Grumpy Baby

Buster woke up pretty early this morning, screeching as M-lady tried to sneak out of the room and get back to bed. I went in to calm him down, and Ama came up as well. I think it was a little early for Buster to be dealing with Ama, because he was not happy at all. Eventually I calmed him down, we snoozed a little more, and then got up and we all headed downstairs for breakfast. Once Buster was in his chair and eating, he was fine with hanging out with Ama. I headed back to bed for a while.

Bud got up and made his way downstairs on his own, and was playing with Agu when I left for work. The kids seem to have had a good day with all the attention from the grandparents. M-lady managed to get home before I did, around 4:00, and was able to play with the kids a little before dinner.

Buster was a bit grumpy by dinnertime, perhaps from waking up a little early. I arrived home shortly after dinner, around 6:30 or so, and hung out with the kids a little before eating. Buster was a bit grumpy all evening while I was home. He didn't eat very well, although I managed to get him to have some cereal.

He seemed totally tuckered out around 7:30, and was having a bit of a snit in his crib (with me trying to soothe him) when M-lady took over for me. She managed to calm him down, and they hung out together in the hexagon for a while before he went to sleep.

Agu did most of the bedtime routine with Bud, although Bud asked me to read him a story before bed. I took a break from work to hang out with him a little for just about the first time that day. Bud fell asleep a bit after I turned the lights out, around 8:30. Both kids have slept quietly so far, and hopefully will sleep in a little later tomorrow.

Goin' Walkabout

Bud got me out of be around 7:30 this morning, we hung out a bit before M-lady and Buster were up. We joined them upstairs a bit later, and I got started on getting ready for the day. The cleaners arrived a bit after 8:00, and the kids were eating breakfast when Nanny J arrived around 8:45.

Bud apparently put his shoes on and walked out the front door to play outside without informing Nanny J today. Nanny J talked with him about the need to tell her where he was going, and not to play out front without some supervision (yet). We'll probably need to reinforce that over the next few days.

I got home just a little early today, around 4:30ish, and saw the kids and Nanny J playing on the front lawn as I arrived. A few seconds after I pulled up, Ama and Agu arrived, and we helped get them unloaded and inside. The kids were very happy to see them.

M-lady arrived home a short time after Nanny J left, and Ama and Agu prepared a great dinner a few minutes later. The kids ate pretty well, and we all had fun playing in the living room for a little while after dinner.

I took my leave to nap for a little while during the beginning of the bedtime routine, and Agu was kind enough to see Bud through his bath and into PJs. I supervised a snack and story time, and Bud was in bed and asleep a bit before 9:00. Both kids have slept well so far tonight.

On Nature

Bud rolled me out of bed a bit before 7:00, and asked that I take him downstairs for breakfast about 15 minutes later. He ate a bowl of oatmeal, and then joined me in the playroom as I lay down on the couch. I asked him to play quietly, so he started in playing with his pots and pans.

Buster was up a bit before 8:00, and M-lady attended to him. Bud did a good job of getting himself dressed, and both kids seemed to be in good spirits when Nanny J arrived and M-lady and I took off for work. They had a pretty quiet day with Nanny J.

I arrived home shortly after 5:00, and after bidding Nanny J good evening, we all played a little bit before sitting down in front of the TV. There was a nature program on about octopuses, which Bud found fascinating. The show followed the life of a female octopus, but I switched to the Animusic DVD before they got to her death scene. As it was, I think Bud was a little upset when he saw the codfish attacking the octopus.

Buster was really anxious to see what I was doing as I started to make dinner, and insisted that I hold him up. It was a little tough to prepare the stir-fry one-handed, but fortunately M-lady arrived just as I was firing things up. The kids were happy to see her, and Bud told her all about the octopus show.

The kids had a pretty good dinner, and we watched a little bit of dance before getting started on the bedtime routine. I got Bud showered, snacked, and in bed by about 8:30. He fell asleep pretty quickly. M-lady seemed to have similar luck with Buster, and both kids have slept well so far this evening.

The Unusual

Buster woke around 2:00am, and demanded someone stay with him in his room while he went back to sleep. I was in his room until nearly 3:00, when M-lady relieved me. She apparently slept in his room for a couple of hours. Buster and Bud were up this morning a bit before 8:00, and M-lady handled the first wave with the kids. I was up a little after 8:00 to help out.

Nanny J had to take the day off to handle a routine medical procedure, so I took the day off work to watch the kids. Unfortunately, having just cared for the kids over the weekend, I was out of ideas for daytime activities. I was also hoping to get a little bit of work in the afternoon if I could, although I didn't really get the chance.

After breakfast, I packed up the kids and we headed out to run some quick errands: I got gas in my car, and we hit the grocery store. Both kids were really well behaved, although Buster tried to grab just about anything within arms reach of his perch in the cart, and his arms are getting longer. Bud was cheerful and helpful.

We got back around 11:00, and Buster was starting to get a little grumpy, so I put him down for a nap. He slept about 90 minutes, during which time Bud and I played some card games (Go Fish and War again), and read some stories together. We got started on some lunch when Buster woke and joined us.

Both kids ate pretty well for lunch, and we played a little bit on SesameStreet.org after lunch. Buster was a little grumpy later in the afternoon, and I doled out another Star Wars book to Bud for him to look at while I tried to get Buster to nap.

I didn't have any success getting Buster to nap, and when we emerged from Buster's room, I found Bud had been pilfering treats. Bud went to his room for a while, and I hung out with Buster for a bit in the playroom, reading stories and tooling around a bit.

Bud declined to come out of his room when I invited him to come hang out with Buster and me, and ended up falling asleep in his bed. He was still napping when M-lady returned home, and apparently still grumpy with me. I was unable to rouse him, and M-lady had better luck.

We had a pretty mellow dinner, and watched some of SYTYCD from last week after dinner. At about 7:30 M-lady managed to wrangle Bud into the shower, while I fed Buster a snack. I did the bedtime routine with Buster, and he passed out almost as soon as I deposited him in his bed, around 8:15. Bud also went to sleep pretty quickly, and both kids have slept quietly so far this evening.

