Waiting By The Window

Bud came and got me out of bed around 4:00 this morning, and I slept with him in his bed until about 7:30. When I headed back to our bed, I discovered Buster there sleeping with M-lady. I was able to nab another half hour before getting up and getting Bud started on waking up.

After getting the kids dressed and fed, we packed up and took them to the doctor for their checkups (Buster his 12 month, and Bud his 4 year). Both kids were well behaved.

Bud got to do the vision and hearing tests today, and passed both with flying colors. Buster seems to be about an inch longer than Bud was at the same age, but also about a pound lighter. But both kids were deemed healthy.

They each got a couple of shots. Bud said "Ouch!", but other than that, was great. Buster cried a little, but recovered almost immediately after the shots were done. We packed up and arrived home a little after 11:00.

Bud camped out by the window at the front of the living room to watch for the arrival of Granddad B. M-lady managed to get him to have some lunch with Buster and herself, but when I came downstairs after lunch he was still hanging out there. He was pretty excited when Granddad B arrived a little bit after noon.

M-lady headed off to work, and Granddad B and I had lunch. Bud ate a little with us, and Buster sat in his chair, keeping a close eye on the new visitor. After lunch, we headed upstairs for a short time before I put Buster down for his nap. He fell asleep pretty quickly.

Bud and Granddad B played with Lego for most of the afternoon, and Buster slept for most of it. Buster woke briefly after napping for an hour, but looked sleepy, and slept for another two hours without problem. I finally got him up around 4:30.

After having a banana for a snack, Buster allowed Granddad B to read to him, although he still looked at him a bit suspiciously. I hung out with Buster for a bit while Bud played yet more legos with Granddad B before M-lady arrived home a little before 6:00.

I had some work friends over in the evening for dinner, and while Bud at first wanted to look on from a different room, Buster was just fine eating dinner in the same room with everyone. He definitely wanted M-lady or me to be closest to him, but he didn't mind having all the other folks around.

Bud enjoyed having some pizza and a cookie with M-lady, and then watched us as we played Rock Band for a little while. I put him to bed a little after 8:00, and he was very amenable to the process. He fell asleep on his own a bit before 9:00.

M-lady put Buster to bed around 8:30, without too much difficulty. Both kids have slept soundly so far, which is remarkable given how loud the Rock Band party was downstairs. Hopefully they'll both sleep well through the night tonight.

Thanks Again

M-lady brought Buster into our bed this morning at about 4:30, and he slept solidly there until a little after 7:00. At that point he woke up and was really, really happy. He was very cute, smiling and giggling. I eventually got up and changed his diaper, and deposited him in his crib, where he played happily for a bit as I got dressed.

Bud was a little harder to motivate this morning, but we eventually got him dressed, fed, and out the door with me to school. The drop-off went fine, and Bud apparently had a pretty good day as school. Buster ate a lot in the afternoon again.

I got home a little late, and a bit after M-lady. Bud seemed happy to see me, and I took Buster for a little bit as well as M-lady attended to some business. After she took Buster back, I got dinner ready, and we all ate. Buster was a little cranky at dinner time, though.

After dinner we all played together for a little while in the playroom. Since Grandma Nese will be leaving tomorrow morning, I took the opportunity to get the car seats out of her car, and while I was in the garage, I picked up a few more Star Wars Lego sets for Bud. He knew what they were as soon as I came in, and headed upstairs to start working on one.

M-lady and I gave Buster a bath, which he enjoyed quite a bit. He really likes splashing, and doesn't mind water in his face right now, so washing his hair is pretty easy. After bathing Buster, I took Bud downstairs for a snack.

We said goodnight and goodbye and thanks to Grandma Nese, who will leave early tomorrow morning, and did the bedtime routine. Bud was pretty tired, and got a bit out of sorts before we actually crawled into bed. After reading a little bit, M-lady lay down with him for a bit as he fell asleep. Both kids have slept well so far this evening.

Grandma Nese will be leaving tomorrow morning, and we can't thank her enough for taking care of the kids for the past week-plus. She's been fantastic, and we've all enjoyed having her around.

Got Your Ear

Buster was up a couple times during the night, but was quickly consoled. He woke for the morning around 7:00, and M-lady got up with him. Bud came and got me about 7:20.

I played lego with Bud for a little while before getting him dressed and getting ready for the day myself. Buster was a bit put out when M-lady and I left him with Grandma Nese, but he calmed down pretty quickly. To avoid upsetting him, M-lady and I kind of snuck out after getting packed up and headed off to work.

The kids had another great day with Grandma Nese. She's been fantastic with them. They went to the park after lunch, and had a good time playing there. Buster had a solid nap in the afternoon, but wasn't interested in a bath when he woke up, possibly because he was still groggy. I arrived home around 5:00, to find the kids having a snack.

We played together for a while, and had a good time. Both the kids enjoyed tickle-tackles, and Bud made a good effort to tackle me back. We eventually calmed down a little and I went to play on the computer a bit with Buster and Bud watching.

Bud was interested in what I was doing, but Buster soon lost interest, and started grabbing my ear and then laughing. We played "Got Your Ear" for a while, and Bud joined in as well.

M-lady arrived home, and Buster was really happy to see her. We had some dinner (thanks Grandma Nese!) and then set up a video chat with Grandma W to get Buster a little bit of exposure. The video call went well, although I still spend a lot of time defending the laptop from little hands wanting to press buttons.

After the video call, M-lady started getting Buster ready for bed while I gave Bud a shower and got him into PJs. Bud was being a bit difficult, so M-lady and I did the rare switcheroo... I put Buster to bed while she got Bud and snack and put him to bed. Buster fell asleep around 9:15, and has woken very briefly once this evening. Bud was in bed a bit after 8:30, and asleep shortly after.

A Bit Screechy

The kids slept reasonably well, with Buster waking once around 1:30, but going back to sleep pretty quickly after M-lady soothed him. Bud rolled me out of bed around 6:00, but I managed to convince him to get back into his bed, where we stayed until nearly 7:30.

Bud spent some time playing with Lego after that, while I snoozed a little bit more and then got dressed and ready. It took a little convincing to get Bud to get dressed and head downstairs for breakfast, but he eventually rolled that way and we got him out the door for school on time.

Buster woke around 7:30, but was very screechy for most of the morning. He ate a lot today, and was even screechy in the evening. We think he might be growing, given the amount of food he's eating, and could be suffering some growing pains or discomfort.

The kids had a good day with Grandma Nese again. Buster didn't take a long nap in the morning, but did doze off briefly. The kids both had a good lunch, and a fun afternoon.

I got home around 5:00ish, and the kids seemed happy to see me home, although Buster started in on screeching pretty quickly. We all played together for a bit before getting started on dinner when M-lady got home.

After dinner, I took Buster and Bud and sat in front of the TV for a little while to try and settled Buster down. It worked pretty well, and he chilled with us for about 20 minutes before finding his way to M-lady. Bud and I watched a little bit more TV until bedtime.

Bud was pretty good about the bedtime routine, although it seemed to run a little late. He was in bed with the lights out a bit after 8:30, after Buster had already gone to sleep. Bud fell asleep before 9:00, though. So far the kids have slept well.

Balloons

The kids did their usual wake up thing this morning, and we all headed downstairs around 8:00ish to get some breakfast. M-lady suggested french toast for breakfast, so I put that together for everyone. Everyone enjoyed it thoroughly, including Buster, who ate a fair amount of a piece himself.

After breakfast, I put Buster down for a morning nap, and headed back to bed myself for a little while. Bud played with Grandma Nese and M-lady, and they made an effort to clean up the toys in the playroom.

