Fun Play Date

Bud woke me at about 7:00 this morning, and we did the usual. M-lady managed to go back to bed for a while after Buster was up this morning, and I held Buster for a little while to make sure she could snooze a little bit extra.

At about 10:30, Bud's friend J arrived with his mom. Bud and J had a great time playing together, running around and throwing balls at each other. After they worked themselves into a lather, we stopped for lunch for a while. They settled in to play with Bud's train set for a bit after lunch, and J took off around 1:30 or so.

I settled in with Bud to watch a little TV and chill out. Bud had only eaten a couple bites of lunch, so around 3:00 I suggested a snack. Bud had a major meltdown, and after spending some time wailing in his room, we talked about it and he agreed to have a snack. No nap, though.

Bud and I played together a little bit after his snack, and then I went out to grab some dinner. Bud ate a little bit for dinner, and afterward I managed to convince him to take a shower with me. We had fun in the shower, and jumped into PJs afterward, kicking off the bedtime routine. Bud was pretty good through the routine, and went to sleep a little after 8:30.

Buster was fussy today, with indications that something was making him uncomfortable. He screamed a lot more than usual, and was extremely sensitive. Either M-lady or I was holding him almost the entire day. He did eat a little from the bottle, maybe a total of 4 ounces or so, but it was short bursts over a couple of hours.

I finally got him to fall asleep around 9:00. M-lady and I theorize growing pains were bothering him, and hopefully won't be as severe tomorrow.

Mellow Celebration

Bud got me out of bed this morning at about 7:30, and we did our usual morning routine. M-lady brought Bud down at about 8:30, after Bud and I had each had an Eggo. The family gave me some birthday presents at that point, and Bud immediate ran off with the ones he found interesting.

We had a pretty mellow morning together. I made some video calls to family, and had the opportunity to show off Buster. Bud was a little less willing to be involved in the calls, and watched some videos with M-lady on her computer instead.

After lunch, M-lady took Bud to the grocery store while I snoozed a little with Buster. Bud was apparently really well behaved for M-lady, with no coaxing required for the trip. They had a good time together.

At about 4:30 Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C showed up. It's been really nice of them to come over here so many days this week. While they got settled, Bud and I put together the pizzas we would be having for dinner. Bud helped out a lot, and really seemed to enjoy putting cheese and toppings on the pizzas.

We all had a nice dinner together, and M-lady brought out the cake that Bud had picked out when they went shopping. It was really good, and Bud inhaled his piece pretty quickly. After dinner we played together just a little bit before settling in front of the TV.

Uncle C and I left to see a movie at about 7:30. Bud promised to be good, and did that pretty well. M-lady started getting him ready for bed, and then had to leave him while she took care of Buster. Bud waited for her very patiently in his room, which was really good of him. He fell asleep pretty quickly after that, since it was pretty late.

A big thank you to M-lady and family for making my birthday nice and relaxed.

Family Help

Buster was up at about 5:30 this morning, and kept M-lady up after that. I got up with Bud around 8:30, and M-lady handed Buster to me shortly after we got settled in front of the TV so that she could snooze a little bit. The three of us watched some TV for a while, and then played in the living room for a bit together before Buster started acting a bit hungry and I handed him off again to M-lady.

For whatever reason I was really tired today, and fell asleep on the floor while playing with Bud. Bud kept asking me to wake up, and I felt really bad that I kept falling asleep. I'll have to try to get to bed earlier tonight.

A little before noon Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C arrived. M-lady and I were teaching a couple of dance classes at Stanford in the afternoon, and they had agreed to babysit. M-lady gave Bud a new floor puzzle to entertain him for a while when we left, and he kept wanting to open it before we were gone. He gave me a hug goodbye and immediately ran to the box.

Bud was apparently really well behaved while we were gone, but Buster melted down for a bit when he got hungry. He refused the bottle today (he was fine with it yesterday, though). Cousin C apparently also had a meltdown, but not at the same time as Buster. So it could have been worse. The family was really generous to babysit for us while we were teaching, though.

Bud watched some of High School Musical 2 while we were gone, and he was pretty excited when we got back. M-lady fed Buster, and I played with Bud for a bit after Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C took off. After some tackle baseball, we chilled out watching the rest of High School Musical 2. At that point, I rocked Buster to sleep for a bit and M-lady got Bud to eat some dinner.

We traded kids again, and I got Bud ready for bed while M-lady put Buster down for the night. Bud was a little extra rambunctious going to bed, which I thought was odd since he was clearly pretty tired. I hope we can get outside a bit more tomorrow, since he's been cooped up with the bad air quality for the past few days.

Buster's First Shower and Trip to Roble

Bud woke this morning around 7:15, but was willing to chill in his room for a bit before we got up. I got him dressed, and we watched a little TV and then played together for a bit before Bud watched me get dressed.

Buster had barfed a couple of times during the night, so I took him in the shower with me after he was awake for the first time. He was a little unsure of the experience, but not really upset until a bit later in the process. And he got clean, so it was a win. Bud was curious about Buster in the shower with me, but I couldn't convince him to take a shower next.

Bud and I had some lunch together, and he requested a PB&J sandwich. He inhaled it, and then had a few jelly beans for dessert. We played a bit more before I took Buster from M-lady for a bit.

Buster fell asleep on my shoulder, and I set him down on our bed and lay down next to him. We ended up both taking a nap there. So Buster had a really good afternoon nap. Bud ended up spending a good portion of the afternoon playing with M-lady, which they both really enjoyed.

As evening approached we got started on preparations to go to opening night of the Stanford Dance Weekend. Bud and I had some dinner together. I put together a rice and stir-fry bowl for him, which he asked for cold. I offered to heat it just a little, but he declined, and munched away on the refrigerator-cold stir-fry.

After dinner, we packed up and headed to the event. It was mostly socializing, with M-lady and I getting introduced to the students before the evening classes started. We're only teaching tomorrow, so we were able to bail shortly after that. Bud was a bit shy during the evening. M-lady walked with him out in the courtyard while I was troubleshooting an audio issue, and I sat with him in the balcony while M-lady chatted with folks. He was really well behaved over all, though.

Buster was widely admired, and was also quiet through the whole event until he got hungry right at the very end. We fed him and made our way home.

We got home a little too late for Bud to catch his usual TV program, so we watched The Upside Down Show for the first time. It's a little frenetic, but Bud seemed to enjoy it.

Bud was pretty good through the bedtime routine, and was asleep around 9:00. M-lady once again took care of Buster this evening, getting him fed and into bed around the same time.

Road Trip Test Run

Bud woke this morning around 7:40, and I got up with him and did the usual morning routine. M-lady was up and down with Buster during the morning, but joined us around 8:30 for some breakfast toast.

M-lady and I have been considering a brief day trip down to the Monterey Bay Aquarium sometime next week, but we were unsure how Buster would handle 90 minutes in the car. So we planned a quick trip down to Gilroy today so I could pick up an item from the Pearl Izumi store at the outlet mall. We spent the rest of the morning getting ready for the outing.