The Ususal

Bud and Buster were up around 8:00 this morning. Bud wandered in having wet the bed a little, and M-lady and I got his sheets changed and him into dry clothes. The rest of the morning was pretty standard. Nanny J arrived a bit before 9:00, and M-lady and I headed for work.

The kids had a good time with Nanny J, and played with the water table in the back yard. They apparently both got pretty dirty, and had baths during the day. Bud, however, was very sweaty from running around the living room when I got home, so I scheduled him for a shower before bed.

After Nanny J left, the kids and I played and read stories for a bit before having some dinner. Both kids ate well, and Buster only got partly covered in broccoli, rather than entirely covered, as he did the previous night. Bud was good about eating, too.

After dinner, we roughhoused a little bit before settling down and watching some Animusic. Buster was pretty captivated, as Bud used to be. Around 7:30 we started in on snacks, and M-lady arrived home a short time later.

I got Bud into the shower a little after 8:00, and he was in bed around 8:30. He fell asleep on his own pretty quickly. M-lady managed Buster's bedtime, and both kids have slept quietly so far this evening.

The Return of Mommy

Bud woke briefly this morning at about 5:00, and then Buster woke for a few minutes at about 5:15. Both kids slept until about 8:00 after that.

We all got up and got going and had some breakfast together in a pretty usual morning. I decided to try and get to the mall with the kids, since I'm in need of a new pair of jeans. We got all set and hit the road, and arrived at the mall around 10:45.

Unfortunately, the stores didn't open until 11:00, so we wandered around a mostly empty mall for a few minutes. We stopped to play by the fountain for a little while, and Buster really enjoyed that. I tried to catch a picture of him up on his tip-toes to see the fountain, but wasn't quite fast enough. He complained a bit when I finally reined him in and we swung through the Levi's store.

They didn't have the same style as I was trying to replace, and I wasn't about to try on new pants with the two kids in tow, so I decided to come back another day less encumbered and we headed to lunch. Bud decided that Hot Dog on a Stick would be good, so we got a couple of corn dogs and some fries. Bud ate well, and Buster had the banana and cheese I brought for him, as well as some fries and about half my dog.

We headed towards home after that, with a stop at 7-Eleven to get a Slurpee for Bud. Buster really wanted some of Bud's Slurpee, but I managed to keep him away from it while Bud finished up. Buster was getting really tired, and went down for a nap at about 1:00.

M-lady arrived a short time later, while Bud and I were coloring. Bud was pretty excited to see her back, and we had some fun hanging out together and catching up while M-lady settled in again. M-lady brought a new Tag reader book for Bud, which he enjoyed quite a bit. It's a Spider-Man book, so it may count as his first comic book.

Buster woke up after about a 90 minute nap, and was also happy to see M-lady. He got a little bee-shaped car, which he played with a bit. I took an opportunity to snooze for a little while as M-lady spent some time with the kids, looking at photos and reading stories.

I joined a little before dinner, and we all played a little bit of Rock Band together before getting started on dinner. The last time I'd tried to play with Buster, he'd been a little scared by the characters on the screen. This time he really wanted to play the instruments.

We had a good dinner together, and a shower afterward. Buster was a little brittle all evening, probably due to general sleep debt for the weekend. Hopefully getting back to a standard routine during the week will help. He was pretty good in the shower, though. With both kids clean, I watched a little bit of Cirque du Soleil with Bud while M-lady read stories with Buster, and we reconvened for a snack before bedtime.

Both kids went to sleep pretty quickly, and have slept quietly so far. It's nice to have M-lady back.

A Complete Day

The kids slept in until just after 8:00 this morning, which was nice. We had a pretty mellow morning together while I tried to figure out what we were going to do for the day. I eventually hit on the idea of going up to Coyote Point Park, where there's a big playground which Bud had been to a long time ago and didn't remember. Bud got pretty excited about the idea.

I packed up picnic lunch while Buster was eating breakfast (Bud didn't eat much breakfast this morning), and then got everyone set and loaded. We had to go back in so that Bud could use the potty before we left, but after that false start, we were on the road. The ride up was uneventful, and we arrived by about 10:00.

The kids really enjoyed playing at the park. It was a bit of a chore on my part keeping an eye on both kids, but Bud was good about checking back in with me regularly. Buster tried to follow Bud around, but Bud showed some exceptional climbing skills, negotiating some very complex and difficult parts of the playground equipment.

Bud had a good time on the giant castle slide, and I took Buster down some of the smaller slides repeatedly at his request. Both boys ended up most enjoying a variant on the same thing, though. The playground had large areas of a rubberized, sintered surface, and several slopes of that material. Bud found a pretty big slope that he enjoyed climbing and rolling down. Buster found a gentler slope that he enjoyed walking up and running down. We probably didn't have to drive a half hour to find small hills for the kids to play on.

We had our picnic lunch in the shade, which turned out to be a little too cool. We picked up and headed for home shortly afterward, as Buster was showing signs of fatigue.

Buster fell asleep for the half-hour drive home, which was his only nap of the day. He woke when we got home and unloaded. We spent about two hours hanging out and being mellow, and I tried to get Buster to nap again, without luck.

After a snack, we all loaded up again and headed out to Fry's for a quick errand. The kids were well behaved through the trip, so we shared some french fries from McDonald's on the way home. I got started on dinner shortly after getting home, and everyone ate pretty well.

Buster managed to get himself pretty messy during dinner, so I left Bud and got Buster into the bath. We had a busy moment where Bud had a poop incident while Buster was in the bath, and I really needed to be in two places at once, but it got resolved before too long. M-lady called shortly after I'd pulled Buster out of the bath, and put Bud in.

After a quick chat with M-lady, I got Bud into PJs and we all headed downstairs for the final part of the evening. Buster was grumpy from lack of nap, so we watched a little bit of TV before having the last snack and heading for bed. Buster was out in a few minutes, and I was able to hang out with Bud for a bit, reading him a chapter of Winnie-the-Pooh before bed. Bud fell asleep about ten minutes after turning out the light.