Buster was still napping when I rejoined, and I headed out to run some errands right around the time he was waking up, after a 90 minute nap.

Everyone had lunch while I was gone, but the kids ate more when I returned and had my lunch. After lunch, both M-lady and Grandma Nese departed to run some errands and get out of the house a little bit, and I watched the kids for the afternoon. Bud played on SesameStreet.org for a little while, and Buster and I read stories until I figured he was sleepy enough that I could put him down for his afternoon nap.

While Buster was napping, I played with Lego with Bud, and he showed his improving grasp of Lego construction fundamentals. He was able to follow the instructions for the Lego set he got for his birthday, constructing the entire thing by himself with only a couple of corrections.

After Buster woke, we headed downstairs and got started on setting up game night. We played a little bit with Granddad B and Cousin LR, and then just with LR when Granddad B quit for the evening. Grandma Nese and M-lady both arrived home while we were playing, and M-lady fed Buster a quick meal before we wrapped up the game and all headed out to Red Robin for dinner.

Both the kids ate really well. Bud demolished his meal, and Buster ate a banana, followed by a few french fries. Buster was pretty entertained during the meal by a balloon, provided by the restaurant, which we tied to his highchair.

Bud played outside for a little while after we got home, while Buster ran around inside holding on to his balloon. When I finally managed to get Bud inside it was time to take a shower. Both kids showered with me, and I managed to get them clean, although over all it was a more difficult task than it should have been with Bud's reluctance to get in the shower and Buster reluctance to get out.

Bud and I watched a little bit of TV, had a snack, and headed for bed after M-lady got him into his PJs. Buster had his bedtime bottle at the same time Bud was having his snack. Bud went to sleep as usual, a little before 9:00.

Playdates

Buster was up this morning from about 2:00 to 3:00, but slept pretty well after that. Bud got me out of bed a bit before 7:00, and wanted to play with lego. I agreed to look at the ships he'd built, but told him I was going back to bed after that. He played by himself for a little while, and then went back to his room and read books for a bit.

Buster woke around 7:30, and Bud hung out with Buster and M-lady for a bit. They all headed downstairs around 8:00 for breakfast. They ate well, and I joined them a bit before 9:00 to find a very groggy Buster. I managed to get him to take an early nap as the rest of the family got ready.

A little before 10:00 and with a newly refreshed Buster, I helped M-lady and Grandma Nese load the kids into the car so they could all go over to The Jungle for a playdate with Friend K. Bud was excited, and apparently had a great time running around. Buster also got his first taste of The Jungle, running around the toddler area. He apparently really liked the ball pit after a bit of trepidation.

The arrived home shortly after noon, and I got back from grocery shopping a few minutes later. We all had some lunch, and Buster was getting pretty sleepy. I put him down for a nap and had some quiet(ish) time with Bud. We read stories, played a little bit of Lego Star Wars, and got started on cooking dinner.

Buster actually ended up taking a two-and-a-half hour nap, and was just waking up as I dashed out to run a quick errand. When I got back, Buster had eaten a banana, but was still looking a little groggy.

Uncle C, Aunt O, and Cousin C arrived a little after 4:00, and I worked on dinner while the kids played and the adults chatted. Cousin C took a few minutes to get comfortable with his surroundings, but was soon wandering off, checking things out around the house.

We had a good dinner, and the kids played with Uncle C and me for a bit afterward. We tried to keep the roughhousing to a minimum to avoid barfing in the living room. That said, Cousin C really enjoys being turned upside-down.

Buster seemed pretty comfortable with the guests, although he occasionally got a little upset when he realized that he didn't know where M-lady and I were. Cousin C was more comfortable here than I've seen him before, and was smiling and giggling quite a bit of the time.

After the visitors packed up and said their goodbyes, I played with Bud for a few minutes before we had an ice cream cone, took a shower, and headed for bed. Bud was still pretty wired before the shower, but was mellow by bedtime, and fell asleep pretty quickly. He still states that he doesn't want to go to sleep each time we turn the lights out, though.

Buster fell asleep around the same time, and was a little restless around 10:00, but was willing to go back to sleep as soon as M-lady or I heads into the room. I think he just wakes up a little lonely.

A Communication Leap

Buster woke this morning a little before 6:00, and I brought him to bed with us. He thrashed a bit, and I eventually picked him up and sat in the office playpen with him for a while. We both dozed a little bit, but Buster generally was up and playing.

I heard Bud get up a bit after 7:00, and around 7:30 Buster and I joined Bud and M-lady in our bedroom. I managed to snag a few minutes of snoozing before I got up and got myself dressed, followed by getting Bud dressed. We headed downstairs for breakfast, and Bud followed shortly.

I trimmed Buster's fingernails, which had grown to dangerous lengths, while M-lady fed him a morning bottle. It's the only time he's still enough that I can trim his nails now. We're transferring him to cow's milk, and he hasn't seemed to mind at all. M-lady and Grandma Nese got the Bud ready for school and fed Buster some breakfast.

Bud was pretty excited to go to school, and by all accounts had a good day. One of his teachers reported that some of the other kids really wanted to play with Bud today, and were really trying to get his attention. Bud was quite the center of activity, and the whole group of kids had to be told to settle down.

Grandma Nese picked up Bud from school, and they all had a good afternoon. Buster took a solid morning and afternoon nap, so he was pretty chipper when I got home from work around 5:30. M-lady arrived a short time later, when the kids and I were playing in the living room. I was picking the kids up and spinning them around. Bud's getting a little heavy for it, but Buster absolutely loves it. Then he promptly falls over due to dizziness.

Bud was pretty hig-energy all evening. I tried to slow him down a little bit before dinner, without much success. Both kids ate well, though. After dinner Bud and I played a little bit of Lego Star Wars before doing the usual bedtime routine.

Buster has made a dramatic jump in communication, and therefore perceived personality. He's started pointing at things. He'll indicate things he wants, but often it seems he's just trying out pointing. It's fun to suddenly feel like you're getting a lot more information about what he's thinking.

Buster also showed a new trick he learned with Grandma Nese today. While reading an animal book, Grandma Nese opened her mouth wide to illustrate the hippo, and Buster imitated her. He repeated the performance for M-lady and I later in the evening.

Buster has also started waving and saying "Night-Night" at bedtime. Although he sort of loses the 'T' sound, the meaning is unmistakable.

Both kids were asleep around 8:30, and have slept solidly so far this evening.

Comfortable

The kids slept pretty well through the night, although Buster was up and ready to play at about 6:30. M-lady took Buster to the office playpen and lay next to him as he entertained himself. I biked into work this morning, so said my goodbyes to Buster and M-lady and hit the road before Bud was up.

The kids seem to have had a good day with Grandma Nese. They headed for the park in the morning, and Buster got to go on the swings while Bud played on other equipment. Buster slept in the stroller on the walk back home while Bud pedaled slowly on his trike. They ate a good lunch, and Buster took an afternoon nap as well, letting Bud and Grandma Nese play with Lego for a while in the afternoon.

I got home shortly after 5:00, and found Buster eating a snack. He didn't fuss at all when he saw me... it seems he's gotten comfortable with Grandma Nese. Yay!

I had to jump on a phone call as soon as I got home, and Bud really wanted to play with me, but was good enough to stay pretty quiet. M-lady arrived at home, and soon Buster was toddling around with us happily as well, giving Grandma Nese a break. Shortly after 6:00 we all headed down to get some dinner. Bud liked the ravioli we had, but Buster didn't like it very much. Buster did like the casserole leftovers, though, and ate a pretty solid dinner. Bud managed to drop a couple of ravioli in his lap, rendering his shirt and shorts spectacularly sauce spattered.