Due to bad air quality, Aunt O and Cousin C came over to hang out at our place. The arrived just before we left, and napped a bit while we were gone.

Bud was really well behaved on the drive, but Buster didn't fare so well. He would doze off for a few minutes, then wake up and scream for a bit, and then doze off again right when we were getting ready to pull off the freeway to comfort him. Bud was a champ, and tolerated the noisy car without complaint.

Buster was much happier being held when we arrived, and we all had lunch together after the Pearl Izumi mission. After lunch we did a little wandering and shopping, finally stopping at the Jelly Belly store to pick up a treat for Bud. He got a bunch of green (apple) and purple (tropical punch) jelly beans, which will be doled out over the next month or so.

The kids behaved in just about the same fashion on the drive back. Since Buster doesn't seem very comfortable riding in the car, the Monterey trip is tabled for the moment. We'll work on a way to make him happier in the car.

We spent the afternoon holed up, taking advantage of the houses good air filters built into the HVAC system. Due to the wildfires in California right now, there's a pretty high concentration of particulate matter in the air, and we weren't interested in getting it into our lungs.

Bud found a DVD which M-lady had received as a goody giveaway from our employer, I belive, entitled Potty Power. He was excited to watch it. And while it was pretty painful for M-lady and I to watch adults and kids cheerfully explain how to use a potty, complete with a talking roll of toilet paper and songs about wiping, Bud asked to watch it twice more during the day. If it works, I'm all for it.

Aunt O and Cousin C stayed for dinner, and Uncle C came over to join us after he got off work. I grilled some turkey burgers for dinner, and Bud ate a pretty well. He had some of his jelly beans for dessert, and spent some time drumming before settling in to watch a little TV and the potty training DVD one more time before bed.

He was good through the bedtime routine, and asleep before 9:00. I hope the air is a bit cleaner tomorrow and we can go play outside a little bit more.

Baby Pile

Buster was up this morning early at about 1:30, and I rocked him for a while before we decided that he really was hungry and handed him off to M-lady. He snacked and slept until about 5:30 after that.

Bud woke at about 6:30 briefly. I went in to check on him, and he asked me to lie down with him. Within a couple minutes, he was asleep again and I headed back to bed. Bud didn't wake up again until after 9:00. I think he's catching up on sleep.

Bud was in pretty good spirits when he got up. I got him dressed, and then he shadowed me as I got myself dressed and packed up to head into work. Bud was a little disappointed that I was leaving for the office, but agreed to hang out with M-lady pretty quickly.

They went to the library together this morning, but discovered it was closed. Bud had a good time dropping books in the book drop, though. After the library they ran some errands together, and Bud was well behaved through them.

They took an opportunity at the mall to go up and down the escalator there. Bud has been a little shy of escalators recently, and M-lady held his hand and talked him onto the one at the mall. Bud was apparently really proud of himself for riding an escalator again.

I got home shortly after 1:00, and our little afternoon party had started. Aunt O and Cousin C had come over, as well as friends J and T with new daughter NR. Also present were friends A and Jo, who just wanted to meet the babies.

We all had a nice time chatting, and the babies were generally all agreeable. Bud spent the afternoon playing with Nanny J. I don't think he took a nap, but he did get a good bath in at some point. It was nice trading baby stories with the other parents.

Everyone took off in the late afternoon except Aunt O and Cousin C, who stayed for dinner with us. Bud ate a really good amount of dinner, and he and I spent a good deal of the evening playing together. We did the usual bedtime routine, and even getting up late today he was in bed and asleep before 9:00pm. I don't really expect him to sleep in again tomorrow, but it would be nice.

Nanny J is off to a wedding for the remainder of this week and next, so we'll be doing the solo family thing for a little while. We're looking forward to taking some family outings together. I'll be certain to keep you all informed.

Surprisingly Good Morning

At about 5:30 this morning, Buster was up for his usual early morning meal, and Bud wandered into the room to ask me to change his diaper. It wasn't very wet, and he was really groggy, which makes me think Buster's crying woke him and he wanted a little bit of company.

I changed Bud's diaper and put him back to bed, where he passed out after a couple of minutes. I headed back to bed myself.

M-lady was heading to a meeting up in San Francisco today, and left around 7:00. I wasn't really looking forward to handling both kids on my own that early in the morning, when I'm usually pretty groggy. But I totally lucked out. Bud didn't wake me until 8:00, and Buster slept all the way until about 9:30, after Nanny J's arrival. So I never had both to look after.

Buster was willing to eat from the bottle, albeit grudgingly. Nanny J spent the morning getting him to eat, about an ounce at a time. He was pretty happy for sections of time, though, and I got to make faces at him a little bit now and then.

I spent most of the morning with Bud. We did our usual morning routine, had some toast, and then hung out in the office for a bit. Bud has grabbed one of my extra keyboards and set it up at his desk, and 'checks email' while I do the same, tapping away on the keyboard. I wonder how long it will be before he wants his own machine.

Bud requested carrot sticks and apple juice for lunch, and bailed after consuming a tiny amount. I went ahead and cooked a grilled-cheese sandwich for him, but he wasn't interested. M-lady arrived home shortly after lunch, and took over the feeding of Buster.

I tried to get Bud to nap for a bit in the afternoon, with no success. After we got up, Bud headed downstairs to find Nanny J to get a 'snack'. Apparently he had a pretty huge meal at that point, including a half of the sandwich I cooked for him and a preview of the dinner Nanny J was putting together.

Consequently, Bud didn't eat much dinner. We decided to get out of the house in the evening for a treat, and Bud decided on doughnuts rather than ice cream. So we loaded up and drove out to Krispy Kreme.

Of course, Bud was passed out in his carseat when we got there, and Buster was pretty content with the drive as well. So we picked up a half-dozen at the drive through, and headed for home. Bud was a little groggy when we got home, but woke enough to eat a doughnut pretty quickly.

We did the usual bedtime routine, although Bud wanted to head upstairs rather than watch his usual TV program. Consequently he was in bed around 8:00, although he didn't fall asleep until nearly 10:00, as he was up and down and listening at his door. M-lady finally got him to fall asleep. Don't know if he'll sleep in again tomorrow, but I hope so.

Bottle Rejection

Bud woke me up this morning at about 6:45, having wet through his diaper, pajamas, and bedsheets. I got him and the bed cleaned up, and we headed downstairs for milk and TV.

We had some toast together before Nanny J arrived at 9:00. Bud proceeded to follow me upstairs to the office, where he played by himself for the better part of an hour while I caught up on email and did various IT tasks.

Bud and I spent some time later in the morning doing some clean up in the garage. Bud entertained himself while I pushed some boxes around and swept up a bit. I used the blower function of the shopvac to do a powersweep, which Bud thought was pretty cool.