The kids were really great today, and I enjoyed spending the day with them. There were a couple of moments that would have been easier with another set a hands available, but all in all it wasn't a hard day by any means. I'm looking forward to having M-lady back again tomorrow, though. We all miss her.

Holding Down the Fort

Bud was up a little before 8:00 this morning, and Buster woke a few minutes after 8:00. Both kids were in good spirits, so the morning was pretty easy. I headed to work after Nanny J arrived.

Bud had a play date with Friend M, whose mother arrived shortly after I headed off to work to pick Bud up. He had lunch over at M's house, and apparently had a good time, but I wasn't able to glean any other details from him.

Both kids seemed happy to see me when I got home shortly after 5:00. I brought our camera tripod home from work, and Bud immediately latched onto it as a new kind of play gun. He toted it around with him for most of the evening.

We had a nice video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B, and both the boys participated. Buster wasn't even too aggressive with the keyboard. We discovered an interesting digital version of 'peek-a-boo' using the Apple iChat Video Effects chroma-key background: If you hold still while it's figuring out the background, you'll disappear to the viewer until you move. Buster thought it was pretty cool.

After chatting, we watched a little bit of a Cirque du Soleil DVD. M-lady called while we were watching, and both boys chatted to her on speakerphone. Bud did his best to guilt trip her for being gone, even though he's been perfectly happy.

I made Mac & Cheese for dinner at Bud's request, which ended up being very popular. Buster ate a ton. After dinner we watched a little bit of the Tour and Cirque before having a some ice cream and a quick snack and getting started on the bedtime routine.

Buster was easy to put down, and was asleep shortly after 8:00. I then gave Bud his shower and got him ready for bed. Once again, he was a little hyper at bedtime, and didn't fall asleep until well after 9:00. I'm not sure why he's been wired at bedtime the past couple of days.

Just The Guys

M-lady left for the airport shortly after 5:00am today. The boys were very considerate, and didn't wake up until after I was already up and going, around 8:00. Both kids were pretty happy and cooperative during the standard morning routine. I got Bud ready for school, and got Buster started on breakfast before Nanny J arrived at about 8:45.

Bud has taken a liking to instant oatmeal, which is fantastic since it's such a quick preparation with out instant hot water. Plus it's a reasonably solid breakfast for him. Buster likes oatmeal too, but doesn't ask for it on his own yet.

I dropped Bud off at his last day of summer school, which he enjoyed. He and Buster had a good day with Nanny J. Buster was just waking up from his nap when I got home a little after 3:00 (having run an errand close to home). Bud accompanied me to the office, where he played on SesameStreet.org while I worked until about 5:00. Buster got a bath from Nanny J, and enjoyed his afternoon.

After Nanny J took her leave, I got started on trying to bake a loaf of bread with Bud. Both kids are entranced by the stand mixer, so we all had fun with that, although it was tougher to add ingredients while I was holding Buster up so he could see. After getting the dough together and in a bowl to rise, the three of us had some dinner.

Bud had some oatmeal and a couple pieces of sushi that Nanny J had prepared. Thanks Nanny J! Buster enjoyed some cucumber slices and fish. Both kids ate pretty well. M-lady called as we were wrapping up dinner, and both kids enjoyed saying hello.

We all watched a bit of the Tour de France stage, and I finished up baking the bread before bedtime. The kids enjoyed some fresh bread as a snack, although Buster supplemented his bread with some cereal. After snack, I set Bud the task of getting ready for his bath while I put Buster to sleep. Buster went right down, having only had one nap today, and I was able to attend to Bud pretty quickly.

Bud was hyper this evening. While not uncooperative, he was bouncing off the walls way too late. He was still awake when I left him to start cleaning up the kitchen a few minutes after 9:00, and he snuck downstairs to ask for a drink of water. I tucked him in again around 9:30ish, and he fell asleep a short time later. He may sleep in a bit tomorrow morning. Both kids have slept quietly so far this evening.

Tauntaun Rides

Bud woke early again this morning, but found M-lady working in the office, so let me sleep. I got up around 8:00, helped Buster get dressed, and got Buster into a clean diaper. All in all it was a pretty standard morning.

The kids seems to have had a good day, although Buster did not take a nap during the day, which left him a bit cranky in the evening. Both kids seemed happy to see me when I got home, and after Nanny J left we all wrestled and roughhoused in the living room. As Bud was rolling around on the floor, Buster wanted to get in on the action, so rolled onto his back and kicked his legs and giggled. I took turns giving the boys piggy back rides (tauntaun rides) around the room, which was a first for Buster. He really liked that.

We were having dinner when M-lady arrived home. Buster ate a lot tonight, in contrast to his rather spare meals the last few nights. Bud ate pretty well, too, without much coaxing. After dinner I turned on the TV to watch the recap of the TdF stage, and the kids played around the TV while we watched. Bud was very interested in throwing various balls around, and Buster spent a lot of time working on bristle blocks, which he seems to have figured out recently.

We broke at about 7:30 to start working on the bedtime routine. Both kids had snacks, and I got Bud showered, storied, and into bed. M-lady took some time hanging out with him after she put Buster to bed, as she'll be leaving early tomorrow morning to head out to BlogHer. And I'll be soloing for the next few days, which should be fun.

Doorknobs

Bud got me out of bed around 6:00 again today, and chatted and played around me for a couple of hours while I tried to sleep in his bed. We eventually got up a little before 8:00 and started getting ready for the day. Bud and Buster were both pretty cooperative during the morning schedule, and Bud and I managed to get to school right on time.

The kids seemed to have had a good day with Nanny J, and Bud greeted me dressed in his Indiana Jones costume, with a new addition. He'd taken a little flannel bag he has, put a handful of small Lincoln Logs in it, and had Nanny J tie it up with a twist tie. Then he'd attached it to a little velcro loop on his vest. It made a nice little treasure bag which he carried around.