After dinner and a chocolate Easter candy, Bud and I headed upstairs for a shower. He was pretty good in the shower, although it took a little while to convince him to get in. After the shower, we got him into PJs and headed back downstairs for a quick game of Lego Star Wars. After a snack we headed up to bed, and he fell asleep pretty quickly when the lights went out.

Buster really seems to be into books right now, so M-lady read a couple of board books to him at bedtime. M-lady had little problem getting Buster to sleep, and both kids have slept quietly so far.

Acceptance

Buster had a terrible night, perhaps because the house stayed very hot during the night. M-lady brought him to bed around 1:30, and I took him back to his bed around 2:00 after he drove his forehead into my chest a few times. I sat next to his crib as he thrashed, and occasionally checked to see if I was still there.

M-lady relieved me at about 3:00, and ended up sleeping on the couch in his room. Bud woke him a bit before 7:00, and didn't want to head back to bed, so I played Lego with him for a little while.

Eventually Buster and M-lady got up, and we started to get ready for the day. Bud was a little reluctant to get dressed, but eventually came down to get breakfast with enough time to eat before M-lady took him to school. I fed Buster, who was still a little skeptical about Grandma Nese, but not quite as scared as yesterday.

I worked from home today to make sure Buster would be OK with Grandma Nese. After we finished breakfast, Buster hung out with me in the office for a little while as I worked before he got sleepy enough to take a nap. I was able to put him down around 9:45, and he slept until about 10:30, at which point Grandma Nese fetched him.

I heard him crying a bit, but soon settled down, and they apparently spent a good chunk of the morning reading books. I was glad to hear that Buster was OK with Grandma Nese after a brief protest.

I totally forgot to pick Bud up from school. M-lady called at noon, fifteen minutes after his scheduled pickup time, letting me know that the school had called her. I jetted over to the school and apologized to the teachers, who had put Bud to work helping clean up the classroom after class. Bud was chatting away, and the teachers were a little surprised by his talkativeness.

Buster got upset when he saw me leave, but was OK when I got home. We all had lunch together, and both kids ate pretty well. After lunch, Buster again hung out with me for a little while before going down for his afternoon nap. Grandma Nese and Bud played with Lego in the office as I worked, and had a lot of fun working on a couple of different models.

When Buster woke, Grandma Nese again fetched him, and this time he was pretty OK with it. She brought him in, and he blinked at all of us for a little while before she took him downstairs for a snack. He didn't eat a huge snack, but he ate a little bit with her. After his snack, she brought him back upstairs for a bath, which he really enjoyed.

The kids played downstairs with Grandma Nese for a bit as I finished up work, and after 5:00 I headed downstairs and joined them. Everyone seemed to be having fun, and I played with Buster a little bit before M-lady arrived home. Buster was really happy to see her.

We all had some dinner, and I played a little bit of Lego Star Wars with Bud before we got ready for bed. M-lady put Buster to bed around the same time, and both kids were asleep by 9:00. There have been a couple of minor wakings, but they've gone back to sleep quickly. The house is much cooler than last night, so everyone is more comfortable.

Development

Buster was again up around 6:00 this morning, and I heard him happily chirping away in his crib at about 7:30 as M-lady was getting ready for the day. Bud woke a short time later, and we all started getting ready.

It was a slightly different routine than usual, since I was staying home with Buster, and M-lady took Bud to our company day care for the day.
M-lady took Bud to day care at our company, and that worked out really well. Bud was great. The drop off went well, and Bud wandered off to check out the homeroom while M-lady was filling out paperwork. He waved goodbye to M-lady, and apparently had a good time.

M-lady picked him up around 2:30, and he hung out with her at her desk for a while before they came home. Even while he was there, he said hello to M-lady's coworkers and answered questions. That's a lot more interaction with strangers than he's usually up for.

Meanwhile, Buster and I had a very mellow morning. After breakfast, we played together for a while, and then had a solid morning nap. Then play, lunch, and more playtime. While chasing balls around the living room, Buster showed that he can now stand up without support. He does it generally without tripodding as well: he just plants a foot and stands up.

Grandma Nese arrived a little after 1:00. Buster was wary, but OK as long as I was around. A little before 2:00, he lay down on the hardwood floor in the dining room, and I took this as a sign that he might be ready for an afternoon nap. I deposited him in his crib and sat down next to it, and he was asleep after a little bit of tossing, turning, standing up, and falling back down.

Buster slept for a solid hour, but was pretty grouchy when he woke up. He didn't eat much of his banana for a snack, and was very suspicious of Grandma Nese. After a while he loosened up, though, and ate his banana. He even played with Grandma Nese a little bit, with me out of the room. He started getting a bit grumpy again as the day wore on, though.

M-lady arrived home with Bud around 5:30, and we had dinner. Buster was really hungry, which indicated that much of his grumpiness was probably because I didn't give him enough food at snacktime. He was a bit more approachable after dinner.

M-lady and Bud played some Lego Star Wars before bedtime while I fed Buster a bottle. Buster was clingy while going to sleep, and wasn't willing to go down in the crib until he was really out, rather than partly out. Bud took a late shower with me, which contributed to Buster not falling asleep quickly. Both kids were out by about 9:00, though.

Hopefully, Buster will be better with Grandma Nese tomorrow. I'll probably try to work from home tomorrow to ease the transition, though.

Sippy Cup

Buster was again up this morning around 6:00, and M-lady got up with him. Bud got me out of bed around 7:45, and immediately wanted to play with Lego.

I changed Buster's poopy diaper, and then got Bud ready to go to school. It took a while to convince him to wear shorts today, but we're having a bit of a heat wave, and I didn't want him to pass out at school. We eventually got him fed and he headed out the door with me, wishing M-lady a good day.

Nanny J is off for a few weeks, and all the grandparents are going to be pitching in to help take care of the kids, which is awesome. But we've got a couple of days to cover on our own, so M-lady took today off work to watch the kids. I'll be home with them tomorrow.

M-lady actually took Buster in to work briefly this morning, where he was well behaved and very much admired. But he kind of got shortchanged on his morning nap, and was pretty grumpy the rest of the day, apparently.

Bud's friend M and his mother came over for lunch after school, and Bud and M had a great time playing together. Bud, however, in his zeal to dress up as a Jedi, put on long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. He was dripping sweat when I got home a bit after 5:00.

I actually spent most of the evening taking care of Buster. He was grumpy and tired, and didn't want to eat dinner when we sat down for that. Figuring he might be hot, I got him a cup of water in a sippy cup. M-lady had tried a different cup earlier in the day without much success. But with the cup I tried, he figured out how to suck on the sipper and get some water. After drinking a bit, he had fun sucking water out and then letting it run out of his mouth, down his chin, and onto his tummy.

I managed to feed him, but he didn't want to let go of the sippy cup, so I had to work the spoon in around his hands and the cup. Eventually he had a pretty solid dinner, though. Bud and M-lady came down and joined us before too long, and Buster was content to munch on a biter biscuit while the rest of us ate.

After dinner, I gave Buster a bath in the bathtub for the first time. Nanny J has been bathing him in the tub for a while, but this was the first time I did. He was really excited as soon as I started drawing the water, and was annoyed that I stopped him to take his clothes off before putting him in.

He had a good bath, during which Bud was showing M-lady how to play Lego Star Wars. Buster and I came downstairs to watch a bit before getting Bud and snack and heading upstairs for bed.

Both kids fell asleep pretty quickly, and hopefully will sleep well tonight. It was a hot day, and the house is still pretty warm. Hopefully Buster gets a good night's sleep tonight, and won't be too shy of the visitor arriving tomorrow.