Bud and I had lunch together after that, and then he played with M-lady for a bit while I worked on the computers a little bit more. At about 2:00 I took him out to Target for a quick errand, and once again he fell asleep, briefly, in the car. He was really good in Target, though, even helping me to remember the things we needed to get.

Buster was OK today, but Nanny J couldn't get him to take his usual bottle in the afternoon. This bodes not well, as M-lady will be at an event up in San Francisco tomorrow morning, and Nanny J and I will be taking care of both kids until her return around mid-day. Buster's going to either eat from a bottle or be very hungry tomorrow.

M-lady and I did get Buster to eat about an ounce and half from the bottle in the evening, but he really seemed to protest vigorously.

Bud was good all evening. I took a quick bike ride in the late afternoon, and Bud watched some of Surf's Up with M-lady while I was gone. I grilled some hotdogs and brats for dinner, and he played outside with me while I was grilling. He ate a good dinner, and then did the standard bedtime routine with his usual cooperation.

Surf Movie

Bud didn't get out of bed this morning until a few minutes after 7:00, which was the time we talked about being OK for him to get up. I got him into a clean diaper, and we headed downstairs to watch some TV.

After getting some breakfast and checking in with M-lady and Buster, we headed up to the office and made video calls to Granddad B, and then Grandma W and the other Granddad B. Bud was in and out of the calls a little bit, although he enjoyed a story read to him by Grandma W and Granddad B. Everyone got to see a fairly content Buster, though, who is still changing a good amount each week.

M-lady took Bud down for lunch while I rocked Buster for a little while. After an hour or so, I headed down and handed Buster to M-lady for a bit while I had some lunch. Both kids seemed pretty mellow, and M-lady was watching Riverdance with Bud, so I took the opportunity to run out to Home Depot and pick up some yard tools.

I headed home, took charge of the kids, and M-lady took off to run some shopping errands. Bud and I sat down to watch the Netflix DVD which had just arrived, Surf's Up. I picked it since it didn't have any parts I was too worried about Bud getting upset about. He really liked the surfing, and asked when we could go.

His attention didn't quite last to the end of the movie, but he'd been watching a lot of TV up to that point. Buster was reasonably calm, so we all hung out in the living room together for a while, before M-lady arrived home at about 5:00.

I took Bud to go pick up a pizza for dinner a short time later, and Bud fell asleep in the car on the 10 minute drive. We've got to figure out a way to get him to take a nap, since he clearly still needs one. He was happy and well behaved for the rest of the day, though.

After dinner, I took Bud outside to run around a little bit while I trimmed the orange tree out front. Bud helped pick up dead oranges off the lawn in between dancing and singing engagements. We headed back inside at about 7:30 to start the bedtime routine.

M-lady took over getting Bud into PJs and getting his teeth brushed while I tried to soothe Buster for a little while, and then we swapped so I could read Bud a story and sit with him while he went to sleep. Buster apparently got a bit worked up, and M-lady ended up soothing him by feeding him a little bit. I think Buster didn't get enough nap time today, for whatever reason. Hopefully he'll sleep a little better tomorrow as the temperatures come down back to reasonable ranges.

Three on Two

Bud woke this morning around 6:45. I worked on getting him to stay in his bed a little while longer, with minimal success. He wasn't interested in going back to bed, unfortunately, so we headed downstairs to do the usual morning routine.

Bud and I had some waffles for breakfast, and the morning was a pretty standard affair. Around 11:00 we started packing up for an outing to the mall just to get out of the house.

The trip to the mall didn't go very well, but it didn't go so badly as to be surprising. Buster barfed in his carseat right before we pulled out of the garage, then got hungry as we arrived. We all sat in the family room of the mall for a few minutes while M-lady fed Buster, and I kept Bud entertained.

Buster promptly barfed on himself and me, so we spent some time cleaning up. Then we headed out to get some lunch. Bud was a little sulky during lunch, but ate reasonably well. Buster was hungry again due to multiple barfs, so I fed him a little bit from a bottle. We were all pretty tired at that point, though, so we headed home after lunch.

At home, I tried to get Bud to nap, to no avail. We had quiet time in his room for a little more than an hour, though. We got up and ended up watching some of The Wiggles before M-lady handed Buster to me and she and Bud went and watched some of High School Musical together.

Uncle C, Aunt O, and Cousin C arrived, and a brief time later Bud had a little bit of a meltdown when he accidentally whacked M-lady with one of his toys and refused to apologize. He wailed for a few minutes in his room before falling asleep.

Aunt O and Uncle C left Cousin C in our charge while they went out to see a movie. Cousin C was really well behaved and easy to take care of. I made faces at him for a while, fed him a bottle, changed his diaper, and then he slept in the swing for about 45 minutes. He woke just as they returned.

Bud woke a little bit cranky, but after sitting under the dinner table for a little while perked up and had some sushi with us. Bud ate well, and then was pretty happy and well behaved for the rest of the evening, which was nice.

We started the bedtime routine a little bit late, after playing some Wii Mario Kart and Boom Blox, but Bud was reasonably cooperative in heading for bed. I left him in his room around 9:00. M-lady managed to get Buster in bed around the same time.

Bud later snuck out of his room around 10:00, and I sat with him for a few more minutes. Hopefully he went to sleep quickly after that.

Race Night

Bud got me out of bed around 6:15 this morning, and wasn't interested in going back to sleep. I managed to contain him in his room, and then our room, until about 7:00, at which point we headed downstairs to watch some TV and do our usual morning routine.

Bud and I had some toast together, and Nanny J arrived as we were finishing up. We were alone because Buster slept in a bit on his second shot, so M-lady got a chance to sleep in a bit this morning. Bud and I played together until about 10:00, when he headed downstairs for some more breakfast with Nanny J.

I got a nap in at that point. M-lady played with Bud a bit, kicking and throwing a soccer ball around for a bit. They also played with dominoes, and M-lady managed to get a lot of hugs in as well.

Bud asked M-lady to play piano while he was eating lunch with Nanny J today, and she enjoyed the opportunity to play for him for a while. Bud kept asking for "more music" after she finished each song, so she got some good playing time in. Bud has cut her off more quickly in the past, but really seemed to enjoy her playing today.

Bud managed to hide a crayon in the pocket of one of his pairs of shorts that went into the wash today, and consequently colored a load of laundry. Nanny J managed to salvage most of the load, but many of Buds and Buster's items now have little purple spots on them. Only the shorts containing the crayon were totally ruined, fortunately. The others will generally qualify as 'play clothes' now, though.

Bud also spent a good portion of the afternoon diaperless. Every once in a while he would grab his crotch and proclaim, "Pee is coming!" and we'd hustle him off to the bathroom. He tended to pee a little bit in his pants before he'd figure out the pee was coming, so we went through a lot of shorts today.

I hung out with Bud for most of the afternoon, and we generally had a good time. We didn't have a specific nap time, but we did spend a while watching The Wiggles. We played ball, and wrestled in his room for a bit as well.