Buster really enjoys playing in the water, and has discovered toilets recently. We've generally been leaving the seats up for Bud, who occasionally has to go urgently. But Buster has started playing in the toilet, and then gets to wash his hands afterward... double water play! We've started leaving the toilet lids down.

After Nanny J left, the boys and I had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Buster was pretty intent on hitting keys on the keyboard, but eventually tired of that and wandered out. He wandered back holding a longish piece of toilette paper. He proceeded to sit on my lap, tear the toilette paper into tiny pieces, and hand each piece to me.

At dinner M-lady and I decided it was time to change some of the doorknobs. We have lever-style doorknobs throughout the house, which Buster can now open. After dinner, I took Bud and we picked out some standard round knobs, which should slow Buster down a little bit.

When we got back from Home Depot, we started the bedtime routine. M-lady handled Bud for most of it, and I took care of Buster. Buster was in bed and asleep by about 8:15, and Bud by about 8:30.

After the kids were asleep, I changed out the doorknobs on some of the critical doors. We'll see how much Buster gets frustrated tomorrow.

Gathering Foreknowledge

Buster was awake from about 1:00 to 2:00 this morning, and I sat up with him until he went back to sleep. Then Bud rolled me out of bed around 6:00. I was able to snooze a bit with him until about 7:30, but it was sort of on and off. Consequently I was a little groggy this morning when it was time to actually get up.

We had a pretty straightforward morning, getting the kids dressed and fed, and getting ourselves ready to go to work. I headed out a little after 9:00, and both kids were OK with me leaving.

The kids had a good day, and spent some time playing in the back yard. They apparently both came in bearing immature lemons from our lemon tree, and I saw Buster toting his around when I got home around 5:00.

After Nanny J took her leave, we played together and read some stories before starting to watch Beauty and the Beast. Bud was a little nervous about some parts, and Buster took a strong dislike to Gaston immediately, whining and fussing whenever he appeared on the screen. Not sure what he didn't like, but his distaste was immediate.

We watched about half the movie before dinner. Bud wanted to know exactly what was going to happen in the second half of the movie, and quizzed me thoroughly while we had some dinner.

Bud ate well, but Buster didn't really eat much at dinner. M-lady arrived home as we were wrapping up, and she tried to feed Buster as well, with limited success. I guess he just wasn't very hungry this evening.

We watched and skimmed through the rest of the movie after dinner, and Bud seemed to enjoy it. It was probably too much TV in one day, though. After the show, we had a snack and then battled getting into the shower and getting ready for bed. He seemed to melt down a little, and fell asleep almost immediately after he went to bed.

Bud woke a short time later with an extremely sweaty head. We put a towel down on the bed for him, and he fell asleep again a short time later. He claimed to be afraid of the dark for the first time that I recall.

Buster went to sleep around 8:30, and has slept quietly so far.

Catching Up

I was away for the morning, but M-lady did a great job looking after the kids. They apparently had a pretty standard morning, with Buster taking a late-morning nap. The headed out to the post-wedding picnic of Friends D and A around noon.

They had a good time at the picnic, although I disappointed Bud by not arriving from my morning event early enough to join them. Buster apparently ate pretty much the whole time they were there. I arrived home a few minutes before they did, around 3:00.

Bud had gotten his clothes pretty dirty at the picnic, but I needed to wash off my wetsuit anyway, so we played outside together with the hose after I put Buster down for a nap. We headed in when Bud needed to use the potty, and I took a shower with him to get us both cleaned up.

Buster woke at about 5:00, and I watched the kids for a little while as M-lady went out to run some errands and pick up some KFC for dinner. After a couple of tries, Buster decided that he liked fried chicken an ate most of a wing. After dinner I watched the kids again for a little while as they played with Bud's pots and pans.

M-lady joined us, and I got Buster ready for bed while Bud and M-lady watched a bit of Dralion. When Buster and I rejoined, M-lady and Buster got a snack while I got Bud into PJs.

The rest of the bedtime routine was pretty quick, and the kids were in bed by 8:30. Bud didn't drop off until closer to 9:30, though. The kids slept well through the evening.

Missing The Kids

M-lady got up again with Bud this morning, and Buster joined shortly afterward. I got up and joined them around 8:00, and found both kids pretty chipper. We did a standard morning. M-lady reported that the doorbell rang when Nanny J arrived while Buster was having breakfast, and he said Nanny J's name ("Ayi") very slowly and deliberately.

Bud didn't want me to go to work this morning, and I concurred, but I eventually headed out the door after collecting some hugs. I had an evening event with a friend that I went to straight after work, and didn't get home until around 11:00, so that was the last I saw of the kids.

M-lady reported that they had a good day with Nanny J, and spent some time playing in the back yard. M-lady handled both kids in the evening, and apparently the kids were pretty well behaved. Both were sleeping soundly when I got home.

Photo Touch

Bud was up this morning around 7:30, and M-lady got up with him. I slept until 8:00 or so, when Buster woke as well. We had a pretty standard morning, and M-lady and I worked in tandem to get some breakfast for the kids.

M-lady took Bud to school with the snack for the class, and I stayed home with Buster waiting for Nanny J, who was a little late due to a doctor's appointment. I had a 9:00am call to attend, so I dialed in from my iPhone with Buster on my lap. While I was on the call, I brought up the iPhone photo album for Buster to look at. He was thrilled that he could advance the pictures by touching the screen, and had a lot of fun looking at new pics.

Nanny J arrived around 9:30ish, and Buster transferred over without any trouble. I packed up and headed for work. The kids apparently had a good day, and were playing when I arrived home around 5:00. Buster was playing with a little beach ball, tossing it around the living room, and Bud had a clear plastic bucket on his head, and was calling himself a clone trooper.

I got settled and we said goodbye to Nanny J, and the three of us played a little bit. I ended up turning on another Cirque Du Soleil show for Bud, which Buster watched occasionally. Buster and I also read some stories and washed our hands, which is one of Buster's favorite activities.