Shout out to Uncle D... Happy Birthday!

Not Much Sleep

Buster decided to get up this morning at about 3:30. M-lady got up with him, and they hung out in his play pen together. When he didn't go back to sleep when M-lady tried to put him down around 6:30, she sensibly handed him to me.

I hung out with him in his play pen for about an hour before Bud wandered into the office and started playing with Lego. I made a couple of unsuccessful attempts to get Buster to go back to sleep, and eventually we all headed downstairs for some breakfast. After eating, we played for a bit downstairs, where M-lady found us at about 9:30. I took my turn catching up on sleep while M-lady watched the kids.

Buster apparently took a nap around 10:30, and slept for about 90 minutes. I woke just in time to get him up from his nap, and we headed downstairs and got some lunch. M-lady fed him, but he was a little grumpy, and didn't eat much at the time.

The afternoon was pretty mellow, generally spent doing little chores around the house and playing with the kids. Buster didn't take an afternoon nap, which was surprising, and left him generally grumpy for a lot of the afternoon. Around 3:00ish, we had a video call with Grandma W and Granddad B, during which Buster was really animated, and they got to interact with him and watch him bounce around the living room for quite some time.

After that call, we were able to jump on a video conference and game with Cousin LR and family and Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Bud wasn't really interested in playing, but both kids interacted on the video call, which was nice.

Bud and I headed out to pick up sushi for dinner after the game wrapped up, and we all ate a big dinner. Buster had a couple of jars of baby food, along with some California roll innards, and Bud had his usual carrot, cucumber, and walnut rolls (along with the modified California roll which M-lady likes, the 'Stanford roll'). We always all end up feeling kind of bloated after eating sushi.

I eventually managed to convince Bud to take a shower with me, and got him cleaned up. It was a pretty hot day today, getting up around 90 degrees, and the house started warming up quite a bit in the evening. After the not-so-hot shower, I went around the house opening up windows, and the kids dressed in lighter weight pajamas than usual.

Bud and I played a little bit of Lego Star Wars before having a snack and heading for bed. Bud was well behaved through the bedtime routine, and in bed a little after 8:30. He was asleep around 9:00.

Buster woke up briefly around 9:30, but was back asleep pretty quickly. Bud woke once around 11:30, asking for more water. He also complained that the bed was wet around his head, so I got him a towel to lay his sweaty head on. I have to do the same thing, so I know he comes by it honestly.

A Star Wars Playdate

Buster was up this morning around 6:00, and M-lady got up with him. Bud got me out of bed a little after 7:00, and we shortly headed downstairs to watch some TV. M-lady brought Buster down to join us, and then headed upstairs for a nap. M-lady and I sort of tag-teamed for a good portion of the day in order to catch up on sleep.

While M-lady was napping the three of us watched some TV, hung out together, and got some breakfast. I got Bud dressed as M-lady was waking up, and then handed the kids to her and headed for a nap of my own.

M-lady fed Buster some breakfast, and then picked up a little bit in anticipation of Bud's friend M coming over for a playdate. Bud was really excited, asking if M was there yet repeatedly over the last half hour. He wanted to hide right before M arrived with his mother, but was content with putting his Jedi robe on and hiding in the hood. Shortly after M arrived, Bud handed him a lightsaber and they battled each other for the next couple of hours.

Friend M is also interested in Star Wars, so when they took a break from lightsaber battles, they looked over some of the Star Wars books Bud has, and played with the Lego sets as well. M-lady reported that they played on their own, with almost no intervention, for most of the visit.

They left right before lunch, and M-lady got Bud's lunch ready before handing the kids off to me again and heading for another nap. I fed Buster some lunch, and then played with the kids for a while in the playroom.

Bud got a little upset when Buster tried to grab a car from him, and went off to his room in a huff. M-lady talked to him about it a bit, and pointed out that Bud might get a little frustrated with Buster, but Buster is still a little too young to understand and respect what things he can have and what things he should try to grab.

After M-lady got up, I took another nap. The kids had a good time with her, and they read Puff the Magic Dragon together. Buster had a good time toddling around the room.

When I woke, it was time for Buster to have another nap, so I put him to sleep while M-lady and Bud headed out for a quick shopping trip to Target. Bud was apparently very well behaved, and blew off some excess energy by running round and round the cart. Buster woke shortly before they got home, and I played with the kids in the backyard for a little bit before we got started on dinner.

The kids ate pretty well, and we watched a little bit of TV together before starting a pretty standard bedtime routine. Bud was in bed around 8:30, and asleep shortly after 9:00. M-lady got Buster to fall asleep a little earlier than that. Both kids have slept well so far tonight.

Babysitter Night

Buster finally fell asleep around 12:30, and woke this morning sometime after 7:00. M-lady got up with him. Bud woke around 8:00, and came looking for me. I managed to stay in bed for a little while longer before getting up and getting him dressed.

Bud was patient with me while I got ready for work, and then watched a couple of minutes of the cel animated Clone Wars while I made a sandwich for myself for lunch. I got him some breakfast before I headed out the door for work.

The kids apparently had a good day today. They had fun at the library, and Bud reported that Buster didn't want to leave. When I got home in the late afternoon, Bud had taken his bath, and Buster was getting his.

I managed to rest for a little while before M-lady came home and Bud discovered I was already home. I got up a few minutes later and started getting ready for teaching a dance class in the evening with M-lady. Bud and I headed downstairs and got some dinner right before Babysitter G arrived.

Buster was a little skeptical of Babysitter G, since she hasn't yet cared for him while he was awake. Nanny J stayed long enough to feed Buster his dinner, and Buster was apparently reasonably OK in the evening playing with Bud while Babysitter G was there. But he wouldn't take his evening bottle (Bud used to do the same thing... fear of poisoning by strangers or something?) and cried himself to sleep at that point.

Bud was also a little shy, but apparently well behaved in the evening, going to bed at the right time. Both kids were sleeping soundly when M-lady and I returned a little later in the evening.

Curtains

The kids slept reasonably well last night. Bud got me out of bed around 7:00, and M-lady was up with Buster at about 6:00. Bud and I watched a little bit of TV this morning before I left him eating an apple for breakfast and started getting ready for work.

Bud and Buster seem to have had a good day. They didn't make it out to the library today, since Buster napped a little longer than usual. Bud did raid the pantry today and found an unguarded bag of jelly beans, which he decimated, but Nanny J eventually found him munching. I had thought we were past the candy raiding, but apparently not quite.

M-lady got home in time to get the kids from Nanny J, and had fun playing with them before I got home at about 6:00. Buster showed her one of his new favorite games while they were playing in the living room: he toddled over to the drapes, got himself entangled in the thin fabric, and turned and laughed while waving his arms. He's probably going to pull the drapes down soon, but he's having a great time with them.

Nanny J had made some stew today, which Bud had for lunch. M-lady and I enjoyed it for dinner, while Bud had a hot dog. I tried Buster on some of the stew, but he didn't seem to like it. Then he refused a Puffit, which he's been enjoying over the past few weeks, so it seems like it may have been a timing thing rather than a taste thing. We'll try him on the stew again tomorrow.

Bud and I watched a little bit of TV before having a bath and doing the bedtime routine. Bud was pretty cooperative through the process. He opted for his training toothpaste tonight, but I expect we'll be shifting to adult toothpaste full time before too long.

Bud protested the light going out, but fell asleep pretty quickly. Buster fussed a little while going to bed, and fell asleep in our bed with M-lady. I managed to transplant him to his crib around 9:30, and he woke again around 11:30. Hopefully he'll get back to sleep soon.