At about 6:00 Bud and I packed up and headed off to the Hellyer Park Velodrome to watch a big track cycling event. Bud fell asleep on the way there, so got a 30-40 minute nap or so. He was a little grouchy when I woke him up on arrival, but had a pretty good time at the race. He really enjoyed watching the motorcycle pace bike for the Keirin heats.

Around 8:30, Bud was getting a little tired and a little less comfortable around the noisy cheering. Since it was past his bedtime already, we packed up and headed for home. Bud was cheerful all the way back, and we got the bedtime routine started when we got home. Bud was in bed around 9:30, and asleep shortly after that.

While we were gone, M-lady took Buster out to run some errands. They had a good time, and Buster was well admired. Buster was asleep about the same time as Bud, and hopefully will have a restful night.

Thursday, June 19, 2008

Buster was a little less comfortable than usual last night, and I rocked him to sleep from about 2:15 to about 4:00. M-lady handled Buster for the rest of the morning when he woke around 6:30. Bud woke me shortly after 7:00, and we started the day.

Bud and I started getting ready at about 8:30 to head out to meet a couple of friends for berry picking at a nearby organic farm. Bud was pretty excited, and cooperated with getting dressed and putting on sunscreen.

Hard at work in the fields
We made it out to the farm at about 9:30, and waited 15 minutes or so to meet up with the Mommy Group mommies and their daughters we were meeting there. The fields were remarkably crowded, mostly with parents and young kids, but big enough that we weren't rubbing elbows constantly.

We all did pretty well picking blackberries. I tried to convince Bud to alternately eat one and put one in his basket, but I think he lost track and ate the berries in more like a 2-1 or 3-1 ratio. After getting a fair number of blackberries, we tried the raspberries for a while, but they seemed generally a little immature. They were also a bit more difficult to pick than the blackberries for the kids, so we worked our way back to the blackberries before heading home.

The kids seemed to have a great time, and everyone's hands were covered in dark berry juice. It got hot pretty quickly, though, as the day turned into a scorcher, and we were happy to get back indoors when we got home. Bud joined me in the shower to wash off the dust of the field, and then we had some lunch together.

Bud and I played together a little bit after lunch, although it was generally subdued. I took a nap from about 2:30 to 4:00 or so, and Bud had a good time playing with M-lady and Nanny J, and eating a good-sized snack at about 3:00. After I got up, Bud and I headed out to Fry's for a quick trip.

Bud fell asleep again on the way there, but was pretty well behaved once we arrived. We got to watch some folks playing the Guitar Hero display, but didn't get to play ourselves this time. Bud didn't seem too disappointed, though.

When we got home, I got a little bit of work done while Bud watched some of The Wiggles next to me. After a while we headed downstairs for dinner, where Bud ate pretty well.

Bud and I sat in front of the TV for a while as I held Buster and M-lady had some dinner. M-lady took Buster to a local book club meeting at about 7:30, and Bud and I had blackberries on vanilla ice cream for dessert before heading off to bed.

Bud was once again good for the bedtime routine, and fell asleep with me sitting next to him in about 15 minutes. We talked about how much fun we had today, and what we'd be doing tomorrow. Looking forward to it!

Enjoying Time Off Work

Bud actually woke a few times during the night. Since M-lady is on Buster duty, I took Bud's calls. First at 2:30am or so, he woke from what seemed to be a little bit of a nightmare. He said a few things that didn't make much sense about the bookcase, and moving items around. I moved a couple of things for him, and he seemed satisfied, and quickly went back to sleep.

He woke again at about 3:30, and this time asked me to accompany him while he 'pooped' on the toilet. There was no pooping, so this was likely a ruse to get me to sit with him for a bit. I lay down next to him in his bed and slept with him for about an hour before waking and heading back to my own bed at about 5:00.

He woke in the morning at his usual 7:30, and we did the standard morning routine. After watching a little bit of TV, we played some Wii Mario Kart until Nanny J arrived at 9:00. Bud was a little clingy after that, but eventually went to have some breakfast with M-lady and Nanny J as I got ready to head out to an eye doc appointment.

Bud was good for M-lady and Nanny J. I got back a little bit before noon, and played a little bit of 'baseball' with Bud before we had some lunch together. I made PB and J sandwiches, and Bud ate pretty well. Afterward we watched a little bit of the Wiggles, then chilled out in his room for a little bit.

Bud played with M-lady and Nanny J for a good portion of the afternoon, letting me nap and catch up after the eventful night. Aunt O also stopped by for a short visit, during which I was sadly unconscious. They apparently had a nice visit, however.

Bud and I watched a little bit more of the Blue Man Group DVD before heading outside for a while before dinner. I spent some time working on my bikes, and Bud helped me with tools. We also played around outside for a bit, and swept the garage a little. Bud was a little reluctant to come inside at about 6:30, but didn't protest too much.

Bud ate leftovers from his lunch and afternoon snack for dinner, and then occupied himself for a bit drumming while I ate dinner. We then settled in and spent the remainder of the evening finishing up the Blue Man Group Concert.

Bud was good all through the bedtime routine, and went to sleep quickly and quietly while I sat in the room with him. He hasn't been this cooperative at bedtime for a while, so it's nice.

Buster slept a little bit more than usual today, but otherwise seemed unaffected by the immunizations he received. Hopefully he'll sleep well through the night.

Buster's Two Month Checkup

Buster was up a couple times during the night, and M-lady took care of him. Have I said how much I appreciate her taking the night shift? Bud wandered into the room about 7:20, and I got up with him.

Bud and I did our usual morning routine, getting him dressed and heading downstairs to watch a little TV. His new morning show is Ni Hao, Kai-lan, sort of a Chinese version of Dora. It's not quite as grating a Dora yet, though.

Nanny J arrived at 9:00, and helped out a bit with Buster as I played with Bud some more. Eventually Bud got some breakfast with M-lady and Nanny J while I took a 20 minute nap before getting ready to take Buster to his doctor appointment.

Buster was a little cranky when we got to the doctor, since we'd woken him from a nap on the way there. He checked out OK though, if a bit on the heavy side, weighing in at 12 lbs, 5 oz, which put him around 65th percentile. The doctor also noted that he's pretty strong for his age, and cautioned us that he could very well roll himself over (by accident) any time now, so no leaving him near the edge of the table unattended and whatnot.

Buster got four shots today, two in each leg. He didn't like that very much. He was a bit cranky in the afternoon, and M-lady gave him a dose of Tylenol, which he promptly barfed up. But he was napping when I arrived home from some afternoon errands a little after 4:00.

I held Buster for a couple of hours while he napped. Bud played happily with Nanny J in the afternoon, got a bath (if not a nap), and then watched some Wiggles with me while I held Buster. When Buster started fidgeting and looking hungry, I handed him off to M-lady and started getting dinner ready.

We had some pasta for dinner, and Bud ate reasonably well. He and I watched a couple of songs from The Blue Man Group Complex Rock Tour, which he enjoyed quite a bit. I was afraid the Blue Men would be a little scary, but Bud didn't seem to think so.