We stopped to get some dinner around 6:30, and Bud had a minor meltdown over the dinner selection. Buster and I had a pleasant meal while Bud chilled in his room for a little while. Bud came down happy about 20 minutes later, and ate pretty well.

After dinner we watched a little more Cirque before M-lady arrived home just in time for the bedtime routine. She took Buster this evening, while I fed Bud a snack, got him showered, and in PJs and in bed. Overall he was pretty cooperative, and asleep shortly after 8:30. Both kids have slept peacefully so far this evening.

Aquarium

Apologies for missing a couple of posts. I'll try to backfill, but I actually haven't been around much the past few days. I had a demo at work on Tuesday, and ended up working all night Monday night to be ready for it. The demo went well, though, and the team took today off after the tough early-week effort.

Given that I had the day off, and no plans, I suggested that Bud and I might head off to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Bud liked the idea, so after handling a fairly standard morning (although M-lady let me sleep in until 8:00... thank you!), Bud and I packed up and got in the car for the longish drive.

It was about a ninety minute drive, and Bud was fantastic. He likes to listen to the Raiders of the Lost Ark soundtrack, and ask me about what's happening in the movie every thirty seconds or so. Fortunately, the music is differentiated enough that I can usual give a respectable answer.

We go to the aquarium a little after 11:00, and had to wait in line to buy tickets and get in. Bud indicated that he was hungry, but we took time to check out the otters before getting some lunch at the cafe. After lunch, I pretty much offered some suggestions and guidance, but mostly followed Bud around, seeing what he wanted to see. Bud liked lots of things, but I think the sea horse exhibit was a highlight.

We headed back to the car a little after 2:00, and headed for home. Bud fell asleep on the drive, which was uneventful until we were about five miles from home. At that point the right rear tire went flat and promptly disintegrated on the freeway. I pulled over to the shoulder to check out the damage, and got started on changing the tire when Bud woke up and asked what was going on.

Fortunately, a tow truck pulled up behind me just a few seconds later, and a member of the Freeway Service Patrol helped me with the tire change.

The rest of the trip home was uneventful, and I got started on finding a new set of tires for the car before taking a short nap. Bud entertained himself with Lego, and then playing with Sesamestreet.com for a bit before M-lady arrived home.

I helped Bud with a bath shortly after 6:00, as he apparently spilled orange juice rather dramatically at dinner while I was napping. Buster wanted to help with the tub, but M-lady managed to distract him with the sink while I got Bud washed up. Buster sure does love to play in the water!

Bud and I got a snack after his bath, and then M-lady got Bud ready for bed while I read a couple of stories with Buster and put him down. Buster took a while to go to sleep, but was out a little after 8:30. Bud also took a while to fall asleep, possibly due to his nap in the afternoon. M-lady and I took turns lying with him as he drifted off.

Episode IV

M-lady let me sleep in this morning, which was nice. It was my first 6 hour chunk of sleep in more than a week. I got up at 10:00, and found both kids dressed and fed and fairly happy.

They apparently had a good morning together. Bud was extremely vocal on a phone call to Agu, and Buster even managed to get a couple words in. The kids haven't really figured out the talking on the phone thing before, so that was kind of neat.

I put Buster down for a nap shortly after 10:00, and he slept for about an hour. Bud and I played together for a little while in the office together. When Buster got up, I hung out in the hexagon with him while Bud continued to play with Lego. He's getting really good at building spaceships.

M-lady had stepped out to run an errand, and returned while Buster and I were having some lunch. Bud came down and joined us a short time later. Both kids ate well for lunch.

M-lady left for a party a short time later, and I played with the kids for a bit before Buster started acting hungry again. He had a good-sized snack of yogurt and banana, while Bud joined us and had some grapes. After Buster was finished up, I managed to put him down for an afternoon nap at about 3:00.

We'd been cooped up inside all day, and I planned to take the kids out after Buster's nap. But Buster ended up sleeping for more than two hours, so it was time to get some dinner when he woke. While he was sleeping, Bud and I watched Star Wars (the original) together, only scanning through the Tusken Raider attack and the trash compactor scene. Bud really enjoyed the movie.

M-lady arrived home shortly after 5:00, and Buster woke a little later. We ordered sushi for dinner, and Bud went with me to get it. It was our brief out-of-the-house time.

We had a nice dinner on return, and Buster ate a fair bit of sushi himself. He also managed to get su rice everywhere. After dinner, there was an effort to get Bud into the shower, which resulted in a major meltdown.

Bud headed to bed after his shower, and was asleep pretty quickly. Buster has slept quietly so far tonight, and slept pretty well last night: I think his teeth are bothering him less.

More Words

Bud was up around 7:15, and M-lady got up with him. I got out of bed around 7:45, and got myself ready to go out to Friend D's bachelor party. Buster was just starting to make some noise as I said goodbye to Bud and M-lady and left for most of the day.

The kid's and M-lady had a good day together. Buster managed to not nap much all day, but wasn't too cranky in the evening. They spent some time at Stanford during the afternoon, and the kids had a great time running around the Oval, the Quad, visiting the clock tower, checking out MemChu, and getting Jamba Juice.

Buster made a speaking breakthrough today, apparently, and called M-lady and Bud by their names ("Ma-ma" and "Ge-ge"). He also indicated a banana with an emphatic, "Na!" With the sudden burst of speaking, it seems he's made a bit of a mental leap on the communications front.

I arrived home around 5:30, and watched a little bit of TV with the kids before we got started on dinner. Both kids ate well, and after dinner I took a shower with the two of them. We had a good time, and both kids were well behaving in and out of the shower. After wrangling Bud into PJs, we headed downstairs for a snack.

Bud and I read the first of his new books today for a bedtime story. It's really a visual dictionary, so we flipped pages more than actually reading. Bud was asleep a little before 9:00.

Buster fell asleep at a reasonable hour as well, although he was a little restless at first. But both kids have slept quietly for the majority of the evening.

Watching Biking

The kids were up around 7:15, and M-lady got up with them initially. I joined right around 8:00, and chased Buster around upstairs a little bit while Bud got himself dressed. It was a pretty standard morning, all in all. Bud requested oatmeal for breakfast, which he does from time to time, and asked where oatmeal comes from.