Real Tooth Paste

Bud was up before Buster this morning, around 7:30. I got up with him, and played Lego with him for a while. That was pretty much all he wanted to do this morning, and he was happily building away as I got dressed and ready for work.

The kids apparently had a good day. They took a trip to the library, where Bud had a good time, but Buster was apparently a little bit impatient and squirmy. Buster was pretty happy to see me when I walked in the door a little after 5:00, and Nanny J informed me that Bud was asleep. I'm not sure how or why he fell asleep, but he seemed to be taking a late afternoon nap.

Buster and I hung out together for a bit until M-lady arrived home. Buster was starting to look a little sleepy before M-lady arrived, so we got started on dinner pretty quickly. Bud woke shortly after M-lady got home, and wasn't grumpy, so that was good.

Bud and I played with Lego some more while M-lady got started on dinner with Buster. Bud showed a remarkable new skill: he was able to construct a section of the ship we were working on based on the pictures in the Lego construction manual. I helped by finding the pieces needed for each step, but he figured out where to put them and assembled them almost entirely by himself. It was neat to see, and shows quite a bit of spatial aptitude.

We eventually headed downstairs to have some dinner, and found Buster finishing up. Bud ate well, and we all had the last of the chocolate cake for dessert. Buster definitely likes the cake.

After dinner, Bud and I watched a little bit of the Clone Wars original animated series. Bud liked it, although he asked a lot of questions, as there's a lot of unstated motivations. The nice thing about the series, since it was originally presented as a series of 3-minute shorts, is that there's a good stopping point every three minutes.

We got ready for bed, and for the second night, Bud tried adult toothpaste when we brushed his teeth. He knows not to swallow it now, and seems to do pretty well with that. The real toothpaste foams a lot more than the training stuff, though, and he finds it hilarious as it drips out of his mouth. I've got to say, it's not easy brushing the teeth of a kid who's laughing hysterically and drooling foam everywhere. But we had a good time.

Bud was very cooperative in his bedtime routine right up to turning out the light. At that point, he protested, and clearly wasn't very tired, as he was still awake when I left him about an hour later. I think the nap helped his mood, but didn't help him fall asleep.

One Year Down

Buster was up shorty before 7:00 this morning, and M-lady got up with the birthday boy. Bud got me out of bed closer to 7:30, and we joined the others in the office where they were hanging out in Buster's playpen. Bud spent some time working on Lego before we headed downstairs to watch a little bit of TV.

Nanny J arrived at her usual time, around 8:45, bringing a card and a gift for Buster. It was a toy helicopter which Buster was immediately interested in, and playing with before it was removed from the box. I assume he had a good time playing with it today.

Bud was having some breakfast when I left for work. They went to the park this morning, even though it was a really windy day today. There they met Friend M and his mother, as planned, and the two kids played together for a while before the chilly wind cut the play date a little bit short.

M-lady was home to take the kids at 5:15, and I arrived home around 6:00 to find Bud playing with Lego and M-lady and Buster playing in his playpen. Bud apparently spent the afternoon making little Lego spacecraft, and had a small armada arranged on the folding table we'd set up to keep the small pieces off the floor. He told me a little bout his day, and reported that Buster had taken three naps today.

After I got settled, we started video calls with the grandparents so they could see Buster open his gifts. Buster was interested in seeing his grandparents, but also very interested in the gifts. In fact, all the gifts were winners, and held Busters attention for quite some time. The boys spent the rest of the evening until dinner time playing with Buster's new items.

Both kids ate a good dinner, and we shared some of Buster's birthday cake for dessert. Buster started clamoring for the cake as soon as he saw it brought to the table, and happily munched away at the pieces M-lady provided for him.

I got Bud into the bathtub shortly after that, and then straight on to the bedtime routine as it was pretty late. Bud resisted turning the light out, but fell asleep before 9:00. Buster was asleep around the same time, although he did wake once around 11:00. We managed to get him back to sleep in his crib after a little bit of rocking.

It's amazing that Buster's a whole year old now. He's toddling well, reaching for things on tables, and talking is sure to come shortly. I'm looking forward to the next year, as he develops more and more into a person, and getting rid of a lot of the baby items taking up space. I can understand people missing the baby phase after it's done, as I feel some faint twangs myself, but I'm really not going to miss the accompanying lack of sleep and general life. It's been a fun year with both boys, though. Bud has been a fantastic older brother, and continues to develop in that role.

I also wanted to give a shout and congratulations out to my cousin C and his wife L, who had healthy twins today, a boy and a girl. Everybody's apparently doing well. So Buster's got a pair of cousins who share his birthday, one year younger!

Spring Break

The kids slept pretty well through the night. Buster woke about 7:30, and shortly after M-lady went to attend to him, Bud came to roll me out of bed. We headed downstairs and watched some of Star Wars Episode I before Nanny J arrived.

Bud is on spring break this week, so he doesn't have any need to get dressed or fed in the morning. He was eating breakfast in his PJs when I left for work around 9:00.

The kids seem to have had a good day. They went to the park in the morning, Buster had his two naps, and Bud and Nanny J made letters with Lego blocks. I arrived home just about 5:00, and found Bud with his Jedi robe on and Buster playing in his playpen with Nanny J.

After Nanny J left, the three of us headed upstairs, where Bud played with Lego as I had Buster sit on my lap while I wrapped up some work. Buster also spent some time in his playpen, tossing toys out, saying "Uh-oh," and waiting for me to toss them back in. M-lady arrived home a short time later.

We played together downstairs for a little while as M-lady was on a call, but she joined us shortly and we got started on dinner. Bud deferred dinner a bit, enjoying his Lego ship building, but eventually came down. After dinner, we headed upstairs to play a little more Lego before starting in on a bath and getting ready for bed.

Bud was a little resistant in the bath, but willing to head for bed when the time came. Buster also went to sleep without too much fuss. Buster woke again around 10:30 and was up for a little while, but fell asleep again by about 11:00.

Household Egg Hunt

The kids were up sometime early this morning. Buster had a slightly restless night, and M-lady brought him to bed at some point, and then took him to the office playpen shortly before Bud came and got me up. I'm really not certain of the times that all this occurred, other than it was light out, but not very.

Bud and I joined the M-lady and Buster in the office, and played with Lego for a bit. I excused myself and headed downstairs to hide Easter Eggs, then came back up to let everyone know it was OK to go downstairs. Bud was pretty excited to do the in-house egg hunt.

Buster found an egg I'd left on the floor, and was pretty proud of himself. Bud eventually found all the other eggs, although he needed a few hints. He acquitted himself well, though. He immediately snarfed all the goldfish crackers we'd put into some of the eggs, but was willing to wait on the chocolate. I made some cinnamon rolls for breakfast, and we all munched.

I headed back to bed for a little bit, and M-lady held down the fort. I woke when Bud came to play as M-lady was putting Buster down for his nap. Bud and I read stories in his room for a bit, trying to keep quiet as Buster and M-lady napped.

It was about lunchtime when everyone was awake again. After lunch, I headed off to Home Depot to find some new heat registers, as Buster had cut his finger on one of the metal ones a few days ago. I wasn't able to convince Bud to come with me, so he stayed home with M-lady and Buster.

When I got back, Bud and I played outside for a while. It was a beautiful day, and we were able to play some lacrosse and baseball on the front lawn in shorts and t-shirts. Eventually he got a little tired of chasing a ball around, and enjoyed eating oranges while I worked picking them. After getting a full bucket of oranges, we headed inside to see how things were going.

We had a video chat and game session with Cousin LR and family, and Granddad B and Grandma Nese for a little while. Buster showed off his toddling while Bud and I took turns playing the game. After playing for a bit, we bid the family a good night, and signed off. Shortly afterward, we started up a video call and game with Grandma W and Granddad B.