The bedtime routine went really well. On the advice of the pediatrician, M-lady and I had a chat with Bud in the evening about potty training, letting him know that we were going to take a break from pushing him to go on the potty for a while. He can use his diaper if he likes, and we'll try again when he seems a little more ready and a little less interested in a struggle for control. He seemed accepting.

Bud fell asleep for me after I turned the lights out for the first time in a while, which was nice. I then spent about 30 minutes rocking Buster to sleep. Hopefully he'll have a reasonably comfortable night.

First Day Off Work

Buster slept pretty well again last night, and Bud woke me at about 7:30, par for the course. M-lady is still taking the night feedings, which is much appreciated. Today was my first weekday on leave from my day job, so I'll be home spending more time with the kids and family for the next twelve weeks or so. And after the intensity of my work the past few weeks, I'm looking forward to it.

I got Bud dressed, and we headed downstairs to watch a little bit of TV. Then we played together a bit, mostly puzzles, until Nanny J arrived at 9:00. I spent a little time racking Buster to sleep while Bud had some breakfast with her, and I managed to sneak back to bed for a little while after that.

At about 11:00, Bud wandered into the home office to see what I was up to. I set him watching an episode of The Wiggles, which he enjoyed, while I got a little more home IT work done. We headed down to lunch together shortly afterward.

Nanny J had prepared some stew for Bud, which he ate after going through an "I don't want to" whining period. He was pretty chipper after that, though, and ate well, including some cantaloupe which I carved up for him. After he ate, he entertained himself for a bit while I made a sandwich for myself.

After I'd eaten, Bud and I played a little bit of his 'baseball' game. We stood about 15' apart in the living room, and I'd roll a wiffle ball to him. He'd whack it with his designated whacker, currently a folded hand fan. Then he'd run over (say he was 'running the bases') and tickle-tackle me. We ended up playing this game quite a bit during the day.

After he was started to wear down, we watched the end of his Wiggles episode together, and then headed to his room to nap for a bit. There wasn't any nap happening, but he stayed quiet for a little while.

After deciding to get up, Bud played in the office with me while I called into a meeting (not quite entirely extracted from work yet!). He did a good job entertaining himself, drawing pictures at his desk and playing with various extraneous computer bits. M-lady arrived home from her outing at about 4:00, and Bud was pretty happy to see her.

Bud ate a big snack with Nanny J late in the afternoon, but refused a bath. Buster did get a bath, and smells good again. I ended up playing more 'baseball' with Bud after Nanny J took her leave.

I grilled some hot dogs for dinner, and Bud joined me outside playing with his water table again. He had a good time, and agreed to come in for dinner after a minimum of negotiating. Buster was alert and content to sit in his bouncer while the rest of the family ate, so we all had dinner together.

After dinner Bud and I played a little bit of Guitar Hero before starting the bedtime TV. Bud was looking pretty tired, but managed to stay reasonably affable through the bedtime routine. He ate some more of his dinner before heading upstairs, and got into this pajamas without fuss.

M-lady managed to get him to sleep again tonight. She seems to have the magic touch for getting him to relax and go to sleep in the evenings. I spent the same time rocking Buster to sleep. Both boys were asleep shortly after 9:00.

I'm looking forward to some family outings during the day over the next couple of weeks.

Happy Birthday to RuggerMom today!

Father's Day with Two

Buster slept an incredible seven and a half continuous hours last night, from about 9:00pm to 4:30am. He woke ravenous. M-lady fed him, and put him back to bed after a bit. Unfortunately, he ended up a bit antsy during the day, and never really slept for a significant period of time.

Bud woke at about 7:30, and I got up with him to get him settled. I had to leave around 8:00 for a bike race, and M-lady got up to hang out with Bud while I was gone.

They had a good morning together, and Bud was well behaved. They got some breakfast, sang songs, and took care of Buster. When I returned around noon, they were watching High School Musical together. It was really nice of M-lady to keep an eye on both kids while I went out for a ride.

Bud greeted me with a "Happy Father's Day!" when I got back, and a card and a grilling cookbook. We all had lunch, although Bud had a minor meltdown. Bud ate a good lunch of stew, though, and afterward we had a video call with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Bud and Buster were both on good behavior, and the grandparents were happy to see them. After chatting with them for a bit, we had a video call with RuggerMom, which was really nice. We got to see little J. Frog, who was actively trying to drool on the keyboard, and RuggerMom got to see Buster. Bud got a little impatient on the second call, but overall was OK.

After the call, we tried to get Bud to nap, but he wasn't interested. He was generally well behaved, but didn't want to sleep. He played in our room for a bit while M-lady and I snoozed, though.

At about 4:00, Bud came with me to the grocery store. Once again, he was really well behaved on the outing. This time he wanted to ride in the cart, and we had a good time together at the store. He was a little reluctant to go home, but when I told him the popsicles would turn into puddles if we didn't get them into the freezer, he relented, and helped bring the groceries in.

Bud played in the backyard with his water table while I grilled burgers for dinner, and had a good time. He got himself pretty wet, so I changed his clothes when he came in before we ate dinner. He ate reasonably well.

After dinner, we had a video call with Granddad B and Grandma W, and Bud was a little preoccupied. He said "Hi", and flew in and out of the picture a few times, but was generally more interested in playing drums. The grandparents got to see a fairly alert Buster, though.

We started the bedtime routine after that, and it went reasonably well. M-lady managed to get Bud to fall asleep before 9:00. Buster was a little tougher to get to sleep, as he was all day. He seemed uncomfortable, and eventually nursed to sleep around 9:30. Hopefully he'll sleep reasonably well tonight.

Park Day

Buster was up a couple times during the night, and I helped out when he barfed around 5:00, rocking him back to sleep. Bud woke around 7:30; so much for sleeping in. I did the usual morning routine with Bud.

We had Eggos for breakfast around 8:30, and then M-lady and I swapped. I took care of Buster for a while and M-lady looked after Bud. They made blueberry muffins together while I rocked Buster.

After the muffins were done, I got started on packing a picnic lunch for the family while M-lady got herself and Buster ready to go. We headed over to one of the local parks, and ate lunch together. Bud had a good time kicking a ball around and playing on the play structures, and was reluctant to leave when Buster started melting down. I promised him a popsicle at home, and he agreed to get into the car.

Bud ate his popsicle when we got home, and he and I lay down for a nap. He didn't actually nap, but did have some quiet time. At about 3:30 I took him to Fry's with me after letting him out of his room, and he immediately fell asleep in the car.

He was really, really good in Fry's, which was nice. He walked by himself, was willing to leave the Guitar Hero display, and held my hand for most of the trip. It was nice having him on his best behavior.

When we got home, M-lady headed out for some errands while Bud and I watched a little TV and looked after Buster. Buster eventually fell asleep in the bouncer, and Bud and I were able to play together a little bit before M-lady arrived home just as Buster was waking up hungry.

