoes and was working on putting them away in the right place on the shoe rack for her. He was very helpful.

We watched a little bit of Little Einsteins before dinner. Both kids ate pretty well, and Bud requested to watch High School Musical after dinner. He and M-lady watched a bit, as I read stories to Buster.

Bud got a little combative around shower time, so bedtime ended up being a bit abrupt. He was in bed right around 8:00, and fell asleep on his own a short time later.

Buster has been very restless so far this evening, and has woken a number of times. He'll fall back to sleep pretty quickly with a parent nearby, but hopefully we won't have to sleep next to him all night.

Cranky Evening

Bud wet the bed again a couple of times last night, and M-lady got up with the boys early this morning. I joined her shortly after 8:00, and got Bud started on breakfast a bit later. M-lady took Bud off to school around 9:00, after Nanny J had arrived, and I headed off to work around the same time.

The kids were happy to see me when I got home a little after 5:00. Buster was playing happily with Bud's old toy phone, pressing buttons and watching the lights. We said goodbye to Nanny J and watched a little bit of Cirque Du Soleil before setting up a video call with Granddad B and Grandma Nese.

The kids were pretty good through the call, if a little rambunctious. M-lady arrived home toward the end of the call, and a few minutes later Buster had a bit of a meltdown. We wrapped up the call to get some dinner, and Buster continued to be cranky for much the rest of the evening, even after eating a solid dinner.

Bud also ate well, and I read a story with him for a while after dinner. He eventually had a small altercation with Buster, but after we got that smoothed over Bud and I got a snack and started the bedtime routine. Bud was good about taking his shower, getting into PJs, and then wanted another snack.

M-lady lay down with Bud for a bit while he fell asleep a bit after 8:00. Bud went to bed without a diaper again tonight, and both kids have slept pretty well so far. I'm not sure why Buster was a bit cranky tonight, but hopefully will regain his cheer soon.

Otter Pops

Bud wet the bed a couple times last night again, and Buster made some noise early as well. We were all up a bit before 8:00, and the morning was pretty standard. Nanny J had a doctor's appointment in the morning, so M-lady stayed home to watch the kids through the mid-morning.

I arrived home around 5:00, and managed to sneak upstairs while the kids were having a snack. I usually can't get upstairs without having both kids trailing me, so it was nice to be able to put my stuff down before taking over for Nanny J.

The kids and I played together for a little while before settling in front of the TV to watch some Cirque Du Soleil. A bit after 6:00 we got started on dinner. We were just getting started on the eating part when M-lady arrived home to join us.

Both kids ate well, and after dinner we played a bit more before having otter pops. We tend to have them on hot days, and both the kids enjoy them. Bud gets his own, and I share mine with Buster.

The bedtime routine went pretty well, with M-lady handling Bud's shower and bedtime prep, and I put Buster to bed. I brushed Buster's teeth tonight for the first time; M-lady apparently brushed his teeth last night. Buster thinks it's pretty funny, and giggled a lot as I got the toothbrush in there.

Buster and I read stories together until a little after 8:00, and then he went to bed without much trouble. Bud was asleep a short time later.

Indy Points

Bud woke us a couple of times during the night having wet the bed, but we were expecting that. The first time was at about 2:45, and M-lady and I worked together to get him cleaned up. Buster was noisy once around 6:00, and I was actually getting up with him around 7:00, having slept in his room for about an hour, when M-lady was cleaning Bud up for the second time.

M-lady watched the kids for the morning while I snoozed for a bit. I joined them at about 9:30, and we all played together for a little while. Around 10:00ish, I put Buster down for a nap while M-lady and Bud worked on an Indiana Jones satchel for Bud's burgeoning Indiana Jones costume.

I made a quick outing while Buster was sleeping, and got back as everyone was having lunch. We all enjoyed lunch, and afterward played together a little bit before loading up in the car and heading off to visit Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C. We were hoping Buster would nap a little bit in the car, but M-lady and Bud fell asleep instead. Buster was awake and happy when we arrived, while Bud was a little groggy.

Cousin C had also just woken from a nap when we arrived, and was a bit wary of us in his space. Bud and Buster were pretty happy to check out Cousin C's toys, though, and the kids actually ended up all having a good time.Bud enjoyed being Indiana Jones on Cousin C's rocking horse, and Buster and Cousin C had fun rearranging Aunt O and Uncle C's books on the lower bookshelves.

We headed for home when Bud started getting a little grouchy, and decided to pick up a pizza on the way home. Everyone ate well, and it occurred to me that we're not too far off of needing more than one pizza to feed the family. Dinner was really early, so there were a couple of snacks before bed.