Buster was really anxious to get at the computer while we chatted with them, so I eventually had to put the laptop on top of the TV. I need to find a better place to put the laptop so Buster doesn't get at it. Or figure out how to lock the keyboard. In any case, they got to see Buster toddling as well, and we played a few games together, although Bud wasn't interested in joining in. I think he really wants to be good at the game before playing, so I work with him a little bit until he's willing to play.

We had some dinner a short time later. Bud ate well, but Buster had just finished up a snack a short time earlier, so didn't eat very much. After getting dinner cleaned up, Bud and I watched a little bit of Star Wars Episode IV before starting in on bedtime.

Bud was pretty good about going to bed, but didn't fall asleep until nearly 9:00. Buster went to sleep a little before that, and both kids have slept well so far.

Bud is off from school this week, so we're going to have to find some activities for him.

Easter Eggs and First Birthday Party

Buster didn't sleep really well last night, joining us in bed about halfway through the night. Bud got me out of bed around 7:00, and we headed downstairs and watched a good portion of Star Wars Episode I together before M-lady and Buster joined us.

We all had some breakfast together, and Bud and I headed upstairs to play with Lego for a little while. Buster and M-lady joined us, and we all had a good time. Buster showed off his walking quite a bit this morning, giggling as he toddled around. He's now really officially walking, with occasional sit downs. He has not yet stood up without grabbing on to something, so I expect that to be the next skill.

I took a little nap in the later morning while Buster was napping, and joined the family in time to get started on lunch. Both kids ate pretty well as M-lady took her turn at a quick nap. After lunch we got everyone ready to go to a local easter egg hunt.

Bud was a little skeptical about the whole event, but held on to his bucket and lined up on the edge of the field littered with candy and eggs with the other kids. At the gun, all the younger kids went, and Bud took about two steps before he turned around and decided he didn't want any part of it. We couldn't get him to participate, I think because he wasn't comfortable with all the people around and he didn't get the first couple of things he targeted. I should have suggested he run ahead of everyone before stopping to pick something up.

In any case, we hung around a bit and saw Bud's friend M and met his family, which was nice. I also convinced Bud to go get some cotton candy which was being offered, which he eventually got excited about. We headed home after spending about an hour at the event.

We all shared a little bit of Bud's cotton candy at home, and then managed to get Buster down for his nap. I took a quick trip to Home Depot while M-lady held down the fort. When I got home, Bud worked in the garage with me for a little while before Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C arrived to have dinner and celebrate Buster's first birthday.

It was a pretty low-key party. I grilled burgers and dogs while Buster and Cousin C showed off their walking, occasionally colliding. Buster got a fun stuffed flower pot from Cousin C and family, to which he took an immediate liking. After we'd all eaten dinner, he had a slice of chocolate cake, and made a proper mess of himself while thoroughly enjoying the sugar.

Cousin C and family took their leave after the cake, and I got Buster into the shower after we'd cleaned him up enough to move. Bud also decided to join me in the shower, so both kids got cleaned up. After the shower, Bud and I headed downstairs and watched a little bit of Star Wars Episode IV before having a snack and heading for bed. Bud was pretty tractable at bedtime tonight, which was a nice change.

Buster woke a couple of times in the evening, but was able to go back to sleep pretty quickly. Hopefully he sleeps well through the night.

Going to a Friend's House

The kids slept reasonably well through the night, and we all got up around 7:30ish. M-lady helped get Bud dressed and ready to go, all the while briefing him repeated on the plan for the day.

Bud was going over to a friend's house without a parent for the first time. After Bud finished up school, he was going to go with Friend K and his mom, Teacher J, and get some lunch, and then play at their house for the afternoon. Bud was pretty excited and nervous about it. When I took him to school, he hid behind me when Teacher J came to talk to us, but he headed into class without any problems.

Apparently Bud had a good day. They went to Red Robin for lunch, where Bud ate a corndog. Then they apparently spent a good chunk of the afternoon playing video games. Ones we don't have. Really.

They apparently had a Clone Wars lightsaber fighting game for the Wii which took up most of the afternoon. Bud was pretty excited about it when he got home. M-lady got home from work shortly after 5:00, and with some prompting Bud recounted his afternoon to her.

I wasn't able to make it home until nearly 6:30, but the kids were happy to see me when I got home. We all played together for a little bit before dinner, and Buster showed off his improved walking skills, stringing together many steps. We can pretty much say he's walking now, even though he's still a bit wobbly and still occasionally lunging for handholds.

We all had some dinner together, and then Bud and I played a little bit while M-lady tended Buster. Bud and I did end up watching a few minutes of the Clone Wars movie before heading up bed. Bud had a big meltdown before bed, probably due to an extra-tiring day. It took a little while to get him to calm down and get into PJs. Both he and Buster were asleep pretty early this evening.

Mommy's Return

The kids slept solidly though the night last night, which was great. Buster woke at about 7:30 with a stinky diaper, and I got him cleaned up and smelling a bit better. He was reasonably content to sit in his crib while I got myself dressed and started picking up a bit.

Bud woke a short time later, and spent most of the morning playing with Lego.

I alternately played with Bud, handled email, and picked up the house, all while toting Buster around. Overall, it was a slightly stressful but not-too-bad morning. Nanny J arrived around 8:45, and the house cleaners arrived around 9:00. I headed for work a short time later, after getting Bud some breakfast.

The kids had a good day, and were excited when M-lady returned at about 4:15. Bud went to see her when he heard the garage door open, and Buster brightened up from his highchair where he was munching away on a snack.

I got home close to 5:30, and found the kids happily playing with M-lady. I had a lot of work to do, so headed upstairs to the office to reconnect. The family followed me up, and we all enjoyed each others company for a while.

M-lady fed Buster dinner and got some food for herself, and I came down with Bud to get him fed a short time later. I had eaten a large, late lunch, so didn't eat much dinner at the time. After dinner it was pushing 7:30, but we watched a few minutes of The Clone Wars before having a little treat and heading upstairs.

Bud had a meltdown when it was time to take a bath, but I eventually got him cleaned up as 8:30 approached. M-lady got him into PJs, I read him a quick story, and then M-lady lay down with him in bed for a little while as he fell asleep.

Buster had gone to bed around 8:00 without much issue. He woke briefly later in the evening, but went back to sleep without too much trouble. Hopefully the kids will sleep well again tonight.

Another Star Wars Chapter

Both kids slept pretty well through the night, which was nice. Buster woke a little after 5:00, and after refusing to sleep in his crib, thrashed in bed with me for a while. At about 6:30, I took him to the playpen in the office, where we both slept until about 7:30, when Bud found us.

Both the kids were happy this morning, which was nice. Bud was pretty good about getting dressed and having breakfast and being ready to go to school in between playing with the Lego. Buster was content standing in his crib while I got dressed and ready, which was nice. Overall, the morning was pretty smooth sailing.

Bud and I were approached by Friend M and his mother at the school drop off this morning, asking about the possibility of a play date. Friend M has apparently been talking about Bud as much as Bud has been mentioning Friend M, so hopefully this will be fun for both kids. They're both very into Star Wars, so I expect some really epic lightsaber battles.

The kids apparently had a pretty good day, and were enjoying themselves, playing together and with Nanny J, when I arrived home. Bud was happy to see me, and followed me around as I dropped my things. Buster had ditched his band-aid, but didn't seem to be having any issue with the cut. We said goodbye to Nanny J, and I pulled out my trump card for the evening.

I had Netflixed the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie, and we watched that for a while before starting on dinner. Bud was pretty excited, although he asked about character motivations and what was going on every 5 to 10 seconds or so.