M-lady had brought dinner home with her, so she and Bud ate while I fed Buster. When they finished up, I ate while M-lady finished feeding Buster. Buster slept for a bit after that, but was a bit crabby later in the evening. He had a huge barf at about 8:30, and finally fell asleep a bit after 9:00.

I managed to get Bud into the shower after a bit of a tussle, and the shower went pretty well. It didn't go as well when I tried to end the shower, though, and it was a chore getting him out and dried off. After that he was pretty good about going through the bedtime routine, though.

He was in bed with the lights out shortly after 8:00, but didn't fall asleep until about 8:45, when M-lady sat with him for a while.

Not Sleeping

M-lady didn't get much sleep during the night, as Buster was up and down a bit. I rocked Buster back to sleep at about 7:20, heard Bud get up, and got him into a clean diaper. M-lady took Bud from there, as I had to head in to last day of the conference.

M-lady was nursing Buster when Nanny J arrived, and Bud refused to answer the door. We have an intercom, though, and M-lady was able to ask Nanny J to wait for a moment. Bud said hello into the intercom, and Nanny J told him she had something special for him to eat. Bud went and opened the door immediately.

Bud was okay today up until about 3:00. One of our dancer friends, C, came to visit for a while in the early afternoon, and Bud played with her quite a bit, very happily. He didn't actually show off his Jabbawockeez moves, but he did show her all the pieces of his costume.

After about 3:00, though, Bud fell apart. He screamed for a while until he fell asleep on the couch, woke screaming, and continued for quite some time. I eventually soothed him enough that he was able to chill out watching some Caillou and The Wiggles. At about 6:00 we had some dinner together, a wonderful stew that Nanny J made during the day. Bud was pretty happy for most of the remainder of the evening.

After dinner there was a little bit of TV and then the bedtime routine, which we started about a half an hour early since Bud hasn't been sleeping lots. We had lights out around 8:00.

But Bud refused to stay in his bed. He asked to sit on the potty, then a short time later pooped in his diaper, and then got up and wandered around several times. He even came down to the garage where I was working. M-lady sat with him, and I finally put him in bed and sat with him for about 10 minutes. He fell asleep shortly after that, probably around 9:50. With any luck he'll sleep in a bit tomorrow.

Try It

I didn't have to leave for the conference quite so early this morning, so got up when Bud wandered into the bedroom at about 7:30. We did the usual morning routine while M-lady took care of Buster, and watched a little TV until about 8:30.

At that point I had to start getting ready to go, and Bud accompanied me to the bathroom and watched as I shaved. He really wanted to help, but I couldn't really come up with anything for him to do that seemed like it wouldn't end in disaster.

Bud was hanging out with M-lady and playing with Nanny J when I left a little after 9:00. He apparently had a pretty good day, with a solid lunch, but of course no nap.

Bud did watch M-lady start a DVD ballet workout, and after a couple sections, stood up to join her. But rather than doing the movements with her, he offered her critiques.

I got home a little before 5:00, and played with Bud until M-lady relieved me at about 5:30. I managed to nap for about 20 minutes. At that point Bud come in and, while he had promised M-lady that he would be quiet, had not promised that he wouldn't poke me.

Bud and I took a quick trip to REI for some bike parts, and then worked in the garage for a bit. Bud found his old water table stacked in the garage, and given the heat of the past few days, I gladly set it up for him out back. He played there while I fiddled with the bikes for a bit.

After Bud was moderately soaked, we cleaned up and came in. Bud was a little reluctant, but joined me for dinner shortly. I gave him a generous helping of cauliflower, which he really likes, and he happily munched away. I hadn't served myself any, and Bud insisted that I try some of his to see if I liked it.

After dinner we did the usual bedtime routine, although a little late. Bud wasn't too stubborn getting ready for bed, and we had the lights out around 9:00. He fell asleep shortly afterward.

Buster is still eating what seems to be about double his usual intake. Hope the feeding frenzy/growth spurt doesn't last too much longer.

Egg in a Box

Once again I had to leave this morning for the conference before Bud was up. M-lady was already taking care of Buster, though, and managed to get him to sleep a little bit longer as I headed out. Unfortunately, I left my conference badge at home, and had to come back to get it.

I was in and out right around 9:15, and found Bud up and playing with his trains, wearing his Jabbawockeez outfit. I suppose it wasn't too warm yet.

Buster was very hungry today. He ate tons, and kept eating even when we thought he was stuffed in the evening. Must be doing a growth spurt. He also got a bath today, and his cradle cap is much improved.

Bud was a bit more challenging today, testing boundaries constantly. He didn't take a bath, although apparently ate a huge lunch. He was happy to see me when I arrived home a little after 6:00, and requested that we play some Boom Blox together.

When I headed for dinner, Bud had a little bit of a meltdown. We ended up sitting in his room for a bit. I asked him if he wanted green eggs and ham for dinner, and he said no. I asked if he'd like them here or there, and he again said no. I skipped some of the book and asked if he'd like them in a box with a fox, and he gave me an emphatic yes.

We didn't have a fox available, nor much ham or green eggs. So Bud ate an egg I prepared for him while standing in a box. He seemed to enjoy it thoroughly.

After dinner, we played a little more Boom Blox before watching some Oswald to start the bedtime routine. He was a little reluctant during the routine, but using a timer helped a lot. He was in bed with the lights out around 8:20, and got up a couple of times: once to ask to sit on the potty, and again to ask for a diaper change. I eventually told him to lie down and sing a song to himself, and didn't hear from him again.

Little Cousins

I actually left for the conference this morning before Bud woke up. M-lady reported that they had a great day, and Bud was well behaved for most of the day. He was apparently fantastic at his new gymnastics class, so we'll keep that up. And while I don't think he took a nap, he did happily take his bath in the afternoon with Nanny J.

I got home shortly after Nanny J left, and Bud was dressed up in his 'Jabbawockeez' outfit: windbreaker, hat, and gloves. It seemed a little warm for the day, but he refused to take the extra clothes off until dinnertime, even though he was visibly sweating.

He played by himself for a while, then joined M-lady, Aunt O, and me for dinner. He ate well, and then played with me for a bit in the living room before we repaired to the family room for TV and kicking off the bedtime routine.

While Bud was watching TV, Aunt O packed up to head for home, since Uncle C was flying back in tonight. While she was occupied with that, we set up content Cousin C and Buster on the couch together to try and snap some photos. They were pretty tolerant, when they weren't pitching over.

Bud was upset when he discovered that I was putting Buster to sleep, while M-lady was going to help him out with his bedtime routine. He kicked up a bit of a fuss, and M-lady managed to talk him down. He did get himself undressed during his tantrum, though.

I read him a story before bed, and then he stalled repeatedly, finally going to sleep sometime after 9:00.

Monday, June 09, 2008

Bud woke around 7:00 this morning. M-lady was already up with Buster, so I got up and did the usual morning thing with Bud. I had to head out a little before 8:00 to get to my conference up in the city, though. Bud didn't want to continue to watch TV without me, so ended up working on puzzles with Aunt O as I left.