Bud asked to watch the Cirque Du Soleil documentary showing the making of Ka, one of their permanent shows in Las Vegas. We promised to take Bud to see the show sometime. He was really captivated by the documentary. I had to read the subtitles to him, though, since a good portion of the interviews are in French.

Bud was a little bit recalcitrant during the bedtime routine, and didn't want to get in the shower once he'd gotten undressed. He ran around naked for a while. Once we got him into the shower, he was pretty good, though. He was in bed fairly early (a benefit of the early dinner), and asleep by about 8:30. We're trying to go diaperless again tonight. Buster fell asleep around 8:00 as well, and both kids have slept well so far.

No Diaper

M-lady was up with the kids a little before I was this morning, but I got up to help Bud get dressed a bit before 8:00. I had a haircut appointment at 9:00, so left M-lady in charge at about 8:30. The kids had breakfast with M-lady, then hung out for a little while before all heading out to Target and nearby stores to run some errands.

They arrived home around 10:45, and Buster was pretty tired. He was still clutching his balloon, but I managed to get him to release it to take a nap. M-lady headed out to run some more errands while Bud and I hung out together, read some stories, and played on the computer a bit. Buster woke around noon, right as we were heading downstairs to get some lunch.

Both kids ate pretty well, although Buster really ate a huge lunch, cleaning up some of Bud's lunch in the process. We all watched a bit of Blue Man Group before M-lady arrived home near 2:00.

I worked in the garage with Bud for about an hour before coming in and getting ready for my second try at the haircut (the stylist had to cancel due to a conflict for the earlier appointment). Bud wanted to come with me, but he wouldn't have liked sitting in the shop waiting for me. M-lady tried to put Buster down for an afternoon nap, without success.

We had some dinner when I got home, and I took Buster straight to the shower after dinner, since he managed to get corn and spaghetti all over himself. He did a pretty good job holding the corncob on his own, though. Bud showered with me after Buster was done, so everyone was clean before starting the evening routine.

We watched a little more TV together, and then got snacks. Buster was getting really tired, and M-lady managed to get him to sleep shortly after 8:00. Bud was in bed by about 8:15, and asleep a short time after that.

Bud agreed to trying to sleeping without a diaper tonight, so we put a waterproof pad down on his bed. We'll see if he manages to wake up. I expect we'll need to change a few sets of sheets over the next couple of days, but I hope he figures out the waking up to pee at night thing.

Comfort Balloon

Buster was up around 7:00 this morning, and M-lady entertained him until we started getting ready, around 8:00. Bud was also up a bit before 8:00. M-lady managed to snooze for a few minutes while I looked after the kids while I got ready. At 8:30, she got the kids some breakfast while I took a phone call.

At about 9:15, M-lady and I got Buster loaded into the car and headed out for a doctor's appointment. Buster was reasonably cooperative, checked out just fine, and didn't mind the shots too much. He was pretty tired afterward, though, and fell asleep on the drive home. I headed for work after laying him down in his crib, where he napped for a while.

M-lady got a haircut today, and Buster was a little frightened when she got home. She quickly donned a hat, and Buster was fine. When she took the hat off a little later, Buster had clearly identified her, and didn't have any more problems.

After I got home, around 5:30, we all played together for a few minutes before loading up and heading off to Red Robin for dinner. Bud didn't sit still very well, but didn't get into any trouble, either. Buster grabbed a balloon, and played with it for the rest of the evening. Both kids ate well, and we headed home happy and full.

After watching a little bit of Blue Man Group at home, we set up a quick video chat with Ama and Agu, which went pretty well. The bedtime routine was a little tough for Bud, who was a bit wired. I handled Buster this evening, who was tired, so it wasn't too much trouble putting him to bed, except that he didn't want to give up the balloon. He stubbornly clung to and cuddled with it while I rocked him to sleep. I was finally able to extract it after he was half asleep.

M-lady managed to wrangle Bud into the shower and into bed after a bit. Both kids have slept well so far this evening.

Fireman

We got up this morning a bit before 8:00, and I got Bud started on getting dressed. Buster had slept in until about 7:45 as well, which was nice. The morning was pretty standard, although Bud was excited about getting ready to go to his new school.

It was a bit drizzly outside this morning, and I got a bit dampish as I changed Buster's car seat in Nanny J's car from rear-facing to forward-facing. Nanny J took Buster and followed M-lady and Bud to the school while I headed off to work. The drop off apparently went very smoothly, which makes me really proud of Bud, going into a new situation like that.