Bud and I made a pizza for dinner, and he helped me put it together, which was fun. Buster entertained himself by standing in front of the blower for the preheating oven, and giggled quite a bit. Once the pizza was in the oven, I fed Buster his dinner.

We tried a different brand of quick organic quiche-like meal for Buster, but he really didn't like it. So he ended up eating a jar of baby food and some of my pizza. After we'd all eaten, we read a story together and watched a little more TV before getting into the bedtime routine.

I fed Buster a final bottle, bagged him, and got a snack for Bud. We headed upstairs and got Bud into his PJs, and I put Buster down while Bud read to himself for a few minutes. Buster fell asleep nearly instantly, since he was pretty tired. Going back to Bud, I read him a story and turned out the lights. He lodged his usual protest, but was asleep before 9:00.

Taking care of both kids has been busy, but certainly not unmanageable. We're looking forward to having M-lady come back home tomorrow, though.

Two On One

Buster didn't sleep really well last night, and M-lady brought him to our bed sometime around 3:00ish, I guess. Then Bud got me out of bed around 3:30, and I slept with him in his room until about 5:00. Apparently Buster took the opportunity to cover as much of the bed as he could in my absence.

M-lady, Buster, and I all got up around 7:30ish, and started getting ready for the day. Bud decided to sleep in, and didn't wake until around 8:30. He was pretty happy and bouncy when he got out of bed, though, and immediately sat down to play with the Lego.

M-lady was heading down to San Diego to visit her folks today, so has the next few days off work. I left for work shortly before Nanny J arrived. After Nanny J showed up, M-lady finished up packing and headed to the airport.

The kids apparently had a good day, although a rainstorm which came up fast today prevented their usual park outing. Bud enjoyed playing with Lego again today, but I don't think he spent quite so much time at it.

I got home around 5:00, and Bud followed me around chatting while I dropped my stuff and wrapped up a couple of work items. I headed back downstairs around 5:15 to retrieve Buster and say goodbye to Nanny J.

Apparently Buster had crawled over to the window and managed to cut one of his fingers on the heating vent in the floor. He didn't seem to mind the cut at all, but he was getting blood on everything. I haven't figured out what we're going to do about the drapes yet. In any case, I managed to get a band-aid on his finger while Nanny J held him before she left. Buster was a bit perturbed by the band-aid on his finger, trying to figure out what it was, but he wasn't bleeding on everything.

The three of us had a mellow evening together, starting by watching a little bit of TV. Buster eventually managed to get his band-aid off, so I got a new one on. It's tough holding a wriggling one-year-old while trying to delicately bandage one of his fingertips. The second band-aid lasted most of the evening, although he did start trying to chew on it.

I diverted the chewing by getting started on dinner. Both kids ate well, although Buster ate pretty slowly. When we finished up, I managed to convince Bud to get in a bath, while Buster played around us in the bathroom. After I got Bud dried off and in PJs, we had a quick video call with M-lady, Ama, and Agu. Both kids were happy to see their mom, but I think Buster was a little confused. In any case, it was nice to chat a little and say hi.

We headed downstairs where I fed Buster his pre-bedtime bottle while Bud played some Lego Star Wars on his own. He did a good job playing on his own for the first time. Bud had a snack after playing, and then we headed upstairs to finish up the bedtime routine.

We read a story together, and I tucked Bud in and then went and put Buster to sleep. He was pretty tired at this point, and fell asleep quickly. I went back and checked on Bud, who fell asleep a short time later. Both kids have slept soundly through the evening, which is nice. Hopefully the night will be uneventful.

Lego Mania

The kids slept well through the night, which was a nice change. Bud woke us a little after 7:00, and I got up with him. Rather than ask to go downstairs to watch TV, he wanted me to go build Lego with him. Buster woke a short time later, and M-lady tended to him.

We spent a good chunk of the morning building together. I managed to get him to come downstairs and have some breakfast before school; he bolted his food and headed back upstairs for a few more minutes of Lego play before we headed out.

Bud had a good day at school, and apparently spent most of the afternoon playing with the Lego as well. Nanny J reported that he disappeared to the Lego table for hours at a time. Buster apparently wasn't interested in napping much today, and consequently was a little grumpy towards the end of the day.

M-lady and I both arrived home right around 5:00. Bud showed me what he'd been building: mostly different spaceships, but also a clever little robot with arms. His imagination and building capabilities are better than I would have thought.

I took the opportunity of good weather and cooperative kids to run out for a bike ride. Bud apparently continued playing with Lego while M-lady looked at some pictures with Buster. I got home around 6:30, and found Buster having some dinner. Bud hadn't left his Lego table.

I got some dinner for myself, and convinced Bud to come eat. He did eat a pretty good dinner, and then played some Lego Indiana Jones with me before we started the bedtime routine. Bud was a little reluctant to go to bed, but ended up falling asleep around 9:00. Buster fell asleep a bit earlier, clearly tired from going short on his naps today.

Lego Revisited

Buster again didn't sleep well last night. M-lady slept with him in his playpen in the office, where he slept fitfully. M-lady handed him to me around 6:00am, and crawled into bed to let her hip relax after lying on the floor all night.

I took Buster and crawled right back into the playpen with him, where he played for a few minutes before toppling over and falling asleep. We slept together on the floor there until Bud found us at nearly 8:30.

As Buster woke, he was pretty cheerful, so both the kids were bright and happy. M-lady took them downstairs to get some breakfast while I lay on the bed and snoozed, waiting for my shoulder to recover after lying on the floor for a couple of hours.

I got up and joined the family, and after settling in a bit we had a nice video chat with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. I discovered that I could put a large, flat book on the keyboard of the laptop to deter Buster from hitting keys while we chatted.

After the call, Bud and I got started on playing with some of his Lego while Buster took his morning nap. Bud has become very good at building with Lego, and enjoys making spaceships. He has an eye for symmetrical design, with deliberate and artistic asymmetries. Each ship he builds becomes more and more elaborate.

We kept at it until lunchtime, when I grilled some hotdogs for the family. Bud ate his dog, then half of Buster's, then half of M-lady's. I guess he liked the dogs. Buster had some pieces of hotdog for the first time, and seemed to enjoy them.

After lunch Bud and I played with Lego a little bit more before I started getting ready for a bike ride. Bud played outside with M-lady (stomp rockets, baseball, and lacrosse) while I got things set up, and I loaded Buster into the trailer for his first ride. He fussed a little bit as I put him in, since it was really a new experience, but he seemed to just take it in as we rode about a mile around the block. I turned him over to M-lady, and loaded Bud up for a longer ride.

I'm not yet back in real shape yet, so it was a short ride with Bud. He's gotten heavier as well... it'll be time for him to start helping. He already wants to ride along, and tried to follow me on his tricycle as I rode with Buster.

We got home and cleaned up a little bit, and then had a nice video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Bud and Buster both interacted, although Bud was a little rambunctious during the call. We also managed to set up network play of Mario Kart Wii, so we'll be able to play games with them in the future. Bud really enjoyed playing Mario Kart with them.

We set up for dinner after the call, and both kids ate well. Looking back at our logs for Bud when he was about a year old, we discovered that we'd been more aggressive with introducing him to solid foods. So we're trying to share as much as we can with Buster now, and he seems to be game for just about everything he's seen us eat.

After dinner I got Bud into the shower, we had a snack, and headed for bed. He protested that he wasn't sleepy when the light went out, but did fall asleep before 9:00. Buster was asleep around 8:15, but woke briefly at 9:00. I was able to get him back to sleep within about 10 minutes, and he's slept well so far. Hopefully, he'll get back to sleeping solidly through the night.