Bud really doesn't like to watch TV alone. This is sort of good and bad... good, in that as a parent I always know what he's watching. Bad, in that when I want to leave him in front of Sesame Street for a bit and, say, clean up the kitchen, it doesn't really happen. I'm sure he'll get more comfortable watching TV on his own before too long.

Nanny J arrived at 9:00, and Friend J and his mom came over for a play date about an hour later. M-lady reported that the kids had a great time, but after a couple of hours both the kids and the parents were totally worn out.

Bud did not, in fact, nap today, although he had some quiet time with M-lady. I got home around 4:30, and found him doing (different) puzzles with Aunt O. After getting settled a little, I helped M-lady with Buster for a bit before dinner.

Buster is starting to make baby noises more regularly. We get lots of grunts and sighs, as well as the occasional 'gah'. It's very cute. Buster is also starting to smile a little more often, although more for M-lady than for me.

We had dinner in a rather staggered fashion, and I ate with Bud. He ate pretty well, and after dinner we played a little bit of Guitar Hero before watching some TV to start the bedtime routine.

M-lady took over some of the shepherding for the bedtime routine, and I spent the time putting Buster to sleep. Buster is regularly sleeping about 5 hours now, usually from about 9:00pm to about 2:00am or so. M-lady is still handling the night feedings, so I've been sleeping reasonably well.

Bud asked to sit on the potty once after lights out tonight, so I put a timer on him when he sat down. With any luck we'll discourage sitting on the potty as a means of staying up later.

The Price of Potty Training...

is eternal vigilance. Or something like that.

Bud woke this morning briefly at about 5:30, complaining of a wet diaper. I got him changed, sat him on the toilet for a little while ineffectually, and put him back to bed. He woke again around 8:00, and I got up with him to do our usual morning routine.

After a couple of kid switches, and getting Buster to go to sleep, we all packed up and headed off to the mall for lunch. Bud happily ate a corn dog, fries, and a cherry lemonade for lunch. He had a bit of a meltdown as we walked through the mall shortly afterward, but we sorted it out. Bud went into the shoe store with M-lady and picked out a new pair of shoes and a pair of sandals for summer. Size 10s!

We headed home after that, and got home shortly before Aunt O and Cousin C arrived. They're moving in for a few days, as Uncle C has to go out of town for a conference for a few days. Aunt O and M-lady can support each other over the next few days, as I may get home late from the conference in San Francisco I'll be attending this week.

We spent the early afternoon getting Aunt O and Cousin C settled. As the afternoon progressed, and things looked pretty stable, I took the opportunity to dash out for a bike ride. I got back just as they were starting in on dinner.

Bud ate well, and played on his own for a bit before we were able to join him again. He's able to play by himself for longer and longer periods now. After I ate, we had nice video chat with Grandma W and Granddad B. Bud was a little rambunctious on the call, but I think he enjoyed seeing them.

We watched a little bit of TV, and started the bedtime routine shortly afterward. Bud was pretty good through the routine, and we read The Emperor and the Kite again. Shortly after we turned out the light, Bud let me know that he needed to poop, so we went and sat together on the toilet for a while.

No poop. So into bed, only to come out about 15 minutes later saying he really needed to poop this time. Again, nothing. At this point it was a bit past 9:00, and he fell asleep pretty quickly. He didn't poop at all today, though, so with any luck he won't poop during the night. Maybe we can even put him on the toilet for the poop. He certainly seemed willing tonight.

Rare Pre-Lunch Nap

Bud woke this morning around 6:45, and I got up with him to do our usual morning routine. We ended up watching a fair bit of morning TV together. After we turned the TV off, Bud got a little upset that I wouldn't let him have a cookie for breakfast. Overall, Bud's pretty reasonable. I tried to explain why we don't eat cookies for breakfast, but he didn't buy it.

So I handed Bud off to M-lady, and snoozed next to Buster in our bed for a while. They had some breakfast (non-cookie) together while Buster and I lounged. Buster woke up hungry about an hour later, and I ferried him to M-lady for a meal.

Bud and I took off around 11:30 to go hit a bike shop. He was pretty good at the shop, and afterward I asked if he wanted to go to the toy store. I was thinking of picking up a small thing for him, and finding some larger item we could use as motivation for potty training (i.e., use the potty 10 times and you can have that... whatever). But Bud refused to go to the toy store, and got upset for unknown reasons. I tried to get him to tell me what was bugging him, but I'm not sure he could verbalize it himself. I thought he might be afraid of getting disappointed at the toystore.

In any case, we headed straight for home. Bud actually fell asleep on the way home, and stayed asleep when I turned off the car. So I rolled down the windows and let him sleep in the car on the driveway while I puttered around the garage, keeping an eye on him. He woke up after a bit, fairly cheery, and we headed inside to have some lunch.

Bud ate a huge lunch of a PB and J sandwich, some chips, orange juice, and a cookie. After lunch we played together for a bit before we all packed up and headed off to attend Friend V's baby shower.

Bud was really shy at the baby shower, and Buster pretty much slept through the whole thing. Both were widely admired. Bud hid in my arms for a bit, and eventually had some fun drawing pictures. He really liked the punch and cupcakes, too. After chatting with dance friends for a bit, we came home.

Buster got upset/hungry on the way home, and Bud once again showed that he doesn't get rattled by Buster's screaming. He did some shushing, and said "Poor Buster" a few times, but wasn't upset in any way. When we got home, I changed Buster's very poopy diaper and fed him a bottle while M-lady and Bud got settled.

Bud and I ran out to pick up a pizza for dinner a short time later, and we all had pizza for dinner. Buster looked on contentedly. After dinner, we had a nice video call with Granddad B and Grandma Nese. Buster got a little discontented during the call and had another meal with M-lady, and Bud spent a good amount of time clowning around. But we all had a good time and a good chat.

After the call, Bud and I started the bedtime routine. He was reasonably cooperative, and we enjoyed reading The Emperor and the Kite for the third or fourth consecutive evening. He pooped in his diaper shortly after turning out the lights, and M-lady changed that and sat with him for a bit, singing songs, before he went to sleep.

Jungle Time

Bud woke this morning at about 8:00, and he and I did our usual morning routine. We were having Eggos together when Nanny J arrived at 9:00. Bud didn't mind that I headed upstairs to get ready for work after we finished our waffles, and played with Nanny J for a while.

M-lady took Bud to the Jungle a little later in the morning apparently with great success. They met some of Bud's friends there, and everyone had a good time. We'd taken Bud a while ago, but he was a little intimidated. This time he had lots of fun confidently storming through the play structure. He still tended to drift away from large groups of kids, but otherwise was just fine.

He came home and had a big lunch, no nap, and a bath in the later afternoon. I got home a little before 5:00, and Bud and I watched a little bit of an episode of The Wiggles on Netflix. I can't say I'm wild about the show, but Bud seemed interested.