He apparently had a good day at school, although he said he didn't make any new friends, and mostly played by himself. However, they apparently had a visit from a fireman (or perhaps multiple firemen) today, and got a guided tour of the firetruck and talk about his job. When I got home around 5:00, Bud was dressed up as a fireman, and had assembled his PlayHuts to make a firetruck.

After Nanny J took her leave, we set up a video call with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Both kids had fun interacting with the grandparents. Buster really seems to get that he can talk to them now, and shows things he's holding to the screen. Bud showed off his fireman outfit and truck.

M-lady arrived home as we wrapped up the chat, and we all played for a little while. M-lady got dinner on the table as I watched a Baby Einstein video with the kids. Buster wasn't really interested in the meal, but I scrambled an egg for him, which he gobbled up.

After dinner, Bud and I headed out to get gas in my car, which was running on fumes. M-lady baked some cookies we had in the freezer while we were out, so we had nice warm cookies when we got back for dessert.

It was getting on in the evening, so I got Bud into the shower. He wanted to play a video game, so we played a little bit of Lego Indiana Jones before bed in lieu of a story or video. He didn't want to actually go to bed, but I put him in his bed shortly after 8:30. He fell asleep on his own pretty quickly, as did Buster. Both kids have slept quietly so far tonight.

Gun Trouble

Buster was up a bit before 8:00, and Bud actually slept in until a bit after 8:00. M-lady tended Buster for a little while in the morning, but needed to head off to work a bit early, around 8:30. We got the kids downstairs and eating breakfast before she took off and Nanny J arrived.

The kids had a good day, although Bud has admitted to getting bored during the day. Fortunately, we'll be starting him in a new preschool for a few weeks tomorrow, so that should occupy him a bit.

I got home around 5:00, and the kids seemed pretty happy to see me. After Nanny J left, we had a great video call with Grandma W and Granddad B. Buster was very interactive, and a bit less obsessed with pressing all the keys on the laptop keyboard. Bud also had a good time chatting.

Bud plays with guns quite a bit, though, and had been warned a few times about pretending to shoot Buster or myself. I eventually took his (Lego) gun away, and he got a bit upset and stormed off, just as M-lady arrived home. This proved too much distraction for Buster as well, so we decided to end the call. I was able to rope Buster back to wave goodbye, though.

We all had dinner after that, in shifts, as M-lady and Bud had some dinner while I read stories with Buster. I ate after that, and finally Buster decided he was hungry and M-lady fed him while I gave Bud a shower. Bud was pretty good through the shower and bedtime routine, and asleep by 8:45.

Buster was again a little restless while falling asleep, but both kids have slept pretty well so far this evening.

Quiet Evening

Bud rolled me out of bed a little after 7:00, but was willing to hang out in his bed for about half an hour before he started getting anxious to get up. I got him started on getting dressed, and we headed downstairs and got some breakfast a little after 8:00.

M-lady brought Buster down around the same time, and Buster shared my oatmeal with me. Nanny J arrived a short time later, and M-lady and I headed off to work. As usual, Bud gave me a big hug goodbye, and Buster tried to escape as I opened the door to leave.

The kids apparently had a good day, and M-lady was already home when I arrived a short time after 5:00. M-lady had been by a prospective pre-school for Bud which he'll attend for about a month before his regular school kicks into gear. It's a bi-lingual program, so hopefully he'll get some more practice with Mandarin.

We all played together a little bit in and around the Play-Hut tents Bud had set up in the living room before getting started on some dinner. The kids ate pretty well, and after dinner M-lady headed upstairs for a nap while I hung out with the kids a bit. We read a few stories before watching a Little Einsteins video until snack time. I knew it was snack time because Buster went into the kitchen and came back with the cereal box that I'd left on the table.

Bud had an otter pop, and Buster and I shared one. Buster ate a solid snack, and was getting a little tired, so I handed him off to M-lady and rejoined Bud. We finished up the snack and did a pretty standard bedtime routine.

Bud was in bed a little after 8:30, and fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster took a little longer to fall asleep tonight, but both kids have slept quietly so far.

A Day Away

Buster again required some company during the night, and M-lady and I took shifts. I was up with him at about 7:30, and Bud was up around the same time, although he managed to entertain himself for a while. The kids did the usual morning and breakfast routine, and Nanny J arrived a bit before 9:00.

Bud didn't want me to go to work, but was very interested in watching me tie my shoes this morning. So far he's only had velcro or elastic closure shoes, so he hasn't had the opportunity to learn how to tie his shoes. I let him know that I would try to be home as early as I could.