The kids seem to have had a good day with Nanny J, with Buster's morning nap skipped in favor of a trip to the park. They had a good time, and Buster got a solid afternoon nap. I arrived home a little bit after 5:00, and we horsed around a little bit after saying goodbye to Nanny J for the weekend.

M-lady arrived home a few minutes later. I sat down in front of the TV with the kids, where Bud asked to watch Cirque rather than the Tour de France stage recap I was interested in watching. We watched a little bit of Cirque before dinner.

Both kids ate pretty well, and were willing to watch the end of the TdF stage with me after dinner. Bud keeps asking me if I'm as fast as the riders on TV, and when I tell him I'm not, he says I need to practice more.

The kids ended up running around the playroom a bit as we watched, but were generally content until the stage was wrapped up and we started the bedtime routine. I took a shower with Bud, and then we got him into PJs and into bed. He was asleep a little before 9:00. Buster woke once during the evening, and was soothed by M-lady.

Early Evening

The kids were up a little early this morning, on the early side of 7:00, and M-lady got up with them. I joined them around 7:45, and helped get Bud ready for school. He was excited to play a little with Aunt RM this morning, and got up early enough that the distraction wasn't much of an issue with school prep. He was ready to go by the time Nanny J arrived.

We said goodbye to Aunt RM, who took off a short time later. The kids had a good day with Nanny J, and were in good spirits when I got home around 5:00. We put on a Cirque Du Soleil DVD and watched that for about half an hour before M-lady arrived home.

We had an early dinner, and then a little more TV before showers and bedtime routine. We headed to bed a little early, since M-lady and I were taking off to run a dance rehearsal at 9:00, and we had Babysitter M come over at about 8:15.

Bud peeked a look when he arrived, and then headed for bed and sleep. Buster took a while to drop off, but fell asleep just as M-lady and I needed to go. Both kids have slept soundly so far tonight... no peep for the babysitter. Hopefully they sleep well the rest of the night, too.

Playing With Aunt RuggerMom

Buster was again up and down during the night, and Bud woke once right as I was going to bed, around 4:30am (work has been keeping me up late this week). M-lady and I got Bud settled again, and we all got started on the morning around 7:30 or so.

We headed downstairs around 8:00, and found Aunt RuggerMom having some breakfast. Buster was still a little wary of Aunt RM, and wouldn't eat when she was around until dinnertime. But Bud was happy to see her and find she would be hanging out with him all day.

They had a great time playing together, including spending a couple of hours outside after lunch. They ran up and down the street, played baseball, ate oranges, and Bud climbed in the trees on the side of our yard. Bud apparently got a little scratched up in the trees, but had lots of fun.

While they were playing baseball, Aunt RM was standing a little too close when she pitched the ball to him, not realizing he's pretty good at hitting the ball. He swatted the ball right back into her, which apparently left a bit of a mark on her torso where it impacted. Aunt RM stood well back for the remainder of the baseball play.

I managed to get home around 4:00, while they were playing a little bit of Lego Star Wars together while waiting for Cousin LR to become available. I set up my laptop to join the video call, and Cousin LR got to see his mom and play videogames with Bud for a little bit before it was LR's bedtime and we started packing up to go out to dinner.

After Nanny J took her leave, Aunt RM and I loaded up the kids into the car and went to the mall, where we met M-lady and got some dinner. We had corndogs, french fries, and cherry lemonade, as we used to eat with Bud a long time ago. Buster enjoyed the fries, and then ate nearly half of M-lady's corndog. So that was a hit.

We wandered around the mall for a bit until the kids started showing signs of wear, and then headed for home. I got Bud into the bathtub when we arrived, where he was fine until it was time to soap up. Then he had a major meltdown, which carried him right into bed by about 8:15. He did manage a thank you to Aunt RM for playing with him today, though.

He'd calmed down by the time the lights went out, and I sat with him for a little while before heading downstairs again. He got himself out of bed shortly, and I put him back and sat with him for a few more minutes before I changed places with M-lady, and went and sat with Buster until he fell asleep. M-lady fell asleep with Bud, and woke a bit later.

Buster has woken a couple of times, but hopefully will be a little less restless than last night.

Evening Visitors

M-lady and I worked very late, and M-lady made the mistake of turning the fan off in Buster's room at about 5:30am, which woke the guy. He played with her for about an hour before falling back to sleep.

Bud got me up around 7:45, and we joined the rest of the family in the morning routine. Bud was pretty amenable about getting ready for school, and was anticipating his sharing day, which isn't until Thursday. Bud was ready to go in time to get some sunscreen on him and out the door when Nanny J arrived.

The kids apparently had a pretty good day. Buster is still coughing a bit. Bud apparently got so worked up in the afternoon that his hair was damp with sweat. When Nanny J commented on this, Bud went to his bathroom and rinsed his hair in the sink (as he's seen me do to combat bedhead occasionally) all by himself. He then carefully patted his hair back in place, even though it was sopping wet. He was very proud of himself.

M-lady arrived home first and got the kids, and I arrived just as Nanny J was leaving. Bud was dressed in his full Jedi regalia. I just had time to put down the pizzas I'd brought home when Aunt RuggerMom, my sister, arrived with her friend J and J's two daughters, Big S (five years old) and Little S (two years old).

Buster was a little wary of the visitors at first, but Bud started playing with the girls right away, which was great. We all had dinner together before too long. All the kids save Buster sat at their own table, and ate reasonably well. Buster pretty much ate an entire slice of pizza on his own, along with a jar of carrots and some biscuits.

After dinner all the kids played for a while before J and her daughters headed for home. I was proud of the way Bud hosted them and shared his toys. Buster was fine as long and M-lady or I was in sight.

Aunt RuggerMom will be staying with us for a few days, which is great. She brought some bath toys as a present for Bud, and a book for Buster. Bud was excited about the bath toys, and consequently took a longish bath before we had a snack and headed for bed. The lights went out a little bit late, but he fell asleep pretty quickly.