After watching a bit we spent some time wrestling in his room before heading downstairs for dinner. Bud ate well, and we played some Boom Blox together after dinner. That led to the bedtime routine, which went pretty well with M-lady's assistance. Bud went to sleep on his own pretty quickly.

First Daddy Smile

Buster was apparently up and down a little bit during the night, and M-lady handled him. Bud woke a little before 8:00, and I got up with him to do the usual morning routine. I picked up some stuff downstairs while he watched TV for a while before the cleaners arrived at 9:00, followed shortly by Nanny J.

After I extricated myself from Bud and got started on work, Bud and Nanny J headed out to the backyard to plant some pumpkin seeds and a little pot provided as a gift from his teachers at the last day of school yesterday. Shortly after they came back in, they took off again, this time for the park.

They were home for lunch, and Bud ate a reasonable amount. Bud played a little bit more before heading to his room for some quiet time with M-lady. He didn't nap, and he kept trying to sneak out of his room a little early. So no nap today.

After getting up and about, he had a serving of the great shrimp and broccoli dish Nanny J made for us while he was in his room. Bud managed to get a bath before too long after than, and then came and sat on my lap for a while, watching a netflix movie on my PC as I worked.

We all headed downstairs for dinner around 6:00, and Bud had a little bit of a meltdown. I sent him to his room, and he bawled for a few minutes before figuring out the appropriate attitude adjustment and joining us for a pleasant meal. After dinner, I played a little bit of Rock Band with him before getting started on the bedtime routine.

Bud was fantastic throughout the bedtime routine, which was nice after a couple of nights of struggling. Hopefully he'll keep it up for a while. We enjoyed reading a story together, and he went to sleep on his own pretty quickly.

During the day M-lady handed me a very alert Buster. I got a real smile from him today for the first time, although it was short-lived and not repeated. I'm looking forward to more of them, though. His level of awareness seems to be increasing steadily. He didn't sleep a lot during the day today, so hopefully will sleep better tonight.

Last Day of School

Buster slept really well last night, waking once during a nine-hour period.Bud woke at about 7:00, and I got up with him for the morning. We changed into clean clothes, watched some TV, and then played for a bit before Nanny J arrived at 9:00.

After playing with me for a bit, and then deciding it wasn't as much fun to watch me work in front of the computer, Bud headed out to play with M-lady and Nanny J. He had lunch and was really excited to go to school today. Of course, today is his last day of school for the year.

He had a good day at school, and M-lady went to join him for the last bit and bring him home. He apparently sang along with some of the songs at circle time, and did some of the hand gestures, which was the first time we've seen him do that. He's not really been a circle time kind of kid so far.

He was cheery for much of the afternoon, but had a little bit of a meltdown when M-lady had to take care of Buster. But after sulking for a little bit he cheered up and spent much of the late afternoon playing with Nanny J. He had some watermelon for a snack, and a bath before Nanny J left.

We all went out to Red Robin for dinner, and Bud was pretty well behaved. He ate most of the corn off of a corn dog, and some of the dog, too. We got him melon slices instead of french fries, and he devoured the cantaloupe. He was pretty well behaved all through dinner. Buster slept through the whole event.

Bud and I played together for just a little while before doing the bedtime routine. Bud was a bit rambunctious during the routine, but we got through it without much fussing. He didn't want a story tonight though, and went to sleep on his own pretty quickly.

Missed Day

Sorry I didn't post last night. Yesterday I left for work early, before Bud was up, and I ended up working all night at the office and got home today in the mid-afternoon. I passed out pretty quickly after getting home, but did get up this evening to help get Bud into bed and rock Buster to sleep. Since I've been a bit removed, the points in the summary are courtesy of the fantastic M-lady, who's been doing a fantastic job of taking care of the family while I've been working.

On Monday, Ama and Agu took off in the early morning. M-lady handled both kids until Nanny J arrived at about 9:00. Buster slept well during the day, and Bud had a good time at school in the afternoon.

Bud and M-lady did some practice with scissors in the afternoon, and Bud had fun. I managed to get home for a couple of hours in the early evening, and Bud proudly told me about his work with the scissors, and showed me some art projects he'd done at school.

We had a quick dinner of leftovers, and Bud ate pretty well. I got to do the bedtime routine with him, but he was pretty tired at the end of the day, and a bit willful during the routine. He was in bed a bit after 8:00, though, and fell asleep quickly.

Today, Buster woke at about 3:00, and then both kids got up around 6:00. They were cooperative, and took turns having their diapers changed and having some breakfast. They gave me a call at the office during breakfast, and then watched a little bit of TV until Nanny J arrived.

A neighbor, S, visited with her four-month-old daughter. Bud was not shy and pretty excited, friendly and fun. They had a good time together. After lunch, Bud eventually wore himself out, and ended up falling asleep on the couch in the family room.

After I arrived home, M-lady took care of the kids while I snoozed. M-lady and Bud watched some Stomp videos, although there's some trepidation about the example of banging household objects. Bud then sat patiently while M-lady fed Buster, having a nice chat, and then Buster waited patiently in the swing while M-lady got dinner ready for herself and Bud.

Bud woke me at about 7:40, and we watched a little bit of TV with warm milk to start the bedtime routine. M-lady got Bud through most of the routine while I held Buster groggily. I read Bud a story and tucked him in.

M-lady then handed me Buster and headed for the grocery store. I rocked Buster to sleep, and now look forward to getting a few hours myself.

Last Day of Help

Buster slept really well last night, with two five-hour sleeping stretches, with a two-hour wakeful period between them. With any luck we'll repeat that tonight.

Bud played with Ama and Agu again this morning. Sadly, Ama and Agu are heading home tomorrow, and M-lady and I will be on our own with the kids. We can certainly handle it, but it's been nice so far with all the grandparents helping out.

Aunt O, Uncle C, and Cousin C visited late morning and we all had some brunch. I was busy working (things are busy), so only got to drop into the kitchen long enough to have a waffle. But everyone seemed to be having a pretty good time.

At about 1:30 I got free, and headed downstairs to see how things were going. I managed to convince Bud to come with Agu and me on an outing to Fry's. We had a good time wandering around, although Bud has been complaining that his 'legs are tired', so he needs me to carry him the last few times we've been out together.

We had fun playing with the Guitar Hero display, and eventually escaped without spending too much money. Bud was a little reluctant to go inside once we got home, but settled down before too long. He watched an episode of Caillou over my shoulder while I worked for a bit, while M-lady and Ama went out to run some errands.

Bud didn't nap today, which wasn't too surprising. Consequently, he was a little grumpy around bedtime. I tried to do the routine with him, but he refused to use the potty this evening. He wasn't too bad with everything else, though, aside from getting into bed. I sat with him in his room for a bit, and then M-lady did the same. He fell asleep on his own before too long.

We'll miss the grandparents around here! Their help has been invaluable, and it's nice to have them around.