Unfortunately, work kept me late, and I didn't get home until about 8:00. M-lady had arrived home to take the kids from Nanny J, and they'd had a fine evening. M-lady had gotten Bud to run around a lot by saying, "Ready, Set, Go!" Buster had run around as well, saying, "Go! Go! Go!"

M-lady was hanging out with the kids in hexagon when I got home. Bud was naked, ready to take a shower. He came up and gave me a hug, and we got started on getting him into the shower. He was a little undirectable, partly because he was excited to see me. I finally got him into the shower, though, and then into PJs and bed.

We had a nice story and video time, and he was almost asleep when I left the room at about 8:45. Buster fell asleep a bit before that, and did cry out once a little after 10:00, but has slept well otherwise.

Getting Out

Buster woke early this morning, and M-lady slept with him on the couch in his room for a while. He woke 'for real' at about 7:30. Bud also got up around then, and was tended to by Ama and Agu.

Ama and Agu left for Aunt O's around 9:00ish, so we all said our goodbyes this morning. It was great having them here this weekend, and M-lady and I even managed to get out and see a movie last night.

Around mid-morning M-lady took off to do the grocery shopping, and I kept an eye on the boys. Buster went down for a morning nap around the same time, and Bud stayed busy playing with SesameStreet.org, so it was a pretty mellow time and I got a little work done. Buster woke around noon, hungry for lunch, and ate a whole lot.

After M-lady got home, she and Bud had some lunch as well. I packed up Bud a short time later, and we headed out to the mall so I could get the jeans I wasn't able to get last weekend. Bud was great, and thought the dressing room was really exciting. After getting that errand out of the way, we picked up some kettle corn for a treat and headed home.

We had tentatively planned to all go out to a Bhuddist festival in Palo Alto so the kids could see some Taiko drumming, but Buster was being a bit grumpy, so M-lady took Bud. They had a great time, and Bud really enjoyed the drumming. Now he's interested in taking Taiko classes.

Buster and I had a good time hanging out at home, mostly reading books and watching a little bit of TV. I put on one of Bud's old favorite DVDs, a Baby Einstein: Meet The Orchestra. Buster seemed to like it well enough, but we shut it off after about 20 minutes when he brought me his bib and tray from the kitchen to let me know he was hungry.

He ate a solid dinner, and was much happier afterward. We played together a bit more before M-lady and Bud arrived home. The rest of us had some dinner, and then then bedtime routine was in full swing. M-lady did the early routine for Bud, and I handled Buster. We switched to put the kids to bed. Bud was pretty good about going to bed, and fell asleep before 8:30. Both kids have slept quietly so far.

To The Fair

Buster woke up a little early, but was willing to let M-lady snooze in his room for a bit. Bud woke and headed downstairs to hang out with Ama and Agu. I managed to sleep in until about 8:30, at which point Bud came in to let me know that breakfast was ready. I headed downstairs to join the kids and family, and had some breakfast. Buster was still being a little grumpy, but not too much.

I had to do some work, but I helped bundle up the kids and get everyone ready for a trip to the local county fair. They apparently had a good time, checking out the livestock, and some of the collections and dioramas on display. Bud liked a diorama made from Lego in particular, although he was able to report on the cows, pigs, rabbits, etc. Buster was apparently a little frightened by the cows, which really are very large, smelly, and potentially noisy animals when viewed up close.

They arrived home around 12:30, as I was finishing up my lunch. I helped with the kids lunch a bit, and then took Buster to see if he'd take a nap. We tried to sleep from about 2:00 to 3:00, and he didn't sleep at all, as far as I could tell. I discovered he'd had a huge poop when I got him up, and after getting him cleaned up, he was much happier for the remainder of the day.

Buster started eating again, so he may have just been a bit backed up. The kids and M-lady and I had a fun video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Both the kids participated, although they both wandered off to pursue other activities pretty quickly. After the chat, I tried one more time to get Bud to nap, again unsuccessfully.

Buster ate really well at dinner, although he covered himself in pizza sauce. After dinner I got the boys into the shower. Buster and I had fun, but it was tough getting the pizza sauce out of his nose. Buster was happy to get out and let Bud take a turn when he was all cleaned up.

After the shower, I got Bud into his PJs, and we headed downstairs for a snack. Overall, the bedtime routine was pretty smooth, and Bud was in bed by about 8:30. Buster was in bed around the same time, and both kids were quickly asleep.