Buster has woken once so far, but again puts himself back to sleep if there's someone sitting in his room with him. With the cough and the molars, I'm not surprised he's waking occasionally at night.

Repairman

Buster didn't sleep very well last night, and M-lady was up with him a bit. She ended up sleeping in his room for a while. Bud came and woke me around 7:15, and Buster was up closer to 8:00. We had a pretty standard morning.

Around 9:30, the repairman for the garage arrived. Our garage door popped a spring over the weekend, and it was tough to get the car out. I was on work calls while the repairman worked, but Bud and Buster and I sat together in the doorway to the garage and watched him take apart the lifting mechanism and reassemble it with the new parts. Buster enjoyed it until he got scared of the sound of the electric screwdriver the repairman used, and ran off to find Nanny J.

After the garage door was repaired, I finished up my meeting call and then headed off for work. While I was on the call, Bud and Buster had loaded up and headed out to go to the park with Nanny J. They came back quickly, as Bud had tripped on the walk there and skinned his knee. After getting a band-aid, they proceeded again. I left for work shortly after they left the house a second time, and waved at Bud as I drove by.

They had fun at the park, although Bud was a little nervous with a larger crowd of kids around, so they came home a little early. Buster managed to miss his morning nap and had a short afternoon nap, and was consequently pretty grumpy towards the end of the evening.

I got home at about 5:00, and Buster had a bit of a coughing fit as Nanny J was leaving. Bud was running around, and Buster was inclined to follow, so I slowed things down and we watched some more Cirque Du Soleil on TV for a bit.

Then we headed upstairs and had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Both kids interacted a bit, which was good. M-lady arrived home a short time after we wrapped up, and I got started on dinner as the kids were melting down.

We got both kids fed, and I hung out with Buster while M-lady got Bud bathed. After Bud was in PJs, I read him a story and put him to bed, while M-lady put Buster to sleep. Both kids have slept peacefully so far. I hope Buster's cough doesn't bother him too much tonight.

Go Fish

Buster was up this morning before 8:00, I believe, and M-lady got up with him. Bud came and got me at about 8:45, and I relieve M-lady as well. The three of us hung out in the office for a while, reading stories and playing with Lego.

M-lady rejoined us at about 10:30, and took Bud downstairs to have some breakfast while I tried to get Buster to take a nap. It didn't happen until about 11:30, though.

Buster and I had some lunch when we got up near 1:00. After lunch, there was some playing and general hanging out. Bud had apparently been playing some Memory with M-lady, with mixed results. I thought Bud might be ready to be introduced to some simple card games.

Bud and I sat down with a deck of cards, and I showed him the suits, face cards, aces, etc. He wasn't super clear on what it was all for, but followed along reasonably well. Then we walked through a couple of games of Go Fish. Bud did pretty well, although he had a tendency to announce the card he picked up every time he fished. I took a break in the middle of our second game to change Buster's diaper, and M-lady finished up the game with Bud.

After playing Go Fish, I showed him a simple War variant, which he also enjoyed. After packing up the cards, I managed to get Buster down for an afternoon nap while Bud got himself a quick snack.

Cousin LR wasn't available for gaming this evening, so Bud and I played a little of Lego Indiana Jones on our own. We had a good time, and wrapped up to get started on dinner. Since we were pretty much out of food in the house, Bud and I made a quick trip out to pick up some food. Everyone ate well.

After dinner I got both boys into the shower. I had originally intended to bathe them sequentially, but Buster would not be restrained. We had a great time playing in the shower: it's nice that neither child minds getting water in his face right now.

After the shower, M-lady ran out to the grocery store, and I read some stories to the kids for a few minutes before we plopped down in front of the TV and fired up Animusic. Both kids really enjoyed the first couple of scenes. We were just sitting down to have our evening snack when M-lady returned.

I got Bud into bed a little later than I had intended, but we had a pleasant story time and lights were out around 8:45. He's slept quietly. Buster has been a little restless, but has gone back to sleep quickly with a parent present each time he's woken up.

Happy Fireworks Day

Bud got me out of bed this morning a little before 8:00, and we played together a bit as M-lady got up with Buster. After hanging out in the office for a little while, we all headed downstairs to get some breakfast and watch the first stage of the Tour de France.

Bud and M-lady headed out a little before 10:00 for a playdate with Friend K at the Jungle. They apparently had a great time, although Bud got stuck in a new section as he was exploring, and got a little panicked. M-lady was able to rescue him, though, and he and Friend K were having fun again before they called it a morning. After the Jungle M-lady took Bud to the mall to get some lunch. They had a good time, and ended up getting home shortly after 1:00.

Meanwhile, Buster and I watched the end of the TdF stage, and then headed upstairs for a morning nap. Buster went down without too much trouble, and ended up sleeping for almost two hours.

While I was changing Buster's diaper, I noticed that he's got some more teeth coming in. He's been stalled at 8 for a while, so I wasn't too surprised. I saw 3 new molars coming in, which was interesting... no sign of the transition teeth between the incisors and the molars. So he'll have teeth 1-8, and 13-15. He's got both top teeth coming in, and one on the bottom. I suspect this is what's been making him a little more restless at night.

He woke around 12:30, and we proceeded to get some lunch together. He ate pretty well, and we were reading stories together upstairs when M-lady and Bud arrived home. After getting settled, we all spent a little bit of time hanging out together before I set up a video call with Grandma W and Granddad B. We had a nice chat, and Buster interacted quite a bit. He really likes pounding on the keyboard, though, and now understands when I try to put a book on the laptop to cover the keyboard. Bud also made a couple of run-by appearances.

At about 3:00, Bud and I started getting ready for a bike ride. It took some prep, but we loaded up and headed out at the same time M-lady took Buster out for a walk at Santana Row. I installed the carseat for Buster facing forward, which Buster really, really liked. He kept giggling in the car.