Baby Party

Buster didn't sleep well this morning. M-lady was up with him for a while starting at about 4:00, and then he thrashed around in our bed for a while. I got up with him at 6:00, and managed to get him to sleep for about 40 minutes, before he woke around 7:00. Bud got up then as well, so I did the morning thing with him. M-lady had discovered that the local dealership did service on Saturdays starting at 7:00, so she took Buster with her and headed off to get the oil in her car changed.

Bud and I watched a little TV, and worked on getting some breakfast after that. Sadly, we were out of milk, so Bud had dry Rice Krispies for breakfast. After eating a bit, we played together for a while. M-lady arrived home with Buster, and after feeding Buster a little bit, the kids and I played together and let M-lady rest for a little bit.

M-lady got up and got Bud dressed, and I snoozed for a bit. They had a good time reading stories together. When I got up again, around mid-morning, Buster was hanging out in his playpen and Bud and M-lady were working on a second-gen version of his blue plush lightsaber.

We all had an early lunch and started getting ready to go over to Aunt O and Uncle C's place. They were celebrating Cousin C's first birthday (and their survival of the first year). We managed to get on the road close to 12:30, and arrived around the scheduled start time, around 1:00.

Bud was a bit shy of all the party guests, but Buster enjoyed playing with some of Cousin C's toys. Bud and Buster were the only other kids at the party, so Buster enjoyed his share of attention. Bud holed up in another room, contenting himself with a book for a good chunk of the party. The kids ended up eating while we were there: Buster a banana, and Bud a hefty serving of the party fare. Buster also ate some watermelon and cantaloupe while we were there, his first exposure to those as far as we know.

We took our leave mid-afternoon to let the kids get a nap in. Both kids drifted off on the drive home, and snoozed in the car for a bit after we got home. They eventually awoke, and Bud had a bit of a meltdown on waking. He eventually pulled it together and came with me to the grocery store.

We had a good time shopping, and I got started making waffles and bacon for dinner. Bud ate a waffle and some bacon, and Buster ended up eating an entire waffle on top of his usual dinner. It was nearing 7:00 when we got finished and cleaned up, and I took Buster in the shower to get him cleaned up while M-lady and Bud read stories together.

Bud and I got a snack, sharing an apple, and then brushed teeth and headed for bed. Bud was still up when I left him at about 9:00 to see about helping to put an agitated Buster to bed. Buster has been up and down all evening, clearly uncomfortable about something. The current going theory is that he ate too much (the waffle on top of the usual dinner seemed a bit much).

Bud was asleep when I checked on him about 9:20, and has been sleeping just fine.

Buster is improving his walking. I saw him string together about 8 steps today, even though they were pretty small steps. He spent some time excited about walking today, and tried to do it quite a few times in a row, even on the hardwood floor in the kitchen. We'll see if we can get some good video of him walking tomorrow.

More Steps

Buster woke around 7:30, I believe, and Bud was up around 8:00. M-lady and I were both in the bathroom when Bud got up, so he was a little confused at first when he didn't find us in bed. Both kids were happy this morning, and Bud was cheerful and cooperative while getting ready for school. Bud and I got out the door when Nanny J arrived, and I we were able to hang out for a few minutes at school together before the door opened.

The kids had a good day with Nanny J. M-lady arrived home around 3:30 this afternoon to take Bud to friend J's birthday party, held in the late afternoon at Pump It Up. They had a great time, and Bud showed increasing social maturity and courage. He interacted well with the other kids, many of whom he didn't know, and was also went on some of the bigger slides without M-lady's accompaniment.

I got home around 5:00, and took Buster from Nanny J at about 5:15. Buster and I played together until M-lady and Bud arrived home near 7:00. We had fun chasing each other around, playing with balls, and reading stories. I fed him dinner around 6:30, and he ate pretty well. He was pretty happy to see Bud and M-lady get home when they arrived.

We all played together for a bit, since Bud and M-lady had already had some dinner. Bud was still pretty wound up, and bounced off the walls for a bit. Buster chased him around, and showed off some walking attempts as well. He's doing two or three steps at a time pretty regularly, and standing very stably. Later in the evening Buster chained about six steps together, and looked very proud of himself.

Bud and I took a shower before having a snack and heading for bed. After getting him calmed down a little, he was cooperative and fell asleep when the lights went out pretty quickly. Buster also fell asleep around the same time, and both kids have slept peacefully though the evening.

Fear of a Red Ball

The kids were up around their usual times this morning, and M-lady handled them. Both kids slept reasonably well through the night, which was nice.

I had to head to work a little early, but both the kids seemed to be in a good mood. Bud gave me a hug before I headed out, and promised to be good. Buster just cooed at me.

The kids apparently had a good day, heading out to the park in the later morning. Bud had a reasonable lunch, if not super. Buster's coming up on not needing formula anymore... can't wait!

I got home right around 5:15, and we said goodbye to Nanny J. The boys and I played together for a bit while waiting for M-lady to get home. We had fun playing ball together in the living room, and Buster still loves to be picked up to kick the ball.

Buster does not like Bud's Phlat Ball. He gets really nervous when it's around, and actually screams in fear when he sees it get flattened. I'm not sure if he's scared of the 'destruction' of the ball, or the surprise pop that follows, though. We make sure to put the Phlat Ball away while Buster's around, though.

M-lady arrived home a bit before 6:00, and we got started on dinner. Bud deferred again, and then headed upstairs to take a bath with me. He was slow taking a bath, so we went straight from bath to PJs to bed. He eventually wanted a snack, so we headed down to finish his dinner and have a little snack on top of that.

At that point M-lady finished putting Bud to bed while I rocked an agitated and very tired Buster to sleep. M-lady's arm is a little sore, possibly from handling a squirming baby, and so was having trouble picking Buster up. He got a little mad when she left, but passed out pretty quickly after that. I was able to put him in his crib around 8:30, and he's slept solidly since then. Bud didn't fall asleep until closer to 9:00.

First Steps

Buster didn't sleep well last night, and consequently neither M-lady nor I did. He woke around 2:45, and I was up with him until nearly 4:00, when I handed him off to M-lady. She managed to get him to sleep around 6:00, but he was up again around 6:30, when I took him again. Buster didn't go back to sleep until his morning nap around 10:00ish.

Bud got M-lady out of bed a little before 7:00, and was anxious to get up at first. About twenty minutes later, he started complaining of a tummy ache, which we wrote off to being hungry since he hadn't had dinner the night before. But then he barfed.

Bud felt better after vomiting, but of course we canceled the getting ready for school plans, and he headed back to bed. I decided to work from home in the morning, and M-lady came home mid-afternoon so we could be home with him most of the day.

Bud slept for a chunk of the morning, and by the time I got on a call for work around 10:30 seemed to be feeling better. By lunchtime he was back to his usual self, and ate a pretty standard lunch and was just heading downstairs for a snack when I headed out to the office.

The kids both looked pretty happy when I got home around 5:30. M-lady took a brief nap, and I played a little bit of Mario Kart with Bud while Buster looked on and crawled about the room. We got started on an ad-hoc sort of dinner when M-lady joined us.

Buster showed a couple of tentative walking attempts today, taking a step before sitting down and crawling. He's really close now. It's very exciting. We'll see if he really gets going in the next couple of weeks before his birthday. Time to get the video camera ready.

By the end of the evening, Bud seemed fine. He didn't want to go to bed, as usual, and fell asleep around 9:00ish. Buster was pretty groggy after dinner (having not slept much last night), and M-lady tried to get him to bed a little early, without much success. Buster finally passed out around 8:30. Hopefully he'll sleep better tonight.