Bud and I had a good ride, but he's getting too heavy to haul, too big for the trailer, and he started asking if we were home yet on the ride for the first time (I might have been going a little slow). Time to get him on a clamp-on tandem, so he can pedal, too.

M-lady and Buster arrived at home at almost exactly the same time Bud and I did, and we all headed inside together. I got cleaned up while everyone had a snack, and then got started on dinner. Everyone ate well, and after dinner the kids and I watched a little bit of Cirque Du Soliel at Bud's request.

As evening wore on, I tried to get Buster to sleep a bit while M-lady tried to get Bud to snooze. Neither of us were successful. At about 9:00pm, well after the kids' bedtimes, we loaded up in the car and headed out to find a fireworks display.

The local park display was really, really crowded, and we ended up parking about two miles away. We walked to an intersection and watched the fireworks from there with a bunch of other folks. Bud was entranced, and Buster thought it was pretty cool, although he was more interested in the people around us at times.

We headed back home, arriving near 10:00pm. Bud fell asleep on the drive home, but Buster just giggled occasionally. When we got home, I got Bud showered and into bed, and M-lady put Buster to sleep. Bud had his lights out around 10:30, and fell asleep quickly. Both kids have slept quietly so far, and I expect them to sleep in a little bit in the morning.

It was fun to take the kids out to see the fireworks. Next year we might try the Shoreline fireworks-with-symphony thing, since both kids really like music.

Cake Day

Bud got me out of bed this morning briefly at about 3:00, but I managed to get back to my own bed around 3:30. He then got me up at about 7:30, and we played together until M-lady joined us with Buster shortly after 8:00. I took the opportunity to get back in bed for a few minutes while they got some breakfast.

M-lady had put a cake in the oven when I joined her downstairs, and I helped wrangle the kids a bit while she got dressed. Bud managed to get himself dressed on his own, although he forgot underwear on the first try. We all got ready, waiting for Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C to come over for a visit.

We put on the opening number of SYTYCD, and both kids enjoyed watching it. The TV was set to Cartoon Network, however, and Bud saw The Clone Wars on TV, so we watched the remainder of the episode together.

Cousin C and family arrived a short time later, and Buster conceded to taking a nap a few minutes later. I got some lunch together as Bud and Cousin C played a bit, together at times, and the adults chatted.

We all had lunch, and Buster woke up after M-lady and I had had a chance to eat. After lunch it was cake time, which everyone enjoyed. A little bit later our visitors struck out for home, and I spent some time hanging out with Bud and Buster while M-lady took a quick nap.

When I finally determined that our home networking issues were due to a bad router, I left a not-yet-napping-but-sleepy Buster with M-lady and took Bud to Fry's. He was really good there, although he wanted to sit on my shoulders on the way in, and he's getting sort of big for that.

Buster wasn't yet napping when we arrived home, so I rocked him a bit and managed to get him to sleep for a little while. He woke in time for us to plan out some dinner.

The kids seemed a little fried in the evening. I think Buster's nap schedule was a little off, and I'm not sure what was setting Bud off, but he was occasionally intractable. M-lady helped him through the end of the evening as I fed and played with Buster before bedtime.

Bud was in bed around 8:30, and fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster is finding it more difficult to fall asleep, so ends up being a bit restless before finally giving in. Both kids have slept well since about 9:30, though.

Naming Names

Buster was a bit restless during the night, but it was Bud who got us up around 7:30, having wet his bed a bit. M-lady and I got him cleaned up and his bed stripped, and he managed to mostly get himself dressed.

M-lady had to leave for work a little early, and the kids were downstairs having breakfast with me when she left. Bud, since he was up and dressed a little early, had no problem getting out the door in time to get to school. Buster was a little disappointed not to be coming with us, though.

The kids seem to have had a good day, and Bud came home from school armed with patriotic paraphernalia and facts to celebrate the Fourth. He was waving a little flag around when I got home, singing about George Washington on the quarter.

I arrived home a bit late, probably around 7:30 or so. M-lady had already fed the kids dinner, and saved a plate for me. Buster required a bit of food from my plate before I was allowed to eat, though.

We played a bit in the living room before getting started on the bedtime routine. Due to my late arrival home, the bedtime routine was a bit delayed, and the kids were pretty tired by the time they got into bed. Both have slept soundly so far, though.

Buster apparently started saying "Ge-ge-ge-ge..." to indicate Bud, which means he got his brother's name before "Ma-ma" and "Ba-ba". I'll assume those won't be too far behind, though.

More Signs

Buster was up this morning a bit before 8:00, and Bud was up shortly as well. Bud and Buster read books in Buster's room for a while as M-lady was going through general morning preparations, and I got up around 8:00 to join the family.

M-lady and I took off for work around 9:00, while both kids were having some breakfast. They headed for the park with Nanny J a bit later in the morning, where Bud met Friend M, and they had a great time. Buster missed his morning nap, though.

I got home around 5:00, and Bud met me in the garage as I rolled my bike in. The kids were happy to see me, although Buster was anxious to escape. He really wants to head outside as a general rule. Fortunately, the temperature came down a bit today, so he got more outside time.

Nanny J took her leave, and the kids and I roughhoused around the living room for a little while before settling down and watching some more Cirque Du Soleil. While Bud watched, Buster wanted me to read a book of baby signs to him. He's been picking up new signs quickly, and now does 'bib' regularly.

Both kids were really enjoying Cirque, and we were wrapping up when M-lady arrived home. We had a good dinner, and both kids ate pretty well. After dinner, M-lady took the kids outside briefly. They ran around a bit, and came back inside happy. Buster had fallen down a couple of times, so I got his hands washed for him. He was coughing quite a bit, and eventually vomited a little bit. After we got him cleaned up, M-lady gave Bud his shower while I got some warm milk and cereal for Buster.

M-lady put Buster to bed while I read Bud his story. We did managed to get the kids to bed a little bit early, although Bud and I didn't get the lights out until about 8:45. Bud was asleep pretty quickly. Bud has slept quietly so far, but Buster has been a little restless tonight. He'll put himself back to sleep as long as someone sits in his room with him, though.
